ATLANTA — For the second straight night, the Mets’ starting pitcher left the game after completing just two innings. Taijuan Walker got through his two innings on Tuesday without giving up a run, but when the Braves came up to bat in the bottom of the third, R.J. Alvarez came running in from the Mets’ bullpen. Walker had thrown 32 pitches, walking two Atlanta hitters and giving up one hit. The Mets announced later in Tuesday’s game that Walker left because of back spasms. While nothing appeared to be visibly wrong with Walker while he was on the mound, television cameras caught him wincing a bit after covering first base on what turned out to be his final play of the game. Carlos Carrasco left Monday’s game after two innings (including an extended rain delay) and landed on the 15-day IL on Tuesday with an oblique injury. The start on Tuesday was Walker’s 21st of the year, third on the team behind Chris Bassitt and Carrasco. With Carrasco landing on the injured list, and Walker now dealing with his own...
Michael Kopech made his case for another inning. The Chicago White Sox starter had not allowed a hit and struck out a career-high 11 through six stellar frames Friday against the Detroit Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field. He did not get his wish. The Sox turned to Reynaldo López for the seventh. “I thought I had a pretty decent chance, but they didn’t want that to happen,” Kopech said. “I’m at a point in the season where I’ve thrown a lot more innings than I did last year, so they want to rest me and make sure I’m healthy here for the next one.” The team’s no-hit bid ended when Javier Báez led off the seventh with a single to right-center. The Sox didn’t get the no-no but they did get a victory. Andrew Vaughn broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh, and the bullpen kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for a 2-0 win. “That’s as far as he should have gone,” manager Tony La Russa said of Kopech. “But if you think I’m...
It’s a rare sight to see Clay Holmes blow a save this season. It’s even rarer to see the sinker-baller get burned on a home run. Sunday was that weird day in the Bronx when the Yankees closer got burned on a Salvador Perez’s fly ball hammered to the deepest part of the Stadium. The Royals catcher’s three-run home run in the top of the ninth beat the Yankees 8-6. It was Holmes’ third blown save in his last nine appearances and the first home run he allowed this season. Hitters are rarely able to lift Holmes’ heavy sinker ball, he has a remarkable 4.5% flyball rate. Perez’s shot sailed 441 feet into Monument Park. In the bottom of the inning, DJ LeMahieu worked an eight-pitch at-bat for a one-out single to bring Aaron Judge to the plate as the tying run. Judge flew out to right field. Anthony Rizzo worked an eight-pitch, two-out walk to bring up Gleyber Torres, who flew out. That delivered the Yankees (69-33) their first loss in four games. It’s the second loss for the...
CHICAGO — The Mets could not have taken Game 1 of a doubleheader at Wrigley Field without J.D. Davis, who can pick it. In the bottom of the 10th inning of a tied game, Adam Ottavino had the pressure turned up when Frank Schwindel, the Cubs’ free runner at second, stole third. Ottavino, who was pitching a second straight inning, understood the assignment: a deep fly to the outfield would walk it off for the Cubs. With a killer instinct, he struck out his first two batters using nine pitches combined. “Once a guy is on third, you have to give it everything you got there,” said Ottavino, who leaned on his 12-year big-league experience to get through the 10th. Then came the kicker. Cubs second baseman Christopher Morel sent a grounder to Eduardo Escobar, who made a diving stop to his left and fired a long hop to Davis at first base. Davis, in just his fourth time playing first base this season, made a sensational pick while Morel was one step away from the bag to get the...
MIAMI (AP) — J.T. Realmuto had three hits against his former team, including a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning off All-Star Sandy Alcantara, and the Philadelphia Phillies snapped a four-game skid when they held on to beat the Miami Marlins 2-1 Friday night. Alcantara extended his shutout string to 25 innings before consecutive run-scoring doubles from Darick Hall and Realmuto gave the Phillies the lead. The right-hander went eight innings and struck out 12. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jose Miranda hit a game-ending, three-run homer against Milwaukee’s Josh Hader as the Minnesota Twins finally got a timely hit to beat the Brewers 4-1 on Wednesday. Miranda’s third hit of the game traveled to the second deck in left field. The 23-year-old rookie knew it was gone as he threw his bat and looked at the Minnesota dugout before the ball landed. The Twins have five walk-off wins this season. Hader (0-3) walked Jorge Polanco and allowed a single to Max Kepler before Miranda’s drive. Jhoan Duran (1-3) earned the first win of his career with one inning in relief, allowing one hit and a walk. Milwaukee had runners on first and second in the ninth inning, but Jace Peterson grounded into a 3-6-3 double play to end the threat. Peterson homered earlier for the Brewers’ lone run. Minnesota had plenty of chances to put the game away, but the Twins were 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base through the first nine innings. The Minnesota Twins walked off against Orioles closer Jorge López for a second straight day, with a game-tying home run from Jorge Polanco in the ninth inning and Jose Miranda’s walk-off single in the 10th handing Baltimore a 4-3 loss. The Orioles entered the series undefeated at 29-0 when entering the ninth inning with a lead, largely because of López’s dominance in that frame. He took the mound Friday riding a 15-outing scoreless streak and hadn’t surrendered a home run in 37 innings this season, but then allowed longballs to consecutive batters between Byron Buxton’s two-run walk-off Friday and Polanco’s solo shot Saturday. López’s second straight loss — and the fourth straight for the Orioles (35-44) — wasted a strong start from Jordan Lyles, who carried a shutout into the seventh. After Minnesota put two in scoring position against him with no outs in the third, Lyles began a run of 13 straight Twins retired, which ended on Nick Gordon’s home run on his 100th pitch with one out in the seventh. Dillon Tate finished that frame before putting runners...
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Rowdy Tellez hit a pair of two-run homers against his former team, leading the Milwaukee Brewers over the Toronto Blue Jays 10-3 Sunday. Milwaukee took two of three in the series between teams meeting for the first time since 2017. Tellez, traded from Toronto to the Brewers last July, homered in the first inning. He then connected in the second for his 13th home run. Milwaukee scored five times in the second. Tyrone Taylor led off with a double, Jace Peterson then reached on a perfectly executed drag bunt and Jonathan Davis had an infield single that brought in a run. After Christian Yelich had an RBI grounder, Tellez homered again off José Berríos (5-4), driving a pitch over the right-field wall. The drive gave the Brewers an 8-3 lead as a crowd of more than 35,000 stood and chanted Tellez’s name. Tellez has two multi-homer games this season and seven in his career. Jandel Gustave (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Chi Chi González to get the win. González and four Milwaukee relievers held...
OAKLAND – Frankie Montas was hoping to etch his name in the A’s record books Thursday, as he didn’t allow a hit through the first seven innings of the A’s game with the Seattle Mariners. The A’s are leading the Mariners 1-0 after seven innings. Using his trademark splitter and a dominant fastball that touched 99 mph, Montas, on a warm afternoon at the Coliseum, repeatedly burned through the Mariners lineup and had eight strikeouts and just two walks after seven complete. There have been 15 no-hitters in A’s franchise history before Thursday, including two others in the last five years. The last A’s no-hitters were by Sean Manaea on April 21, 2018, against the Boston Red Sox, and by Mike Fiers on May 7, 2019, against the Cincinnati Reds. Other A’s pitchers to no-hit opponents include Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, and Dave Stewart. Montas needed just 55 pitches to get through the first five innings, as he threw 39 strikes to help collect six strikeouts. Montas’ first blemish came on a walk to Tyler Trammell with two outs in...
PITTSBURGH — Alex Cobb on Sunday will make his first start for the Giants since May 18, just before he suffered a string of unfortunate injuries that sidelined him for three turns through the rotation. “It feels like it’s been a month,” Cobb said. Cobb was nearing a return from a lower back strain when he tweaked his neck during a side session, landing him on the 15-day injured list. He became the first Giants pitcher forced to miss at least 15 days since the MLB rule change took effect in May that extended the IL stint for pitchers from 10 to 15 days. The rule was intended to limit roster manipulation, something the Giants could be accused of with their I-80 shuttle between San Francisco and Triple-A Sacramento last season, but don’t consider Cobb a fan. “I honestly think it’s a stupid transition to go to that after what we’ve been through as a league for the last three years, dating back to 2020,” Cobb said. “We play 162 games in 180 days. If you’re gonna manipulate the roster...
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nine pitches, three strikeouts. Houston pitchers had two immaculate innings against the Texas Rangers. Houston starter Luis Garcia retired the side in the second inning when he struck out Nathaniel Lowe, Ezequiel Duran and Brad Miller on nine consecutive pitches. Those were among nine strikeouts for the right-hander in his six innings. When Phil Maton took over for Garcia on the mound to start the seventh inning, the reliever had his own immaculate inning — against the same three hitters. Maton struck out Lowe, Duran and Miller on nine pitches. Astros and Rangers officials said it was the first time in MLB history to have two nine-pitch, three-strikeout innings in the same game — either both by one team, or each team recording one. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Randy Arozarena had three hits and four RBIs against his original team to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-3 on Wednesday night. Arozarena, the 2021 AL Rookie of the Year, was a St. Louis prospect with 19 games of major league experience when he was obtained from the Cardinals in a January 2020 trade. He had an RBI double in the first inning and a two-run single in the seventh to pace an 18-hit outburst for the Rays. Veteran catcher Yadier Molina pitched a scoreless eighth for St. Louis, entering to cheers from red-clad Cardinals fans in a crowd of 12,906. He received a standing ovation when he struck out pinch-hitter Isaac Paredes. Vidal Bruján had three RBIs, and Ji-Man Choi and Harold Ramírez drove in two runs apiece for Tampa Bay. Corey Kluber (3-2) shut down the Cardinals for five innings before fading quickly in the sixth. St. Louis loaded the bases with no outs on a walk and two singles, including Paul Goldschmidt’s hit through the middle that...
DENVER — Taijuan Walker aced the tough assignment of pitching at Coors Field in his fifth-career start at the National League’s third-oldest ballpark. Walker lowered his season ERA to 2.70 and picked up his second win of the season in the Mets’ 2-0 victory over the Rockies on Sunday. He hurled seven shutout innings and limited Colorado batters to five hits and two walks. Walker also posted season highs in strikeouts (six) and pitches (97) in his sixth and best outing of the year thus far. It was only the second shutout from a Mets pitcher at Coors Field, ever. The Mets (28-15) improved to 11 series wins after beginning their six-game road trip by taking two out of three against the Rockies. The Mets have a 11-1-1 record in their 13 series so far this season. They packed their lockers and enjoyed a happy flight after the win, traveling to San Francisco to play a three-game set against the Giants that begins on Monday. In addition to his dominance on the mound, which at one point included 12 consecutive...
The Mets settled for a split, rendering yet another late-game rally moot, after a long day of baseball against the Cardinals. Joely Rodriguez stumbled in the top of the ninth inning of a tied game, putting men on first and third with one out. Brendan Donovan, representing the go-ahead run, reached third on a passed ball by Tomas Nido. Adam Ottavino relieved Rodriguez and did his job, striking out Nolan Arenado and inducing a check-swing groundout to Tyler O’Neill. But Eduardo Escobar’s throw to first base was a beat late, as Donovan crossed the plate and O’Neill was called safe. The Mets’ 4-3 loss to the Cardinals in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Tuesday night at Citi Field was a tough one, particularly because a series of events worked in the Amazin’s favor in the eighth inning. First, with one out, the Mets trailing by one run and Francisco Lindor at the plate, the Cardinals failed to catch a spiraling pop up near the third base line. Lindor wound up walking. Then, Escobar reached base on a strikeout after...
CHICAGO — The Yankees answered the challenge. After the White Sox tied it in the seventh, the Bombers rallied for seven runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth for a 15-7 blow out win at Guaranteed Rate Field on Thursday. The Yankees (23-8) have won four straight games and are 16-2 in their last 18 games. They scored a season-high 15 runs on a season-high 15 hits, despite striking out 14 times, and maintained the best record in baseball. After Joe Kelly walked the bases loaded with two outs in the eighth, Aaron Judge hit a grounder to shortstop and beat out the throw from Tim Anderson. That not only allowed Marwin Gonzalez a chance to score from third, but Gleyber Torres, who drew a walk as a pinch hitter, never let up and surprised the White Sox by not stopping at third and scoring from second. Giancarlo Stanton, who finished with a career-high six RBI, singled in two more and Josh Donaldson delivered the knockout with a three-run homer. That rally saved the night from a...
PHILADELPHIA — Max Scherzer’s unbeaten streak has been broken. Still, the Mets relied on solid pitching and polar bear-sized strength to flee Philly with another series win. Scherzer allowed three runs on 10 hits, striking out seven, across six innings in the Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Phillies in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park. The right-hander took his first loss since May 30, 2021, snapping his streak of 24 consecutive unbeaten starts. The three-time Cy Young winner and future Hall of Famer, obsessed with winning, saw the Mets lose Sunday on his start-day for the first time since he joined his new organization. “Heck of a run,” Scherzer said of his streak. “Obviously it takes your teammates to be able to do that, but it’s also kind of cool to be a part of it. You gotta go out there and give your team a chance to win. That’s your job as a starting pitcher. I feel like, over the past handful of starts here, I’ve been doing that.” The Amazin’s beat the Phillies,...
Another day, another rainout. The Orioles’ game Saturday night against the Kansas City Royals has been rained out, marking the second straight postponement for the weekend series at Camden Yards. Saturday’s rainout took advantage of a mutual day off for both teams, with the makeup scheduled for Monday at 12:05 p.m. Tickets for Saturday’s game will be valid for entry Monday. Friday’s series opener became a Sunday single-admission doubleheader, with the first game beginning at 1:35 p.m. and the second game following 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1. This year marks the return of nine-inning doubleheaders after they were seven innings the previous two seasons. The changes to the weekend schedule have altered the probable starters for the Orioles and Royals. Right-hander Jordan Lyles (2-2, 4.50 ERA) was listed as Friday’s probable starter, but he has now been bumped twice to Game 1 on Sunday. Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann (1-1, 2.59) will start Game 2, while right-hander Tyler Wells (0-2, 4.50 ERA) will start Monday’s series finale. Right-hander Carlos Hernández (0-1, 6.00 ERA) was in line to start Saturday...
PHILADELPHIA — The Mets, in the midst of a 14-game stretch against divisional teams, recorded something other than a series win for the first time this season when they split a four-game set against the Braves this week at Citi Field. We saw a little bit of everything from the 18-9 Amazin’s. They were outscored 18-12 by Atlanta, but they also continued their strong play in doubleheaders, dating back to last season, while a veteran starter showed more promise for the year ahead. Here are three things we learned about the Mets after their series split against the Braves. BULLPEN GETTING THINNER With Trevor May out until around the All-Star break with a stress reaction, the Mets bullpen is even thinner than it began the season and relievers will be asked to step up to weather the storm. Adam Ottavino became the first man tasked with that responsibility on Wednesday in the club’s 9-2 loss to Atlanta, and it wasn’t pretty. Ottavino, also the first Mets reliever to pitch on three consecutive days this season, entered with the bases loaded...
One day after five Mets pitchers silenced the Phillies offense, the division rivals woke up against the Amazin’s bullpen and showed just how deep their lineup can be. Adam Ottavino coughed up the Mets’ one-run lead when he gave up three earned runs on two hits, including a two-run home run to Kyle Schwarber, in the seventh inning of the Mets’ 4-1 loss to the Phillies on Saturday at Citi Field. Buck Showalter didn’t wait for Ottavino to complete the frame, as the skipper went to Sean Reid-Foley in relief. Reid-Foley induced a flyout for the final out of the seventh, but he opened the eighth by allowing a solo home run to Rhys Hoskins before exiting his outing with an apparent injury. Even though the Phillies did some late-game damage, the Mets had a few opportunities to crawl out of their three-run hole. But the Mets offense squandered those opportunities, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and leaving 13 men on base. The Amazin’s loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a pair of...
FLUSHING, Queens -- The Mets have thrown a combined no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.Megill went the first five innings. He struck out five and walked three while making his 23rd major league start.Drew Smith struck out four and walked one in 1 1/3 innings. He was relieved by Joely Rodríguez, who went one inning. Seth Lugo got the last two outs in the eighth.Mets center fielder Brandon Nimmo has made the most notable defensive plays. He had running catches to end the first and second innings and then slid to snare Jean Segura's sinking liner to finish the third. There hasn't been a no-hitter thrown in the majors this season.Megill was the fourth pitcher to be pulled after throwing at least five no-hit innings this year. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw was taken out after seven perfect innings, San Diego's Sean Manaea left after seven no-hit innings and Padres teammate Yu Darvish came out after six no-hit innings. In addition, six Tampa Bay Rays pitchers combined to carry a no-hitter into the 10th inning of a scoreless game against the Boston Red Sox...
Blue Jays RHP Alek Manoah, less than a year into his big-league career, has already blossomed into an elite pitcher and a potential Cy Young Award candidate There’s something special about Alek Manoah when he steps on a big-league mound. The confidence he could dominate an opposing lineup that belies his relative inexperience. The faith his Toronto Blue Jays teammates have that, when he’s starting, they have a better chance to win. He’s become so good, so young, arguably the ace of a pitching staff full of All-Stars and Cy Young candidates. In his first start, 10 days ago, Manoah walked into Yankee Stadium and shut out the Bronx Bombers on one hit over six innings. The Blue Jays won. They won again in his second start, against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday. And winning is something that Manoah does a lot of. The Blue Jays haven’t lost in his last 10 starts dating back to last Aug. 23, the fifth-longest unbeaten streak in franchise history. Max Scherzer is the only starting pitcher with a longer active streak. Since that...
PORTSMOUTH — For the second-straight outing in Ohio Valley Conference play, a Portsmouth Trojan allowed no hits from the mound. On Monday, Portsmouth senior Daewin Spence tossed a five-inning perfect game during their 14-0 win on Coal Grove. Two days later, junior Tyler Duncan did the same — facing one over the minimum in the Trojans’ 10-0 win over Chesapeake. Portsmouth scored in every inning — including a run in the sixth to secure the 10-run victory in six innings. A dropped third strike in the top of the fourth resulted in the Panthers’ lone base-runner of the evening. By game’s end, Duncan had fanned 12 ‘Peake hitters and issued no walks. Spence led Portsmouth with a team-high four hits and four RBI — as Portsmouth won their ninth-straight game and improve to 9-1 (5-0 OVC). *** BOX SCORE Chesapeake 0 0 0 0 0 0 — 0 0 3 Portsmouth 1 1 2 2 3 1 — 10 14 0 Portsmouth hitting Drew Roe 1-3, 2R, RBI, BB Tyler Duncan 3-4, 2R, 2RBI Daewin Spence 4-4, 4RBI Reade Pendleton...
PHILADELPHIA — The Mets were without their starting pitcher after just two innings against the Phillies, spelling disaster for the bullpen to cover the remaining seven frames. Despite David Peterson carrying the load, his strong effort in relief went from a turning point to a spoiled performance. Taijuan Walker exited his first start of the year after two perfect innings with what the Mets are calling right shoulder irritation. Then Peterson, who entered in the third, ate the middle innings and dominated the Phillies lineup. But it wasn’t enough. For the second-straight day, an ugly eighth inning and a late rally sealed a Mets loss. Once Trevor May became the second Mets pitcher on Monday night to leave his outing with a physical issue, the bullpen could not stop the bleeding. J.T. Realmuto cranked a two-run home run off left-hander Joely Rodriguez. Then Rhys Hoskins and Didi Gregorius collected back-to-back RBI doubles to complete a five-run rally and hand the Mets a 5-4 loss in the series opener at Citizens Bank Park. Peterson’s four scoreless innings were, at least, one...
It was only the second game of the season. But with innings to fill because of injuries to other members of the rotation, the Chicago White Sox needed a performance like the one Dylan Cease delivered Saturday. The right-hander allowed one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in five-plus innings as the Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 in front of 17,469 at Comerica Park. “All of us as starters take that pride and that chip on our shoulder to go out and eat as many innings as we can,” Cease said. “It’s good because (the Tigers) won in a good fashion (Friday), but I think we showed that we’re still here.” Cease threw 79 pitches and exited after allowing a single to Austin Meadows to begin the sixth inning. “You lose a game like (Friday, 5-4 on Javier Báez’s game-winning hit in the ninth), the momentum is always the starting pitcher, and he was just outstanding,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said of Cease. “They have a nice club over there and he was rock-solid....

BOSTON (CBS) — The Red Sox dispatched the New York Yankees in gratifying fashion in the AL Wild Card game on Tuesday night. Their reward? A showdown with the 100-win Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS. Tampa Bay was one of just three teams to hit the century mark in wins in 2021, and the only American League team to do so. The Rays are in the postseason for the third straight season, losing to the L.A. Dodgers in the World Series in 2020 and falling to the Astros in the ALDS in 2019 after winning the Wild Card game. The Rays hit the 2021 playoffs on a roll, winning seven of their last 10 games. The Red Sox are flying high after their 6-2 victory over the Yankees, but had to claw their way into the postseason over the final few weeks. That has mostly been forgiven following Tuesday night’s outcome. Now they have to give everything they’ve got — and likely a little bit more — if they want to defeat the Rays in a best-of-five series. This...
SAN FRANCISCO — The best Giants pitcher in the first half of the season gives way to the best Giants pitcher in the second half the season in search of win No. 107 and the N.L. West title. And if Logan Webb can pitch as well as Kevin Gausman did Saturday in a 3-2, 10-inning loss to the San Diego Padres, the Giants have to like their chances at opening the National League Division Series Friday at Oracle Park. Gausman was in command against the Padres from the outset, starting with a seven-pitch first inning and giving up one run on six hits through seven innings when his right hand began to cramp in part because of all the split-finger fastballs that left hitters flailing. It was Gausman’s second straight strong start, coming off a six-inning effort against Colorado in which he gave up three hits and one run with no walks and 11 strikeouts. He departed the game to the roar of a crowd of 40,760. “I feel like the ball is coming out really...
OAKLAND — Chris Bassitt doesn’t remember much about the last time he pitched in a game. A 100 mph line drive by Brian Goodwin exploded off Bassitt’s face, leaving the A’s All-Star right-hander in a crumpled heap on the mound in a road game against the Chicago White Sox. There were bloody towels, distraught teammates, and the last thing anyone was thinking about was Bassitt pitching again in 2021. Miraculously, Bassitt will take the mound again Thursday when the A’s finish a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners. A’s manager Bob Melvin gave Bassitt the word Tuesday that the decks had been cleared for his return. Bassitt knows what you’re thinking, and he’ll have none of it. “I know I’m kind of a messed up thinker, a messed up individual a little bit, but I knew I wasn’t going to be worried about facing hitters,” Bassitt said. “If it happens again, it happens again. I don’t think about it too much, honestly. It’s part of the game. Unfortunately, something happened to me, but it is what...
DENVER (AP) — The San Francisco Giants got to Denver late and woke up early. They had just played an intense series against a longtime rival, so a letdown in Colorado would have been excusable. With the division lead on the line, they had plenty of energy. Thairo Estrada hit two of San Francisco’s four home runs, Kevin Gausman pitched seven solid innings and the Giants beat the Rockies 10-5 on Monday to maintain their one-game advantage in the NL West. “This group came ready to play today. Late flight last night, get in at 1:30 in the morning,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “The whole crew has a very, very quick turnaround and tired eyes this morning. These guys got ramped up well, got prepared and ready to hit, obviously, from the first pitch.” The major league-best Giants (88-50) took two of three from the rival Dodgers over the weekend to regain sole possession of first place. Los Angeles won 5-1 in St. Louis on Monday. Sunday’s game finished around 8:30 p.m. Colorado time and Monday’s first pitch was 2:10...
SAN FRANCISCO — With first place in the National League West on the line Sunday at Oracle Park, the Dodgers will hand the ball to Cy Young favorite, Walker Buehler. The Giants will counter with reliever Dominic Leone, who has pitched in 283 major league games but never as a starter. How did it come to this? Why are the Giants asking one of their set-up men to throw the first inning of a pivotal game against their rivals? And why are the Giants using Leone as an “opener” the day after right-hander Jay Jackson gave up three earned runs in 1/3 of an inning in the same role? The short answer is that veteran Johnny Cueto, who was lined up to pitch Sunday, landed on the 10-day injured list earlier this week with a right elbow strain. Another starter expected to face the Dodgers this weekend, lefty Alex Wood, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday and is still symptomatic. To understand how the Giants ended up with back-to-back bullpen games in a key...
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The chants of “MVP! MVP!” rose up from the sellout crowd as Max Muncy approached the plate. He had to stifle a smile at the noise. Muncy slugged two homers and drove in five runs to highlight a power performance by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 9-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night. READ MORE: More Than 2,000 People Sign Petition Asking Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh To Keep Masks Optional Muncy received two MVP votes in 2019. He figures to rate much higher in the voting this season, with the left-handed slugger generating consistent offense while Cody Bellinger struggles and Mookie Betts is sidelined. “That’s probably one of the cooler moments I’ve ever had in my career,” Muncy said about the chants. “But the most important thing is winning and getting this team back in the World Series. Whatever I can do to help the team win, that’s what I’m going to do.” Muncy has five homers in his last three games, and 28 on the season. “There’s no ebbs and flows, he’s...
The Oakland A’s and Chicago White Sox met on the South Side with identical records and in entirely different situations. The White Sox are cruising with a 10 game lead in first place in the AL Central. The Oakland A’s have a handful of teams vying for a postseason spot they hope to hold. But the White Sox prevailed, beating the A’s 5-2 on Monday night. Frankie Montas looked sharp, particularly with his splitter. In his five inning outing, Montas threw the splitter 29 ties and generated 10 swings and misses. Four of his six strikeouts came on the splitter, which all fell out of the strikeout and gave catcher Yan Gomes a workout. The White Sox chipped away to erase an early A’s 2-0 lead, tacking eight singles and putting the leadoff batter on base in four of the five innings to churn out three runs against him. Chicago scored on a Cesar Hernandez sacrifice fly, Seby Zavala two-out single, an Eloy Jimenez rocket that bounced in and out of Matt Chapman’s glove at third base....
PHOENIX — It’s the first week of August, the Giants lead the National League West and Madison Bumgarner just turned in a quality start against another first-place club. That sentence was as true on August 7, 2016 when Bumgarner faced the Washington Nationals as it is on Tuesday, but this time around, the southpaw was shutting the Giants down instead of lifting them up. Nearly five years after Bumgarner was last making a postseason push, he led a last-place Diamondbacks team to a 3-1 victory over his old club with seven innings of one-run ball. Matched up against his former teammate and fellow 2016 Giants ace, Johnny Cueto, Bumgarner looked like a pitcher primed to succeed deep into his 30s against a San Francisco offense that entered the day leading the majors in home runs. Tuesday marked Bumgarner’s second start against the Giants since he signed a five-year, $85 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to the 2020 season, but his performance was significantly improved from a four-inning stint at Oracle Park in San Francisco...

Edwin Jackson, a 37-year-old released by five big league teams, was the last. Former big league outfielder Hyun Soo Kim hit a two-run homer off Pittsburgh front office assistant Jeremy Bleich and scored the game-ending run in South Korea's 11-1 victory over Israel on Monday at the Olympics. Soo, who played for Baltimore and Philadelphia in 2016, homered against Bleich to cap a seven-run fifth inning. Bleich retired in 2019 and prepares advance scouting reports for the Pirates. Soo hit his second double of the game with two outs in the seventh off 42-year-old right-hander Shlomo Lipetz, who will return to his day job at New York's City Winery after the Olympics. Soo scored on Hye-seong Kim's single, making this the first game of the tournament cut short under an Olympic rout rule. HOUSTON (AP) — Framber Valdez of the Houston Astros is pitching a no-hitter through six innings against the Texas Rangers. Valdez struggled with command on Saturday night and tied a career high by walking six batters. Four of his six walks came in the first two innings. He settled down after the second and has retired 12 of his last 14 batters. He has thrown 99 pitches. The 27-year-old left-hander was making his 11th start of the season after missing almost two months after fracturing his left index finger in spring training. Valdez has struck out four and retired the rest on groundballs. The Rangers, who have lost a season-high 10 straight, have not hit a ball in the air through six innings. Valdez has appeared in 56 games with 34 starts in his career. He began the day with a 3.26 ERA and a 5-2 record this season. Jose Trevino hit a sharp ground ball with one out in the fifth that looked like it might get by shortstop Carlos Correa, but he spun to grab it....
Stars turning 30 in 2021 Luxurious places to retire across America The Mets won Monday night in Cincinnati, but that statement alone does no justice for how entertaining their games have been lately, both in favor of and against them.  © Provided by CBS Sports On Friday night, there was a benches-clearing incident.  On Saturday, they blew a six-run lead by allowing nine runs in the final two innings, including a walk-off grand slam.  On Sunday, they gave up six runs in the first inning to the Pirates -- including a pretty embarrassing mishap -- but still came back and won that game.  That brings us to Monday, which finished with a 15-11 Mets win over the Reds in 11 innings. Things started out swimmingly for the Mets. Brandon Nimmo singled and then Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil went for back-to-back homers. That 3-0 lead was fleeting, however. In a frame that included a booted double play and hit batsman, the Mets coughed up four runs to the Reds.  Another Reds batter was hit by a pitch in the...
A Giants team that’s missing several of its best hitters due to injury flexed its depth and used a pair of sweet swings from Mike Yastrzemski to trounce the Cardinals on Friday, but in the club’s second game back after the All-Star break, a lineup loaded with fill-ins was no match for St. Louis’ pitching staff. Cardinals southpaw Kwang Hyun Kim and a quartet of relievers limited a Giants offense that was missing four of its top eight home run hitters to one run in a 3-1 defeat for Gabe Kapler’s club on Saturday at Busch Stadium. With Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria all on the injured list, a depleted Giants team played Saturday’s game without shortstop Brandon Crawford until he appeared as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning against closer Alex Reyes. Crawford, who exited the series opener in the eighth inning with a left hamstring cramp, drew a four-pitch walk, but was immediately replaced at first base by backup catcher Chadwick Tromp. Kim entered the outing as one of three pitchers to throw...
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – Jesús Aguilar homered and drove in four runs, Starling Marte went deep with three RBIs, and the Miami Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-0 on Friday night to split a doubleheader. Jordan Holloway (2-2), recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday as the 27th man, didn’t allow a hit in five innings of relief after Ross Detwiler opened with a scoreless first. Holloway stuck out six and walked two. Richard Bleier completed the two-hitter with a scoreless seventh. Eflin then walked Garrett Cooper, ending his night. Aguilar followed with a three-run homer to deep left off Enyel De Los Sanos to make it 7-0. Eflin gave up...
Yankees: Gio Urshela injury update after going down against Kansas City Alexander Wilson June 23, 2021 Share on facebook Facebook Share on twitter Twitter Share on reddit Reddit With the New York Yankees returning Luke Voit on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals, they finally gained back a significant portion of their offense and a player who led the MLB in 2020 with 22 homers. However, Voit was pulled after a few innings of work as skipper Aaron Boone tried to mitigate any further setbacks. However, with the Yankees desperately trying to extract a win against the Royals, they ended up blowing it in the eighth inning, as Kansas City rallied, scoring three runs due to a poor outing from Jonathan Loaisiga. He gave up five hits and four earned runs over 0.2 innings after a solid performance from Gerrit Cole, where he lasted 7.0 innings and allowed three hits and two runs. In the defeat, starting third baseman Gio Urshela was hit by a pitch in the right shin, and while he stayed...
BOSTON (CBS) — Tuesday night at the Trop was a wild one for the Red Sox, especially for Rafael Devers. After making two costly mistakes against the Rays, the third baseman became one of the heroes for Boston’s extra innings win. We’ll start with the miscues, because people like happy endings to stories. Devers’ first boo-boo came against the Rays’ first batter of the game, when he couldn’t handle Yandy Diaz’ grounder to start the bottom of the first. It was Devers’ 12th error of the season, and a Xander Bogaerts miscue a few batters later allowed Tampa to plate a pair of runs. It was not an ideal start for a team with a rather shaky defense as of late. READ MORE: Chris Sale Set To Face Hitters At Fenway Park On Saturday Devers’ next slip-up came on the base paths in the top of the eighth with the score tied 5-5. After clubbing a one-out double and representing the potential go-ahead run at second for Boston, Devers was cut down on the base paths trying to make it...

After using late-inning rallies to sweep a series from the Jays during the week, the Yankees returned home Friday and ran out of magic. They came back from an early deficit but couldn’t do it again later in the game, falling to the A’s 5-3 in The Bronx. In the first game at a full-capacity Yankee Stadium since 2019, the season-high crowd of 24,037 — the bleachers were packed but plenty of seats remained open elsewhere — tried to will the Yankees (36-33) to one more comeback in the final innings. But the AL West-leading A’s (44-27) protected the lead they got in the sixth inning, when Tony Kemp roped a three-run homer off Wandy Peralta, to snap the Yankees’ three-game winning streak.
