And it is also a blow for Raheem Sterling who was pushing for a place after failing to feature in the 3-0 win over Wales. Football fans will be pleased that Foden keeps his place for the last 16 clash. Saka started the first two games and will now be fresh as England look to reach the quarter-finals. Southgate is expecting a tough game but expects England's attacking might to be too much for the AFCON champions. England have conceded just twice and they were in the opening game against Iran. HARRY KANE claims he could easily have played 90 minutes against Wales and that he has no fitness worries heading into Sunday’s last-16 clash with Senegal. The England captain went for a scan on his foot after a strong challenge from Iran’s Morteza Pouraliganji in England’s 6-2 thrashing of Team Melli last week. 1While he is racking up the assists, Harry Kane is still searching for his first goal of this World CupCredit: Getty He has since had strapping around his ankle, sparking concerns that he is not fully fit. Kane played all of the 0-0 bore draw with the USA but was taken off on 58 minutes in Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over Wales, which sealed safe passage to the group stage. Yet the Tottenham talisman, 29, told the BBC: “I've definitely played with worse stuff throughout my career. “In the Iran game I could have easily played the full 90 minutes, I think the manager changed it for tactical reasons.  “I had a precautionary scan which is really common in our sport, came back pretty much all clear...
THERE were so many positives to England’s display last night it is hard to know where to start. We pushed and probed and never panicked in the first half, then hit them with the old one-two early in the second half — and there was no way Wales were ever going to come back. 1Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden impressed on a night where England were back to their bestCredit: Getty England had quality in every department and confidence must be flowing through the team. Gareth Southgate made changes and gave more players in his squad valuable game-time — and they are all staking a claim to start now. I love Phil Foden, I’ve made that pretty clear. And, when he turned and had a shot as we approached the break, you could see that he was getting into his stride. His tricky run produced the free-kick from which Marcus Rashford scored a beautiful opening goal. Foden then got one for himself from Harry Kane’s cross, before Rashford got that third one to round off a great display. Rashford has...

Families of Iranian soccer players at the World Cup in Qatar have been threatened with torture and jailtime by their own country's government if they fail to adhere to pre-match rules ahead of a tense, final group match against the US on Tuesday.  A source told CNN that a meeting between the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRCG) and all 26 soccer players was called upon after the starting XI that faced England on November 21st refused to sing the Iranian national anthem before the start of the match. Players were told that their families would be subjugated to 'violence and torture' if they stay quiet during pre-match rituals and if they joined any groups protesting against the Islamic Republic's regime.  Families of Iranian soccer players at the World Cup in Qatar have been threatened with torture and jailtime by their own country's government ahead of their final Group B against the US on Tuesday Players of Iran stand during their national anthem prior to the FIFA World Cup 2022 group B soccer match between England and Iran at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha...
GARETH SOUTHGATE has hinted that Harry Kane will start against Wales despite fears the England captain needs to rest his sore foot. The Tottenham striker suffered an ankle injury scare in Monday’s 6-2 win over Iran. 3Harry Kane looks like he will start England's clash with WalesCredit: AP 3The England skipper has been struggling with a sore footCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun Southgate quickly moved to ease worries over his talisman’s fitness last week and revealed that it was a slight issue with his foot rather than ankle that was the problem. Kane then played in Friday’s drab USA stalemate, where he drew his second blank of the tournament, and was spotted walking gingerly in trainers with his ankle covered in straps afterwards. With England’s place virtually assured in the last-16, there have been calls for Southgate to rest the forward on Tuesday in the Battle of Britain against Wales. But when asked whether the 29-year-old needed a rest, the Three Lions boss said: “We’re obviously going to pick the team we believe we can win. That’s our priority...

Praise for the United States men's national team continued to trickle through the soccer media after the team's 0-0 draw with a more talented England squad. Gregg Berhalter's team clinched a point against one of the tournament's favorites, England, after shutting out The Three Lions in a goalless stalemate at the World Cup in Qatar on Black Friday.  The USA impressed against the Three Lions and arguably had the better chances with Christian Pulisic smashing a strike against the crossbar in a gripping affair at the Qatar World Cup. USMNT legend Landon Donovan has implored Gregg Berhalter to put Gio Reyna in his starting line-up to face England, and insists he is vital to the team's chances of victory on Friday afternoon. Reyna was a surprise exclusion from the team against Wales, and the US went on to struggle to break down its opponents in a 1-1 draw on Monday, despite playing well. The Wales score will have felt like a loss to the United States team as they walked off the pitch in Qatar. I was really impressed with the first half. We controlled the game. Josh Sargent went close, there was nearly an own goal and I was really happy for Timothy Weah to score. He's a great kid, always smiling, always happy. He took his goal well. The tide shifted in the second and the more clear cut chances came to Wales. But the US should have held on. It was a silly challenge from Walker Zimmerman on Gareth Bale, who had his back to goal and didn't have the ball under control. There was nothing Matt Turner could do to save Bale's resulting penalty. If you have the ability to hit halfway up the goal or higher with that kind of pace then even if you leave early as a keeper, gravity's going to take you down.  It's really difficult to save and I think Matt did everything correct on the penalty - the percentages are left footed takers...
THE last time England faced the USA in the World Cup was back in 2010.  The game ended 1-1 between the two sides and both were eventually eliminated in the first knockout round of the competition. 14Bukayo Saka scored twice against Iran England were the favourites to win the match on paper but created very few chances throughout, leading to widespread criticism of manager Fabio Capello for his rather conservative tactics. Fast-forward 12 years later, the USA are a different animal, but so are the Three Lions which makes the upcoming fixture an intriguing battle for viewers. England got off to a flier in the group phase, thrashing Carlos Queiroz’s Iran 6-2 in Doha in what was an impressive performance from Gareth Southgate’s side. Meanwhile, Gregg Berhalter’s USA will be disappointed with their 1-1 draw against Wales on Monday night. England know that another victory in Qatar will all but seal their place in the knockouts. But for the USA , defeat to England could prove to be the final nail in the coffin for their chances to progress to...
USA captain Tyler Adams admitted he knows his team will be the underdogs when it faces England in the World Cup on Black Friday.  The two rivals face off in a Group B clash Friday as The Three Lions look to continue their winnings ways, while the US will search for its first three points of the tournament.  Gareth Southgate's team thrashed Iran 6-2 in its World Cup opener Monday, thanks to a brace from Arsenal starlet Bukayo Saka but the USA suffered frustrations as it let a 1-0 lead slip in the 82nd minute by conceding a Gareth Bale penalty after a dominant first half against Wales.  US captain Tyler Adams (L) admitted he knows his team will be the underdogs against England As the teams prepare to lash at the World Cup, the first time since the 2010 tournament when they shared the spoils, Adams admitted his side is coming up against one of the favorites.  But the Leeds United star claimed Gregg Berhalter's team has the slight advantage of familiarity with some of its players playing against...
It may have come in a frustrating result for his team, but USMNT star Timothy Weah took a moment to mark his first World Cup goal for USA by having dinner with his father, George, in Qatar. George is the President of Liberia but before he moved into politics, was an extremely talented soccer player in his own right. Share this: DOHA, QATAR — Brazil and New York Cosmos great Pele congratulated United States forward Timothy Weah for scoring his debut goal in the World Cup in the Americans’ 1-1 draw with Wales. Weah got his goal in the 36th minute of Monday’s game to become the first player to score against Wales in a World Cup since Pele, who was 17 years old when he did it in 1958. Weah, who was born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, posted a photo of him celebrating the goal on Instagram and Pele congratulated him in the comments section.
The United States could only manage a 1-1 draw on Monday against Wales in their World Cup opener. Gio Reyna, who never got on the field, could have made the difference.  The United States, back at the World Cup for the first time since 2014, played a brilliant first half against Wales on Monday, but could only manage a 1-1 draw in its tournament opener. That means the USMNT’s road to the knockout round just got tougher if you consider that they now have to get points on Friday against mighty England. For all of the USMNT’s offensive firepower on display against Wales, the team’s most-potent offensive weapon never saw any action. We’re talking about Gio Reyna. He sat and watched from the bench. US manager Gregg Berhalter chose to sub in Brenden Aaronson, DeAndre Yedlin, Haji Wright, Kellyn Acosta, and Jordan Morris, but no Reyna. Tied at one, Berhalter could have put in the speedy striker. American soccer reporter Grant Wahl claimed he was refused entry to a World Cup stadium in Qatar for wearing a rainbow shirt.  The World Cup in Qatar has faced criticism for 'sportswashing' due to the host nation's poor human rights record, in particular the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community.  In Qatar, male homosexuality is punishable by a prison sentence and same-sex marriages are not recognized by the government.  As recently as this month, a Qatar World Cup ambassador told a German TV broadcaster that homosexuality was 'damage to the mind', and it remains illegal to be gay in the conservative Muslim country.  Wahl was attending the USA's first game of the World Cup against Wales on Monday and wore a black t-shirt with a circle in the colors of the rainbow wrapping around a soccer ball on the front, in support of the LGBTQ+ community. LONDON (AP) — Jack Willis could make an unlikely comeback for England in the Six Nations match against Grand Slam-chasing France in Paris on Saturday. Willis has been picked in the squad for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury in last year’s championship. The breakdown specialist tore the medial collateral ligament off the bone in two places, and sustained extensive meniscus damage. He made his comeback for his Wasps club only last month. With Tom Curry ruled out against France because of a hamstring problem sustained in the 32-15 loss to Ireland on Saturday that ended England’s title prospects, Willis has been told by coach Eddie Jones that he could be involved at the Stade de France. The more likely option is Sam Underhill is restored to the back row for his first appearance of the Six Nations, but Jones is not ruling out bringing in Willis. “Jack is obviously an option but I’d need to see him train tomorrow (Tuesday),” Jones said. “He’s shown a lot of resilience and a lot of determination. I was really...
WALES head to England looking for their first win at Twickenham since the 2015 World Cup. But they will be without winger Louis Rees-Zammit. 2Louis Rees-Zammit will play no part against EnglandCredit: PA The speed king was one of the star men in last year's Six Nations but will play no part against the Red Rose. Why isn't Louis Rees-Zammit playing for Wales against England? Louis Rees-Zammit has had injury concerns recently, as he picked up a knock to his ankle in Ireland. But they are not the reason he is not playing at Twickenham. Rees-Zammit has been released from the Wales squad and sent back to his club Gloucester. Rees-Zammit has not hit the heights of last season, where he was one of Wales' biggest threats. However, the Dragons have generally not got the ball to him out wide to the extent they did last year, and Wayne Pivac clearly feels a more physical winger is the way to go against England over the raw pace of the Gloucester man. 2Wales head coach Wayne Pivac has sent Louis Rees-Zammit...
