Share this: ON THIS DAY IN 1898, a Brooklyn Daily Eagle editorial said, “They say that [Sen.] Thomas C. Platt is now willing ‘to make or take’ Theodore Roosevelt. That is, he is now willing to have Theodore Roosevelt nominated for governor by the Republican state convention. Why not? Mr. Roosevelt has always been a ‘regular Republican.’ He has always been a machine man. We know that these will be regarded as words of reproach by some and of misdescription by others. But they are true. He never bolted a convention of his party. He never supported an opposition ticket. He never took a less than active part in every state and national campaign since manhood. Incredulity may be excited by these statements. Let examination test them. They will be found liberally true. Mr. Roosevelt’s personality is one thing. His party relationship is another. The machine has more than once stood in front of his ambition. He has never once gone against it as an independent, a reformer, a mugwump or anything of that kind.” *** ON THIS DAY IN...

In humans, the later stages of pregnancy can be difficult because the foetus presses against a woman's diaphragm and makes it hard to breathe. But some snakes have the same problem every time they eat. That's because those that constrict their prey before swallowing it have to overcome the challenges of breathing while their lungs are restricted. 'With no diaphragm, they rely entirely on motions of their ribs,' said John Capano, of Brown University in the US. He said snakes like boa constrictors adjust which region of the ribcage they use to inhale, depending on whether they are resting, throttling an animal or digesting.  Snakes like boa constrictors (pictured) adjust which region of the ribcage they use to inhale, depending on whether they are resting, throttling an animal or digesting BOA CONSTRICTORS: THE KEY FACTS  The boa constrictor can grow up to a whopping 13ft (4m) in length and live for up to 30 years. The battle of the births, summer 2018. I sat with a group of other new mothers in a cafe after a baby music group, eating carrot cake and commiserating about our infants’ rude refusal to sleep through the night.  Inevitably, talk turned to births. One forthright lady I’d not met before told us about her long labour, endured with only gas and air. When I mentioned the caesarean I’d had — without labouring beforehand — I felt her zeroing in on me.  ‘So it wasn’t an emergency C-section?’ she inquired. No, I replied. ‘Was your baby breech?’ Again, no.  UK-based writer Clare Foges argues that we need to rethink the way we view women choosing to have C-sections (file image) After further probing, I told her that a long-running health issue — a damaged coccyx — had been behind my decision. ‘Do you know how much more expensive a C-section is than a natural birth?’ she asked, continuing: I suppose, in a way, my natural birth subsidised your operation!’ In the cafe, you could hear a teaspoon drop. Such views aren’t...

by Cole Lauterbach   Arizona’s high court has elaborated on their decision to void additions to the most-recent state budget, saying lawmakers ran afoul of provisions in the state constitution meant to simplify legislation. Justices released their unanimous opinion Thursday in Arizona School Boards Association et al. v. State of Arizona. The ruling, initially announced in September, affirmed a lower court ruling that said the Legislature went against two parts of the Arizona Constitution. The opinion nullifies the state’s ban on mask mandates in schools, laws shoring up local election security and other laws justices concluded had little to do with the state budget. The constitution’s “title provision” says lawmakers cannot include extemporaneous provisions into a proposal that doesn’t relate to the topic it’s named after. Should those extra facets of a bill be struck down by the court, the rest of the bill would stand. “Although the bills’ challenged sections may superficially relate to those subjects, this does not satisfy the requisite inquiry,” the opinion read. “Contrary to the State’s claim, a closer examination of the challenged sections manifests...

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — The final giant chunk of an overturned cargo ship was removed from waters along the coast of Georgia on Monday, almost a year after demolition began on the wreck that tipped over with 4,200 automobiles in its cargo decks. Weighing more than 4,000 metric tons (4,410 U.S. tons), the eighth and last section of the South Korean freighter Golden Ray left the wreck site off St. Simons Island after a crane lowered it onto a big barge outfitted with a special cradle to hold the wreckage. “This is the end of the wreck removal phase,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Himes, a spokesman for the multiagency command in charge of the demolition. But the salvage job isn’t over. Big pieces of the ship’s side and other debris were left behind after the ship’s center, the most damaged part of the vessel, was cut in two, Himes said. Those were the final two sections removed. Cleanup of that debris and stray wreckage that fell from the other larger sections, including some cars, will...

SACRAMENTO —  California became the first state in the nation Saturday to adopt a law requiring large retail stores to provide gender neutral toy sections under a bill signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The new law, which takes effect in 2024, says that retail stores with 500 or more employees must sell some toys and childcare products outside of areas specifically labeled by gender. Retailers can continue to offer other toys and childcare goods in traditional boys and girls sections if they choose to. Newsom offered no comment on the bill signing, one of several announced in the final batch of legislative actions weighed for the year. Assembly Bill 1084 continues a gradual shift in the retail industry away from strictly marketing children’s products under traditional gender stereotypes, said Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Campbell), who introduced the legislation. Target dropped boys and girls toy sections in 2015, and other retailers have since moved away from gender-specific labels. “Part of it is to make sure if you’re a young girl that you can find a police car, fire truck, a...

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday will deem some Republican-backed budget provisions unconstitutional attempts to restrict COVID-19 public health measures but allow language limiting potential state and municipal vaccination requirements. LONDON (AP) — Standing sections are set to return to Premier League stadiums for the first time in 27 years. British authorities on Wednesday announced a pilot scheme that will allow some clubs to trial licensed standing areas from January, ending a blanket ban on such sections in top stadiums. ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Salvage crews have finished cutting apart the last two sections of a cargo ship that overturned along the Georgia coast two years ago, officials said Sunday. The multiagency command overseeing demolition of the South Korean freighter Golden Ray said in a news release that the final cut was completed Saturday. Both massive chunks are awaiting removal by barge from the waters off St. Simons Island about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of Savannah. The Golden Ray capsized soon after leaving the Port of Brunswick with 4,200 vehicles in its cargo decks on Sept. 8, 2019. Wednesday will mark two years since the ship overturned. Crews spent the past 10 months using a towering crane straddling the shipwreck to cut it into eight giant sections — using anchor chain to tear through the hull like a blunt-edged saw. Progress was slowed several times, most notably when the shipwreck caught fire in May and at the end of July when large amounts of oil gushed from the vessel’s remnants and fouled the shoreline. The bill does not seek to prohibit boys and girls sections in department stores but rather is aimed at requiring stores to have a gender-neutral section displaying items "regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys," according to the AP.  The bill would only affect department stores with 500 or more employees and would also not apply to clothes but only to toys and "childcare items," the AP noted.  California lawmakers have previously tried to bass this bill at least three times and first embarked on this latest attempt in March. Assemblyman Evan Low (D), who authored the current bill, told the AP that it was inspired by a 10-year-old girl named Britten whose mother works in his office. "Britten asked her mom while shopping why certain things in a store were 'off limits' to her because she was a girl, but would be fine if she was a...
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Salvage crews Monday began cutting apart the final two sections that remain of a cargo ship the overturned along the coast of Georgia nearly two years ago. Demolition of the South Korean freighter Golden Ray has been underway since November, when workers began using a towering crane straddling the shipwreck to cut it into eight giant sections — using anchor chain to tear through the hull like a blunt-edged saw. The sixth mammoth piece was loaded onto a barge and removed less the two weeks ago, following days of delay when the newly severed segment began gushing oil that spilled into surrounding waters and fouled nearby marshes and beach on St. Simons Island. The final cut to separate the remainder of the ship into its final two sections began Monday, the multi-agency command overseeing the demolition said in a news release. It said shoreline response teams are still spreading an absorbent material made from peat moss to soak up oil from marsh grasses. It’s unknown how long the final cut will...
New York (CNN Business)Old Navy will end its practice of separate plus-size sections for women's clothing in stores and online and begin offering all of its women's apparel in sizes 0 to 30. The move comes as online fashion brands such as Eloquii, Dia & Co., Elvi and Torrid gain success targeting younger shoppers looking for a more inclusive range of clothing sizes than retailers have offered in the past. Traditional retailers such as Target (TGT), Nike (NKE) and Nordstrom (JWN) have also broadened their size options. Part of that is because Lane Bryant, a specialty retailer for plus-size styles, has closed more than 200 stores in recent years, opening up a void in the market. At Old Navy's 1,200 shops, all of its women's offerings starting Friday will be showcased together, along with new mannequins throughout the store in sizes four, 12 and 18. Signs will highlight the changes, and prices will be the same across sizes. Gap is launching a home line through Walmart Online, Old Navy's women's and women's plus-size collections will be merged together in one navigation...

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Demolition crews have finished cutting away the sixth of eight sections of a giant cargo ship that tipped over off the Georgia coast nearly two years ago, leaving just one more cut before the dwindling remains are completely removed. Separation of the section occurred late Friday, said Michael Himes, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard Unified Command. Sometime Saturday, a pilot will steer the sixth section away from the rest of the Golden Ray’s half-submerged wreckage in waters between St. Simons and Jekyll islands, The Brunswick News reported. The 3,695-metric-ton (4,073 U.S. tons) mass of steel is hanging suspended by tension wire from the arching rafters of the 255-foot-tall (85-yard-tall) VB 10,000. The VB 10,000 and its load sit inside the 1-mile-perimeter environmental protection barrier that surrounds the salvage site. The Golden Ray, carrying more than 1,400 vehicles, overturned after leaving the Port of Brunswick along the Georgia coast on Sept. 8, 2019. Harbor pilot Jonathan Tennant and about two dozen crew members on board were rescued and survived. The removal of Section 6...
