Dear Amy: I have a 20-year-old daughter. I adore her. We have a great relationship. She lives with her boyfriend and his family. Amy Dickinson  When COVID-19 hit, I was very cautious, as I have conditions that make me high risk for serious infection. As the vaccines became available, I was so relieved, and we all got vaccinated. A couple of days before Christmas, my daughter became quite ill and called my wife to take her to the ER. She tested positive for COVID but was able to go back home that night. The next day she sent a text to my wife: “By the way, I am not vaccinated and never will be.” Months previously, she had said she was vaccinated. She continued to visit us and even her grandfather, who was in a nursing home. I emailed her, telling her how disappointed I was with her, how her actions endangered me and her grandfather, and how upset I was with her deceit and recklessness. DEAR MISS MANNERS: Our preacher’s wife offered to contribute money to our household grocery budget. We live fairly comfortably on our combined Social Security checks, plus a nice little pension. I thanked her and told her truthfully that we have everything we need. In this morning’s mail, we received a check for $500. She wrote in a note that another friend had given her the money to pass on to us, just for the fun of doing an anonymous good deed. Of course, we will immediately send a thank-you note back to the intermediary. Is there anything else we can do? This is just shrimp instead of mac and cheese, but it is a lot of money. Lawyer Gib van Ert said the judge presiding over the case, and not Canada’s justice minister, must decide whether the US had jurisdiction to bring its fraud case against Meng. “It’s not a matter that you may leave to someone else. It is a legal determination. It is a question you must answer,” lawyer Gib van Ert told Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, as he pressed the case that the US has no right to prosecute Meng under international law, and Holmes must therefore throw out the bid for her extradition to New York.
