The letters are called the “Royal Cypher” and they give any eagle-eyed onlookers a subtle clue as to when the post box was erected. If you find a postbox that has the letters “ER” on then you can usually tell it is from within the past 70 years. The Queen took to the throne in 1952 so any new post...

A climate activist who died after setting himself on fire in front of the Supreme Court on Earth Day is a buddhist who hinted at his future self-immolation with a fire emoji under a Facebook post from 2020. Wynn Bruce, 50, of Boulder, Colorado, lit himself on fire on the court's plaza at around 6.30pm Friday. He suffered critical burns and was pronounced dead at a local hospital on Saturday. On October 30, 2020, he shared a link to an online class on climate change offered by edX, a free online course platform created by Harvard and MIT.  Last April, he went back and commented: '4-1-1 4/22/2022,' along with a fire emoji.  Surveillance footage of the immediate aftermath of the fire show police officers as they attempt to calm Bruce, who can be heard screaming in the background.   Police are still investigating a motive, but a Buddhist priest from Boulder took to Twitter to clarify that Bruce's death was not a suicide, but a 'deeply fearless act of compassion.' After Matthew Jaurequi lost his footing on an icy trail and began to slide, his friend tried to grab him. Both hikers coasted about 150 feet down from Icehouse Saddle near Mount Baldy on Tuesday, losing their cellphones during the precipitous descent, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Coming to rest near a tree, they had no way to call for help — until they spotted a phone lying in the snow, said Doug Brimmer, a deputy pilot with the Sheriff’s Department. It had 1% battery — enough to dial 911. The phone, it turned out, had been there since last week, after another hiker lost it in a similar tumble. Jaurequi, 38, was the fourth hiker rescued from the area in a week, Brimmer said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by SB Sheriff’s Aviation (@sbcsdaviation) Typically, rescues are more common in the Mount Baldy summit area. But recent snowfall on Icehouse Canyon, southeast of Baldy’s mighty peak, has created a slippery trap. “The trail turns into a little ice chute,”...
(CNN)US Border Patrol is working to reunite with their family two young girls found Tuesday wandering near Arizona's border with Mexico. Two agents found the sisters -- who are 4 and 6 years old -- alone in a marshy area along the Colorado River in Yuma. The area, south of Morelos Dam, "is an often-used crossing point by unaccompanied migrant juveniles," US Border Patrol Yuma Sector said in a post on its Facebook page. "A Yuma Sector agent, concerned about their safety, quickly approached the young girls, and escorted them to safer terrain," the post said, adding that the girls had a note that contained contact information for their tia, or aunt. "The girls were taken into custody and attempts will be made to reunite them with family," the post said. Why so many kids cross the border aloneBorder Patrol's Yuma Sector did not detail what would happen to the girls next. However, based on similar past cases, they will first be held in US Customs and Border Protection custody before being transferred to shelters run by the US Department...

Denver has a new voice offering old takes on pot. Before the Denver Gazette launched on September 14, we anticipated that the digital news source, backed by billionaire conservative Phil Anschutz, would continue the streak of weed-bashing exhibited by Anschutz's Colorado Springs Gazette. The Gazette's reputation of hating the plant was earned through years of questionable editorial decisions, dating back to a 2015 series of articles co-authored by Christine Tatum, the wife of Dr. Christian Thurstone, one of Colorado's most prominent physicians to oppose recreational pot legalization. (The series disclosed Tatum's relationship with Thurstone, but didn't point out that she herself was a longtime opponent of marijuana who once suggested that the Boston Marathon bombing and Columbine High School killings were both linked to marijuana use.) Since then, the Colorado Springs Gazette has continued to be the state's most prominent anti-marijuana media voice.Related Stories Phil Anschutz's Denver Gazette: Inside Billionaire's News Site Ex-Post Owner Dean Singleton on Denver Gazette, Colorado Sun Parents Take Aim at High-Potency THC Products as Teen Dabbing Rises Marijuana Deals Near YouBefore the Denver Gazette debuted, publisher and...

Detroit Lions superstar quarterback Matthew Stafford has been placed on the league’s coronavirus list. Ian Rapoport tweeted the news Saturday, and Stafford is without a doubt the biggest name to appear on the list so far. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football) Being on the list doesn’t mean a player has coronavirus, but it does mean they’ll have to quarantine because they might have been near someone who had the virus. Mayor de Blasio and Council Speaker Corey Johnson are finalizing an $87 billion budget deal that would avoid municipal layoffs while slicing $1 billion from the Police Department’s budget through transfers and spending cuts, The Post has learned. The agreement — which the City Council was being briefed on late Monday night — largely restores cuts Hizzoner made to summer youth employment programs, counselors for high needs schools and tuition aid for low-income City University students. But, it also keeps the bulk of the other spending cuts proposed by de Blasio in April intact as officials attempt to navigate the Big Apple’s estimated $9 billion deficit, which was caused by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent economic shutdown. Hizzoner’s April budget — when the deficit was estimated to be just $7 billion — continued the city’s tradition of sparing the NYPD from the budget ax even during tough times. Just weeks later, the brutal in-custody police death of George Floyd in Minneapolis rocketed across social media, sending tens-of-thousands New Yorkers to the street in protest — the first...
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The statewide total of COVID-19 infections in New Mexico neared 11,000 on Wednesday as health officials reported an additional 156 positive tests and four more deaths. The latest cases come as the state eases restrictions on some segments of the economy, including allowing breweries, restaurants, gyms and salons to open at limited capacities. Members of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other organizations have been putting pressure on Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to consider allowing veterans' posts to open. A group of about 20 members of private clubs and fraternal orders gathered outside the shuttered state Capitol on Wednesday to urge the governor to lift the restrictions on their organizations from the COVID-19 closure order. Windy Townsend, the canteen manager of VFW Post 7686 in Alamogordo, recently wrote to Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, to consider letting her post open. Townsend explained that the posts are places where veterans feel safe and can find resources such as help with utility bills and food bank items. “The virus is a very real crisis. But...
A rare hybrid hawksbill-green sea turtle is taking part in a long-distance online “race” following the migration of sea turtles over three months. The turtle, known as Maisy and who was rehabilitated at the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital, has a satellite tracking transmitter attached to its shell and has been released. The Sea Turtle Conservancy organizes the annual project called the Tour de Turtles, which is intended to raise awareness about sea turtles and threats to their survival. Members of the public can monitor competitors’ progress online. Maisy was suffering from fibropapillomatosis, a herpes-like virus affecting sea turtles around the world, when it was rescued almost a year ago off the Lower Keys, according to The Associated Press. The turtle received multiple treatments at the hospital, including antibiotics and the removal of several tumors. The reptile is apparently the first of nine hard-shell turtles to be fitted with a satellite transmitter. The others will be released off Florida by the end of July, according to Dan Evans, a senior research biologist with the Sea Turtle Conservancy. “Beyond the educational aspect...
Activists are planning on sleeping outside City Hall overnight Tuesday to demand $1 billion in cuts from the NYPD’s nearly $6 billion budget. Organizers with the groups VOCAL-NY and New York Communities for Change said they are ready to camp out through June 30, the day before the City Council’s deadline to approve the 2021 fiscal year budget. “The occupation is planning on staying here until June 30th, calling for at least $1 billion [in cuts] and to reinvest the money into communities,” said VOCAL-NY director of organizing Jawanza Williams in a statement to The Post. “If the cuts aren’t included in the budget, there is no telling what the masses of people who have been mobilized by this movement will do.” About 100 anti-cop protesters occupied a grassy area outside City Hall Park, off of Center Street, at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday night, equipped with water, hand sanitizer and some hammocks. They passed out pizzas, played music and a handful of people broke into an experimental dance at one point. Some put out calls on social media asking...
Protesters attempted to tear down a statue of Andrew Jackson in a park just outside the White House on Monday night. Photos from Lafayette Square in Washington D.C. show a rope tied around the statue of Jackson with the word “Killer” spray-painted on the base of the sculpture. U.S. Park and D.C. police responded to the green space and reportedly used some type of chemical irritant to disperse the crowd of protesters. Protesters Monday night also tried to set up an autonomous zone outside of the White House — similar to Seattle’s so-called Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone. Demonstrators used barricades to build the perimeter around what they called “BHAZ” — Black House Autonomous Zone — before police disrupted their efforts and breached the area. Amid the tense confrontation between police and protesters, the US Secret Service also asked the reporters to leave the White House, Fox News reported. It wasn’t immediately clear why the request was made. Filed under andrew jackson ,  protests ,  washington dc ,  6/22/20 Share this article: Share this: Facebook Twitter Flipboard WhatsApp Email...
A California woman has filed a $10 million claim against the LAPD after she was shot in the head with a rubber bullet meant for George Floyd protesters — leaving her with a traumatic brain injury, according to reports. Single mom Yasmine Morales, 26, was driving to Target to buy a birthday present for her son on May 30 when she stopped at an intersection near a George Floyd rally, her attorney told KCAL9. While stopped, an officer in a patrol vehicle fired unannounced through her open car window, fracturing her skull and causing a brain bleed that has left her unable to walk without assistance, the attorney, Neama Rahmani, told the station. “This has dramatically altered the course of her life,” the attorney insisted, calling Morales a “single mom just trying to make it just like the rest of us.” “Someone innocent like this should not suffer at the hands of law enforcement,” Rahmani told KCAL9. The officer’s actions were “not tactical police work so much as a drive-by shooting,” Rahmani told the Los Angeles Daily News. “There’s no defense...
