U.S. President Joe Biden speaks during the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., U.S., February 15, 2022.Joshua Roberts | Reuters President Joe Biden made a surprise video appearance on "Saturday Night Live" during first-time host Aubrey Plaza's monologue. The "White Lotus" star, who, like Biden, is from Delaware, joked that she was voted the most famous person from the state, beating out the president. "That's a fact and he was pissed, he was livid," Plaza said. Biden then appeared via video and said, "Aubrey, you're the most famous person out of Delaware and there's no question about that. We're just grateful you made it out of 'White Lotus' alive." Many viewers took to Twitter to question whether the president's appearance was real, or if the video was generated by AI, but Biden shared the clip on his Twitter account Sunday afternoon. Despite Biden's willingness to get in on the Delaware joke, cast members didn't spare any punches and poked fun at his treatment of classified materials later in the show. The FBI said Saturday that more classified documents...

Fans of Parks and Recreation got a treat during Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update segment, as host Aubrey Plaza reprised her April Ludgate character from the show — and was soon joined by Amy Poehler, the SNL alumna who portrayed Leslie Knope on the NBC sitcom. “According to a recent study, local governments are having trouble hiring new employees,” said Colin Jost to start the segment. “Here to encourage young people to get involved in local government is a long-time employee of the city of Pawnee, Indiana, April Ludgate.” Plaza chatted with Jost in Ludgate’s trademark monotone, urging young people to “get a job as a garbage man or something.” Other local government jobs that young people should consider, according to Plaza’s Ludgate, included driving a bus (because “you don’t have to be on time — nobody cares”), working for the water department (“you can drain the reservoir and find all the bodies and murder clues”), or “just be a dogcatcher and just say you couldn’t find any.” “Because when you work for the local government, doing the bare minimum...
She is set to host Saturday Night Live for the first time on January 21, over 15 years after actress Aubrey Plaza failed her audition to join the ensemble cast of the iconic sketch comedy show. The full circle moment comes at a time when the 38-year-old's star has finally cemented her place as a hot commodity in Hollywood thanks to her praised performance in HBO anthology series of The White Lotus.    After nearly two decades of working in the industry, Plaza has built up a cult following of fans who can't get enough of her awkward nature, sardonic wit and distinctively deadpan style. Indeed, the star's talent is now being welcomed by all thanks to her steady appearances in projects, her often viral interviews and her status as a bisexual icon.  Aubrey Plaza has finally cemented her place as a hot commodity in Hollywood, after years of being seen as the awkward comedy actress The actress first made waves by playing April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation from 2009 to 2015, however her 'intimidating' and 'awkward' personality appeared to...

The Best Part of The White LotusWhen I planned to write a little something about how The White Lotus has gotten really good this season, I didn’t mean to time it to the episode with all the butts, incest, and gay sex, I swear. That said, those certainly were major elements of “That’s Amore,” my favorite episode of the season thus far, and they’ve certainly gotten a lot of attention. Aubrey Plaza has spent the first two episodes of The White Lotus in fresh hell, but now, she might have the opportunity to finally escape. Depending on how you look at it, though, that escape might actually be worse for her character, Harper Spiller. Isn’t a getaway to a tiny Italian villa a good thing? Not for our lovable cynicist Harper. Harper promises tired (and horny/unhorny) husband Ethan (Will Sharpe) that she’s going to “be good” to his friends the Babcocks, finally, now that they’re a few days into their Italian journey. At breakfast, her vow is immediately tested. Harper cannot begin her day with a confrontation! Cameron (Theo James) and Daphne (Meghann Fahy), the couple who “never fight,” have a debacle over breakfast espresso. Daphne wants to go to Noto to do her Christmas shopping several months early. Cameron wants to be a macho man on the jet skis. They bicker until Daphne has the perfect suggestion: Why doesn’t Harper just go Christmas shopping with her instead? Problem solved. And since Harper is being “nice” today, she’s forced into...

Parents are the worst—especially when your mom is a control-freak Wiccan and your dad is the undisputed ruler of the underworld. Life is thus hard for Chrissy (Lucy DeVito), a disaffected 13-year-old who on the first day of school, in the latest of many new hometowns, goes through puberty and discovers that she’s the half-human child of Satan caught in a tug of war between her ferociously protective mother and charmingly devious father. Executive produced by Dan Harmon, creators Darcy Fowler, Seth Kirschner and Kieran Valla’s half-hour FX comedy Little Demon (August 25) is the latest in a string of recent animated efforts (such as Netflix’s Inside Job and Hulu’s Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K) to indulge in out-there R-rated insanity. And like those predecessors, it’s at once rat-a-tat-tat inappropriate and surprisingly sweet, charting its protagonist’s attempt to understand herself and define her identity while negotiating a familial situation that’s dysfunctional beyond belief. Whether that balancing act is sustainable in the long run remains to be seen, but at least in the early going, this raucous and raunchy affair exhibits a flair for...
I am just going to be very blunt and say what needs to be said: We are not talking enough about Aubrey Plaza and how incredible of a dramatic performer she is. Frankly, it’s a travesty. Right now, my Twitter feed should be full of praise over Plaza’s stunning performance in the freshly released film Emily The Criminal. That it isn’t is (ironically) criminal. Worse is that this is not her first brilliant performance to fall so completely under the radar: Plaza has been doing show-stopping work for years and has never fully received the praise or accolades she deserves. So I think it’s high time we acknowledge that Plaza is one of the best and most captivating actors in show business right now. Like many, I have been a fan of Plaza’s since the Parks and Recreation days. As any fan who watched that show from beginning to end will agree upon, she was one of the greatest elements of that series. Plaza nailed every snarky comment and eye-roll that her alter-ego April Ludgate threw at her Pawnee pals—and...
There was a liminal moment in history where the esoteric and the futuristic were at war with one another. I’m, of course, talking about when movie rental stores were on their way out and the Redbox machine in your local CVS or grocery store was the hottest spot in town on a Friday night. Too often when standing at that little red kiosk, we’d be saddled with a weak selection of two or three new releases—already taken by a more proactive customer—and an assortment of indie movies and mid-to-low-budget, direct-to-DVD alternatives. But, occasionally, taking a chance on the leftovers would prove fruitful, introducing you to an unexpectedly smart and exciting new favorite. If you’ve ever rummaged the far reaches of Redbox for residual entertainment, you’ll recognize Emily the Criminal. It’s a movie that you’ve seen before, a crime thriller cloaked in a slick disguise to make it a little more appealing than similar fare of scratched DVDs past. But there can be comfort in the familiar, and Emily the Criminal capitalizes on its unassuming nature with a gripping, secret-weapon performance...
The devil works hard, but HBO’s casting department works harder. Aubrey Plaza is set to star in the sophomore outing of The White Lotus, HBO’s hit series about tourists in Hawaii and the resort employees tasked with dealing with them. Plaza’s casting was announced by HBO on Monday, just days after it was confirmed that Michael Imperioli, of Sopranos fame, had been tapped for the satirical dramedy’s second season. Rumors that Jennifer Coolidge, a beloved season one fixture, would be returning began swirling as early as last October, but the network has yet to comment on that. Series creator Mike White will be returning in an executive producer role. Plaza, 37, will play Harper Spiller, a woman on vacation with her husband and his buddies. As previously reported, the show’s second season will be set at a different, yet unnamed Hawaiian resort, rather than the eponymous White Lotus of the first season. It’s just as well, because staff may still be cleaning up the mess left by season one’s guests. Plaza, a Parks and Recreation alum, is known for recent...

What is television? The definition becomes a little hazy in the streaming era, when programming can roll out at movie-length or in “quick bites,” and can tell interconnected narratives across 18 different shows or anthologized one-offs without any semblance of plot. Apple’s newly announced series Calls promises to blur traditions even further. Coming to Apple TV Plus later this month, each installment of the nine-episode thriller series “follows a darkly dramatic mystery that unfolds through a series of seemingly average, unconnected phone calls that quickly become surreal as the characters face growingly unsettling experiences,” according to a news release. And it really is that bare bones: Based on the trailer above, Calls matches vocal performances with abstract visuals that intensify the conversation. This is new territory for director Fede Álvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead), who directs each episode. Álvarez’s big-name cast suggests that Calls is the ideal project for the pandemic era, when shooting in person has become more challenging than ever. Actors appearing — er, calling in — for the first season include Nicholas Braun (Succession ), Clancy...

Aubrey Plaza believes her “Happiest Season” co-star Kristen Stewart contracted the coronavirus while they were filming the movie earlier this year.  During a recent virtual appearance on “The Late Show,” Plaza was asked by host Stephen Colbert about filming the movie in late February just before the pandemic changed everyone’s way of life in March.  The actress noted that the virus was a topic of conversation on set, but it was not treated with the seriousness it deserved at first.  “Right before COVID, in fact, COVID was on our set,” she explained. “Kirsten got sick but we didn’t know.” AUBREY PLAZA TALKS 'TRAUMATIC,' PHYSICALLY TAXING ROLE ON 'LEGION': I GET 'KNOCKED AROUND' Aubrey Plaza revealed that her 'Happiest Season' co-star Kristen Stewart got COVID-19 while filming. Kristen Stewart is one of the first celebs to have contracted COVID-19, it seems. She might have had the disease even before Tom Hanks caught it in Australia and shook the world. By Lindsey Bahr | Associated Press ‘Tis the season of great Aubrey Plaza performances, apparently. The “Parks and Recreation” and “Legion” alum has been long overdue for a breakout film role, something fitting of her wide-ranging talent and more imaginative than just relying on her quirky deadpan and eye rolls. She’s been excellent before as a motivated teen in “The To Do List” and an empathetic social media stalker in “Ingrid Goes West” but the bigger studio comedies have largely failed her. Something finally clicked into place, though, and she has proven that she is on another level. And no, I’m not just talking about her effortlessly cool “Happiest Season” character, a side-player who became a social media favorite simply by existing. The movie is ” Black Bear,” a meta thriller about moviemaking, creativity and ego from writer-director Lawrence Michael Levine that debuted earlier this year at Sundance and is the kind of indie that can so easily get lost just because it is never going to be an Oscar contender. It also has the misfortune of being enormously tricky...

Hulu‘s lesbian romcom Happiest Season is getting pretty good reviews, but one crucial detail seems to have backfired. A lot of viewers wish that the protagonist Abby (Kristen Stewart) had broken up with her girlfriend and gotten together with someone else instead. Namely her new friend Riley, played by Aubrey Plaza. Hide Riley is the ex-girlfriend of Abby’s current partner Harper, played by Mackenzie Davis. And let’s just say that Harper doesn’t come across very well in the movie. She and Abby are introduced as a happy, loving couple, but Harper is still in the closet, leading to some majorly stressful situations when they travel to Harper’s family home for the holidays.
