This is the last football season the Mountain West will use divisions, and it’s far from the most dramatic change the conference might experience. With the Pac-12 Conference flirting with expansion after losing Southern California and UCLA, the focus has turned to what that league will do next. Will it go after San Diego State? Do Boise State, Fresno State or UNLV have a shot at a Pac-12 invite? Even with change seemingly inevitable, the Mountain West has some familiar names expected to contend in both divisions this season. Here’s our best guess at how the season will play out. West Division 1. Fresno State Former California coach Jeff Tedford is back for his second go-around at Fresno State, but just as important is the return of quarterback Jake Haener, who threw 33 touchdown passes last season. Tedford is known for getting the most out of his quarterbacks, and the two go back to when Haener attended Tedford’s camps as a youngster. Around Haener, most of the offense is back from a team that averaged 33.4 points, and the Bulldogs...

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Danny Amendola, who earned two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots and became one of Tom Brady’s favorite playmakers during his five seasons in New England, is retiring. The veteran 36-year-old receiver posted a video on social media that featured highlights of his 13 NFL seasons with only one line: “Wouldn’t have it any other way.” The former Texas Tech standout made his NFL debut with the St. Louis Rams in 2009 as an undrafted free agent and spent his first four seasons there before being signed by the Patriots in 2013. He also had stops in Miami (2018), Detroit (2019, 2020) and Houston last season. He ends his career with 617 career receptions for 6,212 yards receiving and 24 touchdowns. Though undersized at 5-foot-11, he shined in New England’s system, scoring a touchdown in the Patriots’ Super Bowl win over Seattle to cap the 2014 season. He earned a second championship with them in 2016 during a championship run that included a catch during the Patriots’ historic comeback win over Atlanta. ...

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The Latest on the final round of the PGA Championship (all times local): ___ 10:15 a.m. First-time major winners have been nothing new in golf during this next generation of stars. The PGA Championship is no exception. Mito Pereira of Chile has a three-shot lead going into the final round at Southern Hills. He is trying to become the first PGA Tour rookie since Keegan Bradley in the 2011 PGA Championship to win a major. Chasing him are Matt Fitzpatrick of England and Will Zalatoris. Neither has won a major. Fitzpatrick is a two-time Ryder Cup player from England. But he has only one top-10 finish in the 24 previous majors he has played as a pro. Zalatoris was runner-up in the Masters in 2021. Cameron Young had never made a cut in a major until this week. He’s four shots behind. Eight of the last 13 champions of the PGA had never won a major. That’s about the same ratio for the Masters and U.S. Open. The closest major champions to the lead are...
It used to be the day when Tiger Woods took control at the majors. Now it is the one that underlines the stark limitations of his current physical state. There is no shame in that, of course, given all he has been through, but it does come with sadness. At the Masters the 46-year-old limped and winced his way to a third round 78, his worst–ever score at Augusta.  It was a similar story at the 104th USPGA Championship on Saturday where he shot 79, his worst score in this major, before withdrawing from the final round on Sunday.  Moving day they might call it but for Woods, poignantly, the direction was all downhill. Tiger Woods could not replicate the form he showed on Friday to make the weekend cut Woods battled his way around and in truth it could have been even worse for him RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next FORE! Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared University of Virginia swimmer Emma Weyant the 'rightful winner' of the NCAA championship 500-yard freestyle after denouncing the collegiate sports body for allowing transgender University of Pennsylvania athlete Lia Thomas to compete in - and ultimately win the event.  DeSantis, 43, posted his proclamation on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, claiming that by 'allowing men to compete in women's sports, the NCAA is destroying opportunities for women, making a mockery of its championships, and perpetuating a fraud.'  'In Florida, we reject these lies and recognize Sarasota's Emma Weyant as the best women's swimmer in the 500y freestyle,' the Republican wrote.  Weyant, 20, an Olympian from Sarasota, came in second to 22-year-old Thomas last week, clocking in at a personal record 4.34.99, which was nonetheless a whole 1.75 seconds slower than Thomas. Weyant was met with wild applause as she accepted her second-place medal - while social media blew up with claims that she was the 'real winner.' Just moments later Thomas, accepting her first-place honors for the victory, was met with near silence.  Now, in Florida...
A University of Pennsylvania athlete has swum her way to victory both a man and a woman, this time taking home an NCAA trophy on Thursday. Lia Thomas, 22, who previously competed as William on the men's swim team, has made history as the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA championship on Mar. 17, the school and dozens of media outlets announced immediately following the event.  Thomas is also the first Quaker female swimmer to win an NCAA individual title, according to a release by the school. She took home the gold in the 500 free at the 2022 NCAA Championships in a record-setting 4:33.24. In addition to her winning swim, she earned first-team All-America honors, the school reports.  Her title is only the fifth by a female Ivy League swimmer and the first since 2000, according to the release. Thomas previously swam on the university's men's swimming team for three years, right up until Nov. 2019, according to the university. The NCAA allows trans athletes to participate with their chosen gender and has a strict policy...
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs and star Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki have agreed to an $85-million, five-year deal, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person, confirming several reports, spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical. The agreement signals the Cubs hope to speed up the rebuilding process after breaking up their 2016 championship core before last season’s trade deadline. The 27-year-old Suzuki was a five-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner over nine seasons with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in Nippon Professional Baseball. He batted .317 with 38 home runs and 88 RBIs in 132 games last season and had nearly as many walks (87) as strikeouts (88). He is a career .315 hitter with 182 homers and 562 RBIs for Hiroshima. Suzuki plays right field, a position five-time Gold Glove winner Jason Heyward has manned for the Cubs since signing a $184 million, eight-year contract before the 2016 World Series championship season. The Cubs also have Ian Happ, Clint Frazier and Rafael Ortega in...

INDIANAPOLIS — Trey Calvin made a jumper from just inside the free-throw line with 10.5 seconds left to complete a late comeback from 16 points down to earn Wright State a 72-71 win over Northern Kentucky on Tuesday night to claim both the Horizon League championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Marques Warrick got himself open off a screen and drilled a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left to put Northern Kentucky in front 71-70, and the Norse had time to take the last shot of the game, but Bryson Langdon, momentarily open at the 3-point line, had a defender arrive at the same time as the ball and his desperation shot with a hand in his face was off. The Raiders closed the first half with a a 6-2 run to take a 39-32 lead at the half and Warrick took over in the second half, hitting a jumper and a 3-pointer to quickly push the Northern Kentucky lead to 44-34. He added a three-point play and three straight jumpers to push the lead to 16 points,...
