(CNN)Sharks have scared us a lot this summer, primarily for suspected attacks on humans. However, humans are a larger threat to sharks than sharks are to us. The 34th official Shark Week takes place from July 24 to July 30 on the Discovery Channel and aims to increase conversation and education about these ancient marine predators that are key to the health of the ocean. Six people have been indicted in four separate cryptocurrency fraud cases involving more than $130 million in losses, including the single largest NFT scheme charged to date, federal prosecutors said this week. Fossils of early human ancestors in the so-called 'Cradle of Humankind' in South Africa may be more than a million years older than previously thought, according to a new study. The Sterkfontein Caves in Johannesburg contain more than a third of the world's early hominid fossils – crucial links in the evolutionary chain to modern humans. Sterkfontein was made famous by the discovery of the first adult Australopithecus, an ancient hominin, by Robert Broom in 1936.  It had previously been theorised that the Australopithecus-bearing cave sediments were between 2 million and 2.5 million years old. However, new analysis has revealed that the sediments date from about 3.4 to 3.7 million years old, placing these fossils toward the beginning of the Australopithecus era, rather than near the end.  This would make them older than the world’s most famous Australopithecus fossil called Lucy, also known as Dinkinesh, which is 3.2 million years old. A former Amazon software engineer who allegedly stole personal data of more than 100 million credit card customers claims she was trying to expose vulnerabilities in Capital One's online system. Paige Thompson, 36, of Seattle, is accused of hacking into Capital One's stored data and downloading private information, including bank account and social security numbers, from customers' credit card applications. She allegedly violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, an anti-hacking law that forbids access to a computer without authorization, the criminal complaint states. However, her attorneys argue her actions were that of a 'novice white-hat hacker' trying who was scanning the online interface for vulnerabilities and exploring what she exposed.  Critics of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act allege the 'loose' law allows for protections for hackers who find vulnerabilities in online systems. Thompson, whose federal trial began in Washington state on Tuesday, faces 10 counts of computer fraud, wire fraud and identity theft. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges and, if convicted, could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. Advocates pushing to raise California's minimum wage to $18 an hour heralded a key development Thursday as they began submitting more than one million signatures to get the Living Wage Act on the November ballot, easily surpassing the roughly 623,000 required. "California Voters have been clear: people working full time should be able to afford life's basic needs," said anti-poverty activist Joe Sanberg, who filed the ballot initiative, in a statement. The state's current minimum wage for employers, $15 an hour, was implemented just this year, though the wage drops to $14 an hour for companies with fewer than 26 employees. Sanberg says the wage floor is clearly insufficient. "Californians simply cannot afford to support a family on the current minimum wage—which amounts to just $32,000 a year for someone working full-time," he said. "Raising the minimum wage in the Golden State is a moral imperative." If the Living Wage Act passes in November, it would increase the minimum wage incrementally, boosting it $1 per year until reaching $18 on January 1, 2025 for employers with 26 or more workers....

The logo of cryptocurrency platform Solana.Jakub Porzycki | NurPhoto via | Getty Images One of the most popular bridges linking the ethereum and solana blockchains lost more than $320 million Wednesday afternoon in an apparent hack. It is DeFi's second-biggest exploit ever, just after the $600 million Poly Network crypto heist, and it is the largest attack to date on solana, a rival to ethereum that is increasingly gaining traction in the non-fungible token (NFT) and decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems. Ethereum is the most used blockchain network, and it is a big player in the world of DeFi, in which programmable pieces of code known as smart contracts can replace middlemen like banks and lawyers in certain types of business transactions. A more recently introduced competitor, solana, is growing in popularity, because it is cheaper and faster to use than ethereum. The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits plunged last week to the lowest level in 52 years, more evidence that the U.S. job market is recovering from last year’s coronavirus recession. Unemployment claims dropped by 43,000 to 184,000 last week, the lowest since September 1969, the Labor Department said Thursday. The four-week moving average, which smooths out week-to-week volatility, fell to below 219,000, lowest since the pandemic hit the United States hard in March 2020. Overall, just under two million Americans were collecting traditional unemployment benefits the week that ended November 27. Weekly claims, which are a proxy for layoffs, have fallen steadily most of the year since topping 900,000 one week in early January.  The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits plunged last week to the lowest level in 52 years, more evidence that the U.S. job market is recovering from last year’s coronavirus recession They are now below to the 220,000-a-week level typical before the coronavirus pandemic slammed the U.S. economy in March 2020; COVID-19 forced consumers to stay home as health precaution and businesses to...

New York City has cut ties with one of the biggest homeless shelter operators in the city after it was revealed that the CEO collected more than $1million a year in salary while steering millions of dollars in business to other for-profit companies he headed.    Jack A Brown III, the Chief Executive Officer of CORE Services Group, received more than $352million in city funding to operate 15 homeless shelters and hotels around New York. However, a blockbuster investigation found that the 53-year-old Brown hired his unqualified relatives, redirected millions of dollars from his non-profit business towards his for-profit companies and collected a seven-figure salary, The New York Times reported.  Lame-duck Mayor Bill de Blasio, who had made fixing the city's homeless crisis one of his top priorities during his eight years in office, immediately cut ties with CORE. State finance officials confirmed that Brown, the highest-paid shelter operator in New York, showed 'a disturbing pattern of ethical violations'.    New York City has cut ties with CORE's CEO Jack A Brown III (pictured), 53, after it was revealed that he redirected six-figure funds from...
In a new interview, Jennifer Lawrence delights in the fact that she’s enough of a movie powerhouse to get top-billing for her new film, “Don’t Look Up,” but not top pay. According to Vanity Fair, Lawrence’s confirmation that she was “No. 1 on the call sheet” appears to provide an “inspiring” tale about a woman in Hollywood “owning her own worth” and asserting her power and influence. But not so fast. In the interview, Lawrence also is asked about a report that she was paid $25 million to star in Adam McKay’s upcoming end-of-the-world comedy, while co-star Leonardo DiCaprio was paid $30 million. Jennifer Lawrence says Leonardo DiCaprio "was very gracious" about letting her be "number one on the call sheet," but he still made $5 million more than her: "Look, Leo brings in more box office than I do. I’m extremely fortunate and happy with my deal." https://t.co/3Oc1aPnxUt pic.twitter.com/MeyHFI5GD6 — IndieWire (@IndieWire) November 22, 2021 Lawrence’s response is illuminating, in that it shows that an Oscar-winning, female star of her caliber still has to accept being paid less...
Federal officials are screening millions of passengers per day, marking an increase in holiday travel compared to last year at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lisa Farbstein, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration, said Tuesday that 2,010,601 people were screened at airport security checkpoints on Monday throughout the United States. "It's the sixth day so far this month that checkpoint volume has exceeded 2 million," Farbstein wrote on Twitter. "Please remember to wear your mask!" AIRLINES BLAME BOOZE, NOT ABOMINABLE CONDITIONS, FOR SOARING IN-FLIGHT FIGHTS On Sunday, the TSA screened 2,150,150 travelers, the highest day this month of recorded travelers, according to its website. Both days saw a million more travelers than on the comparable dates in 2020, with 978,297 people screened on Nov. 14, 2020, and 883,157 on Nov. 15, 2020. Earlier this month, the American Automobile Association predicted Thanksgiving travel would come close to reaching pre-pandemic levels. President Biden offered CNN a lifeline as the struggling network was desperate for a ratings boost after going nearly a month without any program averaging 1 million viewers.  Biden rewarded CNN with a third primetime town hall with Anderson Cooper returning for the second time as the moderator. The president was welcomed by the audience in the heavily liberal Baltimore where the majority of questions were asked by Democrat participants.  AMERICAN IGNORE CNN'S ‘SOFTBALL’ BIDEN TOWN HALL, TURNS TO REGULAR PROGRAMMING ON FOX NEWS, MSNBC INSTEAD Despite all the built-up hype, CNN still came in third place, averaging only 1.2 million viewers from the 8-9:30 p.m. ET timeframe behind Fox News' 2.8 million and MSNBC's 1.4 million averages.  Perhaps the silver lining for CNN is that the town hall offered a night of seven-digit viewership, which has become a rarity for the diminished network.  CNN’s heavily publicized town hall with President Biden failed to resonate with viewers. Young men who receive the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine are at higher risk of developing a rare case of heart inflammation than those who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, researchers revealed on Thursday.   Researchers revealed the data at a meeting of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) advisory committee to discuss approval of booster doses for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson shot. A CDC official presented data that showed young men under the age of 30 who receive the Moderna vaccine have experienced a slight uptick in myocarditis and pericarditis cases. This is the first data that show an increased risk in one of the vaccines when compared to the other.  However, officials stand by the safety of the vaccine, and still recommend it for use as the benefits heavily outweigh the potential risks.  Health officials in Nordic countries have made a different choice, though, with Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden all restricting use of the Moderna jab among young people. People aged 18 to 29 who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (left) were less likely to develop myocarditis than...
More than 10 million Americans have received boosters shots since they became available in the U.S. this August, new data reveal. These include about 6.7 million seniors, comprising almost 15 percent of Americans over age 65. Booster shots are driving up vaccination numbers in the U.S., as the number of Americans getting their third doses comprises between one-third and one-half of shots given in the country each day.  However, limited demographic data are available on who's getting booster shots, making it difficult to evaluate the rollout from state to state or across different race and ethnicity groups. Since booster shots became available in the U.S. in August, over 10 million Americans have received the shots. (CNN)This week, US health officials announced plans to offer booster Covid-19 shots to all qualifying adults starting on September 20. If the FDA authorizes them and the CDC recommends them, the shots will be available eight months after a person received their second dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. The good news is that most qualifying adults will likely take the booster in yet another sign that Americans are, in large part, pro-vaccination when it comes to the coronavirus. Take an Axios/Ipsos poll completed earlier this month. The pollster asked adults who had received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine whether they would get a booster under five different scenarios, ranging from public health administrators recommending it to a rise in cases in the U.S. Under all different circumstances, at least 87% of respondents said they were likely to get one. At most, 12% said they were unlikely to get one. A clear majority (59% or greater, depending on how the question was phrased) indicated that they were very likely to receive a booster. More than one million acres have already burned in California as of August 14, Cal Fire reports. California’s scorched earth totals nearly one quarter of all the acres of land that have burned nationally this year, about 3.9 million acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. The Dixie Fire, the largest fire this year, has burned 540,581 acres in northern California. As of Saturday, it was only 30% contained. The Dixie Fire is the largest single wildfire in state history and the second-largest wildfire ever in California, Cal Fire reports. The largest fire occurred last year after a series of fires merged into one fire categorized as a gigafire, one that burns more than one million acres. Called the August Complex, more than one million acres burned in the Mendocino, Six Rivers and Shasta-Trinity national forests. The August Complex, a compilation of more than 30 fires, was reportedly ignited by lightning and to date was the largest wildfire in California history. Last year was a record one for wildfires in California. In 2020 alone, the SCU Lightning Complex in...
Andrew Brookes | Cultura | Getty Images More than $600 million has been stolen in what's likely to be one of the biggest cryptocurrency thefts ever. Hackers exploited a vulnerability in Poly Network, a platform that looks to connect different blockchains so that they can work together. Poly Network disclosed the attack on Twitter and asked to establish communication with the hackers, and urged them to "return the hacked assets." A blockchain is a ledger of activities upon which various cryptocurrencies are based. Each digital coin has its own blockchain and they're different to each other. Poly Network claims to be able to make these various blockchains work with each other. Poly Network is a decentralized finance platform. DeFi is a broad term encompassing financial applications based on blockchain technology that looks to cut out intermediaries — such as brokerages and exchanges. Hence, it's dubbed decentralized. Proponents say this can make financial applications such as lending or borrowing more efficient and cheaper. "The amount of money you hacked is the biggest in defi history," Poly Network said in another tweet....
The U.S. vaccination rollout has picked up the pace with the country now averaging more than 700,000 vaccinations a day - the highest rate in over a month. The daily average for Americans getting their first doses is more 500,000, the highest in over two months, according to the White House COVID-19 data director. More than 195 million Americans have now received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine, representing just over half of the population. Many of the states with high vaccination rates are also those currently facing a COVID surge. In Louisiana, for example, vaccination rates have tripled in the past three weeks. But it will take months to make up for vaccination deficits if the U.S. continues administering shots at its current pace. The U.S.'s daily vaccination rate is now the highest in over a month.
