IT'S a grudge match 12 years in the making. And just like at the 2010 World Cup, one of these nations will be going home. 4 4 That year in South Africa, Luis Suarez's outrageous, blatant, 120th-minute handball denied Ghana a last-gasp winner with a spot in the semi final at stake. The Uruguay star was sent-off and Ghana awarded a penalty - missed by Asamoah Gyan. The South Americans eked their way into the last-four on spot kicks in a cruel blow for Ghana, who would have become the first African side to ever reach a World Cup semi final. Now they meet again, this time in the final round of group fixtures - and only one can progress to the knockout stage. Facebook was not able to detect the vast majority of advertisements that explicitly called for violence against or killing of US election workers ahead of the midterms, a new investigation reveals. The probe tested Facebook, YouTube and TikTok for their ability to flag ads that contained ten real-life examples of death threats issues against election workers - including statements that people would be killed, hanged or executed and that children would be molested.  TikTok and YouTube suspended the accounts that had been set up to submit the ads. But Meta-owned Facebook approved nine out of ten English-language death threats for publication and six out of ten Spanish-language death threats - 75% of the total ads that the group submitted for publication. 'It’s incredibly alarming that Facebook approved ads threatening election workers with violence, lynching and killing – amidst growing real-life threats against these workers,' said Rosie Sharpe, investigator at Global Witness, which partnered with New York University Tandon School of Engineering's Cybersecurity for Democracy (C4D) team on the research.  Facebook was not able to detect the vast majority of advertisements that...

As a historian, I have often written about the idea of a ‘nation in arms’. The United States was forged not just by its Declaration of Independence, but by its victory — after an eight-year war — over George III. It was the revolutionary wars from 1793 to 1815 that turned ‘peasants into Frenchmen’, as the phrase goes. Modern Italy and Germany, too, became nations through bloody wars. And while British national identity was forged in much earlier times, we still define ourselves partly in terms of battle. Each time we sing the national anthem, for instance, we ask God to send our monarch not only happy and glorious but, first and foremost, victorious. And yet, with the shrinking physical size of modern armies, and with recent wars fought in far-flung lands such as Iraq and Afghanistan, we have grown distant from the experience of a people’s war, in which all participate, all make sacrifices. Ukraine has proved that such a war still exists. And now I have seen it for myself. NIALL FERGUSON: We have grown distant from the...

Ever wondered what your dog is thinking when it gazes at the TV, seemingly fascinated by the News At Ten?  Scientists have discovered that your pooch probably isn't focused on Huw Edwards specifically, but more what the people on screen are doing. Study dogs at Emory University in Georgia, USA had their brains scanned by an MRI machine while watching a half-hour video of stimulating content. This included clips of dogs running around, humans interacting with each other,  vehicles passing by, and a cat in a house. Data from the MRI was fed into an artificial intelligence (AI) called Ivis, which correlated brain activity with whether an action or object was shown on screen. Results showed that dogs are vastly more visually attuned to actions in their environment, rather than who or what is performing those actions. Female business owners in Chicago are planning to move out of the crime-ridden downtown and take their businesses to the suburbs after a spree of lawlessness. Teresa Ging, who owns a bakery in the city, said she feels like a ‘sitting duck’ in the area after she was forced to confront a man who tried to steal a purse. Her store, Sugar Bliss on South Wabash Avenue in Chicago, was targeted by the lone male on at around 10.20am on Friday. He vandalized her countertop before brazenly taking a bag as she was having a meeting – but she grabbed it back before calling police. She also addressed her concerned to Alderman Brendan Reilly but has yet to receive a response from them. Speaking to CBS, Ging said: ‘We’re basically sitting ducks. He came in the front door of our store and then came around to the cash...
Russia’s Defense Ministry has a new excuse for why it is faltering in the war in Ukraine: Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed—without providing evidence—that Russian forces are being careful to avoid civilian casualties, which he says is slowing down their progress. “Every effort is being done to prevent civilian casualties. It certainly slows down the advance,” Shoigu told a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Wednesday, according to TASS. “But we are doing it on purpose.” Russian forces, however, have been hitting Ukrainian civilians from the beginning of the war, which Wednesday reached its six-month mark. In the early days of the war, Russia hit a maternity hospital, killing at least one mother and baby. Since, Russia has hit playgrounds, theaters clearly marked as safeguarding children, office and apartment buildings, a shopping mall. Moscow has repeatedly denied it was behind the attacks, and has instead claimed it was “fake news,” or that the people dying from the attacks were crisis actors. Russia has even tried to place blame on Ukrainians and accused them of attacking their own people....
