NBC’s sports broadcast model has undergone significant change over the last several months, and more could be coming soon as the network aims to modernize its offerings. NBCUniversal will soon unveil a direct-to-consumer option for its regional sports networks, the company said Monday in announcing Valari Dobson Staab as the first chairperson of NBC Local, a new division encompassing the regional sports networks, as well as NBC and Telemundo owned-and-operated stations. The tidbit was first noticed by The Hollywood Reporter’s Alex Weprin. Attempts to reach an NBC Sports regional spokesperson were not returned Monday afternoon. The Warriors, Sharks, A’s, Giants, Earthquakes and Sacramento Kings all play on NBC regional networks in Northern California — NBC Sports Bay Area or NBC Sports California. Many other NBA, NHL and MLB teams also air their games on the regional NBC channels. There’s no indication that Bay Area fans would be blacked out from games like Dodgers fans in Los Angeles were for years, or like Nuggets and Avalanche fans in Denver are now. It seems unlikely the regional sports...

SANTA CLARA — Joe Staley wasn’t sure where to go after 49ers practice Thursday. The locker room he called home for 13 years is now off-limits to him. That’s because Staley has become a media member, and only team-employed media are allowed in the locker room because of the NFL’s COVID protocol. So, sure enough, Staley joined the press conference. He officially debuted in his NBC Sports Bay Area role by launching the first question to George Kittle. Staley tried to tap into his notorious good humor by asking Kittle a rambling question — complete with their Canadian-acent bit from past seasons — before eventually asking why Kittle considered him a favorite teammate. Kittle’s responded that Staley taught him to “ignore the media” and outside noise. And then, silence. Their comedy routine flatlined. Kittle begged for other questions from other reporters, one of which led back to Staley’s presence. “I just want to hug him,” Kittle said. “I don’t know if I can answer questions. I’ll answer them into his ear.” Kittle and...

How’s this for a sports fan’s nightmare: Imagine being told that in a month you’ll no longer be able to watch Giants, Warriors, A’s or Sharks games on your television or devices. For DISH Network and Sling TV viewers, no imagination is needed — their reality is the plug will be pulled on almost all of those games April 1. Because of a breakdown in negotiations between those services and NBC Sports Regional Networks, subscribers of DISH and Sling TV were notified Tuesday that NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Sports California won’t be available to them. Coincidentally, the DISH and Sling TV black out begins on Opening Night for both the Giants and A’s. A spokesperson for Sling TV released a statement saying the company could no longer justify carrying the Regional Sports Networks on its platforms because of the rising carriage fees NBC now requires. “The Regional Sports Network (RSN) model is fundamentally broken. At DISH TV and Sling TV, we love sports and we love sports fans, but we have to think...
It seems like every day there’s a new story of another seemingly racially motivated and unquestionably senseless attack on Asian-Americans. Whether it be in Oakland’s Chinatown, a Sam’s Club in Texas, or outside a bakery in New York City, the uptick in these kinds of hate crimes is the worst kind of online phenomenon. Santa Cruz Warriors guard Jeremy Lin — a Palo Alto native and one of the most prominent Asian-Americans in professional sports — talked about the troubling events on a recent episode of NBC Sports Bay Area’s Race In America: A Candid Conversation. Your browser does not support iframes. “I feel bad for somebody who harbors hate for somebody else, who they’ve never met, just based on skin color,” Lin told NBC Sports Bay Area from the G-League bubble in central Florida. “That makes me want to do something. It makes me want to educate people or speak out and find ways to make a difference.” “Honestly, it goes almost from anger to heartbreak. Almost like a sadness, but mixed with compassion. I...
The announcement Friday that NBC Sports Network plans to shut down at the end of the year raised questions about the network’s regional cable sports channels. More specifically in this market, the ones in the Bay Area. What happens to live broadcasts of Giants, A’s, Warriors and Sharks games, among other things, on the local NBC cable channels? Turns out, nothing. “NBC Sports Bay Area/California and the NBC Sports Regional Networks will not be impacted by the NBCSN scenario,” Jeff Nuich, an NBC Sports Regional Networks spokesman, said in an email to the Bay Area News Group. In a memo Friday, NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua announced that NBCSN will completely shut down by the end of 2021 and that Stanley Cup playoff games and NASCAR races would be moving to USA Network this year, the Associated Press reported. “This will make USA Network an extraordinarily powerful platform in the media marketplace, and gives our sports programming a significant audience boost,” Bevacqua said. “We believe that the power of this offering is the best...

The coronavirus pandemic continues to have a devastating impact on many U.S. business, including the sports media industry. On Monday, layoff notices were handed out at NBC Sports Bay Area, where on-air anchor Kelli Johnson was among those let go. Johnson, a familiar face to local sports viewers, confirmed the news Tuesday with a post on her Twitter page. “I have been told that my contract will not be renewed,” wrote Johnson, who has spent 18 years with NBC Sports, including stops in Washington, D.C., Houston and San Francisco. “I was not alone in getting let go yesterday, so many talented friends & people also lost their jobs. But I have to admit I had a great run and am so grateful for the amazing friends I met along the way.” Some tough news to share… #2020GoAway pic.twitter.com/lzV3TVNqhd — Kelli Johnson (@KJohnsonNBCS) August 4, 2020 (More to come)
