It is the iconic command post where President Joe Biden met with members of his Cabinet and counterterrorism experts to discuss the operation against al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri before ordering a strike. It’s where previous presidents have watched video feeds as U.S. forces target terrorists overseas. And it’s where Biden learned of the nightmare scenario last year when 13 American service members were killed by a suicide bomber at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan. Staff work around the clock in the Situation Room, a 5,000-square-foot complex in the West Wing where national security aides monitor international and domestic events. It has been the hub for critical moments and decisions, including one in which Biden examined a model of al Zawahiri’s house before approving an over-the-horizon attack. Presidents and their top aides use the complex to conduct secure phone calls and briefings. The setup also has a secure feed to Air Force One, which former President George W. Bush used to communicate with aides on Sept. 11 as he was in the air. Few parts of...
The White House on Tuesday released a photo of President Joe Biden meeting with his national security team on July 1, where they outlined the operation to take out al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. In the photo, Biden is seen interacting with CIA Director William Burns, who is sitting to the president's right and wearing a face mask. The meeting took place in the Situation Room at the White House. During the briefing, Biden questioned his team about the proposed operation and examined a model that was constructed of the safe house in Kabul where al-Zawahiri was hiding. The White House tweeted the picture with the caption: 'On July 1, President Biden meets with his national security team to discuss the counterterrorism operation to take out Ayman al-Zawahiri. At this meeting, the President was briefed on the proposed operation and shown a model of the safe house where Al-Zawahiri was hiding.' Attending the meeting along with Burns were Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, National Counterterrorism Center Director Christine Abizaid, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer,...
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Neither Nazem Kadri, Johnny Gaudreau nor John Klingberg could sign with the Flyers even if they had their sights set on Philadelphia. Before any of the top NHL free agents had agreed to a deal this week, general manager Chuck Fletcher declared the Flyers out of contention for all of them because of “the reality of our cap situation.” READ MORE: Calls For Increased SEPTA Transit Police Presence After 19-Year-Old Shot Multiple Times On Market-Frankford Subway Platform“We don’t have the cap space to pursue those high-end type of free agents,” Fletcher said. “It probably precluded us from looking at some of the more expensive options in the market.” If that sounds depressing for Flyers fans, it is. But it was also the grim reality for a number of teams across the NHL grapping with a salary cap ceiling that rose only $1 million this year as the league rebounds from the financial impact of the pandemic. It was the first increase since 2019. Being locked in salary cap jail prevented the Flyers from bringing home Gaudreau, the...

Texas officials are continuing to come under scrutiny over their response to the Uvalde elementary school shooting as reports indicate there was a major delay in tactical teams breaching the school to take out the gunman, who took more than 20 lives. According to two officials briefed on the situation told the New York Times for a Friday report that a Border Patrol tactical team, which was requested to the scene by police, were actually ordered to delay their entry into the school as the gunman was barricaded in a classroom with students. The tactical team arrived at the scene around noon, but did not breach until nearly an hour later, the officials saying local police were telling them to hold back. According to Texas Department of Safety head Steven McCraw, the on-scene commander at the time thought the situation had “transitioned” from an active shooter situation to a “barricade” shooter situation with no children at risk, which he admitted was the “wrong” decision in hindsight. While the shooter was in the room, which included two adjoined classrooms, multiple...

President Joe Biden is meeting virtually with leaders of Australia, Japan and India Thursday morning to discuss the implications the Russian invasion will have in the Indo-Pacific region as the White House formally asked Congress for $10 billion in additional aid for Ukraine. Biden will speak at 9:00 a.m. from the Situation Room via video call with Quad Leaders Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio. The Quad Leaders' aim is to tackle pressing challenges affecting the Indo-Pacific. Specifically, the meeting Thursday will likely look at how to make sure China does not take Russia's lead and invade the island nation of Taiwan. It also comes as concerns arise over India's handling of Russia's full-scale invasion into Ukraine last week. Russia is a massive arms supplier for India. The nation provides military equipment like missile defense systems, which are crucial for deterrence against China and Pakistan. Modi would not denounce the Russian invasion, making India one of the 35 states that abstained from a resolution brought during an emergency United Nations...

MEDIA WINNER: Jennifer Griffin Fox News National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin had some sobering words for hosts of The Five who suggested the Biden administration was overhyping the crisis in eastern Europe for political purposes. After President Joe Biden’s speech Friday afternoon, Five co-hosts Greg Gutfeld and Kennedy suggested the administration is hyping or even faking the threat of war in eastern Europe because of the Durham investigation. In that affair, conservative media has seized upon technical jargon in a motion filed in federal court in order to claim that Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign hacked and spied on former President Donald Trump. That claim is unfounded. When Griffin joined the show from the Pentagon, she proceeded to bury the idea that the situation in Ukraine is being overplayed by the Biden administration to distract from the Durham investigation. She smacked down the idea that this was a newly-created crisis, citing news she had personally been reporting over the past two weeks, and spoke frankly about the potentially devastating and “bloody” consequences of war. “Right now, every American should be watching this and knowing that this is deadly serious,” Griffin said. “This is not some wag-the-dog situation.” The situation...
(CNN)President Joe Biden watched in real time Wednesday as US commandos landed in Syria to raid a three-story home, surrounded by olive trees, where the top leader of ISIS was living with his wife and members of his family. From the head of the Situation Room table, Biden watched anxiously as an American helicopter suffered mechanical problems on the ground. There was relief in the room when children emerged from the first floor of the building, running to safety. Moments later, an explosion rocked the site: a suicide detonation that killed Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, his wife and his children, blowing their bodies outside the building and onto the surrounding land. The details of how Biden monitored the raid came from senior administration officials, who recounted the raid in detail on Thursday morning. They described an operation months in the making.Read More"We think the impact of (the killing of al-Qurayshi) is going to be a blow to ISIS," a senior administration official said, saying the terrorist "was heavily involved in running many of the operations." A leaked White House Situation Room document reveals how the Biden administration was still working out how to transport American nationals and Afghan allies out of Kabul on the day before the Taliban seized the Afghan capital. It offers fresh evidence that officials were unprepared for the rapid collapse of the Afghan government as American troops departed the country. The notes, entitled 'Summary of Conclusions for Meeting of the Deputies Small Group,' were taken during a National Security Council meeting on Aug. 14 - the day the Taliban captured the key northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. Kabul was already all but encircled and hours later Taliban gunman would sweep into the city, triggering a frantic evacuation. Images of Afghan men falling from departing planes shocked the world and have cast a shadow over the Biden administration ever since. The document, published by Axios on Tuesday, shows an administration that was still putting in place plans to contact American nationals, members of staff and Afghan allies while the Taliban was at the gates to Kabul. 'The Department of State will immediately stand up...
Ahead of Saturday’s NFL Wild Card game between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, CNN data reporter and Bills fan Harry Enten and New Day co-anchor and Patriots fan John Berman faced off as they were treated to a surprise appearance by Situation Room anchor and Bills superfan Wolf Blitzer from the treadmill in his home basement. Enten said the Bills have a “better defense than the Patriots. If this is a shootout, the Bills are going to win. The Patriots want to keep it low-scoring. And to keep it low-scoring, they can win just like they won in the first meeting back in Orchard Park.” In that matchup, on Dec. 6 in windy conditions, the Patriots won 14-10, having thrown for just 19 yards on two of three pass attempts. The Situation Room graphic played as Blitzer made a surprise appearance. “Oh, my God, look where we are right now, we’re in The Situation Room,” said Berman, as Enten appeared surprised. “And in this case, The Situation Room appears to be Wolf Blitzer’s basement on his treadmill.” “A very low-tech Situation Room here in The...

President Joe Biden revealed Thursday he personally called up a hospital after a friend struggled to get someone care in the emergency room. “Last night I was on the television — television…. I was on the telephone with a person at an emergency hospital ward in Pennsylvania,” Biden began, sharing his story at an event promoting the coronavirus vaccine mandates in Illinois on Thursday. Biden explained his friend’s “significant other,” a woman, had difficulty breathing while suffering from a high fever prompting his friend to take her to the hospital. He said the waiting room was so crowded and backed up that the woman was unable to be cared for by medical staff immediately. “Because I knew this person, I called the desk, the receiving nurse, and asked what the situation was,” Biden said. The president said he was not complaining because the nurses and doctors were “getting the living hell kicked out of them” due to the coronavirus pandemic. “To make a long story short, it took a while, because all of the, not all, the vast majority of...

Trump administration coronavirus testing czar Brett Giroir rebuked former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb for saying social distancing rules at the start of the coronavirus pandemic were “arbitrary.” Gottlieb also suggested that Trump’s exploitation of Covid policies as a political wedge issue “really hurt us.” Giroir spoke to CNN’s Brianna Keilar on Monday for New Day, where he was asked about Gottlieb’s claims that the first Covid guidelines released by the CDC were not based upon actual science. Gottlieb also spoke of how the White House’s disputes with CDC on this matter set the stage for how many Americans lost confidence in decisions that were made to protect public health. When asked for his response, Giroir said “I don’t remember any conversation in the Situation Room where 10 feet was discussed,” as Gottlieb claimed. He also disputed Gottlieb characterizing initial distancing guidelines as “arbitrary,” saying that officials had to make the most out of what data they had at the time. “A lot of what we have in the pandemic is not written in stone, but it’s not arbitrary either. It’s...

President Joe Biden huddled in the White House Situation Room on Thursday with his national security team and delayed a meeting with Israeli prime minister after explosions rocked Kabul, killing at least 13.  It's the latest crisis for the president, who has stuck firm to the August 31st deadline to withdraw American troops from the country amid rising tensions as the Taliban solidifies its control.   Secretary of State Tony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley were all seen arriving at the White House on Thursday morning. Blinken was scheduled to be there for the meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett but Austin had no events on his public schedule for Thursday.  'The President met with his national security team this morning, including Secretary Blinken, Secretary Austin, Chairman Milley, and commanders on the ground. JOE Biden's situation room photo has the wrong times for London and Moscow - sparking a flurry of conspiracy theories claiming the photo was staged. Boris Epshteyn, the strategic advisor on the Trump 2020 Campaign, pointed out the error on Twitter, prompting some conspiracy theorists to question whether the pic was staged - or taken "months ago". Epshteyn said: "Real question. Why is Moscow time wrong in this photo? "Time difference between London and Moscow is only 2...

WYLIE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – A special room at the Wylie Police Department got a makeover last year. On Tuesday afternoon, the creator, Kunal Kapur, was honored for it. The 18-year-old isn’t your ordinary student – often spending time studying, applying for colleges and fulfilling his role as life scout for Troop 358. For his final project, he gave the Wylie Crime Victims Advocate room a facelift. “This is where kids go when they’re in a situation with their family life or just a problem situation,” Kapur told CBS 11 News. “The whole point of this room is that they’re going to be able to feel a bit more comfortable, they’re going to feel safe, and they’re going to feel at least some form of happiness in a time of obvious distress.” The soon-to-be Texas A&M Aggie says seeing other police departments create a space for kids inspired him to bring the vision to life. Donors and his family helped. It took Kapur nearly 5 months to complete. “I’ve always been somebody that wants to help others in anyway I can....
Former President Donald Trump got in an obscenity-laced screaming match with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley as the president tried to get Milley to take charge of a crackdown on domestic protests last summer. Trump berated the top military commander and Army General over the president's demand that Milley oversee the effort – which Milley resisted by invoking longstanding constraints on military interference in domestic affairs.   'I said you're in f---ing charge!' Trump yelled at Milley, according to a new Axios excerpt from Wall Street Journal reporter Michael Bender's book, Frankly, We Did Win This Election: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost. 'Well, I'm not in charge!' Milley shouted back, according to Bender, further stoking Trump's fury. 'You can't f---ing talk to me like that!' Trump responded. OLIVIER DOULIERY/AFP Former President Donald Trump and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley engaged in an ugly shouting match in a heated Situation Room confrontation according to a new book excerpt first published by Jonathan Swan and Axios. The excerpt comes from The Wall Street Journal’s Michael Bender and forthcoming book, Frankly, We Did Win This Election. The heated dust-up came in June of 2020 as civil protests swept the nation following the extrajudicial murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, which spawned a racial reckoning across the country. As Swan describes the context of the argument, Trump wanted to “invoke the Insurrection Act and put Milley in charge of a scorched-earth military campaign to suppress protests that had spiraled into riots in several cities.” Bender describes the Situation Room dust-up: Seated in the Situation Room with [Attorney General Bill] Barr, Milley, and [Secretary of Defense Mark] Esper, Trump exaggerated claims about the violence and alarmed officials … by announcing he’d just put Milley “in charge.” Privately, Milley confronted Trump about his role. He...
