Rup Chandra Rumba was a 27-year-old scaffolder from Nepal working on a World Cup 2022 stadium site when, in 2019, he died of ‘cardio respiratory failure due to natural cause’. Mr Rumba, who had a medical certificate saying he was healthy, died in accommodation not cleared as fit for human habitation. Through no fault of his own, he had been deployed by an unauthorised firm called Maskey Contracting. These two breaches of Qatar’s ‘Workers’ Welfare Standards’ are recorded in the country’s official records. Months later, Mr Rumba’s widow Nirmala Pakhrin received a letter from Hassan Al Thawadi, the head of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy that is in charge of arranging this winter’s World Cup. Mr Rumba’s widow was told she was not entitled to compensation because her husband had been in Qatar less than a year, but Al Thawadi said his ‘team’ had talked to Maskey and a ‘good faith’ payment of £1,500 from the firm had been arranged. The Mail on Sunday asked the Supreme Committee who specifically had been held to account for the welfare...
Investigators work to exhume bodies from a mass burial site in Ukraine.Pavel Nemecek/AP Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. On Friday, investigators working for the United Nations delivered a sobering statement to the UN Human Rights Council detailing evidence of Russian war crimes committed as part of the nation’s ongoing occupation of Ukraine, including the rape of children, torture, beatings, electric shocks, forced nudity, and the disappearance of people taken into Russian detention. These findings came as part of the first official update from three experts who were asked to investigate allegations of war crimes that first arose this spring, soon after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Their investigation focused on four areas of Ukraine—Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Sumy—where horrific reports of alleged war crimes, including the rape of civilians and summary executions, began to emerge between late February and March of this year as Russia began its war. Friday’s report is the first from the UN to bring forth extensive evidence backing up these allegations, including through interviews with dozens...

Fraudsters stole more than $45 billion in unlawful unemployment claims during the pandemic, the Labor Department concluded on Thursday - while warning that the actual figure may be even higher. Criminals used inventive measures to access the COVID benefits, with more than 205,000 Social Security numbers that belonged to dead people being used to claim the cash. Some schemes saw the Social Security numbers of prisoners being used, despite them being ineligible for the unemployment benefits. The latest figure is more than double the earlier estimate, issued by the Labor Department last year, when they concluded that $16 billion had been stolen. Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat representing Oregon who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, said the new report proved the urgency of improving security checks on unemployment benefits. 'I've long said we need a national set of technology and security standards for state systems to better prevent this kind of fraud, and we're going to keep working to get our reforms passed,' he said. MOST drivers fill their cars with gas and don’t think about how their fuel pump automatically shuts off. But a fascinating design helps gas pumps achieve this convenient automated response. 2Gas pump mechanics are mechanical and more straightforward than you may imagineCredit: YouTube/Steve Mould A gas pump’s operation is entirely mechanical. When you pull on a gas pump’s handle, a lever opens a valve within the handle allowing fuel to flow into and through a thin tube to your tank. The end of this tube is open, which causes air to move back into the gas pump during a refill, Steve Mould reports. Once your gas tank is filled, the tube starts sucking in gas instead of air. The View co-hosts laughed out loud mocking former President Donald Trump for saying that documents can be declassified “even by thinking about it.” Thursday’s The View played a soundbite of Fox News host Sean Hannity’s Wednesday interview with Trump, who defended taking classified documents to Mar-a-Lago, which was raided by the FBI last month over Trump and his people allegedly not handing them back over to the National Archives in a timely manner and over the fear that sources and methods could be put at risk. “If you’re the president of the United States you can declassify just by saying it’s declassified, even by thinking about it because you’re sending it to Mar-a-Lago or to wherever you’re sending it, and it doesn’t have to be a process,” he said. After playing the soundbite, co-host Whoopi Goldberg looked like she was meditating. “What are you doing, Whoopi?” asked co-host Joy Behar. “I’m thinking him into jail,” Goldberg said after a couple of moments, prompting laughter from her co-hosts. “You can just think about stuff,” said co-host Sunny Hostin. “Just think about…,”...

During an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity at Mar-a-Lago, which was raided last month by the FBI in search of classified documents, former President Donald Trump claimed the president can declassify material “even by thinking about it.” When Hannity asked about the declassification process, Trump replied: “There doesn’t have to be a process, as I understand it.” “Different people see different things. But as I understand it, there doesn’t have to be. If you’re the president of the United States, you can declassify just by saying it’s declassified. Even by thinking about it,” he asserted. “It doesn’t have to be a process. It can be a process but it doesn’t have to be. You’re the president. You make that decision. So when you send it [to Mar-a-Lago or “wherever”], it’s declassified. We — I declassified everything,” Trump insisted, even though his lawyers have not made that claim in court. On another legal front, Trump was accused earlier Wednesday, along with his three oldest children, of business and tax fraud in a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General...
Donald Trump claimed the president of the United States can declassify government documents simply by declaring them as such, or “even by thinking about it.” In August, FBI agents executed a search warrant at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where they found thousands of government documents Trump was supposed to give to the National Archives upon leaving office. Some of the material is classified. Trump has publicly claimed he declassified all the documents. However, his attorneys have not dared to make that claim in court as they tangle with lawyers from the Department of Justice in the case. Appearing on Wednesday’s Hannity, Trump told Sean Hannity he declassified the documents and that there isn’t much to the process – or lack thereof – as he understands it. “A president has the power to declassify,” the Fox News host stated. “You have said on Truth Social a number of times you did declassify.” “I did declassify, yes,” Trump said. “Is there a process?” Hannity asked. “What was your process?” “There doesn’t have to be a process as I understand...

He is seen dressed casually in a t-shirt absolutely belting out the lyrics to the famous song in a fashion that would really have been better suited for a late-night karaoke bar than a lobby in public view, as mourners gathered to honor the most respected and admired woman in the United Kingdom's modern history. This month, Australian academics launched a world-first app to guide parents to the 'just right' day for their children, helping them understand which combination of activities can best help mental, physical and academic outcomes. Assessing data from 1685 children aged 11-12 from the Australian Child Health CheckPoint study, the Healthy Day App enables hypothetical adjustments to time-use behaviours to measure possible impact. Australian academics have launched a new app, the Healthy Day App, to guide parents on a balance of activities for their children that can 'best help mental, physical and academic outcomes' (stock image) Simple measures like switching an hour of screen time for one of exercise could mean 4.2 per cent lower body fat, 2.5 per cent improved wellbeing and 0.9 per cent higher academic performance according to the app, which was developed by the University of South Australia and Murdoch Children's Research Institute. CNBC’s Joe Kernen confronted Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on the White House’s “tone deaf” celebration of the economy amid continuing inflation woes. Appearing on Squawk Box on Friday, Buttigieg touted the Inflation Reduction Act, but Kernen quickly got sick of the transportation secretary sticking “to the script.” Kernen referenced the Consumer Price Index rising 8.3 percent year-to-year for the month of August with the cost of things like food continuing to rise. Kernen asked Buttigieg if he thought it may have been a mistake for President Joe Biden to hold a ceremony this week celebrating the economy and Inflation Reduction Act amid inflation concerns and the Dow Jones dropping more than 1200 points. “What you’re telling me is just stick to the script. The economy is great, the border is secure, our cities are safe. Wouldn’t it be better to just be honest with the American people about the soup that we’re in right now and we can all try to deal with it together?” Kernen said. “Nobody’s saying that we don’t have any problems,” Buttigieg said, “but if you...

U.S. President Joe Biden walks from Marine One to the White House following a trip from Michigan, in Washington, U.S., September 14, 2022. Tom Brenner | Reuters The Biden White House has just released its first-ever framework on what crypto regulation in the U.S. should look like — including ways in which the financial services industry should evolve to make borderless transactions easier, and how to crack down on fraud in the digital asset space. The new directives tap the muscle of existing regulators such as the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, but nobody's mandating anything yet. The long-awaited edict from Washington has, however, captured the attention of both the crypto industry as a whole — and of investors in this nascent asset class. The framework follows an executive order issued in March, in which President Biden called on federal agencies to examine the risks and benefits of cryptocurrencies and issue official reports on their findings. For six months, government agencies have been working to develop their own frameworks and policy recommendations to address half a...
Jeopardy fans revolted against co-host Ken Jennings after he allowed a champion to correct his answer, but not another contestant. Jennings, 48, found himself in hot water following Wednesday night's episode after he allowed four-time winner Luigi de Guzman to correct his wrong answer.  When the contestant was asked to identify a '19th-century landscape by this British painter,' Constable, de Guzman incorrectly answered: 'Constant.'  Jennings seemed to jump in to help, asking him to 'say it again.'  The Virginia attorney corrected himself and went on to gain the $1,000 - bringing his total up to $6,200 for the night.  Fans were riled up after Jennings didn't award the same offer to fellow contestant Harriet Wagner moments later.  Wagner, a retired lawyer, incorrectly identified Ursula LeGuin as 'Angela,' but quickly correctly herself.  Ken Jennings, 48, asked contestant Luigi de Guzman to 'say it again' when he mispronounced a British painter after buzzing in on Wednesday night's episode of Jeopardy. Last week, during California’s worst September heat wave on record, Akvile DeFazio noticed the squirrels in her La Verne neighborhood acting weird: “just plastered on the sidewalk,” she said, not moving. “It was just really bizarre behavior I hadn’t seen before,” DeFazio said. “I’ve seen squirrels all of my life, and I’ve never seen squirrels splat down like that.” At first, she said, she worried they could be sick, so she kept her distance. But a few days later while scrolling Twitter, she saw an article about the phenomenon that’s become known as “splooting,” a way squirrels and some other animals sprawl out to stay cool when temperatures rise. “Bears do it, squirrels do it, rabbits do it, dogs [too],” said Daniel Blumstein, a professor at UCLA’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. “They get really flat when they’re trying to shed heat.” People across California became fascinated by squirrels “splooting” during the unprecedented heat wave, sharing pictures and videos online of the animals on sidewalks or backyard patios. And recent interest in the rodents’ behavior has...
A woman has revealed how she revamped her "boring" bathroom in under an hour using one simple item – and it only cost her £6. As she "dreaded" the thought of wallpapering the bathroom, along with the expensive cost, she searched for inspiration. And ultimately, she decided to draw her own wallpaper. "I decided to freestyle something tropical and see where it went – but I expected it to be a disaster that I'd paint over," Ashley told NeedToKnow.Online. "But the pen worked really well on the flat white wall and within an hour, the bathroom was transformed. "We recently had our walls painted stark white after a...
In this article ETC.CM=watch nowVIDEO6:4706:47Two crypto experts say the Ethereum network merge is criticalWorldwide ExchangeEthereum's biggest-ever upgrade just took effect, in what industry experts are calling a game changer for the entire crypto sector. Thus far, all signs suggest the so-called merge — which is designed to cut the cryptocurrency's energy consumption by more than 99% — was a success. The overhaul to the ethereum network fundamentally alters the way the blockchain secures its network and verifies transactions. Most of these changes are happening under the hood and the hallmark of a successful upgrade is if the end user doesn't feel a difference in the hours and days ahead. Cryptocurrencies such as ethereum and bitcoin are often criticized for the process of mining to generate new coins. Before the merge, both blockchains had their own vast network of miners all over the planet running highly specialized computers that crunched math equations in order to validate transactions. It is called proof-of-work, uses a lot of energy and is one of the industry's biggest targets for critiques. But with the upgrade, ethereum has migrated to a...
Aaron Rodgers has never been one to accept accountability for failure, and it continued to manifest itself in his latest radio appearance.  Honestly speaking, is Aaron Rodgers ever going to accept accountability, or do we live in a world where he can do no wrong? In his latest appearance on the Pat McAfee show, Rodgers talked about the loss to Minnesota in Week 1 and made comments that come across as throwing everyone except himself under the bus. Sure, it’s the first game of the season. But what about Rodgers’ play? He didn’t exactly drop jaws, so to speak. Rodgers completed 22/34 for 195 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception. It’s also important to note that Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson nearly had as many receiving yards as Rodgers’ passing yards, 184 to 195. How can he explain that without critiquing himself?Aaron Rodgers will never accept accountability for his poor...
