Local officials warned residents 'do not wait' and stressed 'time is of the essence' as the monster storm loomed in the Caribbean Sea just south of Cuba. Terrified residents have started desperately digging huge trenches to redirect flood water while others have stripped shelves bare of water and essentials. Stark pictures and videos from across the state show prolonged queues at checkouts as locals stocked up and prepare to bunker down ahead of the monster weather front. Ian strengthened from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane overnight Sunday, but it is feared it will warp into a major Category 4 this week - hitting Florida on Wednesday night or Thursday morning...
Follow DailyMail.com's latest updates on U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, a trip that could significantly escalate tensions with Beijing, which claims the self-ruled island as its own territory. Andrea Cavallier Host commentator 15:00 Is Nancy Pelosi going to Taiwan? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to touch down in Taipei around 10:40 a.m. ET. Pelosi would be the highest-ranking U.S. elected official to visit Taiwan since 1997. Her jet left the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday morning, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24. The site crashed earlier after 300,000 people tried to chart Pelosi's journey. China has repeatedly warned against Pelosi going to Taiwan, which it claims as its own, and the US said on Monday that it would not be intimidated by Chinese 'sabre rattling' over the visit. U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to arrive in Taipei later on Tuesday. Edinson Cavani came off the bench to rescue a point for Ralf Rangnick's troops by prodding home on 71 minutes. Allan Saint-Maximin had beautifully curled the home side into a seventh-minute lead - and they deserved all three. But De Gea ended up proving the difference with his stunning late show in the 1-1 draw. One United fan wrote on Twitter that the 31-year-old is 'the best keeper in...

LAS VEGAS — We are ringside—finally—for the third installment of Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, a fight 20-months, two positive COVID tests and one lawsuit in the making. It’s been a noticeably subdued fight week in Vegas; a spike in COVID cases in the area forced most of the fight week events, including the weigh-in, behind closed doors. Both fighters tipped the scales at career high weights: 277 pounds for Fury, 238 pounds for Wilder. And that is the biggest storyline in my eyes. Fury is just four pounds heavier than he was in February 2020, when he battered Wilder over seven-plus rounds. Wilder weighed 231 pounds for that fight. Wilder believes the extra weight will make him more durable; some boxing analysts see the weight potentially causing Wilder to fatigue early, something we saw from him...

He entered this fight at No. 12 in the division, but by beating the No. 9 ranked Maia (28-11), it will play a role in his trajectory toward more high-stake fights in the division. Mother Jones illustration; Michael Brochstein/Sipa/AP; Getty Let our journalists help you make sense of the noise: Subscribe to the Mother Jones Daily newsletter and get a recap of news that matters.Happy Friday and welcome back to Mother Jones’ live coverage of Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial. The former president’s lawyers, who are set to deliver their defense today, are expected to largely stick to the claim that the Senate trial is unconstitutional because Trump is no longer in office. As my colleague Pema Levy noted, that’s a pretty weak argument, and most constitutional scholars have rejected it. Still, Republicans hellbent on acquitting Trump have made this dubious contention the basis of their opposition to Trump’s impeachment trial. As for the prosecution, House impeachment managers have been widely hailed—even by some Republicans—for their exceptionally sharp presentation over the past three days. Their case for conviction featured never-before-seen video footage that underscored, in both frightening and emotional terms, the harm of Trump’s actions and how greater tragedy was only narrowly averted. Follow along for updates below: 9 a.m. ET: Despite his widely-panned,...

On Thursday, Democrats will continue making their case for conviction after spending Wednesday presenting previously unknown details and video footage that revealed just how close pro-Trump insurrectionists had come to potentially endangering the lives of lawmakers during the January 6 riot. In another piece of damning evidence, House impeachment managers showed that Trump knew that Mike Pence was in danger when he lashed out at the then-vice president on Twitter—an attack that was instantly picked up by insurrectionists, who were seen in a new video reading Trump’s tweet to fellow rioters. As House impeachment manager Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) put it, “They were paying attention. They also followed instructions.”  Follow along for the latest: 10:00 a.m. ET: House impeachment managers are expected to discuss the various “harms” caused by Trump’s actions, physical and beyond, as well as the...

Day 2 will see Democrats lay out the case for a Senate conviction of the former president over his role in fomenting the January 6 Capitol insurrection. Things kick off at noon, and you can expect more footage taken inside the Capitol during the attack after House impeachment managers started the first day with an unflinching video montage chronicling that violence. If you missed Day 1, we’ve got an excellent podcast episode breaking down what happened, including lead House impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin’s deeply emotional remarks on the personal stakes of the trial. (Raskin brought his daughter and son-in-law to the Capitol on the day of the attack, and had buried his 25-year-old son the day before.) The opening day of Trump’s second impeachment trial was also noteworthy for the rambling, widely-panned performance from Trump’s defense team. Follow along for live...
Europa Press/AP Let our journalists help you make sense of the noise: Subscribe to the Mother Jones Daily newsletter and get a recap of news that matters.Good morning and welcome to the second impeachment trial of Donald J. Trump. The historic proceedings—which mark both the first time a president has been impeached twice, as well as the first impeachment trial for a former president—come about a month after the House charged Trump with inciting the January 6 Capitol insurrection. The attack left five people, including a Capitol police officer, dead. Today’s debate, set to begin at 1 p.m. ET, will largely focus on the constitutionality of the trial, with Trump’s defense arguing it isn’t because he’s no longer in office.  With many Republicans signaling they won’t vote to convict Trump no matter the evidence, Trump’s acquittal is all but a foregone conclusion, and the trial is expected to be an unusually swift one. But as my colleague Pema Levy explains, what happens over the next week or so will still be incredibly consequential and perhaps even more damaging for Republicans...
Mother Jones Illustration Let our journalists help you make sense of the noise: Subscribe to the Mother Jones Daily newsletter and get a recap of news that matters.Good morning and welcome to the inauguration of Joe Biden. Today’s ceremony, which will look starkly different from previous inaugurations in light of the pandemic, kicks off at 12 p.m. ET. Unprecedented security measures are in place following the murderous attack on the Capitol exactly two weeks ago, with 25,000 National Guard troops—roughly five times the number of service members currently stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan—patrolling the area. Donald Trump is, of course, snubbing the festivities. Instead, he’ll be spending his final hours in office with a military-style send-off that reportedly failed to attract even Mike Pence. John Kelly, Don McGahn, and Anthony Scaramucci are also among former White House officials to have declined invites.
