The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) is observing National Work Zone Awareness Week April 11 – 15. This year’s theme is “Work Zones are a Sign to Slow Down”. Each spring Georgia DOT and other departments of transportation across the country observe National Work Zone Awareness Week to educate motorists about the dangers of work zones and to remind drivers to plan, minimize distractions and slow down when driving through work zones. This annual observance sheds light on the real dangers faced by Georgia DOT workers and contractors as well as drivers, passengers and pedestrians traveling through work zones in Georgia. In fact, a large majority of work zone fatalities are not workers but are others passing through work zones, in crashes that are largely preventable. Georgia DOT manages the 10th largest transportation network in the nation with the safety and mobility of its citizens top of mind. An unfortunate consequence of this civic responsibility is that the construction and maintenance workers charged with maintaining Georgia’s state and federal...

LYNN (CBS) — A multi-family home on Broadway Street in Lynn was destroyed by a fire Saturday. Flames could be seen bursting from the home around noon. All of the residents inside the home, which included seven adults and four children, made it out safely. One Lynn firefighter was treated for “exhaustion-type symptoms.” The fire department said the flames also created a multi-acre brush fire behind the building. Lynn Fire Chief Stephen L. Archer told WBZ-TV that low water pressure from the hydrants in the area affected the efforts to put out the fire. “We had initiated a good exterior attack on the fire that seems to have started on the rear porches, before the water supply issues began to cause us major problems,” he said. “Additionally we had some close exposure houses on both sides that we had to protect.” Firefighters in Lynn worked to put out heavy flames Saturday afternoon (Photo Via Lynn Fire Department Facebook) It is still unclear what started the fire.

Q: We need to sell our home in Silicon Valley and buy in a less expensive Bay Area county. We are older adults now urgently rethinking the home-selling process. We tried to buy a replacement home before the state’s mask-wearing mandate expired. We plan to purchase a home contingent upon the sale of our current residence. While shopping for a replacement home in other counties, most open-house visitors are not wearing face coverings. The new-home salesperson was not wearing a face covering at one housing tract. This disregard for us older adults as customers was alarming.   Thankfully, our county still requires indoor face coverings. Last month, over 100 visitors attended the open house down our street. We also know middle-age people who were fully vaccinated, boosted and came down with COVID-19. What safe steps can older adults take while buying and selling simultaneously?  A: You are correct that in Santa Clara County, aka Silicon Valley or...

SAN JOSE — A device or package containing a “small amount of explosives” was found during a search of the home of VTA mass shooter Samuel Cassidy and was expected to be detonated safely on the grounds early Friday afternoon, according to San Jose police. Police made the announcement just before 11:30 a.m. Friday, on the third day that police, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, ATF and San Jose Fire Department have staged around Cassidy’s home on Angmar Court off McLaughlin Avenue. The sheriff’s office has been serving search warrants for the past two days at Cassidy’s home, which authorities suspect he set fire to when he left the home at about 5:40 a.m. Wednesday.
