LONDON (AP) — British military personnel have begun delivering fuel to gas stations after a shortage of truck drivers disrupted supplies for more than a week, leading to long lines at the pumps as anxious drivers scrambled to fill their tanks. About 200 service personnel were deployed Monday to boost deliveries after undergoing training at commercial fuel depots last week, the government said. The U.K. is short tens of thousands of truckers, because of a confluence of factors including the coronavirus pandemic, an aging workforce and an exodus of foreign workers following Britain’s departure from the European Union. The problem has contributed to empty supermarket shelves and shuttered gas pumps. “Army drivers have gone out,” Treasury chief Rishi Sunak told LBC Radio. “The situation has been improving now for, I think, over a week; every day, as the stats have come on, it’s getting better and, as demand settles back to more normal levels, the strong expectation is things will resolve themselves … People should know we’re doing everything we can.” While the government says supply disruptions are easing, fuel...

Don’t expect any 2-for-1 deals on Jammie Dodgers or sausage rolls in 2022. The government of the U.K. is planning to ban supermarkets and retailers from offering "buy one get one" deals on unhealthy foods both in-store and online, the country’s Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) announced Monday. Beginning in April 2022, such promotions — along with similar deals offering three products for the price of two, etc. — will be prohibited on any food or drink deemed high in fat, sugar or salt. Free refills on sugary drinks will also be prohibited within the country’s "eating-out sector," the press release said. PEOPLE DIDN'T STOP DRINKING CORONA BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC: REPORT "We know families want to be presented with healthier choices. This is why we are restricting promotions and introducing a range of measures to make sure the healthy choice is the easy choice," said Public Health Minister Jo Churchill in a press release issued Monday. "Creating an environment which helps everyone eat healthier foods more regularly is crucial to improving the health of the nation." ...

ALLEN, Texas, Dec. 21, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A new survey of UK online and omnichannel retailers conducted by PFS, the operations business unit of PFSweb, Inc. (NASDAQ: PFSW), reveals that the majority of retailers are yet to adequately prepare themselves for the end of the Brexit transition period on December 31, 2020. With just over half (54%) of UK retailers reporting that they are either fully prepared for Brexit, or will be by the end of 2020, this still leaves a significant proportion of retailers who won’t be ready in time. The research has also uncovered that most retailers believe Brexit will have some kind of impact on their business operations. For many, the arrival of COVID-19 pushed Brexit further down the priority list. With talks ongoing to decide the future of the UK-EU relationship, impacts on areas of the supply chain are already being predicted. With pressures on customer services, fulfillment challenges and a lack of clarity surrounding customs changes dominating the data, what businesses choose to focus on first remains to be seen – deal or no...
London (CNN Business)UK ports are suffering from "significant disruption" that threatens to delay Christmas orders and push up the prices of goods even before Brexit hits, according to industry groups that warn companies are losing millions of pounds in sales. The British Retail Consortium and the Food and Drink Federation on Thursday called for an urgent inquiry into delays at ports, including Felixstowe and Southampton. They said logjams are causing shipping costs to rise by as much as 25% a week. The port of Dover, which handles 17% of the United Kingdom's goods trade, is also jammed up. Delays in getting goods onto shelves are hurting sales at a crucial time of the year and will force retailers to increase the prices of products. One company has lost over £1 million ($1.4 million) in sales due to the delays, the groups said in a letter to the UK government."The lead up to Christmas is the most important time of year for retailers; ordinarily accounting for up [to] a fifth of the entire year's sales," said British Retail Consortium CEO Helen Dickinson. "After...
Much of that waste is incinerated or goes to landfill, while around 40 percent is sent to other countries, often illegally. “In the countries that receive our electronic waste, it is often dumped, with toxic chemicals leaching into the environment and harming people,” the EAC wrote. The report notes online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay aren’t always considered retailers or producers. Many products are sold by third-party retailers — around 50 percent of goods in Amazon’s case. As such, those platforms aren’t obligated to contribute to the collection and recycling of e-waste. The committee urged them to “collect products and pay for their recycling to create a level playing field with physical retailers and producers that are not selling on their platforms.” The EAC slammed the notion of intentionally shortened device lifespans, too. While that practice might encourage consumers to buy newer products, it has a negative impact on sustainability.  Committee members also criticized companies for often making it difficult to repair their products, partly because components are often soldered or glued in place. They noted that Apple’s repair fees,...
