(CNN)Wildfire activity in California has been notably low this year, experts tell CNN, particularly compared to 2020 and 2021 when devastating wildfires erupted across the state and burned millions of acres by the time summer ended.California has had several severe fires this year, including the Mosquito Fire, which continues to burn east of Sacramento. However, after damp spring weather and cool temperatures delayed the onset of peak fire activity, the state's overall wildfire activity has been "surprisingly benign," said Craig Clements, director of San Jose State University's Fire Weather Lab.The Mosquito Fire forced her out of her home. Days later, another blaze threatened the town where she found shelter"But we're not out of the woods yet," Clements told CNN. Hot and dry offshore winds, often referred to as the Diablo or Santa Ana winds, can trigger an enormous wildfire threat, and the wind phenomena do not tend to start until the fall and winter."If we get those big offshore wind events in Southern California like the Santa Anas, the Diablo winds in Northern California, those could lead to bigger fires," he...
Dear Amy: My husband and I had children later in life. We moved closer to our family to raise our children with relatives. Around my younger girl’s first birthday my older sister started dating a man. They are a toxic brew. I don’t like his past, which includes multiple arrests for domestic violence and robbery, and I don’t like who my sister becomes when she’s around him. They drink and have big fights. The holidays are coming up, and I don’t want this man in my life. However, I have a second sister who will be hosting the holiday events, and it will break her heart if I refuse to go because that man is in attendance. Should I suck it up and go, or stick to my conviction and celebrate the holiday with my husband and daughters? College football insider Bruce Feldman suggested on FOX Big Noon Saturday that Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin could be fired with a Week 4 loss.  It’s been one of the worst-kept secrets in college football that Auburn would like to move on from head coach Bryan Harsin. By all accounts, there was an attempted coup in January 2022 to get him out essentially without cause that was unsuccessful. But that hasn’t made his seat any less heated throughout this season so far. And now, he could be facing a situation that Herman Boone was familiar with in Remember the Titans: Lose a game and he’s fired. College football insider Bruce Feldman reported on Saturday morning while appearing on FOX Big Noon Saturday that, with an Auburn loss to Missouri in Week 4, the Tigers could look to fire Harsin as soon as Sunday. "If they get beat today by Missouri, Im told theres a really good chance they could pull the plug on Harsin as early as tomorrow."@BruceFeldmanCFB breaks down the latest updates on Bryan Harsins future as Auburns Head Coach...
Kansas City Chiefs rookie Skyy Moore received just two snaps in the team’s Week 2 victory, but he should get more moving forward. Just two games into Moore’s career, and Chiefs fans are left wondering if they wasted a draft pick. Settle down, people. Moore earned his second-round selection, as the small-school Western Michigan wide receiver put up impressive measurements at the scouting combine and in team workouts. His time will come, and it should come soon. “I guarantee you he’ll see more than two snaps throughout the course of the season as we continue to move forward, because the kid brings a lot to the table,” Eric Bieniemy said, per the Kansas City Star. “Obviously, he’s doing a great job on special teams, but also too, it’s time for us to make sure that we allow him to be the player that he needs to become as a receiver as well.” If Chiefs give Skyy Moore snaps, who should lose them?If Kansas City does indeed give Moore extra snaps, perhaps a reliable veteran needs to lose them. The Bills got brutal news on star safety Micah Hyde, who will be out for the season after suffering a neck injury. With Hyde placed on injured reserve and out for the rest of the season, Buffalo will need to replace their star safety by committee. Jordan Poyer will surely play a massive role in the communication at that position, but he can only do so much. Poyer missed practice this week, but is listed as questionable on the depth chart. Against Miami, Buffalo could be very shorthanded in their secondary. “We’re just going to take [Poyer’s status] one day at a time,” coach Sean McDermott said at a news conference Friday. “He’s one of those that are in that group in there, we’ve got a couple of those guys, maybe three or four, that remains to be seen what they’ll be able to get done on Sunday. I’ll know a little bit more today. It may not still be definitive after today, but we’ll take it one day at a time.” Bills: Who must step up with Micah Hyde...
(CNN)The threatening letters began in March 2007.They came in the mail to Eva LaRue's Southern California house -- sometimes handwritten, sometimes typed -- from an unknown sender who called himself "Freddie Krueger" and vowed to rape and kill her and her young daughter. The letters -- more than three dozen of them -- kept on coming for more than 12 years, a relentless psychological assault that made the "CSI: Miami" actress and her family afraid to step outside their home. Early on, some letters mentioned LaRue's daughter, then 5. But in 2015, letters began arriving addressed to the child. The stalker also began calling LaRue's daughter's school, saying that he was her father and was outside to pick her up. But with the help of genetic genealogy, a science that was used for the first time in California to capture the Golden State Killer, the FBI in 2019 was able to take DNA from the envelopes and run it through a database, yielding a list of the suspect's relatives. This eventually led them to a small town in Ohio, where they...

It began almost as soon as he stepped onto the plane. As Emerson Collins, a film producer and nonprofit director, boarded his American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Dallas on Sept. 6, a bizarre noise from the plane’s intercom system flooded the cabin: a loud groan — or was it a moan? — laced with pain — or was it pleasure? It was difficult to discern. “It was either someone’s unfortunate food poisoning in the bathroom or, like, someone with an uncomfortable approach to personal satisfaction,” Collins said. “Literally, it was halfway between an orgasm and vomiting.” Passengers seemed confused but also amused, he said. By the third guttural outburst, Collins joked with a flight attendant about the pilot, asking “Is he OK?” Flight attendants announced that there was no cause for concern and that the sounds weren’t coming from the crew, Collins said. He shrugged it off. But then it happened again just after takeoff. And several times after that. For the first half-hour of the flight, the noise returned every two to three minutes, Collins...
If former President Donald Trump decides to enter the 2024 presidential race, his campaign journey will be far different than most. Trump's time on the campaign trail would likely include ongoing legal battles in several courts across the country. Now, analysts are weighing in with their take on the road ahead for the former president. "The long-running panoply of investigations into Trump – over his business practices, his handling of classified information, his efforts to overturn his election loss in 2020, and his role in the insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021 – will burden any 2024 presidential run by the former chief executive," analysts said, per USA Today's David Jackson. Share this: ON THIS DAY IN 1929, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Stocks were again uncertain today. Several waves of buying and selling swept over the market from time to time and lifted or depressed stocks over a two to five-point range. Most of the leading stocks, like U.S. Steel, American Can, Allied Chemical, and American Telephone and Telegraph, were up two to five points at noonday, but at the beginning of the last hour they had lost all the gains and many were at new low prices for the day. Motor stocks were under steady pressure from the start, and many of them hit new bottom prices for the year. Short covering lifted them slightly occasionally, but new selling again appeared. Utilities were strong in spots, with Columbia Gas, Consolidated Gas and Foreign Power among those to show gains of several points or more. Money was easy at 8 percent and in good supply at that figure and most of the day’s news was cheerful. Selling was attributed in part to investment trusts, the public and bearish professionals. JIM WATSON/AFP via Getty Images Chris Christie chastised former President Donald Trump Thursday over his claim a day earlier a president is capable of declassifying documents simply by “thinking about it.” Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday he was not in possession of any classified documents seized by the FBI at his home in August. Trump said he declassified all government documents at his residence. “If you’re the president of the United States, you can declassify just by saying, ‘It’s declassified,’ even by thinking about it because you’re sending it to Mar-a-Lago or wherever you’re sending it,” Trump claimed. “There can be a process, but there doesn’t have to be,” he added. “You’re the president. You make that decision. So when you send it, it’s declassified. I declassified everything.” The statement generated widespread mockery, and Christie –  a former Trump confidante – was no exception. The New York Post reported the former Republican governor of New Jersey spoke for an hour at a business convention in New York Thursday. “We have a former president of the United...
The trans high school teacher in Canada who is flaunting oversize prosthetic breasts will have to tone down her revealing wardrobe if school board members get their way. Kayla Lemieux, a tech teacher at Oakville Trafalgar High School in an upscale residential neighborhood roughly 25 miles west of Toronto, has garnered global attention after photos and video appeared on social media showing her eye-popping fake breasts. Under pressure from fuming parents, the Halton District School Board (HDSB) issued a statement to explain that its hands are tied due to the province's Human Rights Code. And students seem to be behind the move. Several joined a small protest outside the school Friday, with one declaring: 'This is a school, not a circus. We just want to learn.'  A motion was put forward at a school board meeting Wednesday to consider altering the dress code – which could mean that Lemieux may have to ditch the fabric-stretching prosthetic breasts, which sell online for as much as $1,000. The show has seen a resurgence since the subject of its first season, Adnan Syed, was released from prison. In 2014, the podcast went viral for its coverage of the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, an 18-year-old high school student. Lee’s ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was convicted of her murder in 2000 and sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years. The podcast, hosted by Sarah Koenig detailed the case and opened the door to the idea that there was more to the story than what was revealed to the public. Syed has always maintained his innocence. On Monday, it was announced that Syed would be released from prison after 23 years. The prosecutors of the case said, “the state no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction.” Following Serial is The Daily, Funny Cuz It’s True with Elyse Myers, Dateline NBC, and Morbid. Sundar Pichai told employees angered about recent cuts to travel and entertainment budgets, as well as potential layoffs, that the company was preparing for tough economic times, according to leaked audio of a company meeting obtained by CNBC.  'We shouldn't always equate fun with money,' Pichai, who makes an estimated 6.3 million dollars in salary per year and estimated worth is $1.31 billion, told employees upset at losing their perks.  'We're committed to taking care of our employees,' he added. 'I think we're just working through a tough moment macroeconomically, and I think it's important we as a company align and work together.'  The billionaire CEO added that hiring and investments will slow at Google, which comes just a week after the company canceled its next-generation laptop and reorganized 50 employees following major cuts to its incubator program.  Google CEO Sundar Pichai warned employees 'not to equate money with fun' as he said the...

CNN legal analyst Elie Honig dragged the Department of Justice over its sex trafficking investigation into Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL). On Friday, the Washington Post reported that federal prosecutors are unlikely to charge Gaetz after a lengthy investigation into whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and trafficked her across state lines. In 2020, prosecutors reached a plea deal with Gaetz associate and Seminole County tax collector Joel Greenberg, who appeared poised to be a key witness against the congressman. That no longer seems to be the case. “This is a surprising outcome and I’ll tell you why,” said Honig on CNN Friday. “We don’t know exactly what evidence DOJ has behind closed doors. We don’t know how prosecutors are weighing that. Perhaps it’s a close call.” Honig, a former federal prosecutor, ripped prosecutors for giving Greenberg a “sweetheart deal” only to come to the conclusion he’s an unreliable witness: But here’s what really I find confusing and surprising and really bordering on prosecutorial malpractice. The reporting that we have is that the reason this case isn’t...

Miami-Dade County’s high schools saw the number of their alumni on NFL rosters to start the 2022 season fall precipitously from the same time last year. Where the county renowned for its football talent boasted 36 players in 2021 after Week 1, that number crashed to 23 this year, a 36.1% plummet. Further, the county directly to the north is starting to dominate Miami-Dade, with Broward having 55 opening-weekend players drawing an NFL paycheck. That total is a jaw-dropping 139.1% larger than the not-even-two-dozen players from Miami-Dade. The opening-weekend players from Miami-Dade hailed from 12 schools and could be found on 14 teams, with the Buffalo Bills leading the way with four players. Here is the list, in alphabetical order by last name of the players, who were either on the 53-man roster, the practice squad or on an injured list. At the end, there is a listing of how many come from each school and are on each NFL team. The epitaph for this Chicago White Sox season was delivered Wednesday night by starter Lance Lynn. “Nothing surprises me, especially when you play like (bleep) all year,” Lynn said after a loss to the Cleveland Guardians in one of their worst performances all year. The three-game sweep by the Guardians put the Sox on the brink of elimination, and soon we’ll find out what they’ll do to ensure next year is not a repeat. As everyone knows by now, the Sox don’t operate like most teams. Sometimes who you know is as important as anything else in getting — and keeping — a job in this organization. So who will stay and who will go is anyone’s guess. General manager Rick Hahn is on the hottest of hot seats, in spite of a rebuild that seemed to be on target until the regression this year under a manager he didn’t choose. With the end of the season at hand, here’s a look at some of the key personnel who presumably will be evaluated by executive vice president Ken Williams and,...

Political comedian Bill Maher doesn’t mince words when laying out the reasons why the United States’ 2024 election worries him so much. The host of “Real Time” on HBO has been predicting that former President Donald Trump will run for president in 2024, receive the GOP nomination, refuse to concede if he loses and make another coup d’état attempt — only this time, Maher warns, he will be better equipped to pull it off than he was in 2020. In that type of scenario, Maher fears a full-blown constitutional crisis combined with violence and unrest. Inauguration Day 2025, Maher told CNN in 2021, would be a good time to be on vacation in London. One thing that could derail a 2024 campaign from Trump, according to Maher, is a criminal indictment. But during an interview with ITK on Thursday, September 22, Maher warned that such a prosecution would likely result in violence from Trump supporters — although allowing another coup attempt in 2024/2025 could result in violence as well.
