The woman who narrowly escaped death after Anne Heche's car plowed into her house igniting a fire that destroyed her home and belongings gave a heartfelt message to the late actress' family and friends.  Despite her own losses, Lynne Mishele expressed her sorrow on her Instagram page a few hours after it was confirmed that Heche had been taken off life support due to brain injury caused by smoke inhalation. 'The news of Anne Heche passing is devastating. Her family and her friends and her children especially really have suffered a great loss and my heart goes out for them,' she said. 'This entire situation is tragic and there really are just no words. I am sending love to everyone involved.' The previous day, Mishele thanked her supporters in a video posted on the GoFundMe page that was created on her behalf by neighbors and the owners of the house. ‘Hi everyone, it's Lynne Mishele still recovering and trying to figure out up from down, but I did want to send a huge, huge thank you to everybody from all...
Gabby Petito's family on Monday notified Utah officials of plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit alleging that police failed to recognize their daughter was in a life-threatening situation last year when officers investigated a fight between her and her boyfriend.  The fight happened weeks before authorities say the boyfriend killed her while the couple was on a cross-country van trip. The notice of claim contends police in the tourist town of Moab missed signs that Petito was the victim of domestic violence at the hands of Brian Laundrie on Aug. 12, 2021. The officers ultimately allowed the couple to leave after requiring them to spend a night apart. Police body camera video from that day showing Petito, 22, visibly upset was widely viewed as the investigation unfolded and raised questions about whether a different police response could have prevented her death. 'If the officers had been properly trained and followed the law, Gabby would still be alive today,' said attorney James McConkie in a statement announcing the filing of the notice of claim. Notices of claims are required before...

A captured Russian soldier has claimed that Putin's military forces have a special squad set up for killing deserters who don't want to take part in the invasion of Ukraine. The 22-year-old man said soldiers are threatened with a specialised 'echelon', and that they are kept in the dark until they see the devastation for themselves - at which point the 'only thing we could really do was surrender'. In a filmed questioning by the Ukrainian Security Service, the POW also said his phone was taken away, so he couldn't read the news on the situation. He said: 'As we came in we realised the situation, that we're not going into a peacekeeping mission, but to fight. 'There were questions to commanders, sort of like "why the hell are we doing this", but to turn back and leave? We won't make it home.  'Echelons in the back, they kill deserters...it seems, with people I've spoken to, we're all military, they told them the same thing. 'There really is a squad that kills people who try to run home.' Adding that he...

On top of the lawsuit, the city’s district attorney said he expects “developments” in the case to happen this week. But the DA stopped short of saying whether or not charges would be filed against any of the officers, who have not been officially identified. I know you would all like me to be able to say more.” What we do know is Siderio’s father, who’s serving time in prison on an unrelated charge, is now...

Pete Hegseth blamed Daunte Wright for his own death during a segment that focused on anti-police protests that have taken place since the tragic death occurred last weekend. He also blamed the officer who shot Wright in what has been described as an “accident” by Brooklyn Center police. Fox & Friends covered the protests on Thursday along with the news that Kim Potter, the officer who fatally shot Wright, was charged with second-degree manslaughter after her resignation from the police. Brian Kilmeade remarked that it was “pretty shocking” to see Potter’s arraignment and the fortifications erected around her house while the community is on edge. Turning back to the protests, Ainsley Earhardt rolled footage of a protester who carried a pig’s head wearing a police hat on a stake. Hegseth ripped the “absolute demonization of law enforcement” at that moment while tying it to attorney Ben Crump saying the Wright shooting was not an accident as the police have claimed. “That is throwing gasoline on a fire!” Hegseth said. “This woman has been 26 years on the force. She was...

QUITO (Reuters) - Ecuador on Wednesday raised the death toll from riots in four jails to 79, and said authorities had regained control following one of the bloodiest outbreaks of prison violence in its history. Police and troops were stationed at detention centers in the cities of Guayaquil, Cuenca and Latacunga, where gangs on Tuesday fought one another with handmade weapons in what authorities said was a coordinated outbreak of violence. The gangs began a battle for leadership within the prison system in December when a leader of Los Choneros, considered the system's most powerful gang, was killed in a shopping center several months after being released. Several of Tuesday's confrontations took place in maximum security areas of the Guayaquil and Cuenca prisons. Prison authority SNAI said all those killed the rioting were prisoners. "Thanks to the actions carried out between this institution and the National Police, the situation ... is under control," it added in a statement. It said it "continues to collect information on human losses and other aspects related to the clashes that have arisen." Inmates' relatives...

Saturday evening, the Minister of Health, Rémy Lamah, had mentioned a death toll of four. Health officials did not immediately specify why this death toll had been reduced to three. This is the first reported resurgence of the disease in West Africa, where the worst outbreak in history of the virus started, which killed more than 11,300 between 2013 and 2016. After an emergency meeting in Conakry, Dr Keïta, who heads the National Health Security Agency (ANSS), explained to the press that a person had died at the end of January in Gouecké, in the region of Forest Guinea, close to the border with Liberia. “His funeral took place in Gouecké on February 1 and some people who took part in this funeral began to have symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, bleeding and fever a few days later,” said the head of the health agency. The first samples tested by a laboratory set up by the European Union in Guéckédou, in the region, revealed the presence of the Ebola virus in some of them on Friday, he said. This situation...

DENVER (CBS4)– Denver District Attorney Beth McCann has ruled that Denver police officers were justified in shooting and killing a man who held a woman hostage at gunpoint. The shooting happened Sept. 12 near Colfax Avenue and Lowell. Investigators said it all started when they tried to pull over Christopher Escobedo. He took off, leading Adams County deputies on a chase before crashing. (credit: CBS) Escobedo then dragged his female passenger into a backyard on Meade Street and held a gun to her head. That’s when officers shot and killed him. “The officers in this situation were confronted with a very dangerous and escalating situation. Mr. Escobedo was ignoring their commands and threatening to kill his female hostage as he emerged from bushes holding a loaded gun to her head,” said District Attorney McCann in a statement. “This situation was preceded by Mr. Escobedo having shot at police officers during a high-speed chase. These officers ended the incident without serious injury or death to the female hostage or other officers. I find their decisions to fire both reasonable and legally...
One of the three Louisville police officers who opened fire at Breonna Taylor's apartment has blamed her boyfriend for her death saying he put her in an 'impossible situation' when he fired at cops.   Sergeant Jonathan Mattingly spoke out on the controversial shooting for the first time this week in interviews with ABC News and the Louisville Courier-Journal.  Mattingly, a 20-year veteran of the force, was one of two officers who directly shot at Taylor while serving a warrant at her home during a drug investigation on March 13.   He was the only officer wounded in the incident after he was shot by Taylor's boyfriend Kenneth Walker who mistook the cops for intruders.   Officers then returned fire, shooting into the apartment 32 times and killing 26-year-old Breonna in a hail of bullets. Mattingly and Walker on Wednesday presented their sides of the story to the publications, with both men pointing the finger at each other.  During his interview with the Courier-Journal, Mattingly acknowledged the police raid did not go as planned, but said he did not believe Breonna was killed...
Police in cities across America are unable to protect the neighborhoods that need them most if they are called to help control riots, civil rights activist Bob Woodson told "Tucker Carlson Tonight" Wednesday. "There is an old African proverb that when bull elephants fight, the grass always loses," Woodson said in response to the violence that erupted in Louisville after a former police officer was indicted in connection with the drug raid that led to the shooting death of Breonna Taylor earlier this year. LIVE UPDATES: PROTESTS ERUPT IN LOUISVILLE AFTER BREONNA TAYLOR GRAND JURY DECISION  "In this situation, the losers are poor Blacks ... they are the ones that are suffering," Woodson added. "It means that if police are downtown policing riots, it means they are not in the neighborhoods protecting them." Officer Brett Hankison, who was fired in June, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on three counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree. Neither of the other two officers involved in the raid were charged, a decision which caused hundreds of protesters to take to the streets of Kentucky's largest city. By Erikas Mwisi Kambale BENI, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Fifty-two inmates at a prison in the northeastern Congo city of Bunia have starved to death this year because of insufficient government funding, the United Nations and local authorities said. The Democratic Republic of Congo's jails are among the world's most overcrowded, according to the U.N., with inmates living in squalid conditions on meager rations. The Bunia prison operates at nearly 500% of capacity, U.N. figures show. "This situation is really worrying," said Bunia mayor Ferdinand Fimbo, blaming sporadic government support for malnutrition in the prison. President Felix Tshisekdei told his cabinet this month he would personally ensure prisons across the country did not run out of food or medicine. But the head of the Bunia prison, Camille Zonzi, was quoted in a report by the U.N. peacekeeping force in Congo as saying that the government had still only promised at a meeting last week to cover three months of the prison's expenses. Malnutrition is common in Congolese jails because food portions are allotted based on facilities' nominal capacity,...

Though Iran has long been dogged with accusations that the Middle Eastern nation has been lying about the true number of coronavirus-related deaths, a new breach in its records appears to finally confirm the allegations as fact. According to the BBC, an anonymous source working within the Iranian government sent the news agency documents to show the extent of the cover-up. One of the most staggering was the true number of deaths due to COVID-19, which were triple the official tally. As of July 20, the Iranian health ministry has claimed that 14,405 people died from the disease; however, internal data revealed that the number was actually 42,000. Similarly, though Iran has claimed that there had only been 278,827 recorded cases in the country, the leaked documents showed that 451,000 individuals have been infected. The leak also noted that the first death from COVID-19 occurred on January 22. However, Iran did not even acknowledge the first case of the virus until nearly a month later, on February 19. During those 28 days, 52 more people died from a disease that...
