What is the opposite of “putting everything off until later”? Well, “do everything right away”. This is prechristening. Everything has to be achieved… even if it’s urgent. In 2014, Dr. David Rosenbaum’s team from the University of Pennsylvania (USA) conducted an experiment with 257 students: they had to follow a route to bring water to a given location. A bucket of water near the start line and a bucket of water at the finish line are clearly visible. Unsurprisingly, the team found that most students chose the first bucket they could pick up, even if it meant carrying it all the way. The researchers named this behavior precrastination because it is the opposite of procrastination, which consists of delaying the moment of accomplishing a task as long as possible. Until then it was thought that an “intelligent” organism chose to minimize its energy expenditure! However, the choice of the first bucket imposes additional effort. Wish to finish soon Their results: Students acted this way to get the impression they were completing the requested task faster! The authors suggest that...

But shortly after examining the renovation results, she ended up with “one stuff up after another”. Phynart Studio | Istock | Getty Images President Joe Biden's announcement last month that he'll forgive up to $20,000 in student debt for borrowers will also impact the millions of parents who have taken out loans for their children's education. The debt cancellation applies to so-called Parent PLUS loans, federal loans that parents can take out to help their dependent children cover their college costs. With tuition costs spiking over the last few decades, more students are hitting the limits on what they can borrow in student loans, pushing parents to borrow more. More from Personal Finance:How student loan forgiveness will be applied to your debtsKey events on the path to student loan forgivenessHow to calculate your bill for student loan forgiveness Currently, more than 600,000 parents take out student loans for their children each year, up from around 450,000 in 2000, according to data provided by higher-education expert Mark Kantrowitz. The average outstanding Parent PLUS loan is about $30,000, he said. Many of these parents will now get some relief. "Both students and parents should apply for forgiveness," Kantrowitz...
I drove into the parking lot of a cheap motel in the San Fernando Valley—the porn capital of the world. It was the kind of place where the exposed balconies lead to bright orange doors. I remember thinking there was way too much activity for a random Wednesday at lunch time. I was on high alert—maybe it was the nerves. I noticed people loitering, making deals of the illegal substance kind, and a few who looked to be cruising. I could tell this place was a hotbed of illicit activity—and I was about to add to it. I took a deep breath and called my booking partner for the room number. “He’s in 103. Be careful. Call me to check in,” she said. I never would have thought I would do something like this, but there I was taking that brisk walk across a seedy parking lot to a motel room door on that unseasonably warm June day so I could meet a man I didn’t know to pay me for sex. I tried not to think too much about...

Former Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer said he hated the summer opinion that overturned nearly 50 years of abortion precedent under Roe v. Wade, admitting that he tried to persuade other justices to change their decisions. "Was I happy about it? Not for an instant. Did I do everything I could to persuade people? Of course, of course," he told CNN's Chris Wallace of the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which allowed states to impose severe limitations or restrict abortion access. Breyer was one of three Democratic-appointed justices who voted against the six Republican-appointed majority members of the high court to retain the precedent established under Roe. STEPHEN BREYER REFUSES TO CRITICIZE GINNI THOMAS AHEAD OF HER JAN. 6 APPEARANCE The outcome of the Dobbs decision was long anticipated after a draft of the opinion leaked to the press on May 2, prompting droves of protesters to descend on the Supreme Court on the night of the leak and for weeks to come until the final ruling came down on June 24. "It was very damaging because...
Newly retired liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer said he was 'very, very, very sorry' to be on the losing side of the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade.  'And you say did I like this Dobbs decision? Of course I didn't. Of course I didn't,' he said in an interview with CNN's Chris Wallace for an interview to air Sunday night. 'Was I happy about it? Not for an instant. Did I do everything I could to persuade people? Of course, of course. But there we are and now we go on. We try to work together.' He warned his Supreme Court colleagues that overly rigid decisions 'will come around and bite you in the back.'  'Because you will find something you see just doesn't work at all. And the Supreme Court, somewhat to the difference of others, has that kind of problem in spades,' Breyer said.   Dobbs overturned nearly 50 years of precedent, with the conservative justices writing that the implicit 'right to privacy' in the Constitution didn't exist, throwing decisions about abortion laws back to the...
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick admits that the pressure is on the Baltimore Ravens to back quarterback Lamar Jackson with a hefty contract. Bill Belichick is often not a man of many words, unless he’s quizzed about the history of football. To some extent, that is what he commented on when he was asked about Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson’s abilities in the pocket. Ever since he entered the league, Jackson has faced ample criticism for the way he plays quarterback — even after he was unanimously voted NFL MVP in 2019. Jackson has the ability to run and pass the ball, although there have been critiques of his passing capabilities. Jackson all but answered them in a 42-38 loss to the Miami Dolphins that saw Jackson complete 21 of 29 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, Jackson’s incredibly efficient day was overshadowed by Tua Tagovailoa’s monstrous 469-yard performance that resulted in six passing touchdowns. But Belichick saw what Jackson can do. So when he was asked if Jackson had finally answered questions about his...

Whenever Orioles reliever Joey Krehbiel passes by one of his teammates completing an interview, he asks — with a perfect blend of sincerity and sarcasm — whether they said his name. As reporters surrounded Jordan Lyles’ locker in Baltimore’s clubhouse Wednesday minutes after he finished off a complete game, the 31-year-old right-hander yelled out, “Joey Krehbiel!” It was just another case of him picking up a member of the Orioles’ bullpen. The lone veteran on Baltimore’s pitching staff, Lyles has served as an exemplar for its inexperienced members. Wednesday night’s nine-inning performance against the Detroit Tigers served as the latest showcase. “He’s our leader, basically,” rookie starter Kyle Bradish said. “We call him Dad. That’s the running joke, even though he’s not too much older than us, but he’s got that experience.” Lyles entered this season with just over 10 years of major league service time, twice as much as every other current member of the Orioles’ rotation combined. That status alone has earned him respect in Baltimore’s clubhouse, but the way he’s performed on the mound has impressed his...

Star Wars has another prequel in its roster: Andor, its newest Disney+ series. Andor follows Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), the Rebel Alliance intelligence officer and pilot who was introduced and then sacrificed his life in 2016’s Rogue One. But after seeing Cassian, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), and the rest of their team perish on-screen, fans never thought that more stories starring those characters were in the cards. But thanks to the franchise’s affinity for hopping back and forth through time for their various projects, Cassian Andor’s story will continue—by going five years backward. Why focus on a character that fans know is going to die not long after the show wraps? Doing that is kind of Star Wars’ MO. We knew that Darth Vader would kill Sidious and die in Luke Skywalker’s arms in Return of the Jedi, the third Star Wars film released. But that didn’t stop the franchise from spawning an entire set of prequels 20-plus years later, which showed Vader’s (a.k.a. Anakin Skywalker’s) origins. But unlike the prequel trilogy of movies, which end 19 years before...

Getty Paulo Costa walks out after defeating Luke Rockhold. UFC superstar Paulo Costa fired shots at Khamzat Chimaev and issued a daring challenge for him. Costa is coming off an impressive victory over former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold in the co-main event of UFC 278 last month. He snapped his two-fight skid to get back to winning ways as he looked to get closer to a title shot. After the win, Costa resumed training at UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chimaev was scheduled to headline UFC 279 opposite fan favorite Nate Diaz on Sep. 10. However, he missed weight by a massive seven and a half pounds and had to get pulled out of the main event spot for an updated catchweight contest with Kevin Holland. ‘Borz’ scored another dominant first-round finish over Holland without absorbing a single significant strike. During the build-up to his fight, Chimaev crossed paths with Costa, who was working on his grappling chops with Jake Shields, at the PI in Vegas. The two nearly came to blows in a heated altercation...

As far as offering forgiveness at a time of overwhelming grief, King Charles and Prince William have been both compassionate and statesmanlike over the past seven days. Gary White’s earliest video game memory is playing Secret of Mana against his cousin on the Super Nintendo, still his most cherished gaming console to this day. Now, decades later, the 35-year-old Saratoga County resident, of Ballston Spa, has turned his nostalgia for retro video games into a family-owned business in Albany County, appropriately named Shroomy’s Game Store. A new Long Island eatery is making a name for itself by serving up classic breakfast dishes with a twist. Nappi's Nook first began serving customers in Nesconset on Monday, June 6, owner Steve Nappi said. Nappi said he has worked in the restaurant business for 30 years, and he and his brother jumped on the opportunity to open a new restaurant in the neighborhood where they grew up. Some dishes featured on the menu include a corned beef hash benedict, loaded tater tots topped with eggs and smoked cheddar, and apple pie pancakes. “Everything has a little twist to it,” Nappi said. The short rib benedict is one of the most popular dishes on the menu, he added. Some online reviewers have already shouted out some of the unique menu options. "I went with my two kids, and they got the waffles & beignets," Herb D., of Smithtown, said in a Yelp review. "I got the...

SINCE her death, the flood of tributes to the late Queen have been heartfelt and unceasing. But perhaps none have been more remarkable than that delivered in the Northern Irish Assembly by Michelle O’Neill, the President of Sinn Fein. 1King Charles III meeting Sinn Fein Vice President Michelle O'Neill at Hillsborough Castle, Co DownCredit: PA In a statement full of generosity, O’Neill heaped praise on Elizabeth II as “courageous and gracious leader”, who had made “a significant contribution to the advancement of peace.” Ms O’Neill added that in “her relationships with those us who are Irish”, she had shown “warmth, kindness and unfailing courtesy.” Coming from the senior figure of a Republican organisation that was created as the political wing of the IRA, those words graphically illustrate how Northern Ireland has changed since the end of the Troubles. Only a few decades ago, such language would have been unthinkable. The Crown represented everything that the Republicans loathed. It was the bedrock of British rule in the province, a symbol of colonialist occupation and a barrier to...

Maurice Jones-Drew has warned Russell Wilson that he faces being exposed this season following his big money move to the Denver Broncos. After 10 years in Seattle the marriage turned sour for the 33-year-old quarterback, who signed a five-year, $296million deal in Denver. Now in the brutal AFC West, and an equally cutthroat conference, Wilson and the Broncos face pressure and serious scrutiny from the off, with their season starting on Monday night with a trip back to Seattle. ‘I think this year is gonna really show if Russell Wilson is the elite guy that we all think he is,’ NFL Network analyst Jones-Drew told DailyMail.com. by Michael McKenna   There has been a lot of talk during this election cycle about “voter enthusiasm;” which side has it, what are its causes, and what might it all mean for the final result. Much of it is propaganda that should be ignored, but there are some numbers and data that can help illuminate the terrain. All that attention is appropriate, given that each and every election depends entirely on who shows up to vote. Let’s start with the propaganda. Lots of attention has been focused on the Morning Consult’s time series on voter enthusiasm, which, at the moment, gives the Republicans a slight edge in voter enthusiasm, with 65% of the self-identified Republicans indicating that they are very excited about voting this year. The Democrats are trailing a bit, with only 62% of their folks saying that are excited about voting. If you don’t like those results, wait a minute or two. Morning Consult has been asking about voter enthusiasm for about 18 months now, and the answer has bounced around quite a bit. Way back...

Matt Eberflus has been in football long enough that he knows not to pay attention to predictions, particularly those that suggest the Chicago Bears could be in for a rough year in his first season as head coach. However, he knows his players likely see them, and so he said it’s important for his young team to focus on their fundamentals as they open the season Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers at Soldier Field. “In today’s age, everybody looks at everything. It’s part of our life now,” Eberflus said. “You understand, you put that in a bucket. It’s an opinion of somebody’s or it isn’t fact. “We write our own story. I told the guys that all the time, we’re writing our own book. And then we do it one game at a time. And then you can micro it down to each play. … They go Play 1: alignment, assignment, key, technique, execution, production. Did you get it done? Turn the page. More and more Russian officials are urging Vladimir Putin to get the hell out of the Kremlin as Moscow suffered another series of humiliating defeats in Ukraine this weekend. Just one day after several municipal deputies in Putin’s hometown of St. Petersburg called on the State Duma to try the Russian leader for treason, their colleagues in Moscow joined in and demanded he step down because his views are “hopelessly outdated.” The open letter to Putin from municipal deputies in the Russian capital’s Lomonosovsky district started out by seemingly trying to let him down gently, telling him he had “good reforms” in his first term and part of his second. But then, “everything went wrong,” the deputies said. “The rhetoric that you and your subordinates use has been riddled with intolerance and aggression for a long time, which in the end effectively threw our country back into the Cold War era. Russia has again begun to be feared and hated, we are once again threatening the whole world with nuclear weapons,” the letter read. “We ask you to relieve yourself...
