DEAR ABBY: I come from a very small town that has only one school. My sister recently returned to attend her 50th class reunion. It was very informal and held in a local tavern. The event was announced on social media, and no formal invitations were sent out. When my sister spotted a man who had graduated the following year, she approached him and asked, “What are you doing here? You didn’t graduate with our class!” He answered that he had participated in sports with a number of the graduates and wanted to see them again. Considering that the event was casual, held in a public place and that my sister didn’t organize the event, send out invitations or act as a hostess, I thought her remark was out of line and mean. She strongly disagrees. What do you think? SMALL-TOWN SIS IN ILLINOIS DEAR SIS: Depending upon your sister’s tone of voice (and degree of sobriety) when she asked that question, it may have come across as an expression of surprise or curiosity. However, if it was asked in...
The man arrested for tossing Green Book actor Frank Vallelonga Jr's body out of a stolen vehicle onto a Bronx street told police 'he didn't know the guy' and has been released from jail despite facing nine charges, the DailyMail.com can now reveal. Stephen Smith, 35, was arrested by police around 9:40am in front of Food Center Drive in the Bronx on Tuesday, a day after Vallelonga's body was discovered.  Though Smith was not charged in Vallelonga Jr's death he was riding a stolen vehicle - a gray 2021 Hyundai Elantra- with New Jersey license plates, when he dumped the actor's dead corpse along Oak Point Avenue in the Bronx at approximately 1:15am on Monday. Smith now faces charges stemming from grand larceny, petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle. His next court date at Bronx Criminal Court is January 11, 2023. He is currently on supervised release.  The criminal complaint obtained by DailyMail.com said Smith 'walked to the passenger's side of the vehicle and pulled a human corpse out of the passengers seat and...
LUIS ENRIQUE revealed he didn't realise Spain were on the brink of a shock early World Cup exit. Then he joked he would have had a "heart attack" if he was aware of the situation. 3Luis Enrique was pleased he did not know the permutations regarding Group ECredit: Reuters 3Spain were in no mood to celebrate despite booking their place in the last 16Credit: Getty Spain scraped through from Group E on goal difference ahead of Germany on a chaotic night in Qatar. Enrique's side led Japan but fell 2-1 behind early in the second half. Just minutes later, Costa Rica completed their own surprise turnaround to lead Germany by the same scoreline. And had things stayed the same, Spain would have joined Germany on the next flight home. However, La Roja were helped out by the 2014 champions who eventually prevailed 4-2. It meant that Spain, despite their loss to Japan, got through in second place to set up a last-16 clash with Morocco but Germany crashed out. And Enrique admitted in his press conference he...
Outgoing Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan (R) told CNN on Wednesday that he couldn’t bring himself to vote for either Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) or Herschel Walker. “I showed up to vote this morning. I was one of those folks who got in line and spent about an hour waiting. And you know, it was the most disappointing ballot I’ve ever stared at my entire life since I started voting. You know, I had two candidates that I just couldn’t find anything that made sense for me to put my vote behind and so I walked out of that ballot box, showing up to vote, but not voting for either one of them,” Duncan said. A little later in the interview, he said, “I think I’m in the same spot that hundreds of thousands of other Republicans, and millions across the country, are in, right? We just want real leadership to navigate us through the mess and mire of what we’re seeing play out in Washington, D.C.” He said Walker missed opportunities to show leadership. “One was: push back on Donald...
President Biden made a snide remark about loving the press when he was asked why he didn't push harder for paid sick leave for rail workers on Thursday.   A reporter asked Biden at a joint press briefing with French President Emmanuel Macron: 'Do the freight rail workers deserve more than one day of paid sick leave like millions of Americans have, and if so, why didn't you negotiate for that when you were negotiating that contract that you now want Congress to impose?' 'I love you guys - I negotiated a congress no one else could negotiate,' Biden said with a chuckle.  'The only thing that was left out is whether or not there was paid leave. You know I've been trying to get paid leave not just for rail workers but for everybody.'  Just after Biden's comments the Senate voted with an overwhelming 80-15 majority to impose contract terms on four of the eight rail unions that had objected to them, averting a rail strike ahead of the December 9 deadline.  The resolution now heads to Biden's desk for signature.  ...
Republican leader Kevin McCarthy finally on Tuesday condemned Donald Trump's meeting with white supremacist Nick Fuentes — but gave the former president the benefit of the doubt in saying that he didn't know who we was meeting. Democrats were quick to condemn Trump's meeting with Fuentes at Mar-a-Lago last week, and criticized Republicans who steered clear of commenting. McCarthy, who is in line to become speaker of the House after Republicans won control of the lower chamber in the midterm elections, was among those who had kept his own counsel. On Tuesday, after a meeting at the White House, he was asked why he had not condemned the meeting.  'I don't think anybody should be spending any time with Nick Fuentes,' he told reporters.  'He has no place in this Republican Party. I think President Trump came out four times and condemned him and didn't know who he was.' When he was told Trump had not condemned him or his ideology, McCarthy responded: 'Well, I condemn his ideology. 'It has no place in our society.' House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy was...
The father of a University of Idaho student who was murdered in her sleep earlier this month has revealed his daughter did not suffer in her final moments. Speaking on Good Morning America Tuesday, Steve Goncalves told how he only learned of his daughter, Kaylee's, untimely death from family members on campus, and choked up as he shared how she came home from school in an urn. 'It was fast and nobody suffered and nobody felt like that kind of pain,' Steve revealed on Tuesday. He said he only found out about his daughter's untimely demise from family members on campus before police confirmed her death, and tried to call Madison — Kaylee's best friend for years — only to find that she wasn't responding either. 'I haven't earned the ability to grieve the way that I want to grieve,' Steve said. 'I want to be able to just have justice first.'   He has previously spoken out about his 'frustration' with the lack of any new information in the investigation, which has entered its third consecutive week with no suspects.  Still,...
Former USA international Eric Wynalda has quickly backtracked on his claims that Gregg Berhalter asked Gio Reyna to lie about being injured, now insisting he 'didn't mean to say' it and apologizing to those involved. Wynalda - who played in three World Cups - claimed last week that Reyna, 20, had fallen out with the USA coach after refusing to lie about being injured for the Wales game, a statement that was strongly refuted by Berhalter himself. Speaking at his press conference, the America boss stated: 'That's just not who I am. That's not what I represent. So if you have to take my word or Eric's word, feel free. But I know what happened. That's not what I represent.' And just hours later, Wynalda himself poured more cold water on his own claims, also revealing that he has reached out to Berhalter to apologize personally.  Gio Reyna has been training alongside teammates ahead of the USA's crunch game with Iran Gregg Berhalter quickly shut down claims he had lied over the Dortmund winger's injury On Counter Attack, @EricWynalda clarified...
Commentator Megyn Kelly shared her thoughts on former President Donald Trump’s dining with Kanye West and Nick Fuentes. Last Tuesday evening, Trump made headlines by hosting the two for dinner at his Mar-a-Lago home, but later claimed that Fuentes arrived unexpectedly alongside West. Fuentes has been banned from many social media platforms for his far-right views, anti-Semitic comments, and repeated denial of the Holocaust. According to Politico, Trump attempted to clear the air about the dinner in a message posted to Truth Social last Friday. “This past week, Kanye West called me to have dinner at Mar-a-Lago. Shortly thereafter, he unexpectedly showed up with three of his friends, whom I knew nothing about,” Trump wrote. “We had dinner on Tuesday evening with many members present on the back patio. The dinner was quick and uneventful. They then left for the airport.” On the Monday edition of SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show, Kelly was joined by National Review’s Charles C. W. Cooke. During the conversation, Kelly said she believed Trump truly was unaware of Fuentes’ controversial past. “Here’s the thing. I believe Trump...

Gio Reyna has been benched for a second World Cup game in a row after head coach Gregg Berhalter faced criticism for not using him in USMNT's 1-1 tie with Wales. USA took a 1-0 lead against Wales through Timothy Weah but in the second half, Wales came back into the game and started to dictate play. The introduction of promising 20-year-old attacker Reyna seemed inevitable but Berhalter instead turned to Kellyn Acosta and Jordan Morris. And Berhalter has left him out of the starting lineup for the England showdown. Gio Reyna was an unused substitute in the USMNT's 1-1 tie with Wales in its Group B opener Berhalter resisted the urge to hit back at critics who questioned why he left the Borussia Dortmund star as a sub on Monday. Berhalter was asked again on the eve of the showdown with England why Reyna was left out and if the attacker was available to play the upcoming Group B clash. Ice Cube confirmed he missed out on a $9 million acting role after he refused to get the vaccination shot for COVID-19. The 53-year-old rapper-actor, appearing on the podcast Million Dollaz Worth of Game Monday, said, 'I turned down a movie because I didn’t want to get the motherf***ing jab.' He continued: 'I didn’t want get the jab - f*** that jab; f*** y'all for trying to make me get it. I don’t know how Hollywood feels about me right now.' The latest: Ice Cube, 53, confirmed he missed out on a $9 million acting role after he refused to get the vaccination shot for COVID-19 The comments came more than a year after reports in October of 2021 that he had been passed over for a role in the Sony comedy Oh Hell No as producers wanted all cast vaccinated for the shoot. The entertainer, whose real name is O'Shea Jackson, said he 'turned down $9 million' in not getting vaccinated to appear in the film, which is slated to star Jack Black and be directed by Kitao Sakurai. Ice Cube not only skipped out on a movie role because he refused the Covid vaccine, he also cold-shouldered a $9 million check in the process. Appearing on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, the rapper confirmed reports that surfaced last year revealing he walked away from a movie called Oh Hell No starring Jack Black that required a Covid jab for cast members. The movie was set to begin production last winter in Hawaii from director Kitao Sakurai. It would have seen Black portraying a character who falls in love with the mom of Cube’s character. “I turned down a movie because I didn’t want to get the motherfucking jab. I turned down $9 million. I didn’t want get the jab. Fuck that jab. Fuck y’all for trying to make me get it. I don’t know how Hollywood feels about me right now,” the Westside Connection rapper said. Cube did clarify at one point that he didn’t exactly turn down the part. He just refused to get vaccinated and was unable to continue with the movie. “Those motherfuckers...

Kim Raff/Getty Images Director Ron Howard said he was “surprised” to see J.D. Vance embrace former President Donald Trump after he got to know him while filming his biopic. Howard directed 2020’s Hillbilly Elegy, which chronicles Vance’s life in poverty as the son of a single mother with an addiction to drugs. The film is based on Vance’s 2016 memoir of the same name. Vance’s history of sharing negative comments about Trump is well-documented. Some of those comments were unsuccessfully used against him during Ohio’s GOP Senate primary. Howard got an inside look at the now-Senator-elect’s mind while they filmed Elegy in 2020. According to Howard, Vance was not a fan of Trump as recently as two years ago. Asked by Variety in Los Angeles about Vance’s relationship with Trump, the Oscar-winner said, “To be honest, I was surprised.” “When I was getting to know J.D., we didn’t talk politics because I wasn’t interested in that about his life,” Howard told the publication. “I was interested in his childhood and navigating the particulars of his family and his culture so...
CNN anchor Chris Wallace has grilled filmmaker Quentin Tarantino on his relationship with disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein asking why he 'didn't do more to stop him.' Weinstein, the man who became the face of #MeToo allegations five years ago, is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for sex crimes in New York. He has seven remaining charges set against him - two counts of rape and five other sexual assault counts. In the revealing interview, Wallace is seen to probe Tarantino on the convicted rapist asking why he didn't do more to protect the women who had made allegations. The Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill movie maker said that he had wished that he'd had a 'man to man' chat with Weinstein. 'For the most part, like I have always heard that Louis B Mayer did, and all the Hollywood moguls did to one degree or another,' he said. 'Again, it was easy to compartmentalize it to some degree. Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr recently shared a stinging rebuke of former President Donald Trump's announcement of his 2024 presidential run. On Friday, November 18, Barr sat down for an interview with Margaret Hoover on Public Broadcasting Service's (PBS) “Firing Line.” During the interview, he weighed in on his former boss' latest campaign announcement. According to Barr, Trump should step aside and forego running for president again. He didn’t do what the country hoped - that he would rise to the occasion and rise to the office, and he didn’t do that. He’s had his chance. He obviously doesn’t have the qualities necessary. He should stand aside.” Barr also weighed in on the possibility of Trump facing charges from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Although he has announced his presidential campaign, Barr has warned that there could be trouble ahead. Per the news outlet, he believes...
Donald Trump's 2024 launch has been greeted with dismay by senior Republicans, with the governor of Arkansas describing it as a 'self-indulging message promoting anger,' and Trump's own former chief of staff saying he was the only Republican who could lose the next election. Trump, 76, on Tuesday declared himself the future of the party. But many within the ranks were quick to try and consign him to history. Mick Mulvaney, who served as Trump's chief of staff from January 2019 to March 2020, was asked by CNN's Anderson Cooper whether he thought Trump's announcement was good for the party. 'No, I don't,' Mulvaney said. 'Because I think he's the only Republican who could lose. 'If he wins in 2024, now he's the candidate, he is the likely Republican nominee.  'Can he be beaten head-to-head by Ron DeSantis or Tim Scott? Sure.  'But it's not going to be a head-to-head race. There will be five or six other people in the race and he'll get the 35 percent that really support him and under the winner-take-all primary system, he'll be...

The Queen was 'madly in love with Prince Philip' and believed 'tolerance was key' to a happy marriage, a royal expert has claimed. Historian Dr Tessa Dunlop said that the late monarch's marriage was so successful because The Queen provided Prince Philip the 'stability' that the Duke of Edinburgh sadly never had growing up. The late royal was born just as the Greek royal family fell to a military dictatorship and the remainder of his childhood was spent on the run in Europe before he was eventually enrolled at Gordonstoun school in Scotland. Speaking to Ok! magazine, the royal expert - who has penned the biography Elizabeth and Philip: A Story of Young Love, Marriage and Monarchy - said The Queen remained 'madly in love' with Prince Philip throughout their 73-year marriage.  Dr Dunlop said: 'I think Philip loved Elizabeth. I’ve never been in any doubt about that. She changed his life.  'She gave him stability that he never had, she gave him wealth he never had. She gave him a platform he couldn’t have dreamed of. She gave him everything he didn’t have.' Prince...
Former Vice President Mike Pence in an exclusive interview with ABC news anchor David Muir on Sunday's edition of World News Tonight condemned the incendiary rhetoric through which he was personally targeted by then-President Donald Trump during the January 6th, 2021 insurrection at the United States Capitol. Pence refused to go along with Trump's scheme to reject President Joe Biden's Electoral College victory in the 2020 election because he determined that he had no constitutional authority to do so. Trump, who was desperate to hold onto power, reacted with a Twitter post that essentially labeled Pence as a coward. Speaking with Pence inside his Indiana residence, Muir recalled that "members were barricaded inside the House chamber, and in the middle of it all, you can see that the president has tweeted. 2:24 p.m., the president tweets: 'Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done.'" Instead, in one of the biggest upsets of the midterms, Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez has carried the Republican-leaning district in southwestern Washington. Gluesenkamp Perez is the kind of relatable candidate Democrats have often struggled to nominate in recent years. At 34, she is more than two decades younger than the average House member. After Reed College, she started running a Portland, Oregon, auto shop along with her husband, Dean. They live across the state line in rural Skamania County, Washington, in a home they built themselves. She’d run for office once before in 2016. Gluesenkamp Perez lost that race for county commission, but managed to run ahead of Hillary Clinton by 6 points. In her first debate with Kent, Gluesenkamp Perez introduced herself as a practical small business owner who was struggling with the costs of health care, child care, and government regulations. Sylvester Stallone makes time every morning to tune into Fox & Friends. That’s what he claimed anyway on Friday during an appearance on the Fox News show to promote his upcoming series, Tulsa King. “I watch every morning without fail,” Stallone declared at the top of his interview. “Really? That’s great,” co-host Brian Kilmeade said. One of the more notable claims Stallone made during the interview was that he auditioned to be an extra in 1972’s The Godfather, but didn’t get the part for a surprising reason. “I remember going in to audition for The Godfather as an extra, one of 250 people at the wedding,” the actor recalled. According to Stallone, he was told he didn’t look “Italian enough,” a rather odd observation about someone who would go on to play Rocky Balboa, a character nicknamed the “Italian Stallion.” Stallone last played the boxing character in 2018’s Creed II. “They said I don’t look Italian enough,” Stallone said. He claimed he ended up hiring the exact person who turned him down for the extra part and “reminded them every...
A nine-month-old baby was killed in a drive-by shooting in California as his mother was pushing him down the street in a stroller at around midday on Wednesday. The baby's mother and her boyfriend were walking along the street in Merced in the San Joaquin Valley when a vehicle pulled up and fired towards the three of them. At least one of the bullets hit and killed the baby, Darius King Grigsby, who was likely not the intended target, Merced Police Department detectives said. 'We don't know what the motive is,' said Lieutenant Joe Perez. 'At this point it's possible that maybe one of the parents was a possible target and the child was just tragically caught in the crossfire.' In surveillance footage recorded by a neighbor and obtained by ABC30, but not published, gunshots can be heard and the baby's mother can be seen scooping Darius from the stroller screaming: 'They killed my baby.' 9 month-old Darius King Grigsby was fatally shot on Wednesday as his mother pushed him along the street in a stroller Police detectives were seen...
SACRAMENTO —  What Gov. Gavin Newsom did was truly unprecedented. He handily won his reelection race without running. He didn’t even ask for our votes — the first thing any candidate should do. Yet, he was reelected governor of the nation’s most populous state in a near landslide. What does that tell us? Answer: How weak the once formidable Republican Party has finally become in California. Its gubernatorial candidate couldn’t even mount a competitive campaign against a noncombatant. The GOP apparently kept its record intact of not having won a statewide race since 2006. Newsom’s opponent, state Sen. Brian Dahle, 56, a seed farmer from rural Lassen County, was potentially the best GOP gubernatorial candidate since business executive Meg Whitman lost to Democratic legend Jerry Brown in 2010. Measured by experience in elective office, Dahle was the most qualified Republican to run for governor since then-Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren lost to Democrat Gray Davis in 1998. But Whitman was megarich and could pour $150 million of her own money into the all-out campaign. Lungren wasn’t rich, but the GOP...
When Joseph Chahayed immigrated to Los Angeles from Syria in 1980, he envisioned a better life and a brighter future for his family. His family said he has worked tirelessly toward that dream for decades — and on Tuesday, he finally received some well-earned recognition, when his Altadena gas station was awarded a $1-million prize for selling the winning $2-billion Powerball ticket. Under California’s Powerball rules, the retailer that sells the winning ticket earns 0.5% share of the jackpot, with the reward capped at $1 million. “He’s a really hard-working man,” said Chahayed’s son Danny Chahayed. “Seventy-five years old and he refuses to take a day off; he’s up at like 5 a.m. every day. No one deserves it as much as he does.” The elder Chahayed said he plans to share the lottery money with his family and grandchildren, who continue to provide him the motivation and support to keep working and building community. Zelda Perkins endured the predatory behaviour of her boss, Harvey Weinstein, throughout the five years she was his personal assistant.  His clumsy sexual advances were routine; he regularly exposed himself to her. So habitual was this grotesquely inappropriate conduct she did not — in her youthful naivete — even recognise it as abusive.  ‘Harvey would try something whenever he was on his own with me,’ she says of the once esteemed Hollywood producer now serving 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault. ‘I’d scold him or make fun of him; minimise his behaviour. It became normalised. I was a 22-year-old in my first job after graduating from Manchester University, and I thought a lot of international businessmen working from hotel suites must behave like that. As time went on, when he exposed himself I’d say: “Do I really have to see that disgusting thing again?”  ‘I never feared him physically overpowering me, because I always dealt robustly with him. For him, it was less to do with sex and more about power. He played mind games; the thrill was...
President Joe Biden insisted that he wouldn't change anything after Democrats had a better night than expected in Tuesday's midterm races. 'Nothing, because they're just finding out what we're doing,' Biden said when asked what he would change to convince Americans the country is headed in the right direction. 'The more they know about what we're doing, the more support there is.' Biden pointed to policies like cutting prescription drug prices, and the roads and bridges being improved through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and future high speed Amtrak lines, explaining, 'there's a lot of things that are just starting to kick in.'  'I'm not going to change,' he said.  'As a matter of fact, you know, there's some thing I want to change and add to,' he added, pointing to his willingness to have Congress pass an assault weapons ban. The Wednesday afternoon press conference served as a victory lap.  'While the press and the pundits are predicting a giant red wave. It didn't happen,' Biden said. 'And I know you were somewhat miffed by my incessant optimism, I felt...
Former Vice President Mike Pence published an excerpt from his upcoming book as a column in the Wall Street Journal, making it clear that John Eastman's quack theories about trying to overturn the election on Jan. 6 were known to be false even to him. He recalled a conversation with Donald Trump in the days before the Capitol attack. They were discussing the lawsuit brought by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX). "I don’t want to see ‘Pence Opposes Gohmert Suit’ as a headline this morning,” Trump raged, according to Pence. The former VP recalled he told Trump he was against it. “If it gives you the power,” he asked, “why would you oppose it?” Pence claimed he didn't believe the power existed under the Constitution. “You’re too honest,” he chided. “Hundreds of thousands are gonna hate your guts. . . . People are gonna think you’re stupid.” Other reports cite Trump calling Pence a "p*ssy" and a slew of other things. At the same time, Pence wasn't innocently standing up for democracy on principle. He was searching for a way to...

The memo comes a day after Zhao announced that Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency firm, had reached a non-binding deal with Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX to buy the exchange's non-U.S. businesses for an undisclosed amount, rescuing the company from a liquidity crisis. Earlier this year, FTX was valued at $32 billion by private investors. Since news broke of the agreement, FTX's native token FTT has plummeted to $3.50, down from around $25 a week ago. Zhao contributed to the decline, when he announced publicly over the weekend that Binance was selling its FTT holdings. Zhao said in the memo that Binance employees should not buy or sell FTT. "DO...

In the podcast's second episode, Corinna discusses the allegations of corruption her former lover faced before he abdicated in 2014, which saw him go into exile in Abu Dhabi.  She said she would regularly see Juan Carlos coming back from trips with cash and that the disgraced king would brush off her questions if she asked where the money came from.  Launching this week, the series – which has been created by journalist Bradley Hope – is likely to coincide with Corinna's High Court case against Juan Carlos for alleged harassment and spying. Corinna also labelled the former King of Spain 'unhinged' in...

Tudor Dixon is the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Michigan  Democrats and their liberal enablers in the media just can't believe that ordinary Americans actually exist. To them, if you don't think the way they do, you must be imaginary. Your hopes and dreams, your fears and struggles, the things that keep you up at night — those are silly, a fiction, in their eyes. In short, 'who cares?' they laugh. The very unfunny late night host Stephen Colbert even attempted to turn a concerned Michigan parent into a punchline. But the bit blew up in his face. At one of my recent events, Khalil Othman, a Muslim-American father from Dearborn, told the audience he was voting Republican this year because Democrats have ignored his concerns about pornographic content in schools. 'I am a proud Muslim American who expresses my values and concerns all the time,' Khalil said at my campaign's October 21st townhall. 'Dearborn has been voting Democrat blue for the last decade or two decades. But not anymore. On behalf of myself and my family, I guarantee you for...

Bravo Joe Gorga admits he regrets not going to his sister's wedding. Joe Gorga and his wife Melissa did not attend Teresa Giudice and Louie Ruelas’ wedding in August 2022. The couple made the decision to skip the event after a fight broke out at the taping of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” season 13 finale. In the weeks since, both Joe and Giudice have spoken out about the Gorgas decision to not attend the wedding. And while it seems both have made some kind of peace with things, there are still some pretty heavy feelings surrounding the whole thing. “It’s not good. It’s really not,” Joe told Access Hollywood on October 14, 2022. “I feel like I went back to when we first got on the show, and you feel tension. I don’t wanna feel the tension like that at 48 years old. I just wanna be happy. But unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way,” he added. The more time that passes, it seems that Joe is regretting his decision to miss his sister’s wedding....
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles didn’t believe he would find common ground with Roquan Smith on contract extension numbers. That was the prevailing reason Poles sent the fifth-year linebacker — the NFL’s leading tackler in 2022, a team captain and one of the Bears’ best players — to the Baltimore Ravens, one of three trades the rookie GM made in a week. In a news conference Tuesday at Halas Hall about an hour after the NFL trade deadline, Poles said the Bears and Smith shared their final numbers before Week 1. Over the first eight weeks of the season, Poles weighed Smith’s fit in the Bears defense and his value to the team against his requested contract. As Smith made known in August when he made a public trade request, he and the Bears valued his future with the team differently, a situation made more difficult by the fact Smith didn’t have an agent. And while Poles said he wants players to think highly of themselves, that gap ultimately ended Smith’s tenure in Chicago. “The reality of it is...
DEAR MISS MANNERS: I bought a friend of mine lunch at a nice restaurant. It was a way of celebrating an ordeal I had gone through that had finally come to a close. After we were seated, he didn’t want to order any food and kept his earbuds in to answer calls. He finally ordered something, took one bite and said he didn’t want it. He also kept looking around the restaurant to see if he knew anyone there that he could talk to. He wanted to abruptly leave because he realized he had an appointment to talk to a neighbor. That evening, I called and demanded my money back for the lunch. He said he would give it back to me. The next day, he denied saying that. Money is very important to me right now. What do you think of his behavior? Oprah Winfrey backed a death row inmate that is convicted of murdering a corrections officer in 1985 as he maintains his innocence and attempts to clear his name.  Jarvis Jay Masters had been booked at the San Quentin State Prison for armed robbery when he was charged with the fatal stabbing of correctional officer Sgt. Hal Burchfield four years into his sentencing in June 1985.  Masters, who was 23-years-old when Hal was killed, alleged that he was a few floors above where the murder happened and was forced to write out the details of the officer's death by a gang member.  Prosecutors later used the notes to convict him of murder, along with two others in 1990. He was also convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to death, according to the Los Angeles Times. Oprah Winfrey has supported the death row inmate since reading his 2009 autobiography, 'That Bird Has My Wings: The Autobiography of an Innocent Man on Death Row.'  'I believe that he is absolutely innocent of this crime,' Winfrey told The Times.  Jarvis Jay Masters is...
