An ankle injury in training cam and a hamstring injury early this season have interrupted Paye’s acclimation to the new league and his new role, but there were signs of things coming together against the Jets last Thursday. Paye had his first two quarterback hits of the season and defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus said the team likes the growth they’ve seen from Paye in that aspect of the game. “He’s learning how to get to the edge and learning how to smart-rush the tackle, meaning that when he gets to the level [of the quarterback], he comes...

Getty Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has the second-best selling jersey in the NFL after Week 1. Jalen Hurts’ first crack at securing the franchise quarterback role for the Philadelphia Eagles was a wild success. He threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns in Week 1 to earn a passer rating of 126.4. Hurts also ran for another 62 yards on the ground while showing all the poise of a veteran leader in the huddle. He set the bar incredibly high for a Week 2 encore. His 87.9 passing grade was the second-best among qualifying quarterbacks, per Pro Football Focus. And his 89.5 overall grade was tied with Jameis Winston for No. 2 behind Tom Brady. ESPN ranked Hurts as the 11th-best quarterback in the NFL based on Total QBR rating. “Jalen was in complete control the whole game,” head coach Nick Sirianni said of Hurts. “He played a heck of a football game. The team announced outside linebacker Josh Allen has been placed on the COVID-19 list on Monday. It’s currently unclear whether Allen tested positive or is a close contact of someone who has. Allen missed the last six games of the 2020 season with a knee injury that landed him on injured reserve. Prior to that, he recorded 2.5 sacks, a pair of tackles for loss, and 11 quarterback hits in eight games. Allen earned a Pro Bowl berth as a rookie. He had 10.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, 23 quarterback hits, and a pair of forced fumbles in 2019. Jacksonville selected Allen at No. 7 overall that year. Jalen Suggs was the first athlete in Minnesota history to be named Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball in the same year, so choosing one sport to pursue in college was difficult. He made the right choice. The 6-foot-5 guard is expected to be a top-five pick in the NBA draft following a stellar freshman season at Gonzaga. Suggs averaged 14.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists and hit one of the most memorable shots in Final Four history, a buzzer-beating 3-pointer against UCLA that sent Gonzaga into the national championship game. The Zags lost to Baylor in the title game. "It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make," Suggs said on the AP Pro Football Podcast. "Had many conversations with my dad, with some close family, close friends, coaches, and ultimately, just time to myself in making the best decision for myself, for my family, for my future." Texas has reportedly made a serious impression on quarterback Arch Manning. There have been whispers about Arch, who is one of the most-hyped QB prospects in high school football history, eyeing Texas because of head coach Steve Starkisian, and it sounds like his visit to Austin went insanely well. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football) 247Sports’ Josh Pate said the following about the latest Manning quarterback’s visit with the Longhorns: I think they hit a home run, I think they are squarely in the mix for Arch Manning. But eventually, they’re going to have to have something tangible. Because there’s going to be too much tangible result to be seen from Alabama and the likes of Clemson. Texas has got to get it done. They have to show you something in weeks one and two because if you are to come out of summer on this massive recruiting hype wave and then you start to show product on the field earlier than anyone expected, that starts a snowball effect. That’s how you really...
Getty Russell Wilson prepares to throw a pass against the Cardinals. When the 2020 NFL season came to an end, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson turned heads with pointed comments. He specifically expressed frustration about the number of hits he took throughout the season, which appeared to be a direct shot at the offensive line. However, Wilson addressed those comments during OTA’s and explained that he wasn’t insulting his teammates. The seven-time Pro Bowler originally met with media members in February 2021 and explained that getting hit is “part of the job.” However, he added other comments that turned heads. According to Sports Illustrated, Wilson said that he has been sacked “almost 400 times” in his career and that he “is frustrated” with getting hit too much. Fast-forward to June 10, and Wilson further clarified his comments. “Not at all about the offensive line,” Wilson said during his recorded media availability. “I think I also mentioned that the reality is that I can do better, too. We’re all trying to find ways to win, and we’re all trying...

By STEVE MEGARGEE, AP Sports Writer Wisconsin may be facing the type of nightmare scenario that coaches feared as soon as the coronavirus pandemic arrived. What happens if an outbreak hits a team’s quarterback room? Wisconsin isn’t commenting on the COVID-19 testing results of individual players, but CBS Sports first reported that quarterback Graham Mertz has tested positive a second time. Under Big Ten protocols, that means Mertz can’t play for at least 21 days. If that weren’t enough, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported that quarterback Chase Wolf has tested positive at least once. Returning starter Jack Coan is out indefinitely after undergoing foot surgery. Junior Danny Vanden Boom is Wisconsin’s only other scholarship quarterback. “Obviously this year there’s some things that will be unique,” Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said Monday without specifically discussing his players’ test results. “I’ve appreciated what that whole room of quarterbacks has done, kind of how they’ve approached everything.” The situation could leave the ninth-ranked Badgers incredibly shorthanded at the game’s most important position as they prepare to visit Nebraska, host Purdue and travel to No....

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4)– An ugly scene in the final seconds of the Denver Broncos 37-28 victory over the New York Jets almost derailed the postgame celebration. (WJZ)- It’s hard to find any fault with the Ravens performance through two weeks of the season. At 2-0 with decisive wins over the rival Browns and Houston Texans, John Harbaugh’s group is off to a strong start. But, if there has been one area of concern so far, it’s been the number of hits opposing defenses have gotten on quarterback Lamar Jackson. Through two games, the Ravens have given up six sacks, tied for 5th-most in the league with several other teams. Jackson has been hurried 10 times according to Pro Football Reference’s stats and while he’s largely avoided getting hit on those hurries, he’s been pressured on 26.7% of his dropbacks this season. Left tackle Ronnie Stanley told reporters this week that the line is well aware that needs to change as the season goes on. “It’s never as good as you think, it’s never as bad as you think. When we looked at it, a lot of it wasn’t terrible pass protection but at the same time we know we can be cleaner,” said Stanley during a...
(WJZ)- The Ravens 2020 season kicks off on Sunday when the division rival Cleveland Browns visit M&T Bank Stadium for a Week 1 matchup. With the dawn of a new season comes questions about what the expectations should be for John Harbaugh, Lamar Jackson and company. After a 14-2 season in which Jackson and the offense lit the league on fire in the regular season with a punishing and varied rushing attack, one of the biggest questions is can they sustain it? More specifically, that question is aimed at Jackson who became just the second quarterback in league history to rush for over 1,000 yards breaking Michael Vick’s record with 1,206 rushing yards. There’s a reason we have never seen a quarterback rush for 1,000 yards twice. Mainly, the defining rule of the league over time has been limit the quarterback run game to keep your quarterback from taking too many hits. But, NFL on CBS analysts Charles Davis and Tony Romo both believe Jackson is an exception to that rule. “You have to be cognizant of it and protect...

Is the New York Giants’ pass rush where it needs to be in 2020? By: Alexander Wilson July 23, 2020 Follow ESM On Social Facebook Twitter Youtube Flipboard Instagram ShareTweet0 SharesOn Wednesday evening, the New York Giants gained exclusive rights for pass rusher Markus Golden, who posted 10.0 sacks in 2019. Golden failed to reach a long-term extension with another team, settling for 110% of his 2019 salary. The Giants will owe him just $4.125 million in 2020, gaining his services for yet another season. His sacks weren’t the only impressive part of this game, he also racked up 27 quarterback hits, 13 tackles for loss, and 72 combine tackles. He was a factor for the Giants, amid a unit that had predominantly youth players available. His retention is a bit more valuable than you might think, as the Giants were prepared to rely on Lorenzo Carter, Oshane Ximines, and Kyler Fackrell in 2020. However, Golden’s pass-rush win rate ranked 91st among eligible contributors, so he’s not the cream of the...

New York Giants: 3 hot takes going into the 2020 season By: Alexander Wilson July 2, 2020 Follow ESM On Social Facebook Twitter Youtube Flipboard Instagram ShareTweet0 SharesThe New York Giants have a long way until the 2020 season is underway, with training camp under a month away and several legal proceedings still being ironed out.
