"We started off with basically taking very broad index funds — SPY [SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust] was the first one — and then the industry over the years built all these interesting overlays," Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, told Bob Pisani on CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. Included were sector and emerging funds, as well as funds specified to themes such as clean energy and legal marijuana, Colas said, as part of a shift from disruptive innovation to mainstream. A billionaire New York hedge fund manager has come up with an unusual suggestion for reducing inflation - recommending that the U.S. government bring down wage costs by welcoming in more migrants. Bill Ackman, who as CEO of investment firm Pershing Square Capital Management is worth an estimated $3.2 billion, said that the current tactics employed by the government to bring down inflation were 'a blunt tool' and not effective. Inflation is currently at a 14-year high at 8.26 percent, and on Wednesday the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates by another 0.75 percentage points - its fifth interest rate increase since March. Jerome Powell, the chair of the Fed, said there was no 'painless way' to dampen inflation. Ackman, however, said he had a solution. 'Inflation can be mitigated by reducing demand and/or by increasing supply,' he tweeted. 'The @federalreserve can only reduce demand by raising rates, a very blunt tool. Wage inflation will likely continue until rates rise to restrictive levels. 'Doesn't it make more sense to moderate wage inflation with increased immigration than by raising rates, destroying demand,...

Scientists have now estimated that the global population of ants around the world is 20 quadrillion or 2.5 million per person. The number was officially published in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences after scientists combed through 489 published studies that surveyed the number of ants in a given environment. Source: BBC Earth/YouTube “It’s unimaginable,” Patrick Schultheiss, a lead author of the study, told The Washington Post. “We simply cannot imagine 20 quadrillion ants in one pile, for example. It just doesn’t work.” The number 20,000,000,000,000,000 means that there are 2.5 million ants per single human being on earth. “We estimated that 20 quadrillion average-sized ants corresponds to a dry weight or ‘biomass’ of approximately 12 million tonnes of carbon,” the authors said. They estimated that if all of the ants were taken out of the ground and dried up, they would weigh more than all of the wild birds and wild mammals combined. They would also be as heavy as one-fifth of the dry weight of all humans. Ants are crucial for a...

The number of migrants on the US terror watch list crossing illegally over the southern border has gone up by 400 percent from last year, with an expert warning that a violent extremist may already be in America planning an attack.   US Customs and Border Protection reported that 78 immigrants on the US terror watch list have been apprehended crossing over the border last year, nearly four times as much as the 15 in 2021.  Last year's report was up from three in 2020, with the US previously reporting zero in 2019, six in 2018, and just two in 2017.  Todd Bensman, of the Center for Immigration Studies who has written extensively on this issue at the southern border, blamed the Biden administration's border policies for the surge in violent terrorists attempting to cross into the US.  He also warned that after two terrorist suspects were wrongfully released into the US following attempts to cross the border earlier this year, it is more than likely that a violent extremist has already made a successful entry.  'I wouldn't be surprised if...

Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney has introduced her own version of legislation to reform the Electoral Count Act that she says would prevent future attempts by former President Trump or others to try to 'steal' a presidential election.  The legislation, which follows a separate effort in the Senate, comes after experts identified ambiguities in the 1887, which sets out the procedures for certifying and counting the electoral votes for president. White House economic adviser Jared Bernstein sparred with Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum on Monday over inflation. MacCallum aired a clip of President Joe Biden’s interview with 60 Minutes that aired on Sunday, where Scott Pelley questioned Biden’s economic policies, given that inflation is up 8.3% as of August year over year. “You’re not arguing that 8.3 is good news?” Pelley said. “No, I’m not saying it is good news,” Biden replied. “It was 8.2 before. You’re making it sound like all of a sudden, ‘My God, it went to 8.2%.'” “It’s the highest inflation rate, Mr. President, in 40 years,” Pelley shot back. “I got that,” Biden responded. “But guess what we are? We’re in a position for the last several months it hasn’t spiked. It is just barely — it’s basically even.” MacCallum asked Bernstein for his reaction. “So, the White House argument is that people are supposed to feel good about the fact that it’s even, even though the core number went up six tenths, which as you know concerned a lot of economists when they dug...

Experts have warned that Joe Biden's deal to give rail workers a pay increase to avoid major shutdowns on Friday could lead to more large settlements in the future.  The Biden administration reached a tentative deal on Thursday to raise rail employees' salaries by 24 percent, but labor experts say the deal could serve as a measure of success for future strikers.  'This is a very, very contentious time,' Michael Lotito, co-chairman of the Workplace Policy Institute at Littler, told the Wall Street Journal. 'I think that is going to embolden unions to ask for more.' The prediction comes as Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) reported that the number of strikers in the US has tripled to 78,000 in the first-half of 2022 compared to the same period last year.  Michael Lotito (left), co-chairman of the Workplace Policy Institute at Littler, warned that Joe Biden's deal to raise rail employees' salaries by 24 percent to avoid a shutdown could be used as a measure of success by future strikers  In the first half of 2022, there have been 180...

Getty Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has his team one step closer to a playoff berth. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts made his first four starts in a No. 2 midnight green jersey. It was the number he proudly donned at Oklahoma. But Hurts always had his eye on a different number, the one he made famous at Alabama. He really wanted to rock the No. 1 so when punter Cameron Johnston left the building, Hurts wasted no time in grabbing it. Some saw the jersey switch as a statement, that Hurts was now the undisputed QB1 following the trade of Carson Wentz. It’s a good story, but that wasn’t the reason. “I always grew up wearing No. 2 because of my brother,” Hurts explained. “I always wore No. 2 but when I went to Oklahoma, obviously CeeDee Lamb wore No. 2, and he offered to give me the number but I didn’t want it, too much respect for him as a player so I ended up wearing No. 1 and I liked how it looked on me so...

There are more members of Congress over the age of 70 in 2022 than any year prior, a new chart shows. According to an analysis by Business Insider, the number of septuagenarians serving in the House of Representatives and Senate more than doubled across two decades. In 2002 just 8 percent were above 70, while today the share is 23 percent. And while nearly half the US population is under 40, just 5 percent of Congress falls under the same age range. The shocking data is a reflection of increasingly frustrated young voters who have been calling for generational change in leadership - all while leaders themselves are serving longer terms and awarding each other senior roles. Senators like Chuck Grassley and Dianne Feinstein have signaled they have no plans to retire yet despite being just shy of 90 years old - an age that's higher than the average life expectancy for most Americans. They're just two of 21 members in their 80s.  But the gap hasn't always been so significant. The median age for a Congressional lawmaker grew 10...
