BOSTON (CBS) — You may have heard the term thrown around on your local weathercast lately – bombogenesis. Sounds like a great way to hype up a storm, right? Brings back memories of the dreaded “polar vortex” or “snowmageddon.” Bombogenesis is, in fact, a real meteorological term, and Saturday’s storm will fit the bill perfectly. The official definition: Bombogenesis occurs when a mid-latitude cyclone rapidly intensifies, dropping at least 24 millibars in 24 hours. The formation of this rapidly strengthening weather system creates what is known as a “bomb cyclone.” What do you need to get bombogenesis? Typically, a dramatic interaction or clash of airmasses (warm and cold) and it almost always happens over the milder ocean waters which supply the fuel for the storm to “take off.” How often does it happen? Typically only a few times per year. The last one that comes to memory was October 27, 2021. When it happens close to our coastline, you know it. It almost always means a big precipitation and wind event. Check out the forecast central pressures (in...

Last week, former President Donald Trump had the worst several days of his legal woes yet -- and he's far from alone in facing legal problems. Business Insider has outlined a list of Trump's allies who are facing their own legal challenges and they include Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg, who will appear in a Manhattan courtroom for the criminal case alleging fraud. Prosecutors have obtained 6 million pages of documents and a 115-page filing from the New York Attorney General showed a long list of financial decisions that misled investors and banks and possibly scored a tax break based on other manipulated information. Weisselberg is to appear Monday, Jan. 31. Trump has also been fighting the National Archives turning over any of the documents from his presidency, but the Supreme Court last week blocked his attempt. Trump's lawyers asked that nothing be turned over to the House Select Committee investigating Jan. 6 at least until Friday, Feb. 4. After the Supreme Court decision, however, the documents are on their way while Trump decides what to do next....

A NEW Covid variant has emerged in the UK - with over 400 confirmed cases. It is a sub-variant of Omicron, which appears to be able to spread faster but isn't thought to be any more severe. 2The sub-variant is in the UK but isn't a huge cause for concern, experts say It is known as BA.2, and has many of the same mutations as Omicron - with current case rates very low. A string of positive studies show Omicron is milder than other strains in the vaccinated - with vaccines thought to still be effective against this new variant, BA.2. The latest data from UKHSA found it appears to be able to spread faster than original Omicron, but more research is needed to be certain - with it now officially a variant under investigation. Experts have said there is little to be concerned about at the moment, and crucially, there is no evidence of it being any more severe. Health and Social Care Secretary, Sajid Javid, said: “We are learning to live with this virus - and thanks to our world-leading...
HEALTH officials are desperate to contain the Nipah virus in India, after it killed a 12-year-old boy. Nipah is "top of the list" of ten priority diseases that the World Health Organisation has identified as potential sources of future epidemics. And scientists have previously told The Sun Nipah could “absolutely be the cause of a new pandemic”. Up to three-quarters of people who are infected die, making Nipah virus around 75 times deadlier than estimated Covid mortality.   The southern Indian state of Kerala is quickly ramping up efforts to stop a potential outbreak of the virus, at the same time dealing with Covid.  Kerala is on high alert after the 12-year-old boy died...

Below we lay out the documents you will need for your application and the type of questions you will be asked during your interview so you can be prepared. 1If you apply for food stamps, you can expect to be interviewed What happens at a food stamp interview? To make sure you are eligible for food stamps and to determine how much you will receive, people applying for the benefits have to go through an interview. Food stamps are also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The person conducting the interview can elect to hold the interview in person or over the phone, and they will ask questions about your living situation and income resources. At the beginning of the interview, you will be asked to verify your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, citizenship status and current address. The interviewer will typically also ask if you have bank accounts, retirement funds, stocks, and what the balances are in those accounts. Therefore, it is...
OMICRON is putting thousands of people into self-isolation every day. But thankfully, some rule changes mean if you are one of those struck with the variant, you don’t need to stay at home for as long as before. 1Lateral flow tests are the key to getting out of self-isolation earlyCredit: Getty If you develop symptoms of the virus, the first thing you must do is self-isolate, regardless of vaccine status. A positive lateral flow test does not need to be followed up with a PCR test on the NHS unless you have symptoms. For example, someone who tests positive on a lateral flow after being exposed to someone with the virus does not need to get a PCR test, but must start their self-isolation. How long do you need to self-isolate? The standard self-isolation is ten full days. It starts the first day after your symptoms began, or after you got a positive test result. Can I leave self-isolation early? You can leave self-isolation sooner than ten days under some circumstances. If you are unvaccinated, there is no option to...

When gyms began to shut down across the nation thanks to social distancing measures, I didn’t panic. Instead, I got my personal trainer certification from the American Council on Exercise to help folks make the most out of the space in their homes. After working out in tiny spaces in my living room for the better part of two decades (it all began with low-resolution Pilates DVD’s I bought from infomercials back in the early aughts), I’ve garnered enough strong opinions about the most important home gym essentials you can fit into any space and budget. While working out at home might sound daunting after so many sedentary months of re-watching The Office, or relying on the familiarity of equipment and trainers at your local gym, introducing more at-home movement into your daily routine is an incredibly rewarding experience. You’ll gain strength that’ll make activities of daily living easier, you’ll boost your cardiovascular endurance to help you master those stairs when your building’s elevator shuts down *yet again*, you’ll sleep better at night and wake up more rested, and...

Everything you need to know about MLW’s anti-trust lawsuit against WWE WWE is no stranger to controversy for its business practices. The company was built on trying to monopolize the professional wrestling industry and on absorbing smaller competition, which it continues to try to do even today. There have been a few occasions where the smaller wrestling promotions have stood up to WWE’s aggressive business tactics, with the newest among these being Major League Wrestling (MLW). Major League Wrestling (MLW Media LLC) filed an antitrust lawsuit against World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (WWE) on Jan. 11, 2022, alleging that WWE had attempted to influence third parties into canceling current contracts and potential business deals with them as per their press release. An example of this was said to have occurred during MLW’s talks with VICE TV in 2021, a relationship that WWE owner Vince McMahon was allegedly angry about and did not want to happen. WWE’s behavior is said to have resulted in losses on all levels for MLW, with the professional wrestling juggernaut also allegedly blocking a streaming deal that...
Big changes hit both UFC 272 and UFC 273 planned main events. UFC 272 looks a whole lot different than it did last week. Originally, Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway was going to complete their trilogy, but just two days after the fight was announced Holloway was forced out of the bout with an injury. Everyone from Giga Chikadze to Chang Sung Jung was clamoring for a chance at a short-notice replacement call-up. The main event of that card was supposed to be the rematch between bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling and interim champion Petr Yan. Neither of these are happening … at least not at UFC 272.Colby Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal to headline now vacant UFC 272UFC 272 needed a headliner and now it has one. According to Brett Okamoto, Colby Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal will fight a five-round, non-title fight. Both Masvidal and Covington are coming off losses to the current 170-pound champion, Kamaru Usman. Masvidal competed against Usman in his last two fights, first losing at UFC 251 via decision, then getting stopped at UFC 261 via knockout. Covington last...
SolStock | E+ | Getty Images During these hard times, at least one thing should should soon get easier: Getting tested for Covid-19. Starting Saturday, many people will be able to get free at-home tests, thanks to a new initiative by the Biden Administration. Here's what you need to know.Who can get the free tests? The 150 million Americans who have private health insurance are eligible. Medicare is not included in the program, but those who have Medicare Advantage may be covered and should check with their plan for more details. Medicaid offers some reimbursement; enrollees should contact their state program for additional guidance. Short-term or health-care sharing plans typically don't have to participate, said Sabrina Corlette, co-director of the Center on Health Insurance Reforms at Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy. How does it work?If you have private health insurance, you should be eligible for reimbursement after you buy an at-home Covid test. The Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Vikings already were eliminated from playoff contention entering Sunday’s season finale at U.S. Bank Stadium. But in what potentially could be his last game as Bears coach, Matt Nagy still expects his team to put forth its best effort to end the season on a three-game winning streak. The Bears beat the Seattle Seahawks and New York Giants after their loss to the Vikings officially knocked them from the playoff race. “We all play to win the Super Bowl. That’s why we coach, that’s why we play,” Nagy said. “The biggest challenge as a player, as a coach is to make sure that we maintain that obligation to do everything that we’ve been doing … and keep fighting like you would if you had a chance, and that’s what I’m proud of with these guys. “When there’s adversity that strikes and when things don’t go as well as you want it to go, how do you react? Do you change? Do you treat people differently? Are you a different head...
You may have heard the recent news about the I-95 shutdown in Virginia, which left hundreds of people trapped in the cars during a dangerous snowstorm. Or, 2021's unprecedented winter power crisis in Texas that left millions without power (and access to essentials like food and water) in the freezing cold for over a week. Of course, regardless of the season or where you live, it's important to have a winter emergency survival kit for home and car (and a general emergency preparedness kit while you're at it) in the event that a natural disaster, power blackout, floods, or other safety crises should occur. According to the CDC, it's best to stay inside and avoid the roads during a winter storm, but it's important to have your car equipped with cold-weather essentials in the event that you should need to vacate. It's essential to have vehicle safety accessories and tools on hand including tire chains, rope, windshield scrapers, and cat litter or sand to help assist with traction. With that being said, it's equally as important to arm your...

Quarterback Andy Dalton will make his first start in nearly a month in the Chicago Bears’ home finale at Soldier Field on Sunday against the New York Giants. Dalton hasn’t played since a 33-22 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 5. He broke a bone in his non-throwing hand in that loss, had a hip flexor strain during his recovery and tested positive for COVID-19 — all in the last month. Now Dalton, who is nearing the end of his one-year contract with the Bears, will try to lead the Bears to their first back-to-back wins since Oct. 3 and 10. Rookie quarterback Justin Fields continues to recover from an ankle injury and is listed as questionable. Nick Foles, who led the Bears to a comeback victory over the Seattle Seahawks last week, will back up Dalton. “It’s kind of been a crazy month for me,” Dalton said. “But I feel good about where I’m at now and my body feels healthy. And so I’m happy to be where I’m at now rather than where I...

Funding methods for Pennsylvania public schools are on trial as the gap between wealthy and impoverished districts continues to widen. It’s been over four weeks since the landmark case William Penn School District, et al v. Pennsylvania Department of Education, et al began proceedings before Judge Renee Cohn Jubilerer at the Commonwealth Court in Harrisburg. The case has been seven years in the making and began when a lawsuit was filed way back in 2014 on behalf of six school districts, seven families whose children attend Pennsylvania schools, and two organizations, including the NAACP Pennsylvania State Conference. Petitioners believe that lawmakers have failed to comply with the state constitution’s requirement that the General Assembly “provide for the maintenance and support of a thorough and efficient system of public education to serve the needs of the Commonwealth” in a nondiscriminatory manner. With proceedings resuming on Jan. 3, now is a good time to recap what has brought the plaintiffs to this point. At issue in the lawsuit is how the General Assembly distributes funding to the 500 school districts around the state. Spotlight Pennsylvania notes that Pennsylvania ranks near...

Quarterback Nick Foles will try to lead the Chicago Bears to their first win in a month when he makes his first start of 2021 on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field. Foles is starting because Justin Fields is recovering from an ankle injury, and Andy Dalton is out with a groin injury. The Bears elevated rookie quarterback Ryan Willis from the practice squad Saturday, and he potentially could be Foles’ backup if the Bears decide to make Fields inactive. Bears coach Matt Nagy said they were weighing Willis’ preparedness against whether Fields would be OK to play in an emergency. Foles hasn’t played in a regular-season game since 2020 when he went 2-5 as the Bears starter, throwing 10 touchdown passes and eight interceptions. He injured his hip and glute against the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 16, 2020, the Bears turned back to Mitch Trubisky and Foles didn’t start again. Aside from Fields and Dalton being out, the Bears enter Sunday with nine players still on the reserve/COVID-19 list: defensive lineman Akiem Hicks,...
LATERAL flow tests are an easy and quick way to find out if you have Covid. With increasing use of the kits amid the spread of Omicron comes a barrage of questions about their reliability. 1A lateral flow test kitCredit: AFP Hundreds of thousands of people are using the rapid tests at home every day, hoping to see a negative result. But sometimes the result may confuse you and leave you none-the-wiser about if you have Covid. For example, what should you do if you have coronavirus symptoms, but a negative lateral flow test? And what does it mean if you have a positive lateral flow, but a negative PCR days later? Do the tests pick up Omicron, considering doctors in South Africa claimed they are less reliable in doing so? We asked Dr Nathan, an A&E doctor in London, who has recently been producing helpful posts on his Instagram page (@expedition_doctor) that explain all about Covid lateral flow tests (LFTs). What mistakes do people make when taking their lateral flow? “Failing to spot a positive test.  “Any positive line within...
The Chicago Bears have 14 players on the reserve/COVID-19 list heading into tonight’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. But they at least will have defensive coordinator Sean Desai back in the fold after he was in COVID-19 protocols last week. Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and special teams coordinator Chris Tabor are still out. We have all the Week 15 updates from Soldier Field. Pregame The Chicago Bears announced more bad news regarding their COVID-19 outbreak Sunday when they placed starting cornerback Jaylon Johnson and safety Tashaun Gipson on the reserve/COVID-19 list. That gave them 14 players on the list heading into Monday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field. Johnson and Gipson were two of several big names in an outbreak that especially has affected an already depleted Bears secondary. Starting safety Eddie Jackson and cornerback Artie Burns, who started the last three games in place of Kindle Vildor, are also on the list, as is nickel Duke Shelley. Meanwhile, cornerback Xavier Crawford is out because of a concussion and safety DeAndre Houston-Carson...

There is something otherworldly about ferns. Their fronds suggest feathers and wings, and so when looking at them you may think of taking flight, most likely into the pre-historic past when they dominated the landscape before flowering plants bedecked the earth. Ferns are classified as pteridophytes; the root meaning of “fern” is feather, while the root meaning of “pteridophyte” is winged plant. Ferns reproduce by spores, which are mistakenly compared to seeds. Spores are found on the undersides of fronds in receptacles known as sori.  Sori are easy to identity as they are typically brown, bumpy structures arranged in symmetrical rows.  When sori open, spores are ejected onto the soil below. However, the spore of a fern does not germinate into another fern but rather into a gametophyte. The sprouted gametophyte is typically microscopic, heart-shaped, and contains both male and female reproductive structures. When the gametophyte reaches maturity, a sperm from the male structure swims through water on the soil surface and fertilizes an egg in the female structure. An embryo develops from the fertilized egg and will eventually mature...
With the omicron variant making its way into the United States, the NFL and NFLPA had to make sweeping changes to their COVID-19 testing protocols. The NFL and NFLPA have agreed to massive changes when it comes to COVID-19 testing protocols. This comes in the wake of three Week 15 games (Las Vegas Raiders at Cleveland Browns, Washington Football Team at Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Rams) being rescheduled mid-week due to massive COVID outbreaks within three clubs (Browns, WFT, Rams). While the omicron variant is considered to be more contagious, it is nowhere near as deadly. Here are the drastic changes made by the league when it comes to its COVID-19 protocols. What you need to know about the NFL’s changes to the COVID-19 protocolsThe Athletic reports that starting on Sunday, only unvaccinated players and those showing COVID-19 symptoms will be tested for the virus. Asymptomatic players will be tested randomly throughout the rest of the season. Unvaccinated players will still undergo daily testing. This is a major change from the frequent testing the NFL and the NFLPA...
Just when you think you've dodged the coronavirus, up pops a new variant: Omicron.  The good news is that the new COVID-19 variant is milder than the Delta variant, but chances of reinfection are nearly five times higher, according to a recent study by the Imperial College London. The Chicago Bears are hoping a couple key players return from injuries when they take on the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday night. But will that be enough to slow down the NFC North leaders? Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields is set to return from a two-game absence because of cracked ribs. And his receiving corps gets a boost with Allen Robinson set to come back from a hamstring injury. The Bears need all the help they can get to break a losing streak against the Packers that reached five games in October. The Bears last beat the Packers in 2018 and haven’t won at Lambeau Field since 2015. “(A win) would be everything,” said defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, who won’t play Saturday because of a lingering ankle injury. “It would recharge our season. The things that have happened we can’t take back. We can’t change the outcome of the games that we’ve played thus far. But it says something about a person, it says something about a team about how you finish....
With the MLB lockout in full effect, there are several questions surrounding how MLB players and teams will operate in the ensuing months. The MLB hasn’t seen a work stoppage since 1994, and that year was a challenging one for professional baseball. Players protesting the advent of a salary cap, which caused the MLB to cut its season short and cancel the World Series for the first time in 90 years. The strike ended after 232 days on April 2, 1995, marking the longest work stoppage in MLB history. Ideally, the 2021 MLB lockout won’t last as long, but the difference between a strike and a lockout is paramount: in this case, MLB owners dictate the terms, not players. Because of this, players are not allowed to communicate with their teams at this time, and teams cannot sign MLB free agents. For free agents like Freddie Freeman, Clayton Kershaw and Trevor Story could wait months before signing with a new team. The tenuous situation presents many questions, some of which FanSided can answer today — and some for...
