Mushrooms are having a moment. Not only has the fungus turned into one of the summer's most surprising fashion trends, but ads for mushroom drinks, supplements, and face serums have been sprouting up on people's TikTok and Instagram feeds like their real-life counterparts. It also helps that the enigmatic nature of the mushrooms has captured the world's imagination like never before through the popular documentaries like Fantastic Fungi. Take mycelium, for example. This is a network of root-like fungal fibers responsible for connecting almost all plant life together. Now, they're even making their way to our stomachs in a way that might surprise you. Mycelium mushroom roots can be transformed into meat like substances that could radically change the alternative meat industry and provide sustainable, healthy protein for a rapidly growing population. Given the urgent need to create sustainable food products in a world rapidly coming to terms with climate disaster, fungi-based meats might not only have unique advantages over animals, but other plant-based meats too. That’s because a single strain of mycelium, grown the right way,...

New York (CNN Business)Lisa Altman used to take pride in being able to eat what she wanted without worrying much about the cost. When she was growing up, seconds weren't served and side dishes were rare. "My mom had a budget every week, and she stuck to it," she said. "As I got older and became more financially independent, having a full pantry and being able to eat what I wanted was a sign of success for me," she added. "It was very humbling to have to go from that situation to where we're at right now." Altman and her wife live in Austin, Texas with their three children. Recently, they've been relying mostly on one income. Their reduced earnings, coupled with inflation, have dealt a blow to their finances. And that has changed, radically, the way they eat. Altman is not alone in making big changes. President Joe Biden started a Democratic National Committee speech with a teachers union on Friday with eye-opening remarks. Pointing to a member of the crowd at the National Education Association, he said: 'You gotta say hi to me. We go back a long way. She was 12, I was 30.' The audience laughed before he said: 'This woman helped me get a lot done'.  Later in the remarks he said: 'I mean this from the bottom of my heart. Those of you who know me, no one ever doubts I mean what I say, the problem is I sometimes say all that I mean.' It was the start of speech in Washington D.C. where he attacked MAGA Republicans and called GOP leader Kevin McCarthy's 'Commitment to America' policy plan 'thin'.  The president also promised to veto a Republican abortion ban if it arrived at his desk and said the midterms are a choice between 'hope, unity, optimism' and 'division, fear, darkness'.  He celebrated gas prices being down $1.30 a gallon and re-upped his attacks on the use of assault weapons. AN AUSSIE dad has revealed his family's toilet routine, including using the same loo cloth for the last five years. The ever-growing climate change crisis has forced many to rethink their everyday choices - whilst some might stop running to Starbucks to buy takeaway coffee, others have chosen to walk rather than take an Uber to their destination. 4The Aussie dad shared his family's toilet routine on YouTubeCredit: YouTube 4According to him, not only does this save money and is eco-friendly, but the process is also simpleCredit: YouTube But some, like one dad from Australia, Patrick, have taken up more drastic measures, which see them sharing the same toilet cloth for half a decade. In order to use as little resources as possible and save water wherever they can, the Aussie family, who regularly upload videos on YouTube, have installed a composting toilet. This means that once the person is done with their business, they'll sprinkle some sawdust over what's inside the toilet and cover it with a wooden lid. Just as important, the dad noted in a video on...

About a fifth of the migrants being bussed from El Paso to New York allegedly want to travel to the Big Apple and are not being transported against their will.  Blake Barrow, CEO of the El Paso Rescue Mission charity, said his organization has been overwhelmed by the influx of migrants crossing the border illegally, but the immigrants have been more than happy to take up Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's offer to bus them to New York City.  'About 20% of them want to go to New York,' Barrow wrote in an open letter on Wednesday. 'The city has been chartering busses to New York to assist those desiring that destination.  'I am not aware of anyone being placed on a bus to New York who did not want to go there.'   A group of Venezuelans, who recently crossed to the U.S. from Mexico, walk together after receiving food and other aid from a good Samaritan on September 20, 2022 in El Paso, Texas
Vladimir Putin could not be clearer. 'I am not bluffing,' he said, in relation to his threat to go nuclear. But is he? And does it automatically follow that Armageddon would unfold if Putin launched the first nuclear bombs the world has seen since 1945? The good news is that Putin can't start World War III by simply jabbing a red button on his desk in the Kremlin. If he decides to launch an attack, the order has to go through at least three layers of checks put in place to prevent the accidental or unauthorised launch of nuclear missiles. Before reaching the nuclear silos, mobile launch sites and submarines, his command would go via three men: Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov and the head of the Russian nuclear rocket forces, Sergei Karakayev. Even after travelling down this chain of command, the launches would not follow instantly. Unless there has been a change in the standard protocols since Russia invaded Ukraine, there would be a 20-minute gap between each transmission from the 'nuclear football'...
The State Department suggests that the administration has been working to get to the 'root causes' of migration as the border crisis has more than quintupled under President Joe Biden's leadership. While Biden's administration focuses on what causes migrants to leave their home countries and come to the U.S., it has failed to implement policies aimed at stopping the flow of illegal immigration over the southern border. State Department spokesperson Ned Price, however, told Fox News on Wednesday that results cannot be achieved in short timelines – despite the nearly two-years of Biden's presidency. 'We have never been under any illusions, nor should anyone, that we can fully address the root causes overnight or over the course of a week or month,' Price said. He added: 'But this is something that we are working on, we're working on it as diligently as we can.' The claim comes after new figures were released this week showing that a new record was reached in August and more than 2 million migrants have illegally entered the country so far in Fiscal Year 2022....
The Chicago Bears regrouped Wednesday at Halas Hall from their Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers and began preparing for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. Along with quarterback Justin Fields’ comments about jump-starting the offense and a social media controversy, here are four things we learned from Bears coach Matt Eberflus and his players. 1. Lucas Patrick practiced without the cast he wore in the first two games. As he continued his recovery from surgery on his right hand, Patrick — whom the Bears signed in the offseason to be their center — wore a club on his hand in Weeks 1 and 2 that prevented him from snapping. So the Bears started Sam Mustipher at center and put Patrick in a right guard rotation with Teven Jenkins. But Patrick was spotted without the cast during the portion of practice open to the media, and he snapped a couple of times. If Patrick can snap the ball consistently, it raises the question of how the Bears will handle those two positions. Eberflus and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy...

Emily Ratajkowski fired back at Sara Foster after the actress slammed the Instagram influencer who claimed to have had an affair with Adam Levine last year.  After Sara took to TikTok to air her grievances with Sumner Stroh, the model who accused Adam of having an affair with her, Emily slammed the post and argued it was wrong to blame the 'other woman'. It comes after Emily's own four-year marriage to producer Sebastian Bear-McClard, 35, crumbled amid claims he was a 'serial cheater'.  The model hit out at criticism of Summer, 23, as 'sexism and classic misogyny' and said 'power dynamic is so skewed' because Adam, 43, is 'twice her age' and slammed his alleged behaviour as 'predatory and manipulative'. 'I'm going to try not to go the f**k off right now,' Emily, 31, said after playing a brief clip from Sara's original video. 'I just couldn't disagree more. President Joe Biden on Tuesday said Ron DeSantis should come visit Delaware as 'we have a beautiful shoreline' and defended criticism that the southern border has been overwhelmed by migrants under his watch.  The president gave a jovial response when asked about the Florida governor's decision to send migrants to his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach.  'He should come visit. We have a beautiful shoreline,' he offered to DeSantis, a Republican. Biden also defended the record number of migrants entering the United States under his presidency. U.S. authorities made more than 2 million immigration arrests along the southern border in the past 11 months, marking the first time that number has been reached. The president said the heavy influx of immigrants were people escaping authoritarian regimes in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua. 'There are fewer and fewer immigrants coming from Central America and from Mexico. It's a totally different circumstance. What's on my watch now is Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, and the ability to send them back to those states is not rational. You could send them back and have them —...
Outgoing Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney claimed on Monday night that a Republican colleague of hers called Donald Trump 'orange Jesus' even as he signed a form formally objecting to the ex-president's election loss. The ousted conservative Trump critic recalled it happening in the GOP cloak room hours before the former president's supporters stormed the US Capitol to stop lawmakers from certifying his defeat. 'I was working on my remarks, I was supposed to speak that day and there were sheets of paper laid out on the desks. And I asked one of the staffers in the cloakroom, "what are these sheets of paper?" Because members were coming in and signing them,' Cheney said. The staffer told her they were objection sheets for whoever wanted to sign up to oppose President Joe Biden's victory. Only one objection is required, but Cheney said 'there were so many who wanted to show they were objecting that they’d set up these sign-up sheets in the cloakroom.' 'As I was sitting there, a member came in and he signed his name on each one...

The Australian man who claims to be the secret love child of King Charles and Queen Camilla says he has 'a big hug' ready for fellow royal 'black sheep' Prince Harry. Simon Charles Dorante-Day also says the 'family' likeness his children bear to the Windsors are a daily reminder of the Queen and the sadness of her passing.  Mr Dorante-Day, 56, said that, as the son who was shunned by Charles from birth, he has a 'lot to talk about' with Harry. I didn’t think it was possible, but Donald Trump is more dangerous than ever. Last week, he warned America that if he’s indicted, we would face “problems... the likes of which perhaps we’ve never seen.” For a man who already incited one violent riot over his defeat in the 2020 election, a veiled threat of violence (nice democracy there—if you can keep it!) cannot be dismissed as a mere toothless bluff. But it gets (arguably) worse: Trump has gone full QAnon. Last Tuesday, Trump reposted a picture of himself on his social media platform Truth Social wearing a Q pin with the words “The Storm is Rising.” As the Associated Press explains, “In QAnon lore, the ‘storm’ refers to Trump’s final victory, when supposedly he will regain power and his opponents will be tried, and potentially executed, on live television.” Then, at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, this weekend, Trump’s campaign played a song that was eerily similar to the QAnon song “Wwg1wga,” an abbreviation of the QAnon slogan, “Where we go one, we go all.” As Trump spoke,...
Chicago Bears coaches and players spent Monday at Halas Hall going over what went wrong in Sunday night’s 27-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Here’s what we heard from coach Matt Eberflus as the Bears get ready to turn the page to a Week 3 meeting with the Houston Texans. 1. Eberflus spoke with cornerback Kyler Gordon about the ebb and flow he will face in his rookie season. Gordon, a second-round pick out of Washington, had some rough moments Sunday as Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers picked on him. He was at the center of several of the Packers’ biggest plays, starting with Rodgers’ 14-yard pass to Sammy Watkins and 8-yard pass to Allen Lazard on their first drive. While Gordon had a nice pass breakup in the end zone against Lazard on that drive, Lazard beat Gordon on a 5-yard touchdown catch that put the Packers up 24-7 at halftime. Watkins also got behind Gordon and safety Eddie Jackson on a 55-yard pass during the Packers’ game-sealing field-goal drive. Eberflus said he wants Gordon to study his mistakes...

Donald Trump boasted about his popularity and said candidates were 'kissing [his] a**' to get his endorsement during his Ohio rally on Saturday night. The ex-president also riled up the crowd with yet another hint that he's looking to run for the White House again in 2024, telling supporters 'we're gonna take back' the White House. Wading into the culture wars, he also said at one point: 'We don't want them teach transgender to our children without parental consent.' 'I really believe it's 200 million people we're talking about, not the 75 million, which is a record in the history of our country for a sitting president,' Trump told supporters after accusing the Biden administration of weaponizing the Justice Department when the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago. 'Not the 75 million people that voted - I think it's a lot more than that.' The former president also appeared to have on his mind reports of growing concern among the establishment GOP over the electability of Trump's more fringe midterm candidates. He took aim at suggestions that Ohio Senate candidate JD Vance is trying...

The rush of cheers were impossible to miss from second base, even as Jared Young tried to soak in the moment in front of 31,775 fans at Wrigley Field. His two-out double to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning in the Chicago Cubs’ 2-1 win Friday against the Colorado Rockies gave the 27-year-old Canadian his first major-league hit. “That’s probably the loudest building I’ve ever been in,” Young said afterward. “So that was pretty cool. This is the sweet moment an eight-year-old was left 'crying with joy' as Princess Kate picked her from the Sandringham crowd to place her Corgi toy tribute to the Queen among the carpet of flowers.  The new Princess of Wales, 40, was yesterday at the late monarch's Norfolk residence looking at the sea of tributes to the Queen and chatting to crowds with husband William. She spotted and spoke to schoolgirl Elizabeth Sulkovska, eight, clutching a bouquet of flowers and a corgi teddy. Footage shows the eight-year-old, who was in the crowd with school friends, speak to Kate. A delighted Elizabeth was then chosen to walk up to the sea of tributes with Kate and place the corgi among them.  The overjoyed youngster later recalled: 'I went with her to put the flowers and the corgi down. She said, "Where do you think we should lay the flowers?" and I said "We should put them there".'  Elizabeth's headteacher, Gregory Hill from Howard Junior School in King's Lynn, added: 'Elizabeth was overwhelmed, she cried with joy at being chosen. The White House hit back at Republican governors who are sending migrants to Washington, calling their actions 'cruel' and 'inhumane,' on Thursday after dozens were dumped outside the vice president's official residence. Instead, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre shrugged off questions about whether the border was secure to blame the Trump administration for a broken system. It comes as Republicans step up their attacks on the Biden administration for border security as they try to make immigration the theme of November's midterm elections.  'What I can tell you is the record and the process that we have been using to make sure that we do our best to secure the border,' Jean-Pierre said from the podium. 'We do our best to make sure that we fix a broken system that was left behind by the last administration.' She suggested a lengthy but uncertain timeline for fixing a system that she said was in 'fundamental' disrepair.  'We understand it's not like flipping a light switch. This does not happen overnight,' the Biden official said.  'This is an immigration system that is fundamentally...

FIRST there was the sadness and the dignity. The announcement that our beloved Queen had died. The grief at her passing and the enormous admiration at her reign. Watching our TVs, we joined with her family in mourning the death of perhaps Britain’s greatest ever monarch. It was truly the end of an era. 5While we were still grieving The Queen, things went a bit loonyCredit: PA Then, after a bit, while we were still grieving, things went a bit loony. The BBC cancelled the Last Night Of The Proms, for starters. I can’t think of a more fitting way for people to pay tribute to Liz than by singing patriotic hymns, but there we are. Then the holiday company Center Parcs made an utterly bizarre decision. All the people staying at its sites would be kicked out on Monday September 19, the day of the Queen’s funeral. And allowed back in the following day. God knows what they expected holidaymakers to do on the Monday evening. Doss by the side of the road? They’ve since relented a little...
New Hampshire GOP Senate nominee Don Bolduc decided to bring props out with him as he celebrated his triumph in the primary election. Bolduc, a retired Army brigadier general who has embraced Donald Trump’s 2020 election lies, defeated centrist Chuck Morse in Tuesday’s New Hampshire GOP primary. The result means Bolduc will face Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan in the state’s general election, and the development signals the continued march of 2022 midterm Republican candidates who’ve cast doubt on the 2020 election’s legitimacy. On Tuesday night, Bolduc brandished a shield pierced with arrows as he made celebratory remarks to his supporters. “We have taken their arrows!” He said. “We Have successfully ourselves! We are now going to rally around the circle: unity, freedom, liberty, and together, we’re gonna beat Maggie Hassan!” Judging by the design and the size of the shield, the armor piece appears to be a children’s costume piece referencing the movie 300. Political observers weighed in on that, along with the performativeness of Bolduc’s victory lap: . @Redistrict might be time to change the rating on this race...

Western governments have hailed Ukraine's "significant progress" in the war after Kyiv announced it had reclaimed more than 8,000 square kilometers (3,088 square miles) of Russian-occupied territory since the start of September. Ukraine's counterattacks prompted Russian forces to retreat from the Kharkiv region in the northeast of the country while Kyiv announced that the Ukrainian flag was once again being raised in hundreds of villages across the area. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proclaimed Wednesday that "we are moving in only one direction — forward and towards victory." The question on everyone's lips now is whether...

Popping vitamin D3 and Omega-3 fatty acid pills every day will not stop older adults from suffering inflammation and becoming frail, a study has found. Scientists at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts, behind the five-year research urged Americans over 50 years old to drop the 'unnecessary' pills Tuesday, and instead focus on exercise and the Mediterranean diet to protect their health. Herbal medicine sellers argue that the supplements — sold by a $6.8-billion industry — can help cut inflammation and slow age-related muscle loss, key risks for frailty. But scientific evidence for this is patchy, with the latest paper just the latest to suggest they have little benefit. Dr Ariela Orkaby, an aging expert who led the study, said today: 'We should consider deprescribing unnecessary pills, and instead promoting healthy lifestyle habits. 'Regular exercise and the Mediterranean diet are proven strategies for prevention of frailty and should be encouraged for all older adults.' Shown above are the frailty scores for American adults over 50 years old who took Omega-3 fatty acid supplements once a day (yellow dot) and no...
Joe Biden on Monday said ending cancer 'as we know it' was one of the reasons he ran for president as he supercharged his 'Cancer Moonshot' initiative with a shot of glamour from the Kennedy family. Biden, who wants to cut cancer deaths in half over the next 25 years, said cancer can be transformed into a disease that can be managed and lived with. He issued his new call to arms at the John F. Kennedy Library, on the anniversary of Prsident Kennedy's famous 'Moonshot' speech. 'On the 60th anniversary of his clarion call, we face another inflection point, and together, we can choose to move forward with unity, hope and optimism,' Biden said. He called on Americans to muster the 'energies and skills' to 'end cancer as we know it. And even cure cancers once and for all.' 'This cancer moonshot is one of the reasons why I ran for president,' he said. Biden noted cancer doesn't discriminate. 'It doesn't care if you're Republican or a Democrat.'  Biden was in Boston to deliberately set to echo John F. Kennedy's famous 1962 'Moonshot...
