Federal Reserve officials saw 'little evidence' late last month that US inflation is easing and predicted it would remain elevated for 'some time', newly released minutes from July's policy meeting show. The minutes released on Wednesday showed policymakers committed to raising rates as high as necessary to bring inflation under control, and acknowledging that they would have accept lower economic growth for that to happen.  Inflation has been running hot and remained near a 40-year high at 8.5 percent in July, despite a rapid series of jumbo interest hikes that have taken the Fed's policy rate from near zero to 2.5 percent. The minutes from the July 26 to 27 policy meeting did not hint at a particular pace of future interest rate increases for future meetings, including the next one scheduled for late September.  Federal Reserve officials saw 'little evidence' late last month that US inflation pressures were easing and predicted it would remain elevated for 'some time' Fed policymakers noted in the minutes that lower growth could 'set the stage' for inflation to gradually fall to...

Explaining its decision, the company — one of several in England and Wales to have announced water usage limits in recent weeks — said extreme temperatures and this summer's heatwave had resulted in the highest demand for water in more than 25 years. "The driest July since 1885, the hottest temperatures on record, and the River Thames reaching its lowest level since 2005 have led to a drop in reservoir levels in the Thames Valley and London," it said.More from...

Climate change is putting Californians at risk of a massive flood that would cost $1 trillion in damage, displace millions of residents and submerge parts of Los Angeles and Sacramento, according to a new study. SOCIAL Security beneficiaries may see an additional $159 in their monthly checks, according to the latest estimates. Experts are predicting a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of anywhere from 9.3% to 10.1%. 1A large COLA increase could push recipients out of assistance programsCredit: Getty The US Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday said inflation rose by 8.5% in the year to July - down from 9.1% in June. As prices increase, Social Security claimants are given a benefit boost to help them keep up, meaning it's not necessarily good news. The COLA depends on the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers (CPI-W) in the third quarter. But researchers at MIT have taken it to a new level. They claim to have created an artificial neural network capable of working millions of times faster than humans. This feat would have been achieved using an “analog” neural network. But what is the point of creating artificial neurons? To understand this, we should already go to the concept of “neural network”. Millions of people in America are receiving healthcare that rivals Third World standards. Vast regions of the country have seen medical services evaporate over the past decade. Hospitals have closed, doctors have left, and pharmacies have been forced into bankruptcy. In this series, Dried Up: America's Medical Deserts, the Washington Examiner will investigate what happened to these now-barren terrains. Without adequate access to a hospital, a primary care center, an OB-GYN, or other specialized medical services, the health of an estimated 30 million people is put in jeopardy. When Julie Perkins bought Batson's Drug Store in 1995, business was booming. "Back then, pharmacy was an easy way to make money," she told the Washington Examiner. "It was easy to stay in business. I didn't have to stay awake at night figuring out how I was going to make payroll each week. It was easy before there were pharmacy benefit managers in the middle. You could make a decent living." Now, it's not so easy.  Batson's is the last pharmacy standing in Elk County, Kansas, a rural area with a population hovering around the 2,500...

While Roomba vacuums perform a similar function, consumers are more skeptical about privacy and data harvesting concerns related to Amazon's Astro. Amazon has already received backlash after giving Ring footage to law enforcement without permission from the owners. Since January 2022, law enforcement worldwide has submitted around 30,000 subpoenas, search warrants, and court order requests to Amazon for user data. The tech company admitted to providing authorities with Ring footage without a warrant. Last month, Politico reported that Ring is partnered with 2,161 police departments across the country to utilize a video-sharing app, Neighbors. The app allows users to upload their Ring footage for authorities to access with their permission. Evan Greer, director of the nonprofit digital rights organization Fight for the Future, stated that Amazon wants to "have its hands everywhere," reported WIRED. "People tend to think of Amazon as an online seller company, but really Amazon is a surveillance company. That is the core of its business model, and that's what drives its monopoly power and profit." In response to consumer concerns about data privacy, Amazon...
“Districts were really in the dark about what to do,” Marguerite Roza, director of the Edunomics Lab research center at Georgetown University, told the Daily Beast. “They were just on the phone, trying to buy buy buy.” Results from the scanners were all over the board. “It’s like a random number generator,” said Conor Healy, a surveillance expert at research organization IPVM. Schools began questioning the validity of the scanners as false positives proliferated during the warmer months. And a recent study of the scanners found that the software used in many of the devices often can make a feverish person appear healthy. As early as March 2021, researchers were questioning the efficacy of these devices. IPVM warned that the scanners were dangerously ineffective, raising the risk that infected people could be passed through screening checkpoints and unknowingly spread the virus. The Food and Drug Administration went as far as issuing a public alert warning that improper use of the devices could “present potentially serious public health risks.” “There’s a real problem of accountability here on every level,” said Healy.
