A NEW universal basic income (UBI) program is set to launch that is set to give Americans payments of $750 per month.  Run in Champaign County in Illinois, the initiative is operating in a few phases.  1Champaign County families have been issued surveys to participate in the UBI program Currently, the UBI pilot is in its first round, where the identified homeless families have been issued surveys, Kim Nix, the connections program coordinator at the Regional Office of Education (ROE), told The Sun. The second part will include interviews with the families, school districts and community partners.  Once that’s done and the families are selected, the program will reach its final phase – which is when the monthly direct payments of $750 will begin.  The University of Illinois is partnering with the Regional Office of Education in running the pilot.  READ MORE ON PAYMENTSGET YOUR MONEY Four direct payments available to millions of Americans before the holidaysCASH CLAIM Exact date Americans have to claim one-time $300 direct payment this month Who is eligible?  The program aims to provide homeless families that have children attending school. ...

A program announced earlier this year that will provide universal basic income (UBI) for black women in Atlanta has begun, according to a Tuesday report. The program, which is being piloted by a nonprofit called the Georgia Resilience and Opportunity Fund (GRO), is called “In Her Hands.” “In Her Hands is a guaranteed income initiative focused on putting a solution to financial insecurity directly in the hands of women in Georgia. No strings attached,” according to the group’s website. According to GRO: The gap between dwindling paychecks and making ends meet for Black women has historically been larger and deeper than most other populations. Though people are incredibly resilient and resourceful with what they have, Black women are among the most likely group to experience cash shortfalls that make covering basic needs difficult. This isn’t the result of poor choices, it’s the result of pervasive economic insecurity that has the sharpest impact on women and communities of color and the people who live at the intersection of the two. As The Georgia Star News previously reported, the program is focused on...

These can be paid out every month, several times a year, or just once annually.  1The Yang idea of UBI is being used in some states This is an idea that entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who recently left the Democratic party, centered his 2020 Presidential campaign around.  Then Mr Yang, during his run for New York City mayor, floated the idea of giving half a million of lowest-income residents $2,000 payments each year.  And spoiler alert - he did not win.  During the height of the pandemic, multiple Covid-19 relief packages were passed that included stimulus checks to Americans on the federal level. However, those were not implemented to recur. Instead, those served the purpose of helping citizens in need stimulate the economy by giving them more money to spend during a financial downturn.  While it’s unlikely another stimulus package will get passed on the federal level, some states...

SOME areas in the country are experimenting with universal basic income (UBI), following multiple rounds of stimulus payments during the pandemic.  UBI is a set of recurring payments that individuals get from the government. 1A few more states will start launching UBI programs this yearCredit: Getty Unlike stimulus checks, they aren’t one-time payments.  Instead, UBI is sent out more consistently; for example, some cities in 2021 launched programs to send monthly payments to qualifying residents for a year or longer.  Many places in the country are using the funds from the American Rescue Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021, to run these programs. Also, most areas appear to be targeting a specific group of residents – particularly those living in poverty. Some areas in the country that launched UBI programs in 2021 include Columbia, South Carolina, and Los Angeles.   Some places that were offering UBI in 2021 will continue to offer it in 2022 and perhaps behind.  Most read in MoneyBIG BUCKS $1,657 checks being sent in DAYS in huge cost of living adjustment boostMORE MONEY New $5,200 stimulus checks being sent out...
Hundreds of black women in Atlanta will be the recipients of no-strings-attached monthly checks for the next two years thanks to a nonprofit’s experiment with Universal Basic Income (UBI). The program will be centered in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr., which reportedly has one of the worst poverty rates in the city. “We know this story of the Old Fourth Ward, and the trends that are happening, are not just indicative of this neighborhood, but what’s happening across the country,” Hope Wollensack said. Wollensack is the executive director of the Georgia Resilience & Opportunity Fund (GRO), which says it is “exploring bold solutions to racial justice — and engaging community members and policy decision makers to do it.” The UBI program will give away $13 million total over the next two years, but only to black women. Those women will receive an average of $850 per month, and a total of 650 black women will be enrolled in the program. They will be divided randomly into two groups. One group will simply receive...
ANOTHER area in the nation has approved a guaranteed income plan that will send $500 per month in payments. A two-year pilot program has been approved by the Rochester City Council this week, reports local TV station WHAM-TV.  1A total of 350 Rochester residents would get their hands on $500 payments for 12 months The program aims to provide $500 payments to 175 low-income families for the first 12 months.  Then, in the following year, a different set of 175 families Rochester, NY families would get the $500 monthly payments.  So, a total of 350 residents would be in line for some extra cash.  This would go out to households at or below 200% below the federal poverty level.  The guaranteed income program would cost $2.2million and be paid for using funds from the American Rescue Act. The program would mark the latest area in the country to experiment with universal basic income (UBI), which is a set of recurring payments. Eight-hundred low-income households are receiving monthly payments through the Compton Pledge guaranteed income program. By Melissa Chadburn for Capital & Main The city of Compton has been a lot of things: the site of fiery social conflicts with police in 1965 and 1992; the birthplace of West Coast gangster rap; and a hot spot for blight and foreclosures. But in 2021, it can be something else entirely: a role model for cities trying to provide struggling residents with a lift out of desperation. Specifically, Compton can become known for its universal basic income (UBI) program, which is among the largest such city-based efforts in the country. UBI programs offer an unconditional and often periodic cash payment. Unlike with traditional American public safety nets, there is no means testing, no work requirements. UBI recipients don’t have to disclose the backgrounds of people they live with. Funds are given as money rather than paid in kind as vouchers for food, transportation, or housing. With its 94,000 residents, the city has a deep well of seasoned community organizers who have long fought for improved...
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., on Wednesday said she will be introducing a universal basic income (UBI) program "this Congress." She said the plan will "get money in people’s pockets" in a Wednesday tweet reflective of comments President Biden made when he proposed an increase in weekly unemployment benefits for out-of-work Americans in January during the COVID-19 pandemic. "This is long overdue," the Minnesota congresswoman and "Squad" member said in the Wednesday tweet responding to an article from the Star Tribune about Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey's plan to give about 200 low-income families $500 a month over two years using excess American Rescue Plan funds. "Next step: Implementing UBI nationwide," Omar tweeted. "This Congress, I’ll be introducing a UBI pilot program to get money in people’s pockets." The COVID-19 pandemic forced Americans to think about the upsides and downsides of UBI. The Trump administration was first to issue direct $1,200 stimulus payments to individuals in the spring of 2020 as part of the $2.2 trillion CARES Act relief bill. The administration then issued $600 stimulus checks in the winter of 2020...
A county in California is helping fund a universal basic income (UBI) program that restricts participation based on race and sex. Officials in Marin County, California, have launched a UBI program in the county designed to give $1,000 a month to 125 qualifying residents for two years in partnership with the Marin Community Foundation. SAN FRANCISCO TO PAY 'ESSENTIAL' ARTISTS $1,000 PER MONTH The county is contributing $400,000 to the program, with the remainder of the estimated $3 million coming from the foundation.  The program is slightly modeled after a similar one that ran from February 2019 to February 2020 in Stockton, California. The Marin County program, however, has a couple of conditions for residents to receive payments: recipients must be women of color with a child under the age of 18. Chief executive of the Marin Community Foundation Thomas Peters confirmed the restriction to the Marin Independent in an email. OPINION: UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME PROGRAMS AND THEIR DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS "This first cohort will focus on low-income moms of color," Peters said. "We're starting with those moms with the greatest aggregate of challenges: low...
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Mayor London Breed on Thursday said she plans to immediately implement a number of recommendations from a new report on San Francisco’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, including a universal basic income (UBI) program that will provide $1,000 a month for local artists. The report released by the San Francisco Economic Recovery Task Force (ERTF) provided 41 recommendations to counter the negative effects of the pandemic on the city’s economy. The proposed pilot UBI program is part of the city’s plans to direct nearly $6 million in funding for artists, teaching artists, arts organizations, and cultural workers. The UBI program will provide up to 130 artists with $1,000 a month for at least six months starting early 2021. The city started the task force back in early April to find ways to counter an anticipated budget deficit of $1.6 billion, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides the UBI pilot program, the report recommends measures such as funding new public works projects, reducing regulations on businesses and extending the Shared Spaces program, which allows for...
