Scattered storms could bring torrential downpours and gusty winds to the D.C. region during the Wednesday afternoon and evening commute. Forecasters expect clusters of thunderstorms to develop over the Blue Ridge Mountains and move east, most likely affecting the immediate D.C. and Baltimore suburbs between 5 p.m. and midnight. While Wednesday’s severe threat is low, any storms that develop will bring a risk of flooding, frequent lightning and strong gusts in vulnerable areas. “Thunderstorms will continue tonight, and these storms may produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall,” Storm Team4 Meteorologist Mike Stinneford said. “Storms will taper off after midnight, and the weather will start to improve on Thursday as a cold front sags off to the south.” Listen to WTOP online and on the radio at 103.5 FM or 107.7 FM. MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (WCCO) — It doesn’t take much to create dangerous driving conditions. Wet weather and cooler temperatures can cause chaos. Add in rush hour traffic, and you get what happened Thursday morning on Interstate 94 in Maplewood. MnDOT traffic cameras captured more than a dozen vehicles spinning and crashing into guard rails and each other. The reason? A re-freeze on metro roads. “Anytime we have temps around 32 degrees and a little precipitation or moisture, those bridge decks will freeze up right away and cause for some slippery conditions,” said Sgt. Troy Christianson with the Minnesota State Patrol. (credit: MnDOT) Losing control on the road is unnerving, but the state patrol says what you do next could save your life. If you’re in a crash, pull over onto the shoulder or an exit ramp — and do not get out of your vehicle. “We see it quite often where you get out of your vehicle and people are actually struck by the other cars that lose control. As most people head back to work Tuesday after the MLK holiday, low overnight temperatures throughout the D.C. region will refreeze wet spots created from Sunday’s storm, creating icy and slick conditions for the morning commute. Parts of the region experienced overnight temperatures as low as the teens, with wind chills nearly 10 degrees. The cause? The area of low pressure that brought Sunday’s winter storm of snow, sleet and freezing rain. In addition, cold air funneling back into the region from the Great Lakes guided in a deep freeze that will prolong travel headaches on Tuesday. “Any standing water, puddles...

The Virginia Department of Transportation is warning drivers to remain cautious on roadways, as refreezes make roads treacherous and the possibility of more winter weather approaches the commonwealth. WEATHER RESOURCES: WCCO Weather App | School Closings | Live Radar MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Ahead of a weekend of inclement weather in Minnesota, traffic safety experts urge prepping your car for wintery conditions and driving at slower speeds. Lisa Kons, manager of the traffic safety program at the Minnesota Safety Council said the number one safety hazard during snow, sleet or rain is speed. “We need to drive for conditions so now that speed limit is a suggestion. Retail sales for Black Friday reflected the worldwide trend in everything from how people eat and work to how they go to school or buy toilet paper: a massive shift to online. The Associated Press reported Saturday that Black Friday saw a new record for online sales on the annual shopping bonanza, reaching an approximate $9 billion, a 22% increase over the previous record set in 2019. It is still a lower watermark than 2019’s Cyber Monday, which set and holds the record for single largest shopping day in U.S. history. At least, for now. Cyber Monday 2020 could still top that.
