The first piece of the International Space Station ever launched into orbit didn’t come from NASA—it actually came from Russia. The 41.2 foot module—dubbed “Zarya,” the Russian word for sunrise—took off on a reportedly gloomy day from a launch facility in Kazakhstan on November 20, 1998. When it did, it was the culmination of nearly a decade of geopolitical wheeling and dealing that began with the end of the Cold War in 1989, and ended with a partnership between two former enemies that would last more than 30 years. The U.S. was committed to working with Moscow on the ISS project, not only because it represented peace between two previously adversarial nations but also because it could help strengthen democracy in Russia. Delegations from both countries met several times over the course of years in hushed, shadowy meetings to hammer out the details. When the dust cleared, Russia would be the one to thrust the world into a new era of space travel. So the Zarya launch wasn’t just the dawn of a new space age to study the cosmos....

Hewitt said: “What happened last week is clearly part of football. “But Gareth is, on the pitch, the most successful England manager that we have had in 55 years. The troubled Michigan factory that exacerbated the ongoing baby formula shortage could reopen in just two weeks, according to the head of the Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Robert Califf says his agency is working closely with Abbot Laboratories to jumpstart production as frustrated parents slam the Biden administration's slow response to the crisis. The Sturgis, Michigan plant closed down in February after two babies who drank formula produced at the facility - which includes the brands Similac, Pedialite and Ensure - died from bacterial infections.  Califf says it's 'quite likely' that the company, which voluntarily recalled its own products amid scrutiny from federal regulators, will open in two weeks. 'Of course Abbot is responsible for the timeline, but I'm very comfortable with what they said about two weeks,' he told NBC's Today show Monday morning. The FDA commissioner says the government will soon announce plans to import product from abroad, as one baby formula executive predicts that shortages and heightened demand will last for the 'balance of the year.'  He defended the agency, noting that ordering the plant to close down earlier...

THE Six Nations is into its third weekend. But what are the red card rules? 1 Peter OMahony was sent off for Ireland against Wales in 2021Credit: Getty Images - Getty What are the red card rules in rugby? These are most commonly shown for foul or dangerous play with the player unable to continue and the team not being able to replace them, like in most sports. With tackling a large part of rugby, referees often need to keep an eye to make sure that players' health and safety are not being threatened excessively. These could include by tackling players targeting the head or producing tackles in the air - in particular spear tackles that see players tip their opposite number head first towards the ground. Other acts of foul play include biting, eye gouging and stamping. But unlike other sports, sending offs in the Rugby World Cup do not bring an automatic punishment of missing a set number of games. Instead, the red carded player must stand before a panel who decide firstly if the dismissal was correct,...
New York (CNN Business)The United States' largest trading partner isn't China, or Mexico. It's Canada. And the Ambassador Bridge, which separates the US and its neighbor to the north, may be the most economically important one-and-a-half miles of roadway in the Western Hemisphere. Until this past week it got very little attention for the crucial role it plays in the economies of the two nations.A total of $664 billion worth of goods moved between the two countries last year, according to US Commerce Department data. The state of Michigan estimates 30% of the total moved over the privately-owned Ambassador Bridge linking Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. An estimated 10,000 commercial vehicles cross the bridge daily. But not this past week. Protesters angered by vaccine mandates in Canada essentially shut down the bridge starting Monday night, and halted the flow of goods over the bridge by blockading the ramps on the Canadian side. Business groups sounded alarms about the massive costs caused by the closure, but police did not move to clear the bridge and arrest protesters until Saturday morning. (As of late...

(CNN)Flames crackle over the wails and prayers of grieving families as they mourn loved ones lost to Covid-19, whose bodies are laid on funeral pyres that burn through the night in India's capital, New Delhi. The families' grief reflects the unfolding tragedy in India -- now at the epicenter of the global pandemic -- Jessie Yeung, Clarissa Ward and Rishabh Pratap report. India is seeing more cases per day than any other country has witnessed -- pushing the global number of infections over 150 million. Anger is growing against India's leaders, who are accused of failing to mitigate a second wave of the disease. A spokesperson for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that while the responsibility belongs "first and foremost" to the government, the situation could not have been foreseen. India's woes are compounded by a vaccine shortage, caused by a lack of raw materials and overwhelming demand.  Similar problems are being seen in Latin America where new variants are helping drive a surge in cases across the region, says the regional health body. Slow vaccination rollouts have caused more...

France overcame one more obstacle on its way back to the rugby elite on Sunday in Dublin: since winning its last Six Nations in 2010 or playing its last World Cup final in 2011. The Gauls prevailed on Lansdowne Road ten years later, wearing the winning team outfit they want to be again: fierce defense and lethality in the important moments. A triumph that elevates them to the top of the tournament after two rounds – two victories and the same points as Wales – by defeating a depleted Ireland, proud of the defeat. It was a duel between the French ability to tear apart the rival with spaces – that improvisation so difficult to contain – and the Irish order, with the impacts of its forward and its endurance in defense. The France of the future, led by the creation of the half-scrum Antoine Dupont and the verticality of his rear, in front of an Ireland orphaned of its two leaders in the hinge: Jonny Sexton, victim of a concussion seven days ago, and Connor Murray . We’re one week away from an enormously important moment for the next four years of our country. On Jan. 5, two runoff races in Georgia will determine which party will control the Senate — whether Joe Biden will have a rubber stamp or a much-needed check on his agenda. Unfortunately, you’re obsessed with the next day, Jan. 6, when Congress will, in a pro forma action, certify the Electoral College vote. You have tweeted that, as long as Republicans have “courage,” they can overturn the results and give you four more years in office. In other words, you’re cheering for an undemocratic coup. You had every right to investigate the election. But let’s be clear: Those efforts have found nothing. To take just two examples: Your campaign paid $3 million for a...
Nations League Will be played from October 6 to 10 in Italy The Nations League 2020-21 already has its final draw. The 55 teams that started the adventure have already taken their place after six intense days battling from one end of Europe to another amid the pandemic. The coronavirus has been the protagonist in the groups. But many studs and scribbles later, the League of Nations has already drawn its final four, its promotions and its relegations definitively. Italy and Belgium joined Spain and France in the finals which will be played between October 6 and 10 of next year. None of the four teams that fought for the title in 2019 in Portugal repeat: Switzerland, Holland, England and the host, who was champion, were left by the way. There will be four newcomers … and a new winner who will expand his palmars. Group 1 of League A was more compressed than any other. Three teams came to the last day with options … but Italy did not fail. The ‘Azzurra’...
After Romania-Norway, another League of Nations match, Switzerland-Ukraine, was canceled on Tuesday. It is a draw that could give the result of these two meetings. Despite the health crisis, UEFA therefore maintained the 2nd edition of its League of Nations during the international windows of September, October and November 2020, even adding a friendly match during the last two windows. Or when financial interests jeopardize the health of the best players in Europe … If it will offer a superb “Final 4” (theFrench team is the first qualified), the European competition is not sporting anything important. As proof, this League of Nations 2020-2021 could end with two undisputed matches. Last Saturday, the Romania-Norway meeting was canceled, the Norwegian government having prohibited its selection from leaving the country because of a positive case detected the day before within the group. Tuesday, Switzerland-Ukraine was deprogrammed. And for good reason: a few hours before the match, the Canton of Lucerne decided to quarantine the Ukrainian selection. Switzerland saved by a draw? On these two matches, it was not the...
By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Long-simmering tensions between the United States and China have hit boiling point at the United Nations over the coronavirus pandemic, spotlighting Beijing's bid for greater multilateral influence in a challenge to Washington's traditional leadership. Chinese President Xi Jinping has accelerated his U.N. power play as President Donald Trump's disregard for international cooperation led to the United States quitting global deals on climate and Iran and leaving the U.N. Human Rights Council and the World Health Organization, diplomats say. "There's definitely, in my mind, a battle for the soul of the U.N. going on," said a senior European diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, adding that Trump's "America First" policy has been "damaging because the Chinese have a sort of smooth assertion that they are the true multilateralists." While Trump has made China one of his punching bags as he bids for re-election on Nov. 3, the diplomatic hostilities have spilled over in public meetings of the 193-member General Assembly and the 15-member Security Council. Xi had been expected to make a rare visit...
Jerusalem (CNN)On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will join the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain at the White House to mark historic normalization agreements between Israel and the two Arab countries. The last time such a ceremony took place in Washington was in 1994, when President Bill Clinton looked on as Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jordanian King Hussein signed a declaration that paved the way for a peace deal months later. For Trump, the timing is crucial. Less than two months before an election in which he trails in the polls, normalization agreements between Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain are major foreign policy achievements, even if the region was gradually moving towards these relationships regardless of who occupied the White House. How did we get here? For years, Israel has had covert relations with many of the Sunni Gulf states, driven in recent years by a mutual de facto alliance against Iran. Even so, the relations pre-date the Iran nuclear deal by more than a decade in some cases, as Gulf states...
