First of all, Dimes Square isn’t a square, it’s a triangle. Technically, the infamous headquarters of a hyper-specific, hyper-online scene of overeducated young tastemakers (Artists? Influencers? Rich kids? Whatever) falls at the intersection of Ludlow Street and Canal on New York’s Lower East Side, but metaphorically, Dimes Square occupies both a number of adjacent city blocks and the minds of New York City media professionals, few of whom have yet grown tired of talking about the place. In the past few weeks alone, the trend pieces and analyses have continued to stack up. On Aug. 9, The New York Times weighed in on the burgeoning Catholicism trend: young Dimes Square acolytes like Wet Brain podcaster Honor Levy are acknowledging their mortal sins and embracing religious ritual, apparently. In July, Women’s Wear Daily ran two Dimes Square pieces in one day; a particularly dizzying scene dispatch in The Baffler from May proclaims that “this [Dimes Square] moment is straight out of Jewish mysticism (this section is called ‘Go Piss Girl walks down Shtiebel Way’).” On Wednesday, Bon Appétit sniffily proclaimed in...

The family’s takeout dinner debate is raging. One wants Thai. Another is thinking sushi. Mediterranean is always appealing. So is Filipino food. And how about spicy fried chicken? Local Kitchens was created to solve that dilemma. This “micro food hall” offers several restaurant concepts in one location but differs from the “ghost kitchen” format in a few key ways. First, customers may order takeout or delivery from all the concepts at one time. Second, many Local Kitchens are situated in retail areas and not industrial districts. And, unlike most ghost kitchens, they typically offer a small amount of seating for customers. The newest in this “mix and match” dining concept has just opened in Campbell’s Hamilton Plaza shopping center, two months after the company branched out to Los Gatos. On the menu in both Campbell and Los Gatos are offerings from eight restaurants: Senor Sisig, The Melt, SAJJ Mediterranean, Sushiritto, Proposition Chicken, Rooster and Rice, The Plant and Humphry Slocombe ice cream. Other Bay Area locations can be found in Cupertino, Lafayette, Mountain View, Palo Alto and San Jose. Restaurant...

On Thursday night, it seemed there was no more exclusive place to be in Miami than the District 7 town hall Zoom chat room. As local officials, scientists, and advocates spoke during the one-hour conversation, Miamians were furiously typing their thoughts on what has quickly become the biggest topic of conversation in the area: the under-the-radar approval to pursue a pilot program for a homeless encampment in Virginia Key. “This will be a bigger mistake than the Metro Rail system,” one commenter posted in the chat to over 200 residents at 7:10 p.m. While the full effects of the niche insult can only be enjoyed by anyone who has suffered through Miami’s illogical two-line rail system, it speaks volumes about the public sentiment around the plan to erect up to 100 “tiny homes” on a historic barrier island with a stained racial history. The encampment plan has spurred outrage from every type of Miamian: environmentalists who are worried about destroying the island’s already endangered ecosystem, outdoor enthusiasts concerned about ruined recreational activities, and homeless advocates sounding the alarm about the...

by Reagan Reese   The chairman of a top House education committee along with 64 Democrats are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to maintain “race-conscious admission policies” at Harvard University and University of North Carolina, according to a brief. Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA), a non-profit that fights race-based policies, petitioned the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit to overturn Grutter v. Bollinger, a ruling that kept race-conscious admissions polices in place at higher education institutions. U.S. House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott of Virginia filed an amicus brief asking SCOTUS to uphold affirmative action and dismiss the cases next term. Using a race-conscious admissions process “dismantles segregation and enhances educational opportunities for all Americans,” the brief stated. Students for Fair Admissions also argued that Harvard allegedly discriminates by putting a specific limit on the number of minorities accepted into the university, the SFFA petition states. “Even with the use of a race-conscious admissions program, the University of North Carolina ‘continues to face challenges admitting and enrolling underrepresented minorities, particularly African American males, Hispanics, and Native Americans,’” the brief said. by Laurel Duggan   U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney allowed Visa to remain a defendant in a lawsuit charging the company with conspiracy in circulating child sexual abuse materials July 29, according to court materials. Rape and child abuse survivors and victims of porn revenge are suing MindGeek, the company that runs PornHub, for allegedly circulating child sex abuse materials, according to the lawsuit. Carney suggested that Visa holds some responsibility for knowingly profiting off of child pornography. Visa is MindGeek’s payment processor and, according to Carney, was responsible for facilitating MindGeek’s business, including the monetization of child pornography. “Visa lent to MindGeek a much-needed tool — its payment network — with the alleged knowledge that there was a wealth of monetized child porn on MindGeek’s websites,” Carney wrote. On Friday, a US District Judge found Visa complicit in the monetization of child porn on Pornhub. pic.twitter.com/or1u6YKcAF — Michael Austin (@mikeswriting) August 2, 2022 The individuals who posted the videos were responsible for the harm done, not the company itself, Visa said, according to The Washington Post. The Federal Election Commission threatened outgoing Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) with potential legal enforcement action for failing to report his campaign's finances during the weeks before and after his May 17 primary defeat. Cawthorn was due to file a report to the FEC on July 15 detailing what his campaign raised and spent between late April and the end of June, but the Cawthorn campaign has kept the FEC in the dark as of Wednesday afternoon. "The failure to timely file a complete report may result in civil money penalties, an audit or legal enforcement action," the FEC warned Cawthorn in a letter on Monday. The FEC noted that Cawthorn is unlikely to escape fines in the matter, as the civil penalty calculation does not include a grace period and begins the day following the due date of the report. MADISON CAWTHORN IMPLICATED IN POTENTIAL INSIDER TRADING SCHEME, EXPERTS SAY Cawthorn filed a statement of organization with the FEC on July 15, identifying himself as the treasurer and custodian of records for his campaign,...
RETAIL workers, current and former, have taken to TikTok to share some of their bizarre customer experiences. Now, one TikTok user is sharing some of the strange customer interactions she had when working in a cinema. 2Amanda has detailed some of the bizarre customer interactions she had while working at the cinemaCredit: tiktok.com/@continentalbreakfast 2One customer threatened her and another called her a "little b****"Credit: tiktok.com/@continentalbreakfast/ Amanda, who posts to the video-sharing app as @continentalbreakfast, says she worked in her local cinema for nine years, and it was here that she dealt with some truly nightmarish customers. Amanda says that her first nightmarish customer interaction occurred just seven months after she started the job, and led to the customer complaining to her supervisor and calling her a “disgrace.” The cinema she worked in had two kiosks on either side of the foyer, with one being for ticks, kids meals, popcorn and other snacks, while the one Amanda was working on was just for coffee, ice cream and pick ‘n’ mix. This caused one mum to kick off after she went to...
The showrunner for the doomed lesbian teen vampire drama First Kill is speaking out about Netflix’s decision to cancel the show. The streaming service said the series didn’t build a strong enough following after its eight episodes were released back in June. Felicia D. Henderson says the company’s top brass gave her hope that this would change, even as they failed to put their advertising might behind it. “When I got the call to tell me they weren’t renewing the show because the completion rate wasn’t high enough, of course, I was very disappointed,” Henderson told The Daily Beast via email. “What showrunner wouldn’t be? I’d been told a couple of weeks ago that they were hoping completion would get higher. I guess it didn’t.” Fans told The Daily Beast that they barely saw any promo for the show and mostly learned about it on social media. Henderson, who is currently recovering from a bout of COVID, says the streaming service didn’t sell potential audiences on everything it had to offer. “The art for the initial marketing was beautiful,”...

Eating a burger and fries or two sausages a day may raise your risk of suffering from Alzheimer's, scientists behind a major study have found. Brazilian researchers who monitored 10,000 people for ten years found those who got a quarter of their calories from processed foods — also including soft drinks and nuggets — had a 28 percent greater cognitive decline than those who had less. They called on people to cook for themselves more and consume non-processed foods such as grains, vegetables and fish more regularly. About 58 percent of the average American diet is processed food, while in Canada it is as high as 48 percent studies suggest. High sugar, salt and fat content in the processed foods was behind the more rapid cognitive decline because it raised inflammation, experts said. They added this was a clear sign people should cook for themselves more often at home. ODESA, Ukraine—Russia has been bombarding the seaside city of Odesa since the earliest days of its war in Ukraine—but the critical grain port has become a symbol of ongoing local resistance, where even former pro-Russian stalwarts are now embracing Ukrainian patriotism. “The longer the war goes on, fewer people sympathize with Russia in Ukraine. Those who spoke Russian in everyday life, switch to Ukrainian,” a long-time observer of Ukraine’s politics, Yevgeny Kisilyev, told The Daily Beast on Tuesday. “Even the most openly pro-Russian politicians, including Odesa’s mayor … have turned into passionate enemies of [Russian president Vladimir] Putin’s regime.” Odesa, with its huge grain storage and shipping resources, is a much-desired target for Moscow. Russian missiles have been destroying the city since the first days of the war. In March and April, missiles killed dozens of civilians, including a three-month-old baby girl, Kira Glodan, her mother, and her grandmother. The tragedy angered Odesa but the massacre did not stop. On July 1, one of the missiles hit an apartment block in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, killing 19 people. Weeks later, on July 20,...

A pregnant buffalo who was expected to deliver her first baby in a couple months was found shot dead, northwestern Pennsylvania farmers tell Daily Voice.  Her name was Pinky Tuscololo, because of her pink tongue, which the owners tell us is very unusual for a buffalo. The farmers love their buffalos and raise them for riding and as pets, Cindi (Fosburg) Miller explained in an email to Daily Voice.  "We got her when she was just a baby with her sister Leather. Leather has been mourning ever since the incident. It's very sad to hear her cries," Miller says. The farmers began searching for Pinky when she did not show up to be fed at the farm on Mickle Hollow Road in Bloomfield Township around 6:30 a.m. July 15, according to the Pennsylvania state police. Pinky was found about five hours after she had been shot, the family tells us.  Through an investigation, it was determined she had been shot with a rifle and later died from her injuries, PSP stated in a release.  "We currently have 11 buffalo in...

Three decades on from their heyday, the 90s supermodels are still the reigning queens of the catwalk, but it takes a lot of sacrifices to keep their age-defying looks.  It used to be that models as young as 30 would be considered too old for photoshoots or to strut their stuff on the catwalk, but now, stars over 50 like Carl Bruni, 54, Naomi Campbell, 52, and Cindy Crawford, 56, are in high demand. In 2021, seven of the top 25 ranking models were 90s stars, but longevity comes at a price and at an age when they might have been able to take a more relaxed approach, they're now having to work twice as hard than their younger counterparts at keeping their bodies looking flawless,  Louise Bula, Dietitian at MyJuniper.co.uk, explained that a woman's body goes through a lot of changes as she gets older, which makes it trickier to lose weight thanks to the menopause and hormonal changes. Bruni, who is a mother-of-two and married to the former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, admitted earlier this summer than she makes 'unspeakable' efforts...

Georgia cops who arrested Brianna Grier, a 28-year-old Black woman, failed to secure her with a seatbelt or even close the passenger-side rear door at all before she fell to her death from a patrol car, according to an update issued by state investigators this week. The Hancock County Sheriff’s office initially told the family that Grier, who was experiencing a mental-health crisis, had kicked open the door herself when she first was arrested on July 15, according to Brianna’s father, Marvin Grier. For their part, the officer driving the vehicle said, “As I turned to see what Brianna Grier was doing, I hear the passenger-side rear door open,” according to sheriff’s office documents obtained by 13WMAZ, a local CBS affiliate. But the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s newest findings, which were released Wednesday, painted a darker picture of the incident. As The Daily Beast reported last week, Grier had been experiencing increasingly troublesome symptoms of her schizophrenia and her family worried she had stopped taking her medication. Normally, the young woman loved to dance and sing to rap and...
ODESA, Ukraine—The intensive care unit at Odesa’s Regional Children Hospital was crowded with babies who were born prematurely. The lone doctor on duty and the three nurses who were working the third floor were exhausted. Air raid sirens blared intermittently during the day, but the staff were confined to their unit with the 11 tiny babies hooked to oxygen and feeding tubes. Since the start of the war, Odesa’s doctors have registered a significant spike in the number of premature babies, up to 25 percent more than usual, which hospital officials attribute to stress. Odesa now admits displaced mothers-to-be from all over Ukraine’s southern regions, including occupied Kherson and war-torn Mykolaiv. The doctor on duty at the pathology department, Lyudmila Vdovina, said some of the babies in the intensive care unit had serious pathologies. “We receive patients from different badly bombed regions, where pregnant women suffer overwhelming stress. The increase of prematurely born babies” is now clear, she told The Daily Beast. “You cannot imagine what these women go through.” When another air raid siren went off, the hospital’s...
Heat waves are undulating across swaths of the U.S. and around the world, causing record-breaking temperatures and thousands of deaths. Scientists predict that climate change will only make these waves more frequent and dangerous, particularly in regions where cooling infrastructure like air conditioning isn’t widespread. Well, luckily (or unluckily), there is a contingent of biohackers who have a solution that doesn’t involve addressing the ongoing climate crisis. Their approach lies in raising our own tolerance to heat. Or, to poorly paraphrase Shakespeare: What if the fault were not in the sun, but in ourselves? Samuel Sanchez, a personal trainer and proponent of biological optimization, told The Daily Beast that he uses a number of methods to increase his and his clients’ heat tolerance. That includes exercising in bulky sweaters; spending time in infrared saunas; holding gel ice packs; and taking supplements of L-citrulline, an amino acid, to increase blood flow. “There's not too much of a distinction between athletic performance and day-to-day activity,” Sanchez said. “Pushing that ceiling a little bit further can help absolutely anyone.” Other biohackers promote...

by Max Keating   China has carried out a sustained, decade-long economic espionage operation to infiltrate the U.S. Federal Reserve, according to a report released Tuesday by the Republican staff of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Chinese operatives have employed both bribery and coercion to garner influence with employees of the Federal Reserve system in attempts to get them to provide sensitive information about the U.S. economy to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the report shows. At least 13 individuals across eight of the Fed’s 12 locations were identified as persons of interest in the report for having ties with Chinese government institutions and talent recruitment programs. In one instance a Fed employee was detained no less than four times during a 2019 trip to Shanghai, and Chinese officials threatened his family to coerce him to give them sensitive macroeconomic data on the U.S. economy, according to the report. Chinese officials allegedly also tapped the employee’s computer, copied his coworkers’ contacts and forced him to sign a letter that he wouldn’t discuss their engagements at threat...

Former President Donald Trump’s first return to Washington, D.C. since leaving last January has reanimated the back-stabby factions within the MAGA faithful—rival groups who have spent the time since his departure planning a way back to power, and who are intent on keeping others out. The ex-president will be in town on Tuesday to address the America First Policy Institute, a relatively new, Trump-aligned nonprofit group, which this week convened countless MAGA-loving policy wonks and loyalists for a two-day conference in a hotel basement blocks away from the Capitol building. The agenda, AFPI says, is heavy on legislative goals crafted ahead of what they hope is a Republican return to power in Washington after the midterm elections and beyond. A source close to Trump told The Daily Beast that despite the cloud of investigations over his head, the former commander-in-chief has been “excited” about his return to the swamp. The keynote will offer “an opportunity to present a binary contrast between America under Trump and America under Biden,” according to the source, who regularly speaks with the ex-president. “People are...
by Gabe Kaminsky   Residents in Minneapolis are crowdfunding to get off-duty police officers to patrol the streets as the city continues to experience staffing shortages and an uptick in violent crime. The Minneapolis Safety Initiative (MSI), a nonprofit seeking to increase law and order, is raising money to “buyback officer patrols.” Funds that are raised through the volunteer-led initiative will be sent to the Minneapolis Police Department to get officers deployed for shifts that the officers would otherwise not be working, MSI says. “Officers working a buyback shift patrol in MPD vehicles, respond to 911 calls, and deter criminals—just as they do in a normal shift,” according to MSI. “All people working on this initiative are volunteers. There are fees for payment processing but otherwise, all contributions will go directly to paying for MPD buyback officer patrols.” A $210,000 contract for MSI was approved by the Minneapolis City Council in January, the Minnesota Daily reported. The program lets MSI crowdfund to acquire additional patrols for areas, the outlet reported. The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in June that Minneapolis has to maintain at least 731...

Royalist is The Daily Beast’s newsletter for all things royal and Royal Family. Subscribe here to get it in your inbox every Sunday. The royal family are known for their love of novelty Christmas presents—lavatory seats, comedy mugs and singing toy hamsters have all been reported over the years—but the Royalist assumes Queen Elizabeth won’t be unwrapping a copy of Prince Harry’s big chunky hardback memoir which promises to be a “heartfelt and intimate” account of his life in the royal family this festive season. Millions of her subjects, however, probably will, after reports Monday that the memoir has been finished, handed in to the publishers, and signed off by lawyers. There had been speculation that the memoir had been delayed or even cancelled as the publishers have not yet given a date for publication or announced a publicity schedule. However there now seems every possibility that Penguin Random House will indeed have the book on shelves in time for the key Thanksgiving and Christmas markets. The Sun reports that ghostwriter JR Moehringer, who co-authored Andre Agassi’s autobiography Open,...

by Reagan Reese   The alleged attacker of New York Republican Rep. and gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin has been released from jail just hours after allegedly attempting to stab the politician with a sharp object, authorities announced early Friday. David Jakubonis allegedly climbed on stage and attempted to stab Zeldin saying, “you’re done” during a campaign stop in Perinton, New York, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release. Jakubonis was arrested and charged with second-degree attempted assault, then released from jail “on his own recognizance,” the sheriff’s office said. Zeldin predicted the release of his attacker, saying Jakubonis will “instantly be released under New York’s laws” in a Thursday night tweet. His words as he tried to stab me a few hours ago were “you’re done”, but several attendees, including @EspositoforNY, quickly jumped into action & tackled the guy. With two weeks to go until a primary election he was fated to lose, Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) was already underwater. His campaign held more than twice as much debt as it had cash on hand, the donor well was dry, and he and his staff were months into a madcap spending streak that one campaign source called “baffling.” And now, after indeed losing that primary, there’s no money to pay the piper. Specifically, there’s no money to repay the supporters who donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in advance to Cawthorn’s election efforts beyond the primary—to the general election he now won’t be competing in. Cawthorn is required by law to refund those donations. Instead, according to a campaign source, the campaign already spent the money. The public doesn’t know any of this yet, however, because the Cawthorn campaign is now a week late in submitting the quarterly Federal Election Commission report that would disclose the collapse. That delay will already trigger an automatic fine. The breach of fiduciary obligations follows a string of personal and professional embarrassments...

Daily Wire host Matt Walsh is drawing attention for comments he directed towards women who are not interested in having children. On a recent episode of his podcast, The Matt Walsh Show, in a video circulating on Twitter (via Media Matters’ Jason Campbell) Walsh advised, “If conceiving a child would be disastrous for you, you believe, then do not participate in activities that literally billions of times in the past have resulted in the conception of a child.” “I’ll phrase it this way. Cause I really wanna make it very simple for these people. They have difficulty understanding complex concepts, so gotta dumb it down as much as possible,” Walsh said. “If reproduction would be a disaster for you, you believe, then do not participate in the reproductive act…” “Because if you are able to — reproduce, no matter what else you do, you can make it the quote unquote safest kind of sex you want. There’s always still gonna be a chance that you reproduce,” Walsh added. “And if that chance would be like plunging off of a cliff...
