An old and rusted pipeline near New Orleans broke open and spilled more than 300,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the local ecosystem, according to newly released federal records. The fuel flowing through the Meraux Pipeline, operated by Collins Pipeline Company, drained into two artificial ponds on private property on Dec. 27. The fuel killed thousands of fish, birds, and other animals and contaminated the soil of an environmentally sensitive area in the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet. The breach occurred after a 22-foot-long portion of the 42-year-old Meraux Pipeline had lost most of its metal to corrosion, requiring immediate repair, the Associated Press reported. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A severely corroded pipeline ruptured and spilled more than 300,000 gallons (1 million liters) of diesel fuel just outside New Orleans, according to federal records. The spill from the 16-inch (40-centimeter) diameter line operated by Collins Pipeline Co. was discovered Dec. 27 near a levee in St. Bernard Parish, just east of New Orleans, according to documents from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. In October 2020, an inspection of the 42-year-old pipeline had revealed external corrosion along a 22-foot (7-meter) section of pipe in the same area as the spill. But repairs were delayed and the line continued operating after a subsequent inspection indicated the corrosion was not bad enough to require work immediately under federal regulations, according to the pipeline agency. The spilled fuel contaminated soil and created a large pool of diesel in an environmentally sensitive area just a few hundred feet from the Mississippi River, the documents show. An estimated 50,000 gallons (227,000 liters) of diesel were later recovered and cleanup of the remaining fuel is ongoing, the documents show....

By Paradise Afshar and Forrest Brown | CNN Think of it as laissez les bons temps rouler — but with precautions. New Orleans will reinstate its indoor mask mandate starting Wednesday morning to address rising Covid-19 infections and hospitalizations in the city. This is something visitors as well as residents will want to keep in mind as the city begins its Carnival season. The mandate, which begins at 6 a.m. Wednesday, applies to all indoor spaces, including schools, and is expected to remain in place “until further notice,” Dr. Jennifer Avegno, the director of the New Orleans Health Department, said during a news conference on Tuesday. “We strongly recommend a high-quality mask, and by that, I mean a surgical mask, KN95 or N95, to provide the most robust protection,” Avegno said. With Carnival season gearing up, Avegno said New Orleans is “at risk in a way that no other big city is.” New Orleans currently has a positivity rate of just under 32% and is awaiting the shipment of additional tests for residents. “This is a simple step, putting masks...
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans will reinstitute an indoor mask mandate to fight the spread of COVID-19 while readying for an influx of visitors for the Mardi Gras season, the city health director said Tuesday. Dr. Jennifer Avegno said the mandate takes effect Wednesday at 6 a.m. and will apply to participants in the annual Mardi Gras balls that take place in the city. Avegno said Louisiana’s statewide coronavirus daily hospitalization numbers have grown in three weeks “by a factor of seven.” She said those cases have put a strain on hospitals, with emergency room waits as long as 12 hours in some facilities. Growing numbers of coronavirus cases, driven by the omicron variant can affect treatment for people seeking treatment for other illnesses or injuries, Avegno said. And, while Avegno said she’s hoping cases will subside in coming weeks, she added hospitalizations and deaths show up weeks after cases are reported. That could mean continued pressure from coronavirus cases about the time emergency rooms face an annua uptick in patient numbers as Mardi Gras nears and tourists, some...

Mandatory Credit: Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports The New Orleans Saints were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 18. Here are three members of the organization who likely won’t return in 2022. The New Orleans Saints, despite the multitude of injuries they had to deal with throughout the season, had a chance to clinch a playoff spot in Week 18. All they had to do was defeat the Atlanta Falcons and for the San Francisco 49ers to lose to the Los Angeles Rams. New Orleans held up their end of the bargain, as they defeated Atlanta 30-20. However, the Rams choked at the end of regulation, paving way for the 49ers to pull out the 27-24 win in overtime. As a result, the 49ers are in the playoffs, while the Saints are out. The Saints are set to have yet another important offseason, considering how they are slated to be approximately $62 million over...

It’s no secret the importance of Steph Curry to the Warriors offense. No denying Draymond Green’s distributor, facilitator and defensive maven. When one is in a purple T-shirt and the other in a track suit, it’s never more apparent. Next to them, Klay Thompson sat and watched and thought about the next time he would be on the court, playing alongside them. It will happen within weeks, maybe days. But Thursday night in New Orleans, all the three of them could do was sit and watch a 101-96 loss. Faced with at least one more game before their title-winning trio is together again, the Warriors lost its second straight for the first time since last season. Without Curry (bruised quad) and Green (sore hip), they re-inserted Jordan Poole to the starting lineup and relied on Andrew Wiggins’ continued resurgence. Wiggins, as aggressive as ever, led the way with 21 points. But 49 points off the bench, led by 13 from Jonathan Kuminga and 12 from Damion Lee, couldn’t make up for a team missing two of its...
By Kevin McGill | Associated Press NEW ORLEANS — Vaccinated, masked and ready-to-revel New Orleans residents began ushering in Carnival season Thursday with plans for a rolling party on the city’s historic streetcar line, an annual march honoring Joan of Arc in the French Quarter and a collective, wary eye on coronavirus statistics. Carnival officially begins each year on Jan. 6 — the 12th day after Christmas — and, usually, comes to a raucous climax on Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, which falls on March 1 this year. Thursday’s planned festivities come two years after a successful Mardi Gras became what officials later realized was an early Southern superspreader of COVID-19; and nearly a year after city officials canceled 2021 parades. This year, the party is going on despite rapidly rising COVID-19 cases driven by the omicron variant. “Without a doubt, we will have Mardi Gras 2022,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said during a Thursday morning kickoff event, where participants removed protective masks long enough to sample slices of king cake, a seasonal delicacy. “Having a Mardi...

While the Warriors attempt to avoid their first losing streak of the season, they’ll have to do so against the New Orleans Pelicans without their top two players: Steph Curry and Draymond Green both got the night off. On the second night of back-to-back games, the Warriors traded in Curry, Green and Juan Toscano-Anderson for Otto Porter Jr. and Andre Iguodala, who were both available Thursday after missing the previous night’s loss at Dallas. Curry was ruled out with a quad that he bruised Wednesday, while Green appeared alongside him with a sore left hip and Toscano-Anderson with a sore ankle. Golden State hasn’t lost two in a row since April 29 of last season — a streak that spans 46 games — but after a 99-82 loss Wednesday against the Mavericks will take its chances against a Pelicans team that occupies the second-to-last spot in the Western Conference standings. After Wednesday’s loss, Curry said he was “not optimistic” about playing with the quad contusion, while Kerr said “there’s a chance” that he wouldn’t play. Green,...

CNN’s New Year’s Even special featured Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper hosting from Times Square for the ball drop. But like Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, the CNN show had a secondary celebration in New Orleans. Both locations had some out of hand moments. The most talked about from the New York hosts was Cohen going on a shot-fueled rampage against outgoing mayor Bill de Blasio. But in New Orleans, Don Lemon, Alisyn Camerota, and comedian Dulcé Sloan had more than a few Twitter-clip-ready moments. So much so they’re still trending at noon on New Year’s Day. One in particular is really taking the web by storm, featuring both Lemon and Sloan saying the phrase “broke dick” multiple times, in the context of resolutions for the New Year. A transcript would really detract from the ambience, you have to just watch the clip. It might leave you saying what Anderson Cooper said after Don Lemon talked to Dulcé Sloan about her family in Georgia, in another clip that defies transcription: “I don’t know what’s happening,” said Cooper. The Miami Dolphins’ transformation from an NFL doormat to legitimate playoff contender is complete. Miami, which began this season 1-7, is in possession of a winning record courtesy of Monday night’s 20-3 win over the New Orleans Saints, putting Brian Flores’ team in position to qualify for the postseason if Miami (8-7) can win its final two games of the regular season. Skeptics will criticize the caliber of opponents the Dolphins beat, and the talent level of the quarterbacks the team has faced during its seven-game winning streak. But they can’t discredit the position this team has put itself in, making the season’s finish interesting. Here are some more takeaways from Monday’s win over the Saints: Win puts Miami in possession of a winning record While it wasn’t a pretty victory, especially considering the amount of Saints players (21) who missed the game because of COVID-19 protocols, Monday night’s victory delivered something the Dolphins haven’t had since Week 1 of the season. It gave the Dolphins, who have won seven straight games, a winning record...
Seven straight wins. Feeling great? And healthy? That’s what matters now. The Dolphins’ easy Monday night win over New Orleans, 20-3, kept their second-half streak going and underlined how a season can be ruined by a COVID test right now. Here are 10 thoughts on the game: 1. Stat of the game: 21 Saints players were out due to COVID restrictions. Here’s a legitimate question: Why wasn’t this game postponed? Cleveland had 22 players out with the virus and its game was suspended two days (from a Saturday to Monday). Was it the fact it was already at Monday night game? Whatever, this was a competitive embarrassment for the league with one team without nearly half its players. Especially against a good Dolphins defense, the Saints had no chance playing their fourth-string quarterback and a patchwork offensive line. The defensive front seven had no reserves. The Saints were signing players Monday just to fill out the 45-man roster. They had one (1) player inactive for the game rather than the requisite list of seven practice players....
(CNN)The Miami Dolphins' hot streak continued to burn brightly with a comfortable 20-3 win against the New Orleans Saints at the Caesars Superdome on Monday Night Football. The Dolphins have managed to play their way back into the postseason picture and in doing so have created a little piece of NFL history. Monday's victory in New Orleans, Louisiana, ensured the Dolphins became the first team in NFL history to have a seven-game losing streak and a seven-game winning run in the same season. The last time the Dolphins won seven successive games was back in 1985.Without 22 players due to Covid-19 protocols, the Saints handed Ian Book his NFL debut at quarterback, but the 23-year-old had a tough evening as the Dolphins defense racked up eight sacks against him. Omar Kelly, Dolphins Columnist It’s been a long, arduous journey, but the Dolphins have finally rebounded from their 1-7 start and are in possession of a winning record. Say whatever you want about this team’s poor start, and the caliber of opponents and quarterbacks they have played during this seven-game winning streak, but no matter how you slice it this rebound from being terrible to playoff contender is impressive. David Furones, Dolphins Writer This appears to be the formula for the Dolphins right now. Let the defense dominate, don’t make (too many) mistakes on offense while creating just enough plays. What a remarkable turnaround to go from seven straight losses to seven consecutive wins, but now come the true tests after beating this COVID-depleted New Orleans team. Miami has to come through at the Tennessee Titans and in a home finale against the New England Patriots to secure this playoff berth. Keven Lerner, Assistant Sports Editor The Dolphins, fueled by a first-half pick-six and an overpowering defense, now head to Nashville to face ex-Miami QB...

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A critically endangered Sumatran orangutan in New Orleans has given birth to a healthy male baby, but his twin brother died in the womb, officials at the Audubon Zoo said Monday. Twelve-year-old Menari gave birth to the first baby without trouble on Christmas Eve and was mothering it appropriately, but she was having problems after that, according to a news release. A team of on-call medical professionals was brought in, including local OBGYN and neonatology specialists who usually treat humans. Menari was anesthetized, and ultrasound showed that the second baby was dead and badly positioned. The team was able to remove it without a Cesarean section, the zoo said. The great apes named for their long red hair are considered critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Threats include hunting and the destruction of the forests and peat swamps where they spend nearly all their time up in trees. Fewer than 14,000 live in the wild and their numbers are declining as palm oil plantations spread into their forest...
