Tampa Police Chief Mary O’Connor has been placed on leave after body-cam footage emerged, showing that she pulled the “don’t you know who I am” card when she and her hubby were stopped for cruising around town in a golf cart with no license plates. Mayor Jane Castor announced the move on Friday, just a day after local paper Creative Loafing Tampa Bay published footage they said they obtained after “weeks of targeted public records requests.” “Police Chief Mary O'Connor has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into a recent traffic stop,” Castor tweeted. The mayor—who was police chief herself between 2009 and 2015—did not release further details about the length of leave. The footage obtained by Creative Loafing captured Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy Larry Jacoby pulling O’Connor and husband Keith over at about 7.30 p.m. on Nov. 13. O’Connor first checked if Jacoby’s camera was on before she flashed her badge and told him, “I’m the police chief from Tampa... I’m hoping that you’ll just let us go tonight.” Jacoby...
Jeanine Pirro and Geraldo Rivera sparred over whether hate speech is covered by free speech. “What do you think about free speech and Elon Musk?” said Rivera during Thursday’s The Five. “It’s one thing to be anti-woke, but it’s not anti-woke to be repulsed by Kanye West praising [Adolf] Hitler or Nick Fuentes being lavishly celebrated at Mar-a-Lago, that’s not woke.” On InfoWars on Thursday, West praised Hitler and, along with host Alex Jones and Fuentes, who dined with West and former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago last week, made anti-Semitic remarks. Pirro defended the idea of free speech: Here’s the bottom line: if you don’t like what someone is saying, you don’t have the right to tell them they can’t close their mouth and they cannot speak. The United States Supreme Court in Brandenburg vs. Ohio, I go to the highest court in the land, says no matter how repulsive this speech is, America was founded on the concept of free speech. Hate speech is protected. I’m tired of saying it. These people like Elizabeth Warren who says it’s...

Most people know that our country has an “access to justice” problem. That is, there are many people that need a lawyer but are unable to find one. Many who could benefit from legal assistance don’t realize the law could protect them, or they don’t know where to find a lawyer, or they don’t know who to trust, or they don’t have the money to pay for it, or all of the above. A lot of ink has spilled debating possible solutions to this problem. One innovation in this space is being used in Minnesota and I wonder if anyone knows about it? In recent years, an increasing number of states have experimented with paraprofessional lawyers. In those jurisdictions, they identify a very narrow and limited set of legal issues that non-lawyers could help with and train those non-lawyers to carry out that service. These newly trained paraprofessionals move forward with some strict limitations but they can offer advice and guidance at a cheaper price. An interesting ingredient in the access to justice jambalaya is how often it seems that...
Former chairman of the Republican National Committee, Micheal Steele, tore into the party he once led in a discussion on MSNBC on Wednesday and argued the GOP doesn’t “get” to move on from Trumpism so quickly. MSNBC host Joy Reid introduced the segment by saying, “The story is the creeping white nationalism that has infected the party that all of these people support, the party that has invited hate and fear of fellow Americans as guests to Thanksgiving dinner” – referring to former President Donald Trump dining with neo-Nazi Nick Fuentes. “And until they kick this ideology out and not just slap Trump around a little bit because he lost them elections, I mean, kicked them out. All the prosecutions in the world won’t make any difference,” Reid continued, adding: Joining me now is Michael Steele, MSNBC political analyst, former chair of the Republican National Committee and host of the Michael Steele podcast. CNN anchor Don Lemon cracked up as he and Stephen Colbert roasted new CNN CEO Chris Licht over, among other things, his edict against on-air New Year’s Eve boozing. On Tuesday night’s edition of CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Lemon made an appearance to promote his brand-new program CNN This Morning. But a good chunk of the interview was devoted to Licht — formerly a longtime production honcho for Colbert who has taken over as CNN CEO — that included some good-natured ribbing from current and former colleagues alike. Colbert brought up the anti-boozing edict, at which point he and Lemon simulated a violation of the policy — and cracked some jokes about Licht: DON LEMON: Boss. Boss, this is. You know him? He’s going to get me. You’re going to get me in trouble. STEPHEN COLBERT: He doesn’t work here anymore. He can’t stop me from doing (BLEEP). DON LEMON: We had a little side-bet if I’m going to win or you’re going to win. STEPHEN COLBERT: About what? DON LEMON: So obviously, we had a little conversation. STEPHEN COLBERT: You and Chris?...

CNN anchor Don Lemon stunned comic and host Stephen Colbert with his response to the charge that under new CEO Chris Licht, “you guys aren’t allowed to be liberal anymore.” Much has been made of the fact that Licht — formerly a longtime production honcho for Colbert — has signaled an intention to make CNN a more hospitable place for Republicans since he took over the network. On Tuesday night’s edition of CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Lemon made an appearance to promote his brand-new program CNN This Morning. Colbert immediately addressed the elephant in the room, first by joking that Licht used to run the applause sign, then asking Lemon about consternation over the new regime. With the low price point and the universal nature of the gift, you gotta get creative, but you also want people to covet it—or, at the very least, actually use it. Of course, a White Elephant gift shouldn’t be overly expensive (a price range and/or budget is usually agreed upon beforehand), and it also needs to be versatile and lighthearted enough to please just about anyone in the group (this is especially important if you’re doing an office White Elephant party with your colleagues). For instance, a White Elephant party with your close group of friends may warrant a silly (and even slightly scandalous) gift, but that’s not going to fly at a gift exchange with your extended family, coworkers, and sometimes, even strangers. Alas, for most situations, you need something with universal appeal that’s not too niche yet not too generic either. There are many...

President Joe Biden on Saturday refused to comment on Donald Trump's impromptu dinner with Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes and disgraced rapper Kanye West at Mar-a-Lago. 'You don't want to know what I think,' he said in response to DailyMail.com's question while he was out shopping on Nantucket with wife Jill and daughter Ashley. Biden, who is spending the Thanksgiving holiday on the island, was out for Small Business Saturday. He visited at least nine stores in the more than hour he spent walking around the downtown shopping area. Trump caused an outrage - even among some Republicans - when it was revealed he had dinner with Fuentes, described as an alt-right figure and a 'white supremacist,' at his Palm Beach home. Ye, as the rapper West goes by now, was also present. The White House earlier weighed in on the matter, with spokesman Andrew Bates saying: 'Bigotry, hate, and antisemitism have absolutely no place in America - including at Mar-A-Lago. Holocaust denial is repugnant and dangerous, and it must be forcefully condemned.' President Joe Biden refused to comment on Donald Trump's impromptu...

There are two types of makeup brands that stand out in the crowded market today: those that have countless one-trick products to choose from, and the more conservative brands that limit their lineup to a selection of staple, multi-purpose products. And while I once appreciated having an overstuffed makeup bag full of colorful eyeliners, bright blushes, and multi-hued matte lipsticks, I’m starting to understand that less really is more, especially after going virtually a year without wearing makeup during the pandemic. It’s not to say that I don’t enjoy putting on and wearing makeup every day, but with a schedule that only seems to increase in busyness and a stretched budget due to increasing costs and inflation, I don’t have as much time or money to invest in makeup as I once did. This means I’ve been much more strategic about what brands I’ll buy from and what products I’ll purchase lately. Enter: Merit Beauty—a relatively new vegan and cruelty-free makeup brand that...

By Mark Kennedy | Associated Press If you don’t have children, you will likely walk out of “The Son” shaken and deeply moved. If you do have kids, you may have to be eventually pulled to your feet after collapsing into a fetal ball for several hours. Writer-director Florian Zeller’s second installment in his trilogy examining mental health is an emotional wrecking ball almost exquisite in its destructive power. If his previous film, “The Father,” needed a trigger warning about dementia, “The Son” needs one for depression and suicide. Despite the title, “The Son” is really about the father in this story, Peter, a successful workaholic Manhattan lawyer on his second wife and second child, a newborn. Past and present collide when Nicholas, the 17-year-old son from his first marriage, reaches a crescendo of mental anguish. “It’s life. It’s weighing me down. I want something to change, but I don’t know what,” he cries. “I feel like my head’s exploding.” But neither dad — Hugh Jackman, in easily his finest work onscreen — nor mom, Laura Dern in another heart-led...
    J. Edgar Hoover doesn’t have a lot of admirers. Author Beverly Gage, who just published a book about the late FBI director, doesn't even admire him. “It's extremely hard to find people who want to champion J. Edgar Hoover, and that is not my goal, either. But I do think there are more interesting and subtle things to say about him than simply that he was a very bad man who did some very bad things,” says Gage, author of G-Man: J. Those bad things include trying to silence Martin Luther King Jr. and abusing his power, particularly with the surveillance program COINTELPRO, among other things. DEAR MISS MANNERS: My husband and I enjoy the company of another couple we’ve known for years. I’ve had them over for dinner many times. I eat only plant-based (vegan) foods; however, I make both vegan and meat-based dishes for everyone else. I don’t ask them to bring anything, as they are our guests. A few years ago, we invited them to meet us for dinner at a restaurant, which we planned to pay for. A day before the planned dinner, they called and wanted to invite us to their house rather than eating out. I asked if I could bring anything, and their answer was no. When dinner at their house was served, it was stew with multiple kinds of meat and no vegetables. Even the salad had bacon in it. The wife said, “I don’t think you eat meat, but I hope you can eat this.” Miss Manners, they have known for years that I don’t eat animal products. I picked through the meal as best I could without complaint. Since the pandemic, we haven’t gotten together with...
“Where else would you rather be than right here, right now?” That quote is attributed to former Buffalo Bills coach Marv Levy, but it applies to every American living in 2022. Compared with almost every other time and place in history, we have won the lottery. Yet our dissatisfaction as a whole is palpable. Let’s start with politics, where—on the right, at least—the sense of doom and gloom has become something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. “Populist movements almost by definition don’t spring up among people who think everything is going great and they’re getting a fair shake,” writes Jonah Goldberg in his 2018 book Suicide of the West. “Populism is fueled by resentment, the sense that the ‘real people’ are being kept down or exploited by the elites or the establishment or, in the numerous extreme cases of populism, shadowy conspirators.” Sound familiar? A lot of blame belongs to people in the grievance business (politicians and media folks who profit off of stoking anger and bitterness). I’ll use a recent example: The big complaint on Fox News this Thanksgiving week...

OVER a quarter of a million Brits don't know they are living with a silent killer, new research has revealed. Experts at the University of Exeter said all adults aged 40-70 should be screened for type 2 diabetes. 1New data has shown that a quarter of a million Brits don't know they are living with type 2 diabetes. The NHS says that feeling thirsty is one of the key symptomsCredit: Getty Type 2 diabetes is a common condition that causes the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood to become too high, the NHS states. It's often referred to as a silent killer because in many cases, people don't know they have the illness - as it can take a long time for symptoms to appear. The condition, if left untreated, can lead to a risk of strokes, heart disease, blindness, kidney disease and amputation, Diabetes UK states. These chefs and a drink maven are sharing their thoughts on how to keep the focus where it should be this holiday season — on family and friends, food and drink — while keeping costs down. Here’s their advice: Stephanie Andrews, beverage director at Billy Sunday Charlotte, Spindle BarStephanie Andrews, beverage director at Billy Sunday Charlotte and Spindle Bar, said the best bet to serve a crowd on a budget is always punch. You can create a nonalcoholic version, then set up a few bottles nearby and “allow people to create their own adventure.” Gins and vodkas tend to have a lower price point, she said, making it possible to serve 15-20 people for about...
CNN’s Scott Jennings has had it with Kari Lake casting doubt on the results of the Arizona gubernatorial race where she was defeated by Democrat Katie Hobbs. In her latest video address on the results, Lake called the last Election Day in Arizona the “most chaotic” in the state’s history and cited non-operational machines presenting significant failures. “Would you get on an airplane if half of the engines didn’t work?” she asked. Election officials have previously pushed back on conspiracy theories about the election results in Arizona, especially in Maricopa County. Reacting to the election doubting on CNN, Jennings, a former special assistant to the president under George W. Bush, dismissed Lake’s claims and claimed she should head to court if she thinks she has real proof of fraud. “My view is if you have something, go to court. If you don’t, shut up,” Jennings said. “Most people in the country — we had an election, the winners won, the losers conceded. Most places this worked out. Arizona, I just think we got a different result … I think it’s...
Elon Musk is purposefully creating a “car crash” scenario at Twitter, reporter Ben Collins warned MSNBC viewers on Monday. Joining Andrea Mitchell, Collins, who covers disinformation and extremism for NBC News, reported on Musk’s recent decision to let controversial figures like Kanye West and Donald Trump back onto Twitter. Collins accused Musk of “de facto” endorsing people like West, who now goes by Ye, by allowing back on the platform and reacting to their tweets. One of West’s first messages back was “Sholom,” a trolling response to controversy surrounding recent anti-Semitic remarks. Musk’s true strategy though, according to Collins, is to somehow profit off of accumulating users through their macabre interest in watching the “crash crash” that would be Twitter. “I think he’s trying to get as many users as possible really upset on his platform, get them to see the car crash, get them crowd around it, and then see what he can do with that from then on out,” Collins claimed. The reporter closed out his report by making sure to caution viewers away from what their supposed...

It took less than eighteen hours for United States Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to politicize Saturday night's mass shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where a twenty-two-year-old man armed with an "AR-15-style rifle" murdered five people and injured eighteen others before being subdued by two courageous patrons and taken into custody. While law enforcement has yet to reveal the motive behind the heinous crime, on Sunday afternoon, Cruz – an opponent of LGBTQ+ equality and gun control – exploited the tragedy to attack Democrats over proposals to regulate firearms. Cruz's home state of Texas sees the most individual gun deaths per year out of all fifty. "Heidi and I are praying for the victims & loved ones impacted by the horrific shooting in Colorado Springs. This senseless evil needs to end," Cruz – who has raked in more gun lobby money than any other lawmaker from Texas – tweeted. "While Democrats rush to politicize before the facts are fully known, stripping law-abiding citizens of their 2nd Amendment right is wrong and will make us less safe." READ MORE:...

New York City is home to so many things people travel the world to experience, but one of my hands down favorite parts about living in the city will always be the food. From upscale restaurants to the corner deli, your stomach will never go hungry here or run out of options. However, despite the many options available, there is one particular food that many New Yorkers have made into part of their lifestyle—you guessed it—bagels. There’s an almost ~if you know, you know~ attitude that comes with the bragging rights of having these delicious fresh bagels at your disposal daily. And whether you’re a schmear or lox and tomato person, it’s a feeling you can attest to all too well. If you don’t know what I’m talking about and would like to know, I’m happy to report that you don’t have to live in the Big Apple anymore to munch on the perfect ring of dough. Intrigued? Excited? Steve Bannon still says the 2020 presidential election was rigged against former President Donald Trump, but former Republican Tim Miller insists the former Trump adviser knows it wasn’t. On this week’s The Circus on Showtime, Miller can be seen confronting Bannon in Arizona, where Trump-backed Kari Lake (R) – a former TV news anchor – is in a too-close-to-call gubernatorial race with Secretary of State Katie Hobbs (D). Lake has repeated the former president’s false election claim, which has become canon in Trumpworld. “You’re the king of the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement,” Miller told Bannon, referencing Trump’s post-election effort to overturn the results. “What are you doing here? Shouldn’t she be running away from you? Running towards the moderates trying to get the old John McCain/Jeff Flake voter?” “I think she’s gonna get that,” Bannon responded. “But what’s she doing to appeal to those voters?” he asked. “It seems like she’s running against those people.” Bannon reiterated that Lake is appealing to moderate voters. “But why is she still talking about the 2020 election?” Miller asked. “Wait ’til the House...

Saturday Night Live poked fun at the midterm elections and the urge by some conservative news media to 'dump Trump' in the aftermath, during the show's cold open. The scene opened on the set of Fox & Friends with cast members Heidi Gardner as Ainsley Earhardt, Mikey Day as Steve Doocy joined by Bowen Yang playing Brian Kilmeade.  The question asked by SNL's Fox News echoed that of real world news media: 'What happened to that red wave?' Day pondered. Just as in the real world,  Fox News and other Rupert Murdoch-owned media and publications have dumped Trump. SNL's Fox appeared to do the same while holding up some Trump-critical newspapers. Cecily Strong then returned as far-right Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, appearing on camera in a soft focus - similar to her real-life on-screen appearances.  SNL opened on the set of Fox & Friends with cast members Heidi Gardner as Ainsley Earhardt, Mikey Day as Steve Doocy joined by Bowen Yang playing Brian Kilmeade Just as in the real world Fox News and other Rupert Murdoch-owned media and publications...

When you're out to eat, sometimes it can be difficult to decide what appetizers to order. He told Eat This, Not That: "The number one appetizer to never order for me personally is any type of vegetable-focused dish that is out of season. "When I see that classic Caprese salad in the middle of winter, I avoid that at all costs, as well as when I see an asparagus in hollandaise in the summertime." For example, it may make more sense to order a meal with squash and goat cheese, or something with apples in autumn. Read More on FoodKID YOU NOT I’m a strict parent...
