WEST BRIDGEWATER (CBS) — Susan Chartier was caught by surprise when she was opening her mail last spring. “I received a letter that was addressed to someone else but with my address on it and it came from the Department of Unemployment,” she told WBZ-TV’s I-Team. She added that the letter described a maximum benefit of more than $15,000. Susan assumed it was a simple mistake until she went to her mailbox the next day. “I received two more letters with two different people,” she said, explaining that they were still addressed to her home. Since Susan and her husband built the home decades ago and have been the only occupants, she was concerned that she was a victim of identity theft. Turns out, Susan was not a victim, but thought people could be using her address to collect benefits they may not be entitled to, so she contacted the state about the potential fraud. “I was told that I could not report the fraud because it was not in my name,” she said. “I really thought that that was...

The US has temporarily halted avocado shipments from a violence-ridden Mexican state after an American health inspector was threatened, Mexico's agriculture ministry said Saturday. The abrupt suspension of the key guacamole ingredient - which came a day ahead of this year's Super Bowl - came after a health official received a threatening call to his cell phone, the  Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development said in a statement. The health worker had been carrying out an inspection in Uruapan, a city in Michoacán, a gang-plagued region that's among Mexico's deadliest states. It has for decades been used as a drug-trafficking hub and the situation has only worsened amid frequent armed struggles for power between rival cartels.  Health officials did not disclose the specific nature of the threat, but it was serious enough to pause exports pending the results of an investigation by the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and and Department of Agriculture, the statement said. In the past six weeks, Michoacán have exported more than 135 thousand tons of avocados to the US, the Mexican government said. The state...

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) on Tuesday played a threatening voicemail that she received from an apparent supporter of Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), whom she has been feuding with for the last several days. At a press event, Omar again condemned Boebert for likening her to a suicide bomber, and then played audio of the voicemail that she received shortly after her ill-fated call with Boebert earlier this week. "I would love the opportunity to take you off the face of the f*cking Earth, you Muslim piece of sh*t jihadist," the caller said. "We know what you are, you're a f*cking traitor. You will not live much longer, I can almost guarantee you that." Last week, unearthed video showed Boebert likening Omar to a suicide bomber in front of cheering supporters, while also labeling Omar as a member of the "jihad squad." Paul Gosar (R-AZ) earlier this month posting a cartoon on social...

Atlanta's mayor reminded the public to call the police when they witness a crime instead of scrambling for their phones to record the incident. HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut details in a new book how aid from top Republicans — including strategist Karl Rove — helped him win reelection against a more left-leaning Democrat and a Republican. Lieberman ran as an independent in 2006 after losing the Democratic primary to now-Gov. Ned Lamont, who unlike Lieberman opposed the Iraq War. Lieberman writes in his book “The Centrist Solution,” scheduled to be released on Tuesday, that Rove called him on the day of the primary and offered his help in the tight race, the Hartford Courant reported. The former senator quotes Rove, then-President George W. Bush’s top strategist, as saying “the ‘Boss’ asked me to call you … he knows that the political problems you are having are because you have stayed strong on the war in Iraq. So, he wanted me to tell you that if you lose today and run in November, we will help you in any way we can.” Lieberman, 79, also writes about help from former U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, another prominent Republican and...

But as CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff reported Tuesday, treatment experts in New York are not happy with how some of that money is being spent. President Biden has not ruled out requiring military personnel to get a COVID-19 vaccine, saying it will be a "tough call." Biden has said that when it comes to the military, he will leave it to the Armed Forces to decide, but that he hasn’t ruled out requiring the vaccine. "I’m not saying I won’t," Biden told "The Today Show" on Friday. "I think you’re going to see more and more of them getting it. Police are attempting to untangle a shooting and a reporting kidnapping while getting little help from the victims in Fairfield County. The incidents began when Bridgeport Police received a call around 11 p.m., Sunday, March 7, reporting a woman had shown up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to her back, said Scott Appleby, director of emergency management. The woman told officers she was shot at the P.T. Barnum Apartments, Appleby said. Her wounds were considered non-life-threatening. As officers investigated, Appleby said they learned the two incidents may be linked, but the investigation was "very active," and those involved "were not cooperating."
