A massive water main break wreaked havoc on several New Jersey towns, leaving tens of thousands of residents - and a local trauma hospital - without running water, and trigged at least one car-swallowing sinkhole. Water gushed for hours from the 72-inch, 140-year-old pipe that broke in Branch Brook Park on the border of Newark and neighboring Belleville around 8 a.m. on Tuesday. At one point during the day, a sinkhole opened swallowing an entire vehicle. Only a tire could be sticking out from the water. The driver told NBC that she saw water bubbling up in front of her on the street and made a quick escape from her car. She was not injured.  The water emergency forced the City of Newark to cancel summer school and prompted some area hospitals to divert patients as community residents and businesses were urged to conserve water.  Boil water advisories are in effect until further notice as a precaution for Newark and Belleville residents. The situation will be re-evaluated on Wednesday morning. A massive water main break wreaked havoc on several New Jersey...
It was closer than she wanted, but progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar (D) narrowly defeated centrist Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels in their primary matchup Tuesday night, winning on a margin that indicates a much shakier standing in her Minneapolis district than most expected. Samuels ran largely on backlash to Omar’s leftist positions, including her support for defunding the police, which has become a hot-button issue in Minneapolis since the murder of George Floyd in 2020. The congresswoman is one of the most liberal members of the House Democratic Caucus, and she has occasionally bucked the party on major policy votes alongside the rest of the so-called progressive “squad.” Although he ultimately lost, Samuels’ candidacy appears to have struck a chord with some voters’ distaste for Omar’s progressive approach. At the point the AP called her race, she was only about 2 percentage points ahead. Leading up to the primary election, Omar remained seemingly unfazed. Not only did she have the benefit of incumbency, but she was backed by a number high-profile progressive figures, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)...
What would it have taken for the Dodgers to get Juan Soto from the Nats? To beat out the Padres, LA would have had to give up a bunch of major prospects. The Dodgers were one of the finalists in the battle to make a blockbuster trade for Juan Soto, who ultimately went to the Padres. San Diego gave up six players, including their No. 1, 3 and 14 prospects, to get Soto and first baseman Josh Bell. While Los Angeles didn’t get the young superstar, there is still plenty of curiosity around what it would have taken to make the trade happen. Thanks to J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group, we have an idea. Dodgers would have had to give up 6-7 prospects for Juan SotoOn the Bleav in Dodgers podcast, Hoornstra reported an interaction of the trade demands the Nationals had for LA. “According to my sources, it was a package of six or seven prospects,” Hoornstra said. “The headliners were Diego Cartaya and Bobby Miller who are respectively the top position player and the top...

The Miami Herald has reported that there was another shooting incident later that same evening about a half-mile away from Burney Park. Though police are still investigating, they believe that the two shootings may have been connected. (CNN)The search warrant executed on former President Donald Trump's premises at Mar-a-Lago represents a seismic shift in the overall landscape of the investigations against him. THE FedEx Cup play-offs start this week in Memphis, and with only three events standing between them and an $18million payday, all the big guns are there - apart from the LIV rebels, of course. Just how worried should we be about food additives such as emulsifiers, preservatives, colours and artificial sweeteners? In the past, the additives used in food were essentially pretty simple — think of salt, used to help store food for longer. But these days, pick up any processed food, from biscuits to curry sauce, and the list of chemical additives in it may exceed the ingredients you actually recognise as food. But are they bad for us? Some people are definitely sensitive to certain food additives. One of the most common sensitivities is to sulphites, which are primarily used as a preservative — you find them in foods including dried fruit; jams and dips such as guacamole; processed meats; fresh and frozen crustaceans such as prawns; as well as drinks, including soft drinks, cider, beer, wine and cordials. (Check labels for additive numbers E220-228 and E150b and 150d or names such as sulphur dioxide, sodium sulphite and sulphite ammonia caramel.) The OSCE experts who put together the report traveled to Kyiv and met with Ukrainian authorities there as well as Bucha and Irpin, where they found "grave breaches" of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Convention. The report "found credible evidence" that suggested "some patterns of violent acts which had been repeatedly documented during the conflict," including "killing, rape abductions or massive deportations of civilians, qualified as a widespread or systematic attack against a civilian population."The OSCE mission that compiled the report wrote that 1.3 million Ukrainian citizens have been deported against their will to Russia and said there was evidence that tens of thousands of civilians had been detained at so-called filtration centers before...

Charles P. Rettig, commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, testifies during the Senate Finance Committee hearing titled The IRS Fiscal Year 2022 Budget, in Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C., June 8, 2021.Tom Williams | Pool | Reuters Senate Democrats on Sunday passed their climate, health and tax package, including nearly $80 billion in funding for the IRS. Part of President Joe Biden's agenda, the Inflation Reduction Act allocates $79.6 billion to the agency over the next 10 years. More than half of the money is meant for enforcement, with the IRS aiming to collect more from corporate and high-net-worth tax dodgers. The remainder of the funding is earmarked for operations, taxpayer services, technology, development of a direct free e-file system and more. Collectively, those improvements are projected to bring in $203.7 billion in revenue from 2022 to 2031, according to recent estimates from the Congressional Budget Office. GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group said an Israeli airstrike late Saturday killed its top commander for the southern Gaza Strip, a day after Israel killed the Iranian-backed group’s commander for northern Gaza in an air raid that triggered the worst cross-border conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants since the end of an 11-day war in 2021. Al-Quda Brigades of Islamic Jihad confirmed Sunday that the airstrike in the southern Gaza city of Rafah had killed Khaled Mansour, the commander, and two fellow militants. It said five other civilians, including a child and three women, were also killed in the airstrike that flattened several homes in Rafah. Late Saturday, Gaza’s Health Ministry said 24 people have been killed so far in the coastal strip, including six children. The number doesn’t likely include all of those who were killed in the Rafah airstrike because Civil Defense responders were still looking for bodies and survivors under the rubble. For now, the two highest-ranking commanders in Islamic Jihad and several other militants are among the dead. Israel...

The Chicago Bears held their fourth practice in full pads Saturday morning at Halas Hall, and for the first time this summer they went live with tackling, leading to an injury on the first snap. Wide receiver N’Keal Harry had to be helped off the field, unable to put weight on his left leg after linebacker Nicholas Morrow and free safety Eddie Jackson tackled him on a wide receiver screen that was stopped near the line of scrimmage. The team ran one more live play and that was it for tackling on the day during a practice in high heat and humidity that lasted about 1 hour, 50 minutes. Here is more about Harry, the depth at wide receiver and three more things we learned. 1. The Bears suddenly were short on wide receivers after N’Keal Harry suffered what could be a left ankle or foot injury. Lilly said in a statement on Saturday that it recognizes abortion as a "divisive and deeply personal issue with no clear consensus among the citizens of Indiana." "Despite this lack of agreement, Indiana has opted to quickly adopt one of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the United States," Eli Lilly said. "We are concerned that this law will hinder Lilly's — and Indiana's — ability to attract diverse scientific, engineering and business talent from around the world. Given this new law, we will be forced to plan for more employment growth outside our home state." Indiana's Legislature on Friday became the first in the nation to pass new legislation restricting access to abortions since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The state was among the earliest Republican-run...

MANCHESTER CITY are the Premier League champions - with their top stars adding another winner's medal to their collection on Sunday after a thrilling win over Aston Villa. Under current rules, 23 players are guaranteed to bag a medal. 11Not every member of a Premier League-winning squad is entitled to a winner's medalCredit: AFP Stars must make at least five Prem appearances to get their hands on the personal silverware. But unfortunately, not everyone makes the cut and are forced to go without - just like these past title winners below. GARY NEVILLE The legendary Manchester United right back has eight Premier League winners' medals with the club, which is nothing to sneeze at. But the Sky Sports pundit could have had ten in seasons 17 years. Neville made his debut during the 1993-94 season, but only managed one appearance at a time when you needed ten league appearances to qualify - a rule that changed to five in 2012. TOKYO (AP) — Hiroshima on Saturday remembered the atomic bombing 77 years ago as officials, including the head of the United Nations, warned against nuclear weapons buildup and fears grow of another such attack amid Russia’s war on Ukraine. “Nuclear weapons are nonsense. They guarantee no safety — only death and destruction,” said U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who joined the prayer at the Hiroshima Peace Park. “Three quarters of a century later, we must ask what we’ve learned from the mushroom cloud that swelled above this city in 1945,” he said. The United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, destroying the city and killing 140,000 people. It dropped a second bomb three days later on Nagasaki, killing another 70,000. Japan surrendered on Aug. 15, ending World War II and Japan’s nearly half-century of aggression in Asia. Fears of a third atomic bombing have grown amid Russia’s threats of nuclear attack since its war on Ukraine began in February. Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, in his peace declaration, accused Putin of “using his...
