Getty Running back Phillip Lindsay shared with reporters why he signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Coming into the offseason, the Indianapolis Colts were seemingly looking to improve a few different offensive positions. Running back, though, was not one of them. But that didn’t stop former Pro Bowl back Phillip Lindsay from signing with the Indianapolis Colts.  Lindsay signed a one-year contract with the Colts on May 17. The financial details of the agreement have yet to be disclosed, but in all likelihood, the Colts landed Lindsay at a bargain price. And despite the presence of the NFL’s leading rusher from last season, Lindsay described Indianapolis has an attractive place for him too. “It’s a great organization,” Lindsay told reporters at OTAs. “The way they run things, the leadership here, it’s something that you want to be a part of. It’s something special here.” ALL the latest Colts news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Colts newsletter here! Join Heavy on Colts! Getty The Indianapolis Colts and head coach Frank Reich visited with two-time All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore. The Indianapolis Colts began the offseason slowly by only re-signing a few of their own free agents. But things have begun to pick up for the Colts in April, and the team could still make a major splash in free agency. At least that’s the indication after Colts beat writer Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star tweeted on April 13 that the team hosted two-time All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore for a visit. This visit comes less than two weeks after Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay told Colts.com that the organization is still considering veteran free agents on defense. “There could be — it would have to be at the right price because we don’t have much cap room — an addition that excites some. But we’ll see,” Irsay said. “It’s possible. I know Chris Ballard is looking hard at that, trying to find the right individual. It has to be the right guy at the right number. “One more veteran possibly to come in and...
Getty Quarterback Carson Wentz said he was 'definitely surprised' with how things ended with the Indianapolis Colts during his introductory press conference in Washington. The Washington Commanders held an introductory press conference for new quarterback Carson Wentz on March 17. But a lot of the presser seemed less like an introduction and more of a rehashing of what happened for Wentz with the Indianapolis Colts. In particular, Wentz answered a few different questions about how things concluded with the Colts. While the quarterback said he is very excited about the new opportunity in Washington, he was “definitely surprised” by how things ended in Indianapolis. “Anytime you are in a new place, you want it to work out,” Wentz said. “You want to be there. You want to do the best you can for that team, that organization, that fanbase. God willing — it works out for a long time. It didn’t. God changed our plans.” Carson Wentz said he was "definitely surprised" by how things ended in Indianapolis. pic.twitter.com/s2IoKjGNLV Read More From Heavy Bet $5, Win $150 Whether Your...
The NFL’s version of March Madness saw another quarterback fill a bracket Wednesday, all while Jimmy Garoppolo’s future remains on the proverbial bubble. The Washington Commanders took Carson Wentz off the Indianapolis Colts’ hands, and while one door closes as a potential landing spot, the Colts seem like an ideal trade partner for the 49ers and Garoppolo. Pair a savvy, veteran leader with a stud running back? That would work for the Indianapolo Colts and Jonathan Taylor, as it would with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Najee Harris. The Colts picked up a pair of third-rounders for Wentz, equity they could flip for Garoppolo, presuming they’re not scared off by his shoulder surgery Tuesday. What is the final barometer to set Garoppolo’s final market value? Maybe it’s Deshaun Watson’s legal picture, which could crystalize Friday amid grand jury proceedings for the one-time Houston Texans star. Watson, if cleared, seems more destined for Seattle or Carolina, leaving the AFC market to Garoppolo. Enough teams still need a quarterback that one will jump the line, out of sheer separation or true affection. Garoppolo’s...
Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich has watched Alan Williams in action the last four seasons, impressed with Williams’ ability to teach and lead the team’s secondary. “Alan has great energy on the field,” Reich said Tuesday. “Watching him run drills, he has good energy, good body language. There’s a good, positive vibe to him. He can connect. Alan’s an excellent football coach.” Williams has been the Colts defensive backs coach since 2018, working under Reich and Matt Eberflus. Now he’s following Eberflus to Chicago, agreeing Wednesday to become the Bears defensive coordinator. It’s a role Williams, 52, has held before — for two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings in 2012 and 2013 — but that stint wasn’t spectacular. The Vikings went to the playoffs in Williams’ first season overseeing the defense, winning 10 games while finishing fifth in the league in sacks, 22nd in takeaways, 16th in total yards allowed and 14th in points allowed. The following season — on the way to a 5-10-1 backslide that cost head coach Leslie Frazier and much of his...
Questions surrounded Matt Eberflus both times he was hired as a defensive coordinator, and at each stop he more than satisfied the inquiries. Now the Chicago Bears are seeking an answer to whether Eberflus is the right man to be their next head coach. The Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator has a second interview with the team Wednesday. The Bears are likely to give new general manager Ryan Poles significant input in the coaching hire, but the search committee clearly is impressed with Eberflus. “Anybody who has been around Flus has known it’s a matter of time for him to become a head coach,” said retired Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee, who played for Eberflus from 2011 to 2017. Some wondered if Eberflus was ready to become a coordinator in 2001, when Gary Pinkel was hired at Missouri and brought much of his staff with him from Toledo. Defensive coordinator Tom Amstutz replaced Pinkel as the Rockets head coach, so Pinkel was left to sort through options. He kept coming back to Eberflus, who was a...
The NFL’s schedule changes for Week 18 will feature exactly what the league wanted: a Sunday night showdown for a playoff berth. To finish the NFL’s first 17-game season, the Los Angeles Chargers at Las Vegas Raiders game was flexed from daytime to prime time. Both AFC West rivals are 9-7, and the winner will advance to the postseason. “Each week has a life of its own in the NFL … and that’s the way we need to treat things around here,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said. “And the longer that we’re here, the more people will realize that every week is going to feel like this coming week.” Also in the mix for the final AFC wild-card slot — the New England Patriots own one of them — are the Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens. If the Colts win Sunday in Jacksonville, they’re in. The Steelers (7-7-1) must win out — they play Monday night at home against the Cleveland Browns, then visit the Ravens (8-8) — and still could fall short. The...
With Carson Wentz on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the Indianapolis Colts have reportedly discussed signing veteran quarterback Philip Rivers. On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts placed starting quarterback Carson Wentz on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Wentz will now be in danger of missing the Colts’ matchup on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, which will have major playoff implications for the team. The Colts can officially clinch a playoff spot with a victory this week. If Wentz is out, rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger would be in line to start. The Colts selected Ehlinger in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. In addition, Brett Hundley and James Morgan are on the team’s practice squad. Hundley started nine games for the Green Bay Packers in 2017 posting 1,836 passing yards, nine passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Morgan was selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He has yet to play an NFL snap. But perhaps there’s another option out there. The Colts have reportedly discussed signing Philip RiversWith a playoff spot potentially on the line...

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Jonathan Taylor set a franchise record by scoring five times, and took over the NFL lead in both yards rushing and touchdowns, in the Indianapolis Colts’ 41-15 rout of the unraveling Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Taylor scored three times in the first half, including a 23-yard catch, en route to becoming the NFL’s first player with five TDs in in one game since New Orleans’ Alvin Kamara had six TDs rushing in a 52-33 win over Minnesota last Christmas Day. The Bills (6-4) ceded their lead atop the AFC East, falling a half-game behind — guess who? — New England, which Buffalo will play twice over the next five weeks. Taylor finished with a season-high 185 yards rushing and four touchdowns and has 1,122 yards this season after beginning the day tied for the league lead with the injured Derrick Henry of Tennessee. Taylor has 14 touchdowns this season, moving ahead of Arizona’s James Conner, who began the day with 12. Taylor topped 100 yards from scrimmage and scored a touchdown for the eighth consecutive...
Carson Wentz won’t be skipping the Colts/Jaguars game for the birth of his child. According to Taylor Tannebaum, the starting quarterback of the Colts is expecting the birth of his second child at any moment. Ralph Macchio turns 60: Stars who are ageless wonders Moderna, Qualcomm, Merck Active As Stocks Mixed In Fed Taper Wake: Jobless Claims Fall to 269,000 If you were aware of Mike White's football work before Week 7, you're a Western Kentucky alum, a serious draft nerd, a New York Jets superfan or someone who watches every minute of the preseason.  White took over for injured Zach Wilson in Week 7, threw a touchdown pass, and then started in Week 8 because Joe Flacco wasn't going to be ready after the Jets traded for him midweek. Then White threw for the most yards of any Jets quarterback in 21 years.  White's 405-yard game in an upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals was a pleasant surprise to Jets fans and a nightmare to a lot of survival pool players. Now we get to see in prime time if White was a one-week wonder, or if he was just a secretly capable quarterback who'd never gotten a shot.  White and the Jets are 10.5-point underdogs at BetMGM vs. the Indianapolis Colts, an...
DeForest Buckner wasn’t the one that got away. He was the one who was traded away. The 49ers made a conscious decision to send their best defensive player to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for the No. 13 overall pick in the 2020 draft. Buckner, one of the NFL’s most dominant interior linemen, didn’t even want to go and told general manager John Lynch as much. “When I had my conversation with John, I told him, `Look, I told my agent is telling me I’m worth this, but obviously I’m able to meet in the middle,’ ” Buckner said Wednesday in a conference call with Bay Area writers. “Someway, somehow, I want to be here. But I didn’t want to take too big of a pay cut to where I know what I’m actually worth.” What Buckner was worth to the Colts was four years and $84 million. The 49ers then paid Aric Armstead, one of Buckner’s closest friends, five years and $85 million. Then they drafted Javon Kinlaw at No. 14 (trading back one spot...
With T.Y. Hilton out into the regular season, the fantasy football breakout train for Michael Pittman is full speed ahead.  The Indianapolis Colts’ wide receiver depth has taken a hit, with T.Y. Hilton set to miss multiple weeks with a neck injury. But all is not lost, with Hilton passed his days as a certified No. 1 wideout. Enter Michael Pittman. The Colts took Pittman in the second round of the 2020 draft out of USC. Beyond an atypical rookie season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, his debut season was set off course by a significant calf injury early, as he missed three games after surgery to fix compartment leg syndrome. From Week 9-14 (six games), Pittman had 23 receptions (on 37 targets) for 339 yards and a touchdown. He ended the season on a high note, with five catches for 90 yards on 10 targets in the Colts playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills–the latter two numbers were team-highs. The Chicago Bears are running out of patience with the Philadelphia Eagles on a possible trade for quarterback Carson Wentz. The clock is ticking on if the Philadelphia Eagles are going to trade quarterback Carson Wentz or not. The Chicago Bears clearly want him, but are growing frustrated with how much the Eagles are overvaluing their former franchise quarterback. This is why a trade has not happened yet. According to Mike Kaye of NJ.com, the Eagles do not want to give up Wentz for anything less than a Matthew Stafford haul. The trade package the Detroit Lions received for Stafford was so large because of Jared Goff’s albatross contract coming the other way. The other team seriously vying for Wentz is the Indianapolis Colts, but they want another player to come with Wentz in a trade. Jon Gruden’s Raiders offense is the franchise’s best in nearly 20 years. Quarterback Derek Carr is having a career renaissance. Running back Josh Jacobs — even in his banged-up state — is a game-changer. Tight end Darren Waller is putting up absolutely crazy numbers, and Nelson Agaholor and Henry Ruggs might be the most underrated wide receiver combination in the NFL. The Colts had trouble bridging the gap from Andrew Luck at quarterback last season. With Philip Rivers starting in 2020, Indianapolis is 5-3 going into the Week 10 Thursday night division battle at Tennessee and in AFC playoff contention under coach Frank Reich again. After finishing 7-9 with Jacoby Brissett in 2019, the Colts decided to turn to the 38-year-old Rivers, signing him soon after he was released by his previous only NFL team, the Chargers, in March. In an offseason when Tom Brady, Teddy Bridgewater, Nick Foles, Andy Dalton, Joe Flacco and Cam Newton all changed teams, the Colts seemed to lock into their veteran QB replacement early. Here’s a look back at Indianapolis’ reasoning for rolling with Rivers and the results so far: MORE: Philip Rivers has how many kids? Why the Colts’ signing of Philip Rivers made sense Brissett played at an average level last season. He wasn’t much different from the younger QB who also started 15 times in 2017. He struggled to push the ball downfield and put up very similar numbers as a limited rusher. The...
The Baltimore Ravens quarterback is not performing like he did last season, where he won the NFL MVP. At this point last year, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was the most electric and exciting superstar in the entire NFL. He led the Ravens to a AFC North title and the top seed in the playoffs before easily winning the NFL MVP. Besides that, the Ravens entered Week 9 with the second-worst passing offense in the league (179.9 yards/game). We get it, the Ravens are a run-first team, but those passing numbers concerning to see, especially since they’re in the playoff hunt. Last year, Jackson led the league with 36 passing touchdowns. Through eight games in 2020, Jackson only has 12 touchdowns. Let’s face it, barring an unreal second half, Jackson isn’t matching his MVP numbers. It doesn’t feel like Jackson is going to heave passes deep downfield this season a la Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson. Jackson has eight games to turn things around. He either improves, gets the “defenses figured him out” treatment from his critics, or Ravens fans...
Indianapolis Colts All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard gave one of his white gloves to a fan as a souvenir after the team’s 28-11 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium. However, inside the glove, the fan discovered Leonard’s wedding ring. TAYLOR MAKES HEFTY WORKLOAD PAY OFF AS COLTS BEAT VIKINGS Tyler Brooke, a podcast host, tweeted out that his step-nephew was the recipient of the glove, and he was looking for a way to return Leonard’s ring. My step-nephew got @dsleon45’s game gloves yesterday,” Brooke wrote. “Plot twist: Leonard’s wedding ring was accidentally in the gloves. Someone help us get his ring back to him ???? #Colts” COLTS' PARRIS CAMPBELL GETS CARTED OFF THE FIELD AFTER SUFFERING APPARENT KNEE INJURY ON LOW HIT Leonard answered Brooke’s tweet saying, “I need that” with four laughing emojis. You doing great? Whether you are about to notch a win, you’re certain you’re going to lose or you’re engaged in a nail-biter, your team can get better. We’ve only included players who are at 50% ownership or less in standard ESPN leagues, which excludes breakout players like Robby Anderson, a guy should definitely grab if he’s available in your league. So here’s who we think you should add after almost all of Week 1 action. We’ll be...
Philip Rivers may have ended his 16-year stint with the Chargers on a sour note, but he doesn’t think he’s washed up quite yet. “At times, I think what may have aggravated me a little bit last year was [the notion] that I just couldn’t play anymore,” the 38-year-old Colts quarterback said on Wednesday, via ESPN. “When you heard that, it bothered me, because I wanted to go, ‘Shoot, let’s turn on the tape and watch all the good things.’” Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich sifted through days of tape for “all the guys” available – including highly sought after free agent and six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady – before signing Rivers to a one-year, $25 million deal in March. Reich described Brady as “incredible,” but called the chance to reunite with Rivers as a “crazy, unique opportunity.” Rivers overlapped with multiple members of the current Colts’ coaching staff as a member of the Chargers, including Reich, offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni and tight ends coach Jason Michaels. “I do know the scheme, but there’s always tweaks when you haven’t...
Future Hall of Famers Peyton Manning and Adam Vinatieri appeared to have done it again — until Mark Sanchez and Nick Folk did them one better to pull off a stunner. After Vinatieri’s 50-yard field goal gave the Colts the lead with 53 seconds left in the 2010 AFC wild-card game, Sanchez marched the Jets down the field for Folk to kick a 32-yard field goal as time expired, finishing off the Jets’ 17-16 upset at Lucas Oil Stadium. “That was a Herculean effort by our entire team,” second-year coach Rex Ryan said after the win on Jan. 8, 2011. The win punched the Jets a ticket to Foxborough, where Ryan again refused to kiss Bill Belichick’s rings as Gang Green pulled off another upset in the divisional round, securing their second straight trip to the AFC Championship. In the 2009 AFC Championship, the Colts had come back with 24 unanswered points to beat the Jets 30-17. But Ryan’s crew avoided another meltdown against the Colts the following January. “We came back here to finish off where we left off...
CLEVELAND (AP) — Former Colts general manager Ryan Grigson was hired Friday as a senior adviser for the Cleveland Browns, reuniting with general manager Andrew Berry. Berry, a first-time GM and the NFL’s youngest, has now filled out his front office in four months. Grigson was the GM in Indianapolis from 2012-16, a stretch in which the team made three playoff appearances. Berry was promoted to pro scouting coordinator in Grigson’s first season. Now Grigson is helping Berry, who returned to Cleveland in January after spending one season with Philadelphia. The accition of Grigson was one of seven full-time hires and 20 promotions or title changes. Some personnel titles reflect the ongoing changes within the game. They include lead data scientist, data architect and software developer. Grigson has been with the Browns since before this year’s draft. He was a senior consultant in Seattle the past two years. “We obviously have a long-time relationship,” Berry said. “He was one of the first people to make a significant bet on me early in my career. That is not the reason...
Frank Reich jumped right into research mode when he knew Philip Rivers would hit free agency. The Indianapolis Colts coach studied tapes of Rivers' throws from an uncharacteristically poor 2019 season to compare with those he made earlier in his career. Reich saw no difference. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM When offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni and tight ends coach Jason Michael concurred with Reich's opinion, general manager Chris Ballard went all in on a 38-year-old quarterback the Colts believe can make them a title contender. “I really think he’s the same player he was five years ago physically and he’s taken good care of his body," Reich said recently. “I think he’s at a stage in his career where this is the right thing, this is a great move for him. He’s a great fit for us." There's plenty to like about Rivers. He has a reputation as the consummate pro and as a family man, active in the community. He understands the offense and the philosophy of Indy's offensive brain trust after spending three seasons in...
