By Keith Laing | Bloomberg Traffic fatalities on US roads declined in the second quarter, halting an almost two-year rise even as Americans are driving more. Some 10,590 people died in car crashes from April through June, down 4.9% from the same period in 2021, according to estimates released Monday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Fatalities had been increasing since the third quarter of 2020. “Although it is heartening to see a projected decline in roadway deaths in recent months, the number of people dying on roads in this country remains a crisis,” Ann Carlson, NHTSA’s acting administrator, said in a statement. The victim, identified as Inaya Alston, was unrestrained in the front car seat at the time of the crash on Sunday August 28, but she did not die from her injuries until August 31.  The crash occurred just before 6:30am at Camino Al Norte and Edna Crane Avenue, according to court documents, when Kazjah Dillon, 24, smashed her car into the 'Las Palmares' neighborhood sign at Edna Crane. A one-year-old child also in the car, who was also not fastened in, is thought to have been seriously injured. New York (CNN business)Investors are getting spooked that the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes could damage the US economy (just look at Tuesday's selloff). One area of growing concern: housing. Interest rate hikes can lead to higher mortgage rates, which could cause people to think twice about buying a home.So far, sales are slipping, while prices are holding steady. But some economists warn continued historic rate hikes by the Fed could risk crashing the housing market, underscoring the difficult task ahead for the central bank. What's happening: According to Tuesday's Consumer Price Index report, housing costs rose 0.7% in August and are up 6.2% year-over-year, the largest increase since 1991. That increase was largely responsible for August's higher-than-expected pace of inflation. Combined with a tight labor market, those high prices give the Fed reason to continue to go hard at its policy meeting next week and beyond, Marvin Loh, senior strategist at State Street, told me. Read MoreThe Fed needs to see housing costs ease by about half a percentage point to reach its ultimate inflation goal, Loh added. The job won't be easy....

In a shock move, a judge in upstate New York has rejected a year-old plea agreement that let a limo company operator avoid prison time for his role in a crash that killed 20 people.  The legal reversal on Wednesday in Schoharie drew applause from victims' relatives, and plunged limo boss Nauman Hussain into legal uncertainty after he pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide. State Supreme Court Justice Peter Lynch, who was not presiding over the case when the deal was reached last September in Hussain's case, called the agreement 'fundamentally flawed.' It would have spared Hussain prison time, angering the families of the people killed when brake failure sent a stretch limo full of birthday revelers hurtling down a hill in 2018. The ICU nurse who killed six people in a horrific fiery crash in LA earlier this month when she blew through a red light at 90mph suffered a 'frightening' mental collapse in the days leading up to the incident, it has been revealed. The revelation concerning the murder charges currently leveled at Nicole Linton, 37, came in the form of a filing from the LA nurse's defense attorneys, who insist their client suffered an 'apparent lapse of consciousness' at the time of the crash. Obtained by The LA Times, the filing offers a detailed narrative of the suspect's diminishing mental state in the buildup to the incident, which claimed the lives of a pregnant mother, her unborn child and one-year-old son, and four others. Linton, who is from Texas, is currently in custody on the six murder charges, which pertain to the five people as well as the unborn child. She is being held without bail, due to prosecutors belief that she is a flight risk and a danger to the community. The filing argues that Linton has 'no recollection of the events that...

House prices could fall by up to 20 percent next year if there's a recession, experts warn - and property in some areas of the country is overvalued by as much as 72 percent.  Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody's Analytics, was pessimistic about the housing market in May, but he has now made his forecasts even more bleak, Fortune reported on Wednesday. It comes amid ongoing arguments over whether the US is already in a recession, with the country recording two consecutive quarters of negative growth - the traditional definition of such a slump.   The news is particularly dire for people who have purchased homes in what Fortune terms 'bubbly' markets, such as Boise, Las Vegas and Phoenix. The most over-valued areas are largely in the Mountain West and Sunbelt. Boise, Idaho - which saw house prices skyrocket during the pandemic, as droves swapped pricey cities in the Bay Area and wider California for the buzzing Idaho city - is the most overvalued area, Zandi said. Boise, where the current average house is worth $526,050 according to Zillow, is almost 72...

A Los Angeles fire chief slammed a former captain and said he 'tarnished' his image after he took photos of NBA star Kobe Bryant's body at the helicopter crash site and returned his work laptop without a hard drive. Bryant's widow, Vanessa, is suing the LA County fire department and the sheriff's office for invasion of privacy after the images of the January 2020 crash were shared by officers. Acting fire chief Anthony Marrone testified on Monday that he never told former Capt. Brian Jordan to take photos of the helicopter crash site that left eight dead, including the NBA star and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, according to Law & Order. Marrone also admitted to the court that he is 'alarmed' he doesn't know where Capt. Jordan's hard drive is stored.   'As you sit here today, you have no idea where the hard drive is?' Jerry Jackson, an attorney representing Christopher Chester, whose wife and daughter died in the crash, asked Marrone. 'No I don't,' the acting fire chief answered. Jackson responded, 'Does that alarm you?' 'Yes it does,' Marrone...
A four-time Olympian who survived a fiery plane crash with her husband and niece says she thought they were going to die but had 'no time to be scared' as the aircraft suddenly took a nosedive and plummeted to the ground.  Miraculously, all three of them - including their beloved golden retriever puppy - survived the horrific crash when their plane went down near a Michigan airport last month. Survivors Chirine Njeim, 37,  who represented Lebanon in both the Summer and Winter Olympics, her pilot husband, Ronny Kamal, 44, and their 17-year-old niece, Siena Kamal, spoke out for the first time Tuesday morning on Good Morning America (GMA) where they recounted terrifying moments and how they narrowly escaped tragedy. 'The world sort of slowed down then and those moments felt a little bit like an eternity,' Kamal told GMA.  Kamal has 26 years of aviation experience but said on Tuesday that he still doesn't know what caused the single-engine Beechcraft A36 to crash shortly after takeoff from Ray Community Airport in Ray Township on July 24.  Kamal and his wife Njeim said that in...

Both planes had been on their final approaches to the airport when they collided approximately 200 feet in the air. One Cessna careened into an aircraft hangar off the runway and the other plane smashed into a grassy field nearby. Although the Watsonville airport is without a traffic control tower, the pilots involved were reportedly in communication via the common traffic advisory frequency. The smaller plane reportedly did not, however, have its transponder on, which would have otherwise enabled pilots to spot the aircraft on their displays. \u201cMultiple fatalities after mid-air plane crash at Watsonville airport. @nbcbayarea #SkyRanger over the scene. Scotland Yard chiefs face new concerns over their handling of a note detailing Princess Diana's fears she would be killed in a staged car accident. Diana voiced her fears to her lawyer, Lord Mishcon, in October 1995. She died in a car crash in Paris two years later alongside Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul. The mystery surrounding the note is revisited in a four-part documentary – Investigating Diana: Death In Paris – beginning tonight on Channel 4 to mark the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. After Diana's death, Lord Mishcon passed his contemporaneous typed account of their meeting to senior Metropolitan Police officers who put it in a safe. But the note was not passed to French authorities investigating her crash for six years. Diana's brother and sisters learned of its existence only more than a decade after it was written. Princes William and Harry were also left in the dark for a long time. There have even been suggestions of a mysterious addition to the note, which it has been claimed was designed to give cover to the...

The driver of an SUV crashed into the living room of a Huntington Beach house but didn’t injure the two people inside the home, a city official said Friday. The Huntington Beach Fire Department responded about 12:15 p.m. Thursday to reports of a vehicle crashing into the living room of a two-story single-family home, according to Jennifer Carey, the city’s public affairs manager. The house’s two occupants weren’t in the immediate area at the time of the crash and weren’t injured, Carey said. The driver of the SUV suffered minor, non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital. The city’s police and fire departments didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. The home’s owner, Edward Jollie, told CBS/Los Angeles that he got up to go to the bathroom moments before the vehicle came barreling into his house. He and his daughter were in the front room when the crash occurred. “I had to get up and go to the little boys’ room,” he said. “Two, three, four, five seconds after that I saw a car come...
A few days after the 2020 memorial for Kobe Bryant, the basketball star’s widow, Vanessa, was home watching TV with family when she learned that Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies had shared gruesome photos of the helicopter crash that killed her husband and the couple’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna. “I bolted out of the house,” Vanessa Bryant testified Friday in federal court in Los Angeles. Once she found a spot where her other three daughters could not hear her, she said, “I broke down and cried, and I wanted to run down the block and just scream.” Bryant, who repeatedly burst into tears on the witness stand, said she felt betrayed by deputies she had trusted to protect her family. “I expected them to have more compassion — respect,” Bryant testified. “My husband and my daughter deserve dignity.” Bryant’s appearance came on the eighth day of a trial in her federal lawsuit against L.A. County over graphic images of the crash scene that were taken and shared by sheriff’s deputies and firefighters. Chris Chester — whose wife, Sarah, and daughter, Payton,...

A Weymouth store got a violently fast remodel this week after a truck and car crashed through the front of the building.  The crash happened Thursday afternoon, Aug. 18, when a truck careened off the road and into a parked car in front of Lynn's Variety store on Washington Street, WCVB reported. The impact caused the truck and car to crash through the front of the building.  Reports said three people were inside when the crash happened, but none were hurt. Officials told the news station that the truck driver had a medical emergency and that caused him to swerve into the building.  The damage to the 915 Washington St. street store left the building structurally unsound, WCVB said. Engineers were working late Thursday to sure up the structure.  Police have not released an update on the man's condition.
UPDATE: A manhunt continued after a violent ex-con fled into the meadows near MetLife Stadium when police responding to a Route 3 traffic accident discovered that he'd been wanted on a parole violation, authorities said. Ali Scott, 35, of Newark, has spent nearly a dozen years in state prison combined during three separate stretches beginning in 2006, records show. He served nearly eight years for robbery from August 2010 to May 2018 and nearly two for vehicular homicide between 2007 and 2009. Scott was headed west on Route 3 in his brother's car Wednesday afternoon when a wheel popped off, Rutherford Police Chief John R. Russo said. After bouncing over the divider, the tire struck a vehicle on the eastbound side, the chief said. Responding officers quickly discovered an outstanding no-bail warrant, Russo said. They tried to take Scott into custody, but he bolted, running across the highway and into the marsh, the chief said. Lyndhurst police and a Bergen County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 unit assisted Rutherford police, who also sent up a drone, with no luck. Scott, who previously...
