Archeologists recently announced the discovery of previously unseen mosaics on the floor of an ancient synagogue in Huqoq, Israel. The discovery is important, not only because the mosaics themselves are so striking, but also because they contain the earliest known images of biblical heroines Deborah and Jael in ancient Jewish art. These women appear in the biblical book of Judges, where they play pivotal roles in the military success of Israel. Recent biblical scholarship suggests that these women have been wildly misunderstood. The excavations into the late fourth-early fifth century synagogue, which are in their tenth season, have been progressively uncovering the remarkable mosaic that adorned the floor of the structure. This season’s excavations focused on the southwest portion of the building. The archeologists, led by Jodi Magness the Kenan Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, have previously discovered mosaics showing Samson, Alexander the Great, Jonah and the large fish, the parting of the Red Sea, the construction of the Tower of Babel, Noah’s Ark, and a Zodiac cycle. The newly discovered floor mosaic shows an episode from...

ROME (AP) — Hellas Verona extended its unbeaten streak to five matches with a 2-1 win over visiting Empoli in Serie A on Monday. Adrien Tameze scored the winner for Verona in added time following an exchange with Antonin Barak. Barak had put Verona ahead shortly after the break with a header then Simone Romagnoli equalized for Empoli with a deflection. Verona moved up to ninth while Empoli dropped to 12th, replaced by Torino, a 2-1 winner over lowly Udinese, which squandered 18 shots at goal. ___ More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/Soccer and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2021 The Associated Press. Jeffrey Epstein believed he could make a deal to beat his sex trafficking charges by turning against Donald Trump or Bill Clinton, a new book claims. The billionaire pedophile thought the Justice Department - under President Trump - ordered his arrest because they wanted him to 'flip and reveal the secrets of Bill Clinton', who had flown on Epstein's plane multiple times. He also believed federal prosecutors in New York who were investigating Trump could have been after dirt on the former president.  The late financier believed that 'even in this climate' there was a 'deal to be made,' journalist Michael Wolff writes in Too Famous: The Rich, the Powerful, the Wishful, the Damned, the Notorious - Twenty Years of Columns, Essays and Reporting. The book - available on October 19 - recounts in vivid and macabre detail Epstein's final months before his arrest in July 2019 and his subsequent suicide before he could face trial.  Jeffrey Epstein believed federal prosecutors ordered his arrest in 2019 because they were trying to get him to spill Bill Clinton's 'sex secrets,' a new book...
On a morning in early 2019, with spring in the air, traffic was stalled on both Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue by half a dozen police cars idling near the Frick Museum and, across the street, the mansion home of Jeffrey Epstein. “Did you figure out what happened, was there a bomb? Did you get caught?” Reid Weingarten, one of Epstein’s lawyers, asked Ehud Barak, the former Israeli general and prime minister as he arrived at the house. Standing in the triple-high foyer of Epstein’s massive home, Barak handed his coat to one of the familiar, cheerful young women in the house—ever a surprise that, considering the ongoing legal and public fury against the convicted sex offender, Epstein continued his way of life undaunted. “I just assumed they were taking Jeffrey away,” said Barak, in his heavy accent, making the obvious joke, his eyebrows rising above his glasses. “But he is still here, so? We have nothing to worry about. The secrets are safe.” “Would you like an omelet?” a houseman asked the former prime minister. “Ehud! E-HUD!” called out...
Amy Winehouse's father is speaking out in opposition of a recently announced biopic about the late singer. Mitch Winehouse, who serves as the administrator of his daughter's estate, gave an interview about Halycon Studios' plan to release a project about his daughter's life. Essentially, Mitch claims the production company's project announced Tuesday is "100 percent not allowed." Speaking to TMZ, the patriarch claimed Halcyon would need to receive permission from the estate to use Winehouse's image and her music. Reports on Tuesday said Halcyon Studios was set to produce the biopic about the late "Back to Black" singer's life based on Daphne Barak's book "Saving Amy," which came out in 2010. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barak completed the book with Winehouse and her family during the last years of her life and it includes 40 hours of footage, photos and notes. A wild sheep wandering in the middle of an Australian forest has shed its heavy, dense 35-kilogram fort, and for the first time in five years, it struggles under a filthy pile covered with mud and intricate debris. Barack was found in a forest in the state of Victoria, from where he was taken to an animal shelter north of Melbourne, the association that cared for him said on Facebook in early February. “I could not believe there was a sheep under that blanket,” Pam Ahorn, founder of Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, told Nine News Television. According to her, Barack “is a young lamb, never to go astray”, which is why his coat will never shine for almost five years. For their well-being, sheep must be slaughtered at least once a year, otherwise they are difficult to survive, especially in Australia where the summer is particularly dry and arid. However, Barack did not achieve the world record set by his now-deceased comrade Chris. The latter made headlines in 2015 when he cut his loot, which weighed 41kg. However,...

New York : Cristiano scored a goal, but disappeared for most of the match. Photo: FILIPPO VENEZIA / EFE The Juventus could not defeat this Saturday Hellas verona and put their participation in Champions League next year, in addition to moving 7 points away from the general leader, the Inter de Milan. The forcefulness of Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his team’s goal in the 1-1 draw at the Marcantonio Bentegodi stadium, it was not enough for La Vecchia Signora to get the three visiting points and had to settle for dividing the units. The current monarch of Serie A, who could not count on his forward Álvaro Morata, because he contracted a strange virus, suffered from forcefulness and could only penetrate the rival goal until the second half, at minute 49, when Cristiano Ronaldo beat the goalkeeper Marco Silvestri with a shot after being assisted by Federico Chiesa. The Juventus took a step back in his fight for the ‘scudetto’. Those of Andrea Pirlo were unable to get past the draw (1-1) this Saturday at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi against a Verona that neutralized Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal through Barak. With this insufficient point, the Turinese are three behind Milan, second classified that this Sunday visits Roma, and seven of the leader, Inter, which receives Genoa. The beginning of the meeting was exciting. The overwhelming dominance of Juve at the start it was suffocating. Those of Andrea Pirlo, with a 3-5-2 start and many important casualties in their ranks (Chiellini, Bonucci, Cuadrado, Dybala, Morata, Arthur and Danilo), surrounded the portal defended by Marco Silvestri and so much Aaron Ramsey, with a kick to the side of the net, like Cristiano Ronaldo they looked for the goal without success. Anyway, the first big occasion of the match was Verona by Ivan Juric, who bet from the beginning for a 3-4-2-1. A header from midfielder Davide Faraoni hit the post after deflecting ‘in extremis’ goalkeeper Szczesny. Juve returned to...

After months of haggling, it appears Jared Kushner has helped secure a “last-minute achievement” for the Trump administration in the form of a brokered agreement between Qatar and a Saudi-led bloc of regional partners, including Bahrain, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. The deal, which will be signed tomorrow, involves Saudi Arabia reopening its land border with Qatar, while Bahrain and the UAE will unlock their airspace and waters for Qatari transit. In turn, Qatar is expected to “pursue more open-minded engagement” with its neighbors. But analysts and those involved aren’t sure whether things will really cool down. A senior diplomat for one of the Gulf nations reportedly described the pact as a “step in the right direction,” but suggested the “root causes” of the longstanding rift between the sides are “still there.” 14 “Some of the issues were solved but the root causes for the rift – bad personal relationships between the leaders and big policy differences on Iran, Turkey and the Muslim Brotherhood are still there”, the diplomat told me on the Saudi-Qatar deal — Barak Ravid (@BarakRavid)...

TEL AVIV – A small group of protesters is demonstrating against former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, claiming that his political group took money from a company associated with the late American pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The anti-Barak demonstrators are demanding an investigation into his role in the almost daily protests that are being staged outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence on Jerusalem’s Balfour Street. They claim that Epstein’s “dirty money” is now fueling an attempt to overthrow a democratically-elected government. An NGO called “National Responsibility” was founded in 2017 by Barak associates, including a family member as well as a former political advisor.  According to the left-wing Israeli daily Ha’aretz, it was a public-benefit corporation that was intended to serve as an organizational platform in the event that Barak should return to politics — which he did with the establishment of the failed Israel Democratic Party in June 2019. Shortly thereafter, Barak called for “a million people to take to the streets” to stop Netanyahu from “destroying Israel’s democracy.” As Ha’aretz reported, National Responsibility received a donation of NIS 144,000 ($40,647) in March 2017...

And not the happy Fourth of July kind. Since no one was closer to the billionaire pedophile than Maxwell, whose network spanned from New York to France, Israel, Buckingham Palace and the Caribbean, those in the know are undoubtedly fretting over the dirt she could dish to keep herself out of jail. Particularly after prosecutors vowed to “bring justice” to other potential enablers of Epstein’s sex abuse and trafficking. And her friend, TV host Christopher Mason, said he believes she had access to videotapes from all of Epstein’s properties — and the footage has gone missing. “I’m sure she has access to the videos,” Mason said. “A lot of powerful people will be more than a little worried.” So who among Epstein’s infamous black book will need a good lawyer if...
