The contract the Browns gave Deshaun Watson, which seemed rigged to minimize his punishment, didn’t go over well with the rest of the NFL. There are a few things about the contract between Deshaun Watson and the Browns that didn’t sit right with people. He was given the second biggest contract in NFL history complete with the most guaranteed money ever despite being accused of sexual misconduct by no less than two dozen women. Moreover, the contract included language that prevented him from losing significant money if he were suspended, which was definitely an inevitability. Since the first year of the deal featured an untouchable signing bonus and a $1 million base salary, docking him game checks would hardly make a financial dent. Browns: Deshaun Watson contract has upset the rest of the NFLAccording to Peter King, that aspect of the deal ruffled feathers around the league: “One influential NFL person told me on this trip that it doesn’t sit well with the league or 31 other owners that the Browns rigged the Watson contract so that his suspension would...
The Ravens signed Justin Tucker to a four-year extension Monday, rewarding the All-Pro kicker with an NFL-best deal that he said “will more than ensure that I will be a Raven for life.” Tucker’s deal, which extends his contract through 2027, will keep him as the league’s highest-paid kicker. The contract is worth $24 million, or $6 million annually, and includes $17.5 million guaranteed and an $11.5 million signing bonus, according to ESPN. “I feel beyond blessed,” Tucker, 32, said after Monday’s training camp practice. “I’m fired up, I’m motivated — all the things that I was feeling before I signed, but … maybe a little bit more after putting pen to paper. But no, I’m fired up. I’m blessed. I know that I get to come to work at an amazing place with amazing people. We get to continue working on building something great and working toward championships. Just to know that I will be in the plans for exactly that makes me feel very special.” Tucker’s deal came together quickly. He recalled joking to coach John Harbaugh at...

The two British stars have already faced off twice with Fury winning both times in 2011 and 2014. They became friends after their second fight but the undefeated star told talkSPORT recently they have fallen out. This happened after Chisora, who beat Kubrat Pulev via split decision last month, predicted Whyte would beat Fury. Del Boy’s promoter Eddie Hearn recently claimed that the 33-year-old's camp has made an official offer for a third fight. But Chisora is not keen as the money “wasn’t enough” and another meeting...

The Athletic's Shams Charania has reported that Durant recently met with Tsai on Saturday in London and told the billionaire that he has no faith in the direction of the team. The specific reasons for Durant's dissatisfaction remain unclear, at least publicly, but Charania reports that the Nets have 'direct knowledge' of the details. Getty Jalen Hurts finished 17-of-29 for 199 yards and two touchdowns versus New York on December 26, 2021. Jalen Hurts seems content to bet on himself and ride out his rookie contract. He’s entrenched as the starter, yet the long-term financial commitment remains off in the distance as the dual-threat quarterback enters Year 3. The Philadelphia Eagles have taken a wait-and-see approach with Hurts. No one has questioned his intangibles or character, but concerns abound over his quarterbacking skills. Things like arm strength, pocket presence, accuracy, and decision-making. Neither side seems ready to take a seat at the negotiating table until those questions are answered.  “We have Jalen Hurts, who’s a 23-year-old quarterback, who led his team to the playoffs, and he’s going to get better and better and better,” Eagles GM Howie Roseman said. “He’s going to do everything possible to get better, and we have to do our part in that.” Thanking God for another year around the Sun. Getty Images Kareem Hunt of the Cleveland Browns. The Cleveland Browns have a concerning situation developing in their backfield, with running back Kareem Hunt wanting to get “paid or traded” amid a contract dispute with the team. Hunt has been dubbed a “partial hold-in” by Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, with the former rushing leader not participating in team drills as he eyes a payday. “Browns RB Kareem Hunt — currently seeking a contract extension — did not participate in team drills for the second consecutive practice on Saturday,” Anderson tweeted on August 6. “I’ve been told several times Hunt periodically has said to members of the team informally — he wants to get paid or traded.” Anderson mentioned that Hunt’s agent was at the team facilities this week, which is a pretty good sign that some negotiating is going on behind the scenes. Hunt signed a two-year extension with the Browns in 2020 worth $13.25 million. He’ll be a free agent at the end of the year. “Hunt told the team multiple times recently, his current plan...

As time passes and the start of training camp draws ever nearer, the possibility that the Miami Heat could make a serious play for Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell (or any major star) feels more and more like a pipe dream. Pessimistic fans aren’t the only ones who think it might be time for a backup plan, either. In speaking with Heavy.com‘s Sean Deveney, a league executive indicated that Heat prez Pat Riley could look to shift his focus to acquiring another player with All-Star creds instead. Specifically, Hornets forward Gordon Hayward, whom the exec called “a guy they will keep an eye on.” Added the exec: “If you want to give up [Tyler] Herro before you pay him and you want to move [Duncan] Robinson, you would have to add a pick, but those two guys and Omer [Yurtseven], that might be enough to get Hayward.” However, one Heat insider rebuffed the notion that a Hayward deal makes sense for the...

Getty Lakers head coach of the Darvin Ham. The clock is ticking on the Los Angeles Lakers to find a trade partner for Russell Westbrook before the NBA season begins. NEW YORK (AP) — It has been rough sailing this summer for the Staten Island Ferry, yet another iconic New York City institution being buffeted by ripples of the coronavirus pandemic. All summer long, service on the big, orange boats that carry commuters and sightseeing tourists has been periodically curtailed due to staffing shortages. The disruptions reached a peak Wednesday, when the city was only able to run ferries once per hour, rather than the usual of every 15 minutes. The city’s fleet of smaller, river-hopping ferries was brought in to help get people across New York Harbor. City officials had blamed earlier service reductions in July on too many workers having COVID-19. On Wednesday, Mayor Eric Adams said “a significant share” of the workforce hadn’t reported to work and suggested it was related to a labor dispute. The union that represents captains, engineers and other crew members, disputed the mayor’s characterization of the worker shortage as being the result of a sick-out. Nor was COVID-19 predominantly to blame, they said. The real trouble is that the ferry’s staff has...

In other words, expect James to keep his options open, with an eye on a possible Lakers exit. As Helin wrote: “LeBron has made it clear he wants...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — One piece of IndyCar’s silly season fell into place Thursday when Rinus VeeKay announced a multi-year extension with Ed Carpenter Racing. Getty Lakers GM Rob Pelinka As the NBA offseason drags into its dog days, the Lakers appear to be quiet in their pursuit of a ground-breaking move that might significantly alter the landscape for the 2022-23 roster. Instead, it could be an offseason highlighted by a new coach, Darvin Ham, and a raft of relatively untested newcomers like Lonnie Walker IV, Juan Toscano-Anderson, Damian Jones and Thomas Bryant. Those are players who should make the Lakers more fun, overall, to watch next season—young players who hustle and have a chip on their collective shoulders. But they’re not guys who will have Lakers fans dreaming of an 18th banner. To have a realistic shot at that, the feeling is the Lakers must find a taker for point guard Russell Westbrook, and bring back some roster help when they do. Problem is, the Lakers have been putting too high an asking price on Westbrook, who has a $47 million contract and a badly damaged reputation. That’s got some around the league suggesting that the Lakers should return to conversations that were...
The F1 driver lineup for 2023 is slowly but surely coming together but not without the usual drama and uncertainty of silly season. Formula 1 silly season never fails to deliver some sort of craziness as teams and drivers play their own version of musical chairs. This year, Sebastian Vettel has opened one seat with his retirement while Fernando Alonso caused a stir by swapping Alpine for Aston Martin. Alpine leaned into the embarrassment by releasing a statement claiming they signed Oscar Piastri only for the driver to tweet that he would not be driving for Alpine. Getty Steve Kerr, left, and owner Joe Lacob of the Warriors The Warriors leaped when the opportunity to sign veteran NBA free-agent big man JaMychal Green presented itself last month, after the Oklahoma City Thunder bought him out following a trade with his former team, the Nuggets. In fact, Golden State left Green with no doubt of its commitment to him for the upcoming season, granting him a guaranteed contract for the whole year. Green will make $2.63 million next season, all guaranteed according to Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype. Because Green is a veteran, though, not all of that money will count against the Warriors and their payroll. Only $1.84 million of his contract will be tallied against Golden State for salary and luxury-tax purposes, a wrinkle in the NBA rules that encourages teams to sign veterans to minimum contracts and not just search for cheaper, younger options. Green is 32 years old and averaged 6.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 16.2 minutes for Denver last season. He was primarily a power forward, though he played some...
On Thursday, the National Football League issued an appeal on the six-game suspension of Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. Monday, an independent disciplinary officer of the NFL, Judge Sue L. Robinson issued the six-game suspension to Watson over a violation of the NFL’s personal-conduct policy. Watson has been accused of sexual assault and harassment and has settled 20 civil lawsuits against him. In an announcement made Thursday by the league, they said, “The NFL notified the NFLPA that it will appeal Judge Robinson’s disciplinary decision and filed its brief this afternoon. Commissioner Roger Goodell will determine who will hear the appeal.” According to the NFL, “the league could seek additional games to add to Watson’s suspension, a player fine and/or player treatment.” Don Riddell, of CNN’s World Sport, joined Jake Tapper on his show to explain the appeal further and what happens next. Ravens outside linebacker David Ojabo finalized his rookie contract Tuesday, ending a training camp holdout that had made the second-round pick the last unsigned player from this year’s draft class. Terms were not disclosed, but under the NFL’s rookie salary slotting structure for the No. 45 overall pick, Ojabo’s four-year deal is expected to be worth about $7.9 million. Negotiations had stalled over the guaranteed money in the third year of Ojabo’s contract. With his deal done, Ojabo can now report to Owings Mills and resume his offseason rehabilitation and rookie-year preparation under the supervision of Ravens officials. Ojabo was considered a first-round talent before he tore his Achilles tendon at Michigan’s pro day in March. In his breakout 2021 season with the Wolverines, he had 11 sacks and five forced fumbles in 14 games. After drafting Ojabo in late April, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said the team’s medical staff was optimistic, based on its evaluations at the NFL scouting combine, that Ojabo would have a chance to play “at some point this year.” “David is a guy that...

As such, Williams will shortly become eligible to sign a contract extension – assuming both he and the Celtics can reach an agreement on a new deal. Of course, whenever there is a potential contract discussion, there is always the concern that things won’t go as planned, and the team is left with a disgruntled player on their hands. TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have signed starting left tackle D.J. Humphries to a new contract that will keep him with the team through the 2025 season. The dependable veteran — who protects franchise quarterback Kyler Murray’s blind side — made his first Pro Bowl last season and has started 48 of 49 regular-season games over the past three seasons. Financial terms of the deal weren’t immediately disclosed. The 28-year-old was the team’s first-round pick in 2015 out of Florida. Humphries was entering the final season of a three-year deal he signed in 2020. The 6-foot-5, 307-pounder helped Arizona’s offense finish in the NFL’s top 10 in passing yards (4,619), rushing yards (2,076) and rushing touchdowns (23). He’s been a team captain in each of the past two seasons and is popular among teammates with his easy smile and good humor. Humphries has missed the first week of training camp because of what coach Kliff Kingsbury called an illness. ___ More AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl and https://twitter.com/AP_NFL Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The toughest part of a contract dispute for Deebo Samuel came in the final week when his San Francisco 49ers teammates were practicing and he could only work out on the side. The months-long drama that featured a social media scrub, a trade demand and finally a contract “hold-in” at the start of training camp came to an end this week when Samuel signed a three-year, $71.6 million extension through the 2025 season. “At the end of the day, this is a business,” Samuel said. “What changed was the communication. The more we communicated, the more we started to figure things out.” The communication picked up in June when Samuel showed up for the team’s mandatory minicamp after skipping the voluntary portion of the offseason. Samuel pointed to his close relationship with coach Kyle Shanahan with helping him get through the process while his agent and the front office negotiated the final details. “You’ve got to be patient. Be patient, communicate,” Samuel said. “Not everything is going to happen as you want it...
MetroAccess drivers in ATU Local 689 were on the picket line again Tuesday in the Glenarden area of Prince George’s County, Maryland. (WTOP/John Domen) When a striking MetroAccess driver showed up to meet with Transdev negotiators Tuesday morning, he was optimistic. “I thought there would be a different proposal put on the table, maybe a little increase,” said that driver, Tim Hollingsworth of ATU Local 689. “But it was the same thing as prior.” It was an offer that he said they’ve rejected multiple times already: “The exact same thing.” And for him and others who gathered along Hubbard Road in the Glenarden area of Prince George’s County, Maryland — outside the office where they normally show up for work — that wasn’t good enough. Tuesday’s meeting didn’t last very long. “I couldn’t have been in there about maybe 10, 15 minutes at most, if it was that long,” he said. Currently, the next negotiation between Transdev and ATU Local 689 isn’t scheduled until next Tuesday, though union leaders said they’re willing to meet at any time between now and...
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Bulls and guard Goran Dragic finalized a one-year, $2.9 million contract on Tuesday. The Bulls tweeted a welcome message in announcing the deal about a month after the two sides reached an agreement. The 36-year-old Dragic has averaged 13.7 points and shot 36.2% on 3-pointers over 14 seasons with Phoenix, Houston, Miami, Toronto and Brooklyn. From Slovenia, he made an All-Star team with the Heat during the 2017-18 season and helped them advance to the 2020 NBA finals. Dragic averaged 7.5 points while shooting 25.4% from beyond the arc last season for Toronto and Brooklyn. Though the Bulls ranked fourth in the NBA in 3-point accuracy, they were last in attempts. The Bulls took a big step by winning 46 games with DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine leading the way and posting their best record in seven years. ___ More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. Just days after being traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Houston Astros, Christian Vazquez is already thinking about a return. Vazquez took leaving Boston hard — perhaps harder than most around him thought he would. In the days leading up to the deadline, Vazquez confidently stated how he knew this was all part of the business. Considering the backstop was in a contract year, he was all but guaranteed to be moved if the Sox found themselves out of the AL playoff race this time of year. Surprisingly enough, that’s exactly what happened. As a result, Vazquez was traded to Houston — a team in desperate need of catching help. Martin Maldonado simply will no do, as he’s hitting well below the Mendoza line. Red Sox: Could Christian Vazquez return to Boston? We’ve seen it happen before — players can be traded before the deadline and eventually return to the team which traded them in the first place. Of course, those are very unique circumstances. Christian Vázquez said the door is open for him to return to the Red...
David Robertson is getting another opportunity with the Philadelphia Phillies. He never had a chance to be the type of high-leverage reliever he expected to be when signing a two-year, $23 million contract before the 2019 season. And then, just seven appearances into the season, Robertson suffered an arm injury that eventually required Tommy John surgery. Robertson didn’t throw another pitch in a Phillies uniform. Robertson gets another chance to be what the Phillies needed. The Cubs on Tuesday traded Robertson to the Phillies for pitching prospect Ben Brown. Brown, 22, was recently promoted to the Phillies’ Double-A affiliate after recording a 3.08 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) at High A. Baseball America’s midseason rankings put him 7th in the Phillies system. Robertson sounded excited about a potential reunion with the Phillies when talking to the Tribune last month about the possibility. “I know a lot of people there, it would be great,” Robertson said. “It’d be nice to pitch there after being so excited to go there. My body just let me down. It was a great spot...
