The Olympic soccer competition at the 2024 Paris Games will conclude with the women’s final — instead of the men’s — for the first time. FIFA announced the Olympic soccer competition schedule on Wednesday. The governing body also said there will be no double-headers in France, making each match a standalone event. The women’s final will take place on Aug. 10 at the Parc des Princes in Paris. The men’s gold-medal match will be played at the same stadium the day before. The combined tournament will start on July 24 and go to seven cities in France: Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice and Saint-Etienne. As host, France’s men’s team will play in the tournament opener in Marseille, while the women’s team will play on July 25 in Lyon, site of 2019 Women’s World Cup final. “That this should take place in France is particularly exciting,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a prepared statement. “A country with a distinguished history of developing and excelling in both men’s and women’s football, which has hosted some of the most iconic FIFA...
PARIS (AP) — Lorena Wiebes of the Netherlands sprinted to victory on Sunday in the first stage of the women’s Tour de France which returned after a 33-year absence. The Team DSM rider struck in the last 150 meters of the 82-kilometer (51-mile) circuit in Paris to beat former Olympic champion Marianne Vos to the line on the Champs-Elysees. Wiebes punched the air in celebration. Tour of Flanders champion Lotte Kopecky ended third. It’s the first time since 1989 that a women’s edition of the Tour de France is being held. Tour de France organizer Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) previously organized La Course, a one-day race held in Paris coinciding with the men’s Tour. The first stage started from the Eiffel Tower and ended on the iconic avenue, just hours before the conclusion of the men’s race. The “Tour de France Femmes” will end July 31 in eastern France at La Super Planche des Belles Filles, a spectacular uphill finish often visited by the men’s Tour. ___ More AP sports: https://apnews.com/hub/apf-sports and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press....

French prosecutors have called for life sentences for 12 of the 20 men suspected of orchestrating the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks. One of the accused men, Salah Abdeslam, is believed to be the last survivor from the cell of 10 men who struck the city and could face life in prison without parole, a rarely doled-out penalty in France that rules out any reduction of his sentence. A Brussels-born French citizen, Abdeslam is alleged to have been central to the operation by escorting the three bombers who blew themselves up at the Stade de France, according to the Guardian. “Not everyone is a jihadi, but all of those you are judging accepted to take part in a terrorist group, either by conviction, cowardliness, or greed,” prosecutor Nicolas Braconnay told the court this week. The election of Donald Trump and a room full of men drove actress Andie MacDowell into what she says was her first panic attack. “I had this kind of crazy experience, right after Trump got elected. I was really disturbed that nobody seemed to care about the vagina[-grabbing] comment; I had gotten really sad. I went to do a job, a day’s work, and I had my very first panic attack,” the Groundhog Day star said in an interview with Marie Claire.  “I was getting ready to shoot something, and I turn around and it’s, like, a roomful of men. Like, a sea of men. It flashed on something that was personal for me. And I dropped to my knees. I left the room, and went into this fake bathroom on the set, and looked at myself in the mirror and said, ‘Get your shit together.'” Andie MacDowell didn’t mention the film she was shooting but said the experience “freaked me out, not seeing any other women. PARIS (AP) — A group of armed men held up a Chanel jewelry boutique in Paris in broad daylight Thursday and escaped on two motorcycles. The estimated value of the goods stolen from the store, which specializes in high-end watches and fine jewelry, was not immediately known. The police prefecture tweeted that members of a special brigade went to the scene after the heist, which occurred close to 3 p.m. The boutique on rue de la Paix, not far from the French capital’s opera house, has been standing in for a Chanel shop on the posh Place Vendome that is undergoing renovation. A video circulating on social media of what appeared to be the heist showed four men dressed in black and with their faces covered escaping on two motorcycles. Three of them had been in the store while one stood guard with what looked like an automatic rifle strapped across him. Le Parisien newspaper quoted a supervisor at a nearby store, Cyril Ngo, as saying that passers-by did not notice the weapon or understand what was going...

Two members of the security team for Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore are under investigation after they arrested a man wrongly accused of robbing a high-ranking LAPD commander's wife of her phone in Marseille, France. The extraordinary case of 'not your jurisdiction' came on November 17, during a week-long overseas trip in which members of LAPD top brass met with their French counterparts to discuss security preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris (2024) and LA (2028).  Several of the commanders' wives accompanied them on the trip, including that of Assistant Chief Robert Marino, who wrongly accused a man of stealing her phone after they bumped into each other on the streets of the Mediterranean port city.  The security guards arrested the unsuspecting man despite being in a foreign country with no evidence to suggest he had committed the crime.  Chief Moore has issued an apology 'for the unfortunate incident' to both French and US officials in Marseille and has ordered an internal investigation into the circumstances of the mishap.  The two officers who carried out the arrest have...

Former President Barack Obama blasted leaders playing politics with climate change during a speech on Monday as he condemned his successor Donald Trump for pulling out of the Paris agreement.  Obama, speaking at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, called out Russia and China for their lack of action at the same time as he criticized Republican politicians at home.  He issued a call to arms while expressing his anger at the way partisan politics had got in the way of tackling climate change.  He said he and President Joe Biden had been 'constrained in large part by the fact that one of our two major parties has decided not only to sit on the sidelines but express active hostility toward climate science and make climate change a partisan issue. 'For those listening back home in the U.S., let me say this: It doesn't matter if you're a Republican or a Democrat if your Florida house is flooded by rising seas, or your crops fail in the Dakotas or your California house is burning down.' A secret ledger hidden in the archives of the Parisian police and containing the criminal files of a group of prostitutes labelled 'the Undominated' has been revealed. French officers obsessively tracked and charted the kept women of 19th-century Paris, from the city's elite sex workers to madames who procured girls for money, with the records stored in The Book of the Courtesans.    The leather bound volume contains stories of over 700 women in the city, from famous actresses to gold digging dancers. Although little-known today, many of the women listed rose to become extremely wealthy and famous in their own right - wielding power in the French capital through the men they bedded.  In 2006 it was transcribed and published in French by historian Gabrielle Houbre, and journalist Summer Brennan has since been translating passages of the text into English online. Among the shocking stories include a young women recruited to work as a prostitute from the sweet shop she worked in, as well as a dancer who tricked men into giving her their fortunes.  MERY LAURENT: HIGH-CLASS PROSTITUTE TO PARISIAN ARTISTS  ...

At the opening of the hearing, the court noted the absence of Anis Bahri and issued a summons to appear. The latter having notified his refusal, the court decided to override and continue the hearing in his absence. One of his co-defendants, Réda Kriket, 39, who challenged his lawyers last week, finally decided to be represented. In a text read to the court, the ex-robber of French nationality clarified that he challenged French law, which is “not (his)”. “Today he would like to be defended on the facts for which he is accused, (…) with some reservations. But he still wishes to explain, once and for all, that there was never a project terrorist, “one of Réda Kriket’s lawyers, Me Yassine Bouzrou, told the press. Is there such a thing as too many women in leadership positions? Oui, according to France’s Ministry of Public Service, which recently served Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo with a fine of 90,000 Euros (about $109,470) for appointing too many women as city officials, NPR reported. French law dictates that men and women must be represented in local government at a rate of at least 40% each. In 2018, her office hired 11 women and five men into senior roles — giving women a 69% majority for new appointments. On Tuesday, Hidalgo tweeted that she and the women serving alongside her would gladly travel to deliver the fee personally. Hidalgo copped to the takeover and said her intention was to “promote and one day achieve parity” with men throughout all of French government. Last year, France implemented a waiver to the 40% rule, so long as the imbalance in new hires does not contribute to an overall disparity across government, according to Le Monde. In that case, they found Paris’ government is still in compliance with just 47%...

PARIS (AP) — A Paris court on Wednesday convicted a former Vatican ambassador to France of sexually assaulting five men in 2018 and 2019, and handed him a suspended 8-month prison sentence. The path for the prosecution of 76-year-old Luigi Ventura was cleared after the Vatican lifted his immunity in July 2019. His trial in absentia started on Nov. 10. He was not present for the verdict. The sentence imposed Wednesday was more lenient than the 10 months the prosecution had sought. Five men alleged that they had suffered Ventura’s “hands on the buttocks” during his public diplomatic duties in France. The case erupted in February 2019 amid multiple sex scandals affecting the Catholic Church. Ventura has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. Sexual assault is punishable in France by up to five years’ imprisonment and fines in France. The former envoy had produced a doctor’s note saying it was too dangerous for him to travel from Rome to Paris for the trial amid France’s resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic.
