When Donald Trump was pictured at his golf course outside Washington D.C. without his clubs it triggered a wave of speculation that he had picked the open-air venue for a meeting with lawyers and plotters beyond the reach of FBI surveillance. Online conspiracy theorists fancied they'd spotted a mustachioed former lawyer to the president and a campaigner known for working to overturn the election. But the fanciful thinking tickled Trump World insiders who said it was nothing quite so exciting: It was a tour of facilities as his company plans upgrades. 'This is probably the funniest story I've heard in years. His family owns and operates golf courses and hotels all around the world,' said a source familiar with the visit. 'They visit the courses a lot.' Trump even played golf after lunch, he added.  Among the fanciful claims that went viral was one by Michael Cohen, who was once Trump's fixer before a spectacular falling out, who claimed he had been told that the former president was meeting with two lawyers. She once famously sang: 'I stay up too late, got nothing on my brain.' But students at the University of Texas at Austin will do well to not follow in Taylor Swift's footsteps when they study her lyrics on a radical new literary course, featuring fellow artistic heavyweights William Shakespeare and John Keats. The new course, The Taylor Swift Songbook, will allow undergraduates to live out their Wildest Dreams by studying the popstar's songwriting as part of its liberal arts program. The University of Texas at Austin is holding a course on Taylor Swift's lyrics as part of its liberal arts program (pictured at the graduation ceremony for New York University in May) English professor Elizabeth Scala told CNN Swift's lyrics can help illuminate similar techniques found in classic poetry.  She said: 'This is a course on her songs as literary writing and the ways a popular and award-winning writer uses the same literary devices, figures, and tropes of traditional poetry in her work. It is not about celebrity or fame. English professor Elizabeth Scala said Swift's lyrics can help...
    R. Kelly's federal trial in Chicago set to start Monday will include testimony from a woman who Kelly allegedly filmed himself having sex with when she was 14 years old, and he was about 30.  Kelly allegedly paid off and threatened the girl to ensure she did not testify in his 2008 state child pornography trial. This trial, which is separate from the 2021 New York case that resulted in the singer receiving a 30-year prison term, is in many respects a do-over of the rigged 2008 trial.  The woman, who is now her 30s, has not been named, is expected to provide pivotal testimony that could put Kelly Even just one or two convictions in Chicago could add decades to Kelly's New York sentence, which would already see him behind bars until he is at least 80 before. R. Kelly was removed from suicide watch after the disgraced R&B superstar's attorney said he was subjected to the 'harsh conditions' of isolation as a form of punishment 'R. Kelly is not suicidal. The first time Matt Fitzpatrick played at St Andrews, he was literally watched by a man, a woman, and their dog. Today, as the game’s newest major champion, he will be announced in one of the glamour groups for the first round of the 150th Open on Thursday. Back in the mists of time it was just his mum, dad and the family pet who cheered him on as he came through 36 holes of qualifying followed by four matches to win a junior title. ‘I reached the final again the following year to continue my early love affair with St Andrews but it’s been all downhill here ever since,’ said the 27-year-old, cheerfully. Former President Trump hit the links at his West Palm Beach golf course on Friday, days after announcing via email statement his hole-in-one and as President Biden took a swipe at him being 'reckless' with spending and creating 'record budget deficits.' The ex-president, in photos obtained by DailyMail.com, sported his trademark 'Make America Great Again' ballcap, a white polo shirt and dark slacks - and golfed with at least two partners. Meanwhile, President Biden took a swipe at Trump during his remarks on the latest job numbers. 'It was the previous administration whose reckless policies and mismanagement led to the record budget deficits in my administration, that's getting the deficit under control,' he said, referring to 2020 when the Trump administration signed on to record relief spending for the coronavirus pandemic.  Biden also touted his newly released $6 trillion budget plan, which raises taxes by $2.5 trillion and he says will trim the deficit by $1 trillion over the next decade.   'Under my predecessor the federal budget deficit went up every single year, every year. As I committed when I was...

Photo by Leon Neal/Getty Images New York City mayor Bill de Blasio tabbed a homeless shelter operator to evict Donald Trump from his golf course and the former president is predictably enraged. In 2012, Trump reached a 20-year deal to build and operate the links at Ferry Point, a Jack Nicklaus-designed public golf course in the Bronx. At the time, Michael Bloomberg was serving as New York City Mayor. Nine years into the partnership, de Blasio seeks to dump Trump in favor of a new operator. NEW! President Donald J. BOSTON (CBS) – For the first time ever the Boston Marathon is being run in October and that change will bring several other changes to the 125th edition of the race. The most noticeable will be the size. FIELD SIZE The field of 18,252 runners will be smaller than usual as the marathon returns for the first time in more than two-and-a-half years. That’s the smallest field of runners since 2002. The 2019 race had more than 31,500 runners, 36-percent more than this year’s race. While the overall field is smaller, the number of official charity runners, approximately 2,400, will not change. There will also be more than 27,000 others running 26.2 miles elsewhere – attempting to earn a finisher’s medal in a virtual version of the race. COVID RULES Those running from Hopkinton to Boston will need to either provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or produce a negative COVID-19 test in order to participate. Masks will not be required while running the course through eight cities and towns, but they’re required on the buses out to the starting line....

The course description, according to a syllabus obtained by DailyMail.com, says: 'America's rapidly advancing partisan divide is fueled substantially by the growing political polarization increasingly evident in our news media.' This time, NASCAR’s best will take on the Daytona Road Course in a 70-lap, 253-mile shootout. Here are three drivers to watch for this weekend who could contend for a win. Chase Elliott Chase Elliott has proven to undoubtedly be the best full-time road course racer in NASCAR. Of his 10 career wins, five of them have been on road courses, including last summer at Daytona. Elliott has also won the last four Cup Series road-course races dating back to Watkins Glen in 2019. Coming off a Cup Series championship, NASCAR’s most popular driver is looking to get on the board early in 2021 with a win. AJ Allmendinger After racing part-time in the Xfinity Series in both 2019 and 2020, AJ Allmendinger is back in the Cup Series. He’ll run a...

SUN Racing is back to give you some insight on big horses at even bigger prices. Here, we try to find the value bets which could net you a tasty return from a small stake. 1 Longshot HONEST VIC (3.00 Newbury) Henry Daly’s battler finished last season with a close-up fifth in the red-hot Coral Cup at Cheltenham. He stepped up on that when winning at Prestbury Park on comeback with four lengths in hand. That took some doing and he saw out every yard of this trip. This is a hotter race but he deserves his place. Each way thief SULLY D’OC AA (2.25 Newbury) It’s taken a little while for this six-year-old to find his feet over fences but he came good in fine style when winning at Ascot last time. Maybe the tongue tie made the difference as he scored with almost five lengths in hand. Phil Mickelson has never won the U.S. Open and, after his first round Thursday, it didn’t appear he was going to make the cut to stay in the tournament through the weekend. Mickelson finished with an opening-round 79 – which was good for 11-over par and put him in second-to-last place at Winged Foot. ZACH JOHNSON NAILS INCREDIBLE PUTT FOR BIRDIE AT US OPEN “I drove it poorly, and I putted poorly,” he told reporters after his round. “Lefty” said he would play as hard as he could in the second round to try to make the cut. But the near improbable task appeared to be impossible. Justin Thomas led the field after the first round with a 65 – the lowest U.S. Open score ever shot at the course. Mickelson came into the event hoping to have some fun. But there was nothing fun about the five-hour slog through the course. As he headed to the ninth tee box, the broadcast showed that he had hit 14,477 tee shots since hitting his last fairway at Winged Foot – in 2006,...
President Donald Trump is a member at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York, where the U.S. Open is being contested this week. It’s a notoriously tough layout — but Trump is claiming he routinely scores well enough that he probably should have entered the tournament. Appearing on Fox Sports Radio Thursday morning, the president was asked by host Clay Travis what his best score has been on the supremely difficult track. “Low 70s, quite a bit,” Trump replied. “I’ve been a member there a long time. I could do pretty well.” Par at Winged Foot is 70. Geoff Ogilvy, who won the U.S. Open the last time it was played at Winged Foot in 2006, shot rounds of 71, 70, 72, and 72 en route to his victory at +5. The winning score is predicted to be similar in this year’s championships. So four rounds in the low 70s would make Trump a contender to win the tournament. To be clear, Trump did not make the claim that he could shoot in the low 70s this week. There’s a...
CYPRESS (CBSLA) — Another horse died over the weekend at the Los Alamitos Race Course after suffering racing injuries. Billy the Hott, a 5-year-old gelding, was removed from a race on Saturday and then died a short time later, the race track said. File photo (credit: Los Alamitos Race Course) This marks the 24th horse to die at that facility in a racing or training injury this year alone. Repetitive deaths have sparked protests against for such horse racing tracks to be shut down. Races have continued at Los Alamitos without crowds due to coronavirus restrictions but the extreme heat on Saturday and Sunday were also concerns. Saturday’s high in Los Alamitos was 104 degrees and Sunday’s forecast called for a high of 102. According to the California Horse Racing Board, a “heat stress index” (HSI) should be used to determine if it is safe enough for horses to race. “Horses generate a tremendous amount of heat even during relatively short episodes of intense exercise, such as racing. Horses, as humans, dissipate heat by sweat,” according to a statement from...
(CBS Local/CBS Minnesota)- The PGA Tour rolls into Blaine, Minnesota this week for the second edition of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. The course, a par-71, 7,468-yard links course, was designed by Arnold Palmer and Tom Lehman to originally hold a PGA Tour Champions event. Following the final 3M Championship in 2018, the course underwent renovations to be lengthened and made more difficult to challenge the PGA Tour golfers who would be taking it on starting with the 2019 3M Open. RELATED :TPC Twin Cities Course Profile Though the course was renovated, it proved to be golfer-friendly during last year’s event with the winner, Matthew Wolff, carding a 21-under to edge out Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa for the win. That said, the low scoring didn’t allow anyone to run away from the field and in fact, provided for a dramatic ending. After Dechambeau eagled on 18 to go up one stroke, Wolff carded an eagle of his own to win. AMAZING!
When University of Texas at Austin senior Stephanie Flores-Reyes checked her fall course schedule earlier this week, she was shocked to see all five of her classes were slated to only be online. But as an international student from Mexico who spends the school year here on an F-1 student visa, it could suddenly be problematic for Flores-Reyes to be enrolled only in classes that meet online because of the coronavirus pandemic. On Monday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced that nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 visa holders in the United States under the Student Exchange Visitor Program will not be allowed to enter or stay in the country if they are attending American schools that will offer only online classes this fall. Instead, they must either transfer to a school with in-person instruction or “potentially face immigration consequences," according to a release. For students attending schools with hybrid plans, the category most Texas universities will fall under as they forge ahead with a mixture of in-person and online classes this fall, colleges must certify to ICE that the students are...

It took 25 years, but late musical icon Selena Quintanilla now has a Texas college course exploring her life and career. Beginning fall 2020, the University of Texas at San Antonio will begin offering Selena: A Mexican American Identity and Experience. The course will employ the pop star's image, use of language, and the media coverage surrounding her career and death to map out the historical trajectory of Tejana/o Mexican-Americans in Texas."When I got to UTSA five years ago, I was surprised that someone hadn't already done a class like this," says the course's instructor, Dr. Sonya M. Aleman, associate professor of Mexican American studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio."To me, it makes perfect sense that there would be (a class) where Selena's the springboard to talk about issues of representation, identity, and race and racialization."Read more from our partners at Culturemap.
