SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea appeared to have conducted artillery firing drills on Sunday, South Korea said, days after the United States deployed sophisticated fighter jets to South Korea for joint training. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that it detected multiple trajectories presumed to be North Korean artillery on Sunday afternoon. It said South Korea’s military maintained a firm readiness in close coordination with the United States. South Korea’s presidential office said the suspected launches occurred off the North’s west coast. It said presidential national security director Kim Sung-han reviewed South Korean military readiness and that his office closely monitors possible additional launches by North Korea. This year, North Korea has carried out an unusually large number of weapons tests, including nuclear-capable missiles that place both the U.S. mainland and its allies including South Korea and Japan with striking distance. Some experts say North Korea attempts to perfect its weapons technology and boost its bargaining chip in future negotiations with the United States to win sanctions relief or security guarantees. ...

The is the moment a Chicago cop was shot in the neck by a serial-criminal and Porsche thief who hid a gun in his crotch and fired 50 rounds at officers from the backseat of a squad car. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability released the chilling bodycam footage on Thursday showing Lovelle Jordan, 27, shooting three officers on arrival at a station in the West Side on July 30, 2020. Margarito Lopez Jr. had been threatening suicide with a butcher knife to his neck for nearly 10 minutes when he suddenly stood and took a few steps toward the line of Los Angeles police officers in front of him. The officers had been trying to calm the troubled man in bursts of English and Spanish, according to police video from the encounter. They kept their distance while trying to talk Lopez out of harming himself. They lined up behind a barrier they’d created with their patrol cars. And they brought out a projectile launcher as a “less lethal” option in the event they needed to use force. Lopez stood on the sidewalk and slowly began to turn away. Then the officers opened fire with the projectile weapon — and their handguns. He crumpled to the ground, dead at 22. The officers’ decision shocked Lopez’s sister and others watching on the street. “They could have done so many other things,” Sonia Lopez said in a recent interview with The Times. “They didn’t even try to see if something else would work.”...

A Long Island man has been convicted for attempting to kill four Nassau County police officers during a traffic stop. Duane Costa, age 37, of Uniondale, was found guilty on Thursday, Dec. 16 of four counts of attempted murder and other charges in connection with the 2018 stop, said Acting Nassau County District Attorney Joyce Smith. “Duane Costa deliberately fired multiple rounds at four police officers with the clear intention to end their lives," said Smith. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Actor Alec Baldwin has been ordered to turn over his phone to detectives in the ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a New Mexico film set in October. A Santa Fe Magistrate Court judge Thursday approved a search warrant which requires Baldwin to hand his iPhone over to Santa Fe County Sheriff’s investigators. According to the warrant obtained by CBSLA, sheriff’s investigators seek to look at Baldwin’s texts, emails, photos, movies, browser history and contacts. On the afternoon of Oct. 21, on the set of the Western “Rust,” just outside Santa Fe, a single live round from a Pietta Colt .45 revolver fired by Baldwin struck and killed the 42-year-old Hutchins and wounded the film’s director, 48-year-old Joel Souza. The 63-year-old Baldwin was inside a church building, sitting on a wooden pew, rehearsing unholstering his prop gun and pointing it at the camera when he fired it, according to a previous search warrant filed by Santa Fe County Sheriff’s investigators. Responding borough officers -- backed up by colleagues from surrounding towns -- quickly took Knoll into custody. Police asked area residents to temporarily remain sheltered in place while the arrest was made and the house was cleared. After obtaining a search warrant, detectives did a more thorough search and found an assault rifle, eight high‐capacity magazines and five handguns, including the .22-caliber handgun he used outside, Cleary said.
