China is this week continuing its naval exercises in and around Taiwan in yet another round of sabre-rattling after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island.  The US has condemned the drills as an 'irresponsible' and 'provocative' move designed to undermine peace in the region - after President Xi's repeated vows to 'reunify' Taiwan.  In this video, Mail Online walks through the tensions that have led up to this confrontation.   The Chinese mainland is separated from Taiwan by the narrow Taiwan Strait, with the mid-point of the waterway acting as the unofficial border between the two China lays claim to authority over Taiwan, and also to a vast area of nearby ocean known as the South China Sea where it has built military bases on previously-uninhabited islands  What, and where, is Taiwan? Here, follow MailOnline's liveblog for all the updates on the crisis in Ukraine today:  Mark Duell Host commentator Auto-update 12:32 Russian prosecutors ask court to name Meta as 'extremist organisation' Prosecutors have asked a Russian court to designate Facebook's parent organisation Meta Platforms as an 'extremist organisation,' Russian news agency Interfax reported today. The state prosecutor also asked Russia's communications watchdog to restrict access to Meta's Instagram social networking service. Reuters reported yesterday that Meta would allow Facebook and Instagram users in some countries to call for violence against Russians and Russian soldiers in the context of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Another Russian news agency, TASS, reported that Russian investigators had opened a case about Meta's actions. 12:30 Russia takes its Ukrainian 'biological weapons' propaganda to the UN Russia has demanded a UN Security Council meeting to discuss its baseless claims the US is funding biological weapons in Ukraine. Buses packed with people fleeing the Russian invasion in Ukraine left two embattled cities today along safe corridors as the war entered its 13th day. United Nations officials said the exodus of refugees from the country had reached two million amid the biggest ground war in Europe since the Second World War. The Russian onslaught has trapped people inside besieged cities that are low on food and water, with previous attempts to lead civilians to safety having failed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who will address Britain's MPs at 5pm today via videolink, called for the expansion of humanitarian corridors for civilians. He said a child died of dehydration in Mariupol in what was a desperate situation in the city - and pleaded again with Western countries to provide air support. With the invasion now well into its second week, Russian troops have made significant advances in southern Ukraine but stalled in some other regions. Ukrainian soldiers and volunteers have fortified the capital of Kyiv with hundreds of checkpoints and barricades designed to thwart a takeover. A steady rain of shells...
Moscow was condemned today after revealing new humanitarian corridors that will take Ukrainian civilians fleeing the invasion towards Russia or its ally Belarus. The limited ceasefire announcement came a day after hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians trying to flee to safety were forced to shelter from Russian shelling. Ahead of a third round of talks planned for today, the Russian Defence Ministry said a ceasefire would start in the morning, and safe passages would open for civilians from the capital of Kyiv as well as Mariupol, Kharkiv and Sumy. Some of the evacuation routes, however, would funnel civilians towards Russia or its ally Belarus - unlikely destinations for many Ukrainians who would prefer to head towards countries on the western and southern borders. A senior Ukrainian official rejected those proposals. Well into the second week of war, Russia's plan to quickly overrun Ukraine has been stymied by resistance. Its troops have made significant advances in southern Ukraine and along the coast but many of its efforts have become stalled, including an immense military convoy that has been almost motionless for...
Vladimir Putin's forces laid siege to two strategic Ukrainian ports today with Kherson becoming the first major city in Ukraine to fall to the Russians.  The capital of Kyiv was also coming under attack today, while the city of Odessa was bracing for an attack after Mr Putin's warships were seen leaving Crimea. Russia reported its military casualties for the first time since the invasion began last week, saying nearly 500 of its troops have been killed and 1,600 wounded. Ukraine said more than 2,000 civilians have died, while the United Nations refugee agency revealed that one million people have fled the country since the invasion. Meanwhile Moscow's isolation deepened when most of the world lined up against it at the UN to demand it withdraw from Ukraine and sanctions were tightened. A second round of 'peace talks' aimed at ending the fighting in eastern Europe was expected to take place today, but there were little hopes of a breakthrough. And an International Criminal Court war crimes investigation has begun after Boris Johnson accused Mr Putin of committing atrocities by bombarding...
Boris Johnson has called Russia's invasion of Ukraine a 'disastrous misbegotten venture by President Putin' as the Kremlin's forces continue to face resistance.  Ahead of an emergency United Nations General Assembly meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the next 24 hours would be a 'crucial period'. In the meantime, Russian and Ukrainian forces have again been engaged in heavy fighting ahead of the widely expected assault on the capital. Ukrainian defenders have put up stiff resistance, but a US official cautioned that far stronger Russian forces inevitably will learn and adapt their tactics. A Ukrainian delegation is due to meet the Russians 'without precondition' today on the border with Belarus, although Mr Zelensky has indicated he sees little prospect of any meaningful dialogue.  Meanwhile, Mr Johnson dismissed a dramatic announcement by Vladimir Putin that he was putting Russia's nuclear forces on heightened alert as a 'distraction' from the failure of his troops to breakthrough in Ukraine.  Mr Johnson said Mr Putin's nuclear order appeared to be an attempt to divert from the fact that his efforts to re-make the post-Cold War...

MailOnline’s publisher and founding editor Martin Clarke is stepping down, he announced Friday. “Earlier this year I indicated to Lord Rothermere that, after 12 incredible years building MailOnline into one of the world’s biggest news websites and having established it as a substantially profitable business in its own right, I wanted to pursue new challenges,” wrote Clarke, who served as DMG Media publisher and CEO/editor-in-chief of MailOnline and DailyMail.com, in a statement. He will officially exit the post at the end of February 2022. DMG Media CEO Rich Caccappolo will take over Clarke’s duties while the search for a new editor commences, according to the statement. Meghan Markle scored a stunning—and perhaps final—victory in her long-running legal action against the publishers of the Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday, and Mail Online today, after a judge dismissed an appeal by publishers Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) against her. In a statement, Markle criticized the “harmful practices” of tabloids as “a daily fail that divide us.” “This is a victory not just for me, but for anyone who has ever felt scared to stand up for what’s right,” she said. The duchess called on people to be “collectively brave enough to reshape a tabloid industry that conditions people to be cruel, and profits from the lies and pain that they create.” She accused ANL of dragging the trial out and attempting to “twist facts and manipulate the public (even during the appeal itself), making a straightforward case extraordinarily convoluted in order to generate more headlines and sell more newspapers—a model that rewards chaos above truth.” She added: “As far removed as it may seem from your personal life, it’s not. Tomorrow it could be you. These harmful practices...

Louis DeJoy shouldn't be allowed anywhere near law enforcement. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is still intent on messing with our U.S. Postal Service (USPS), permanently slowing down delivery of the mail, and undermining the one thing the agency is supposed to do: that whole "neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" thing. What USPS has prioritized, however, is its covert operation—entitled Internet Covert Operations Program (subtle, huh)—revealed last month by Yahoo News. Investigative reporter Jana Winter followed up that report this week with new disclosures, including that the "the program is much broader in scope than previously known and includes analysts who assume fake identities online, use sophisticated intelligence tools and employ facial recognition software." It uses the controversial facial recognition technology Clearview AI to spy on Americans' images scraped from social media posts. The analysts searching social media posts use software called Nfusion, which lets users create and maintain untraceable and anonymous accounts on various social media sites. This allows them “to help identify unknown targets...

The Daily Mail, which operates one of the most popular news websites in the world and the third-largest print newspaper by circulation in the UK, is suing Google over allegations that it discriminates against certain news companies in its search results. Breitbart News revealed data last year showing that Google suppresses news outlets in its search results for political reasons. The Daily Mail’s lawsuit alleges that Google retaliates against news companies for commercial purposes as well. via the Wall Street Journal:  In the suit brought by the Mail’s owner, Associated Newspapers Ltd., and its U.S. unit, Mail Media Inc., the publisher alleges Google linked its search engine and ad-sales platform to put pressure on publishers, abusing its market power. In 2019, Google punished the Daily Mail in its search results because the publisher had configured its online ad sales in a way that sent its business away from Google in many instances, according to the complaint. Google later tweaked its technology to counteract that tactic and restored the Daily Mail’s normal search performance, the suit alleges. More recently, Daily Mail executives have been disappointed...

Microsoft is testing a new Outlook app that will replace its built-in Mail and Calendar apps on Windows 10. Codenamed Monarch and “One Outlook,” the app is “a new version of Outlook designed for large-screen experiences,” according to a leaked version of the app. While the leaked app isn’t functional without a full internal Microsoft account, the One Outlook app will replace desktop (win32 and UWP) versions of Outlook, Outlook Web Access (OWA), and the macOS desktop client. Microsoft is also hosting the full web version of this new Outlook online. Microsoft is building a single desktop client that will be based on the web version of Outlook. The leaked app is clearly in an early state, and Microsoft even warns employees that it’s currently designed for “brave dogfooders” and doesn’t include an offline mode. Dogfood is a term used by Microsoft and other software companies to test and use early versions of their own code. This early version has leaked, but a final replacement for the Windows 10 Mail app might not arrive until next year. Windows Central reports...

(CBS4) – The U.S. Postal Service predicts 2020 will be a record-setting year for mail delivery because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We will have to wait until the holiday season is over to understand just how much of a record is set. However, officials say it is more important than ever before to mail packages and holiday cards early. USPS Denver based communications specialist James Boxrud says now is the right time to get parcels in the mail. “Try to avoid procrastination and get packages out as soon as you get them. Mail early this year,” Boxrud said. He told CBS4’s Britt Moreno people are using the mail system in a unique way during this pandemic. He says more people are buying online this year rather than shopping in stores because of coronavirus, so naturally there are more deliveries. “Due to the coronavirus so many people turned to online shopping for necessities, so there is a lot of mail in the mail stream. You add a holiday season on top of that — things will take longer.” He says more...
