by Bethany Blankley   Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued new warnings Monday ahead of Hurricane Ian, expected to make landfall this week. It was upgraded from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane Monday morning and is projected to strengthen to a major hurricane. As of 11 am Monday, the storm was located roughly 375 miles south of Key West. It’s moving about 15 miles an hour north with maximum winds of 80 miles an hour. As it moves into the Gulf, it’s expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as early as Tuesday, DeSantis said. “It will bring heavy rains, strong winds, flash flooding, storm surge, along with isolated tornado activity along Florida’s Gulf Coast,” he said. Florida should brace for a large hurricane he said, the diameter of the hurricane is roughly 500 miles wide. “You will see storm surge in southwest Florida,” he said, “even though the storm is projected to be a hundred miles off the coast.” Some counties have begun evacuations, he added, with more to come. Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus and players met with reporters Monday after going over film of the 23-20 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday at Soldier Field. Here are four things we learned as they turn the page to their Week 4 game against the New York Giants. 1. Cole Kmet was happy to get his first two catches but emphasized the Bears need more from all parties in the passing game. Kmet had gone nearly 10 quarters without a catch when he reeled in Justin Fields’ throw and rumbled a few more yards for a 24-yard gain late in the second quarter. Along with a 16-yard catch in the fourth quarter, Kmet finished with two catches for 40 yards on three targets, the other a poorly thrown interception by Fields. For a player looking to break out in his third season, the catches were a long time coming. Kmet was targeted twice in the first two games and had a glaring drop against the Green Bay Packers. “It obviously took way longer than I thought it would,” Kmet...

SELF-CHECKOUT theft has become so popular over the years that stores have created it's own lingo when it comes to shoplifting including phrases like "the banana trick," "the pass around," and "the switcheroo." Stealing from self-checkout when shopping at stores like Walmart and Kroger has become so widespread that stores are making it's own language when it came to the shoplifters' tactics. 2Stores have created their own lingo when it comes to self-checkout stealing tacticsCredit: Getty 2Researchers said shoppers who wouldn't normally steal, do so at self-checkout because it's easyCredit: Getty "The banana trick" came along when shoppers would scan an expensive item with a code for a cheaper item, The Atlantic reported in 2018. The outlet used a T-bone steak for example. This expensive steak would be $13.99 a pound, but a shopper would scan an item from produce for 49 cents a pound to get their dinner for cheap. Another common trick is when customers simply don't scan the item at all. This is called "the pass around." One of the harder tactics is called "the switcheroo." ...
The Chicago Bulls ushered in a new season with heightened expectations during media day Monday at the Advocate Center. Training camp begins Tuesday in preparation for four preseason games, starting Oct. 4 at home against the New Orleans Pelicans. The season opener is Oct. 19 in Miami with the home opener three days later against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Here are five things we learned from media day. 1. Zach LaVine is ready for action. LaVine voiced excitement about returning at full strength after a left knee injury hampered the All-Star shooting guard’s availability throughout the second half of the 2021-22 season. He underwent arthroscopic surgery in May to address lingering swelling and discomfort in the knee. After struggling with discomfort for months in the spring, LaVine said he now feels pain-free and confident in his physical abilities following the procedure. “I feel really good,” he said. “Surgery is surgery, but being able to have a small invasive surgery like that is great. Being able to get back to 100% was all I was looking for, so I feel great going...
The San Jose Sharks made their first round of training camp cuts Monday afternoon, one day after their opening game of the preseason schedule and a week and a half ahead of their season opener in Prague against the Predators. Their roster began the day with 64 players and will end it with 50. Ozzy Wiesblatt, the Sharks’ first-round pick (No. 31) in the 2020 draft, was among the cuts, but that was not unexpected as he has been ticketed for the Barracuda, where he was assigned Monday. New coach David Quinn had praised Wiesblatt on Saturday for his willingness to get involved in scrums, rather than just relying on his offensive talent, but in the end, the Sharks decided he wasn’t in a position to take a roster spot away from someone else. President Joe Biden on Monday slammed companies for keeping prices high, and demanded that gas stations, banks and cell phone services reduce costs for families who are struggling with record levels of inflation. The economic crisis has dogged Biden's administration as Democrats look to hang on to the House and the Senate in November's midterm elections.   During a White House meeting, Biden singled out 'junk fees' such as bank overdraft charges and and cell phone termination charges for causing economic pain.  And he had a special message for gas companies.  'My message is simple…Bring down the prices you're charging at the pump,' he said during a meeting of his White House Competition Council. 'Do it now… Not a month from now. Do it now.' He said that he was tasking his council to come up with ways to encourage competition and reduce fees. In particular, he focused on overdraft fees from banks, termination fees from cell phone companies and airline rebooking fees.  President Joe Biden on Monday demanded that gas stations, banks and cell phone services reduce costs for families...

Although non-drivers who are in the country illegally could alternatively use "a consult ID or foreign passport to corroborate their identities," the CIPC claimed that doing so "is an often dangerous 'outing' process ... hence making them feel unsafe and vulnerable in revealing that they are foreign nationals living in the U.S." This law specifies that the enforcement of federal immigration laws "does not constitute an urgent health and safety need," so indications on the license that the holder is an illegal alien will henceforth be omitted. The New York Times reporter revealed in her forthcoming book, “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America,” that the former president told her Sept. 16, 2021, at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey, that he mentioned that he had held onto some government records that should have been sent to the National Archives, according to excerpts published by Axios. “He demurred when I asked if he had taken any documents of note upon departing the White House — ‘nothing of great urgency, no,’ he said, before mentioning the letters that Kim Jong-un had sent him, which he had showed off to so many Oval Office visitors that advisers were concerned he was being careless with sensitive material,” Haberman reported. Haberman expressed surprise that he took those letters, which he eventually returned months later after the National Archives demanded them. “He kept talking, seeming to have registered my surprise, and said, ‘No,...

Initial reports said two security guard and several children were wounded or killed in the No. 88 school in Izhevsk - the capital of Russia's Udmurt Republic roughly 600 miles east of Moscow. The multidisciplinary French artist Just Jaeckin passed away Sept. 6 from cancer at the age of 82, his agent confirmed to The New York Times on Sunday. Jaeckin was well-regarded for his artistic versatility, landing photographs in Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, and Vogue, and achieving international success with his debut film, the 1974 softcore drama Emmanuelle. Jaeckin was able to develop a reputation as a photographer for the stars in the 1960s, nabbing black-and-white shots of the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, and Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg. His first film, Emmanuelle, followed a young woman’s journey to Bangkok in discovering her sexual appetite. It grossed nearly $9 million—$53 million in today’s dollars—in ticket sales in the U.S. alone, a runaway success that inspired a series of sequels. It was Columbia Pictures first X-rated feature, and although it was and remains controversial for its depiction of women, it was a hit internationally, including in Germany, Spain, and Japan. Jaeckin would go on to direct seven other films, including The Story of O, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and The...

If California is to make reparations to Black residents whose families have been harmed by slavery and its ongoing economic repercussions, how should the program be structured? Should reparations be given as cash payments to individuals? Or should they come in other forms of government assistance in Black communities? What legal challenges exist? These and many other questions were the subject of a two-day hearing by California’s Reparations Task Force, a first-in-the-nation panel established in 2020 to develop proposals for potential reparations for Black families — who have been harmed for generations by enslavement, segregation, redlining and other racist state policies and laws. Many questions over the logistics of a state reparations program remain unanswered. Playing in close games has been a staple for the Chicago Cubs this season. They entered Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates having won each of their last four games by one run. It was the first time the Cubs won four straight road games by one run since June 17-21, 1989, according to team historian Ed Hartig. Overall, the Cubs’ 85 games decided by two runs or less are the most in Major League Baseball ahead of the Pirates (83). The Cubs own a 39-46 record (.459) in those games. They also have played 50 one-run games, third-most in the majors. “We’ve had some opportunities lately that the other team has given us some gifts to help us out a little bit,” manager David Ross said Saturday. “That’s something that we focus on to try to get a little bit better, but I wouldn’t say anything stood out (during this stretch). I think these guys are playing hard to the end and they’re doing some little things to help themselves out.” With 10 games remaining after their 6-0 loss...

Their investigation focused on four areas of Ukraine—Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Sumy—where horrific reports of alleged war crimes, including the rape of civilians and summary executions, began to emerge between late February and March of this year as Russia began its war. Friday’s report is the first from the UN to bring forth extensive evidence backing up these allegations, including through interviews with dozens...
