Raging forest fires in Northern California claimed two more lives as the death toll rose to four from what has become the state's largest blaze brought on by blistering heat and bone-dry conditions, authorities said Tuesday. The Siskiyou County Sheriff said two bodies were found in separate residences on Monday along Route 96, one of the only roads in and out of the area. On Sunday, first responders found the first two bodies inside a burned-out vehicle inside a gated driveway of a home near the Klamath River. Flames overtook the vehicle before they could escape. 'It's really tragic when a fire gets up and moves this fast and basically takes out a community. And that's what happened in the Klamath River area,' Mike Lindbery, a spokesman with the fire's incident management team, said Tuesday. CBS News wrapped its reporting about the death of Al Qaeda leader Ayman Al Zawahiri by reminding viewers those who participated in or planned the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks are now all either dead or in jail. Meanwhile, the site of the most devastating terror attack in U.S. history is thriving. Network anchor John Dickerson reported the news of Zawahiri’s death via drone strike. After some analysis, he wrapped the report and sent CBC affiliates across the country back to their regularly scheduled programming. First, he offered a reminder: We leave you with a look at lower Manhattan and One World Trade Center. All those that plotted the attack are either dead or captured. One World Trade stands as the tallest building in the western hemisphere. A reminder of the resilience of New York City and the American people. As he spoke, CBS shared the beauty of Manhattan’s skyline with One World Trade towering magnificently 1,792 feet in the sky. While New York recovered from 9/11, as Dickerson noted, those who planned and carried out the attack have been destroyed. Zawahiri,...
The largest wildland fire recorded this year in California has turned fatal as the inferno exploded in size and emblazed its way through Klamath National Forest. Two people have been found dead in their car in the town of Klamath River, California, amid the apocalyptic scenes as thousands of homes were evacuated, Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue confirmed.  It's believed that the two people who tragically died were attempting to flee the fast-moving flames ripping through the state's dry terrain. The threatening McKinney blaze - which is now engulfing 80 squared miles of dry tinderbox wildland in the area - has been spurred on by gusty winds and lightening strikes.  Firefighters are working tirelessly to put out the unpredictable blaze, which began on Friday afternoon - but it is currently zero per cent contained.  The roaring inferno threatening wildlife and homes in California has now become fatal - after two people were found dead in a car in their driveway The threatening blaze is now engulfing 80 squared miles of dry tinderbox wildland in the area as firefighters work tirelessly to...
(CNN)As the death toll in flood-stricken areas of Kentucky continues to rise, rescue workers and officials are focused on recovering missing people in several counties and coordinating vital aid for thousands of displaced residents. At least 28 people, including four children, have died due to severe flooding that struck parts of Kentucky last week, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Sunday. The governor told NBC's "Meet the Press" that he believes recovery crews are "going to be finding bodies for weeks, many of them swept hundreds of yards, maybe a quarter-mile plus from where they were last."While reading a breakdown of those killed in each county during a news conference Sunday, Beshear became visibly emotional when he reached the four children dead in Knott County, where 15 people have been found dead. A car went through two fences and ended up in a community pool where 20 adults and children were swimming Wednesday night in the Central Valley city of Sanger. The car’s two occupants were rescued by lifeguards, and nobody else was injured, the fire chief told the Fresno Bee. The crash happened around 8:45 p.m. The Honda Civic was on a street that makes a 90-degree right turn at the community center — but the driver continued straight, going across the sidewalk, through a chain-link fence, between two palm trees on the lawn and then through another fence that surrounds the pool. The car went into the pool’s deep end, and most of the swimmers were in the shallow end, the fire chief told the Bee. One of the women in the car was taken to a hospital after she was rescued. The driver is suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Greg Abbott accused President Joe Biden of enticing migrants to make the dangerous trip across the southern border due to lax immigration policies after Vice President Kamala Harris said the Texas governor is playing politics after 53 migrants died in a smuggling incident. 'Because of the way that the Biden administration is not enforcing the immigration laws, it's attracting people and enticing people to make this very dangerous trek, causing them to lose their lives,' the Texas governor said during a press conference on Wednesday. 'I urge the president: Stop the loss of lives,' he said. 'You have the ability to stop people from losing their lives if you make it clear that nobody can come across illegally.' 'There's a perfectly legal way that people can immigrate to the United States of America. It's that legal pathway, Mr. President, that you must insist upon – and if you do that, you will have a role in reducing the loss of life.' The comments came two days after an abandoned tractor trailer was found on the outskirts of San Antonio, Texas...

Four years and six days before a fourth-grade class was gunned down at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Rhonda Hart lost her teenage daughter, Kimberly Vaughan, in a shooting at a high school about 300 miles east. She’s a member of a tragic, steadily growing network: parents of children who were killed in mass shootings. “We call it, unofficially, the Dead Kid Club,” she said. So when she heard the news of yet another school shooting in Texas, Hart knew better than most what that will mean for the 19 families now missing young members. “If you look up the cycle of grief, it’s supposed to go around in a circle: denial, anger, whatever. But that circle is B.S.,” she said. “It’s not so much a circle as a pinball machine. They’re going to be bouncing around from all these different emotions. They’re going to think they’re fine, and then one little incident will set them off.” For Hart, one such incident came when she pulled up at the grocery store less than a year after her daughter’s death...

Two people were killed and three others were taken to a hospital with injuries after a gunfight broke out between two groups at a bustling Houston flea market, where thousands of people were shopping on a busy Sunday.  The  shooting at the open-air market came just hours after a gunman opened fire at a California church, killing one, and a day after a teenager targeted black shoppers at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing 10.  In Houston, the Sunday afternoon incident arose from an 'altercation' that involved at least two guns and all five of the people, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. He said no 'innocent bystanders' were injured. No arrests have been made, but investigators believe one of the people hospitalized was among those who opened fire and two more suspected shooters were detained at the scene and were questioned, a sheriff's deputy told KTRK-TV.   Family members identified one of the victims who died as 29-year-old Juan Romero, who was at the flea market to enjoy his Sunday, just like any other weekend, his sister Yeraldi Romero...

More than 100 rounds were shot as terrified late-night revelers fled the scene. One of the men killed was a friend of Smiley Martin. Hours before the shooting, the two had filmed a video at an apartment complex in rival territory in which they 'discussed going to downtown Sacramento while armed to loiter outside nightclubs,' prosecutors say. On Wednesday’s “CNN Newsroom,” Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) refused to walk back his previous calls for cutting down on police and said that “there are other approaches to respond to mental health crises so someone doesn’t end up dead when they shouldn’t end up dead. There are other ways to respond to the variety of issues that are happening in our community.” Host Dana Bash brought up Bowman’s previous desire to see a “dramatic reduction” in police and asked, “With the volume of crime that we’ve seen, even since we had that conversation less than two years ago, do you still think that’s appropriate?” Bowman responded, “Police are one part of the solution. They are not the only part of the solution. And police cannot work in silos and in isolation. They have to work with education officials, with clergy, with workforce development, and with mental health professionals as well. We have to do a better job of identifying young people who are at risk, people who are at risk, whether it’s in the education system or whether it’s through...
