Auli is about 95 kilometers from the Line of Actual Control (LAC), an inhospitable piece of land where the disputed border between India and China is roughly demarcated. The drills will take place as part of the 18th edition of an annual joint exercise known as "Yudh Abhyas" -- or "War Practice".Relations between India and China have been strained since a bloody clash between their soldiers in the Himalayas in June 2020 left at least 20 Indian troops and four Chinese soldiers dead.Read MoreTensions have been raised further recently by China building a bridge across the Pangong Tso lake that sits along the border -- a move condemned by the Indian...
BEIJING (AP) — China said it was conducting military exercises Saturday off its coast opposite Taiwan after warning Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the U.S. House of Representatives to scrap possible plans to visit the island democracy, which Beijing claims as part of its territory. The ruling Communist Party’s military wing, the People’s Liberation Army, was conducting “live-fire exercises” near the Pingtan islands off Fujian province from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., the official Xinhua News Agency said. The Maritime Safety Administration warned ships to avoid the area. Such exercises usually involve artillery. The one-sentence announcement gave no indication whether Saturday’s exercise also might include missiles, fighter planes or other weapons. Pelosi, who would be the highest-ranking American elected official to visit Taiwan since 1997, has yet to confirm whether she will go. President Xi Jinping warned his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden, in a phone call Thursday against “external interference” in Beijing’s dealings with the island. China says Taiwan has no right to conduct foreign relations. It sees visits by American officials as encouragement for the island to make its decades-old...

WASHINGTON (AP/CBS13) — The Navy has issued letters of censure to three Marine and two Navy officers in connection with the sinking of an amphibious assault vehicle off the Southern California coast in 2020 that killed eight Marines and Stockton sailor Chris “Bobby” Gnem. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, in a statement Monday, faulted the officers for “inadequate leadership and execution of their oversight duties.” Censure letters are put in service members’ personnel files and are often career-ending for military officers, usually preventing them from further promotion or other progress. HELSINKI (AP) — NATO kicked off nearly a two-week U.S.-led naval exercise on the Baltic Sea on Sunday with more than 7,000 sailors, airmen and marines from 16 nations, including two aspiring to join the military alliance, Finland and Sweden. The annual BALTOPS naval exercise, initiated in 1972, is not held in response to any specific threat. But the military alliance said that “with both Sweden and Finland participating, NATO is seizing the chance in an unpredictable world to enhance its joint force resilience and strength” together with two Nordic aspirant nations. Finland and Sweden both have a long history of military non-alignment before their governments decided to apply to join NATO in May, a direct result of Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Over the past years, Moscow has repeatedly warned Helsinki and Stockholm against joining the Western military alliance and warned of retaliatory measures if they did. Ahead of the naval drill, which involved 45 vessels and 75 aircraft, the top U.S military official said in Sweden — the host of the BALTOPS 22...
China has admitted it carried out a military exercise around Taiwan as a 'solemn warning' against its 'collusion' with the US.  Joe Biden angered China on Monday by suggesting the US would intervene if China invaded Taiwan, signalling a change in the policy of 'strategic ambiguity'. He clarified on Tuesday there was no change to policy. The Chinese People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command said it had recently carried out a patrol and drill in the airspace and sea around Taiwan. 'This is a solemn warning against recent collusion between the United States and Taiwan,' said spokesman for the command, Shi Yi said, according to state television. KRIVOLAK, North Macedonia (AP) — U.S. troops joined forces from Britain, France, Italy and allied countries in the region Thursday in a military exercise held in NATO’s newest member, North Macedonia, aimed at displaying deployment readiness along the alliance’s eastern borders. Nearly 10,000 soldiers from 19 nations are taking part in NATO’s planned “Swift Response” exercises as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues for a 12th week. The exercises are being held in five separate locations, spanning from Norway to North Macedonia, military officials said. “I think it’s a fantastic demonstration of what we can do as an alliance and our ability to project combat power if asked to do so and how quickly we can do it,” Maj. Gen. Peter B. Andrysiak, U.S. Army Deputy Commanding General for Europe and Africa, told reporters after an hourlong display in North Macedonia. TOKYO (AP) — U.S. and Japanese warships, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, are conducting their joint naval exercise in waters between Japan and the Korean Peninsula for the first time in five yeas, in a show of their close military alliance amid growing speculation of North Korea’s missile or nuclear testing later this week. The U.S. 7th Fleet and Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force said Wednesday they conducted a joint naval exercise at the Sea of Japan on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was the first time the U.S. aircraft carrier held the exercise in the area since 2017 and is seen as an apparent attempt to deter North Korea’s provocation. Defense experts have warned that North Korea may launch another missile or even conduct a nuclear test as early as this week when Pyongyang marks the birth anniversary of its founding leader Kim Il Sung. Tension is rising in the region ahead of an annual joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea. Japan has also stepped up joint military exercises with its...

By The Associated Press The latest developments on the Russia-Ukraine war: COPENHAGEN, Denmark — A planned NATO exercise with about 30,000 troops from more than 25 countries from Europe and North America began in northern Norway on Monday. NATO said that the drill, named Cold Response that includes 200 aircraft and 50 vessels, was “not linked to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine.” The drill in NATO-member Norway, which shares a nearly 200-kilometer (124-mile) land border with Russia, will be held just a few hundred kilometers (miles— from the Russian border and was planned long before Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia has declined to be an observer at the exercise that aims at having Alliance members and partners practicing working together on land, in the air and at sea, said the armed forces. The Norwegian armed forces said it provided “thorough information” to the Russians, including the Russian Ministry of Defense, saying that was “vital for preventing misunderstandings and unnecessary conflict.” The drill, which is held every other year, is due to end on April 1. ___ WASHINGTON —...
Mullen won a conference championship with Monmouth University in 2019 The New Jersey family of Kyle Mullen, the Navy SEAL trainee who died after completing the grueling, 20-hour-a-day 'Hell Week' training course, said that they were 'devastated' by his loss, but 'proud' of his commitment to the US armed forces and completion of the notorious exercise. Mullen, 24, a college football star from Manalapan, NJ, successfully finished the brutal endurance program, but died in California on February 4 of still unknown causes. The family did not go into the investigation into his cause of death, but said that they were overwhelmed by the outpouring of grief over his loss and love for their son by his friends.  They said: 'While we are devastated by Kyle's loss, we could not be more proud...'   'Over the past few days, we have been awestruck at the outpouring of love and support that we have received,' the family posted on Facebook. 'Kyle has a seemingly endless impact on the world, touching the lives of many. Everywhere we turn is another friend or neighbor who has a...
Russia is planning to hold a nuclear strategic exercise, UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said on Thursday, despite extreme tensions surrounding Ukraine. Wallace warned that the Kremlin's actions were heading in the wrong direction despite efforts to find a diplomatic solution, declaring intelligence suggested that Russia that Russia was engaging in plans for so-called 'false flag' operations as a pre-text for invading Ukraine, as well as carrying out cyber attacks and other destabilising activity. 'Despite the talking, the direction of travel is in the wrong way,' Wallace told BBC Radio.  'The Russians are still growing their battalion tactical groups... They are planning to start a nuclear strategic exercise soon, and indeed we see more activity elsewhere.' A Russian defence source also told news agency TASS earlier this year that the nuclear exercise, known as 'Thunder', would involve all three prongs of Russia's strategic nuclear forces, testing firing procedures from land, sea and air. Nuclear drills are held frequently in Russia, but the decision to proceed with such exercises in the face of the tension circling Ukraine will give world powers more...
Russia would be able to overrun Ukraine in just two days in an invasion that could kill 50,000 civilians, according to US intelligence.  Western intelligence assessments also believe Kyiv's government would fall within that timeframe, and lead to a humanitarian crisis involving around 5million refugees.  The likelihood of a diplomatic resolution of the crisis appears to be increasingly slim, the analysis concluded.  Referring to an earlier build-up last year, one European official - speaking on condition of anonymity - told the Washington Post: 'Our worry would be that you don't park battle groups … on the border of another country twice and do nothing.  'I think that's the real fear that I have. [Putin's] now put them all out there. If he does nothing again … what does that say to the wider international community about the might of Russia?'  It comes as US military and intelligence officials believe Russia is set to run a major nuclear weapons exercise in the coming weeks as a warning to Nato not to intervene in the event of Putin invading Ukraine, the Financial Times reported.  Russia...
Getty Houston Police and other local agencies will be holding a drill in the city on February 5, 2022. Houston Police and city officials are warning residents about an upcoming large-scale emergency drill on Saturday, February 5, 2022, featuring law enforcement agencies from around Texas along with military personnel. The Department of Defense and other Houston-area local and federal agencies will be taking part in the training. According to a police press release, the training will continue in the city through February 12, 2022. The city of Houston said in a statement, “On Saturday, February 5, local first responders from the Greater Houston and surrounding areas will be conducting a large-scale emergency drill located at Westlake Park Campus in the Energy Corridor in Houston. The exercise will last from 8 a.m. to after midnight.” The city added in a press release from the Office of Emergency Management, “Please expect a large presence of law enforcement and other emergency officials in the area on this day and remember this is only a drill to help us better respond...
By Jim Heintz | Associated Press MOSCOW — Russia says it will relocate naval exercises off the coast of Ireland after Dublin raised concerns about them amid a tense dispute with the West over expansion of the NATO alliance and fears that Russia is preparing to invade Ukraine. The Feb. 3-8 exercises were to be held 240 kilometers (150 miles) off southwestern Ireland — in international waters but within Ireland’s exclusive economic zone. Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney this week objected to the war games, saying “This isn’t a time to increase military activity and tension in the context of what’s happening with and in Ukraine. The fact that they are choosing to do it on the western borders, if you like, of the EU, off the Irish coast, is something that in our view is simply not welcome.” Russia’s embassy in Ireland on Saturday posted a letter on Facebook from Ambassador Yuriy Filatov saying the exercises would be relocated outside of the Irish economic zone ”with the aim not to hinder fishing activities.” The decision was a rare concession...
BANGKOK (AP) — A U.S. Navy F35C Lightning II combat jet conducting exercises in the South China Sea crashed while trying to land on the deck of an American aircraft carrier, injuring seven sailors, the military said. The pilot ejected during the “landing mishap on deck” of the USS Carl Vinson on Monday. The pilot was recovered by a military helicopter and is in stable condition. In total, seven sailors were injured, three who needed to be evacuated for medical treatment in Manila, Philippines, and four who were treated on board the ship. The three sent to Manila were reported in stable condition on Tuesday morning, the Navy said. A U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesman said he had no more details on what caused the crash, which remains under investigation, or whether the multimillion-dollar aircraft could be recovered. Two American carrier strike groups with more than 14,000 sailors and marines are conducting exercises in the South China Sea, which the military says is to demonstrate the “U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Joint Force’s ability to deliver a powerful maritime force.” As China...
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard on Tuesday fired cruise missiles during a major military exercise across the country’s south, media reported. The semiofficial Tasnim news agency, believed to be close to the Guard, did not specify the type and range of the missiles. But it said five cruise missiles and an unspecified number of attack drones successfully hit their targets. The Guard in the past has said it has cruise missiles with ranges of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). It also has missiles that range up to 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), more than enough to reach archenemy Israel and U.S. military bases in the region. The five-day annual exercise that began on Monday came days after the breakup of talks to revive Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers. Iran has accelerated its nuclear advances as negotiations to return to the accord struggle to make headway. From time to time, Iran holds military exercises, saying they are aimed at improving the readiness of its forces and testing new weapons. Last month, Iran’s military began its annual war games...

The Russo-Ukrainian war is in the news again. Not content with its annexation of Crimea — when is an aggressively expansive imperialist country ever content with Crimea once it’s got it in the pocket? — Russia has amassed an invasion-sized force at the border of Ukraine, and is busily mobilizing reservists sufficient to provide an occupation force. The usual pundit voices can be heard discussing the geopolitical implications of the buildup, sifting through tea leaves and undisclosed sources to explain why it’s just another training exercise (Russia’s official explanation), or how Putin and Russia have been provoked by the aggressive expansion of NATO westward, and why the Budapest Memorandum wasn’t legally binding, or how Ukraine has always been Russian anyway, so why shouldn’t they just snap it up and something about spheres of influence. The effect—perhaps the purpose— of all these cynical and wearisome discussions is that Americans and others with a modicum of interest in the subject throw up their hands in frustration, and say “Let it be.” This would be a mistake, especially for those observers who...
BEIJING (AP) — Chinese military forces are holding exercises near Taiwan in response to a visit by a U.S. congressional delegation to the island. The drills in the area of the Taiwan Strait are a “necessary measure to safeguard national sovereignty,” China’s Defense Ministry said in the announcement Tuesday that gave no details on the timing, participants and location of the exercises. It said the “joint war preparedness patrol” by the Eastern Theater Command was prompted by the “seriously incorrect words and actions of relevant countries over the issue of Taiwan” and the actions of those advocating the self-governing island’s independence. The U.S. has strong but informal relations with Taiwan, and tensions have been rising between the U.S. and China over several issues including Hong Kong, the South China Sea, the coronavirus pandemic and trade. Details on the U.S. delegation that reportedly arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday were not immediately available. A Chinese Defense Ministry statement from an unidentified spokesperson strongly condemned the visit, saying “no one should underestimate the firm determination of the People’s Liberation Army to safeguard...

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley on Thursday accused the Pentagon of preparing U.S. armed forces for culture wars rather than real wars after their humiliating 'defeat' against British Royal Marines in a training exercise. U.S. forces had to ask for a 'reset' halfway through the five-day mock battle in the Mojave Desert as they took heavy simulated losses. It comes with the Pentagon already under intense scrutiny, following the hurried withdrawal from Afghanistan and Taliban takeover.  And this week the US Navy fired a nuclear submarine's commanding Officer, executive Officer and chief of the boat for after their vessel collided with an 'uncharted seamount' in the South China Sea.  Hawley said competitors such as China would be baffled by the U.S. approach. 'They're probably wondering why it is that people like General Milley and Secretary Austin spend so much time recommending books on white rage, on critical race theory and are not more focused on warfighting,' he told the 'Ingraham Angle' on Fox News. TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran on Thursday kicked off an annual air force drill across the country, a week after holding another massive exercise in air defense, state TV reported. The report said bombers, jet fighters, and attack and surveillance drones will participate in the drill, using heavy weapons including laser-guided missiles. It said all Iranian military air bases will participate in the maneuver. Reportedly, Iran has 12 air bases. The report did not say how long the drill will last. It came a week after Iran held a two-day annual air defense drill in the country’s sprawling central desert, with both the army and the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard taking part. Iran regularly holds such drills and says they assess the troops’ combat readiness and demonstrate the nation’s military capabilities. The region remains on edge over Iran’s escalating nuclear program. Talks in Vienna to revive Tehran’s now-tattered 2015 accord with world powers have stalled since June, with no date set for their resumption. The 2015 nuclear deal saw Tehran drastically limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting...
As it often does when it wants attention or respect, the kingdom of North Korea conducted a grand display of military masturbation yesterday featuring large missiles, a flyover of fighter jets, and a training exercise by soldiers that can only be described as utterly preposterous. During a report on the exhibition, CNN showed footage from North Korean state television showing soldiers engaged in various exercises. One soldier appears to have had his arm smashed with a sledgehammer. Another is shown executing an impressively high jump kick as he smashes through blocks. But the most ridiculous display involved a soldier who ran – headfirst – into what appeared to be two solid blocks made of something most people wouldn’t want to kneel on, let alone ram into at full speed whilst leading with the dome. Now, this is North Korea we’re talking about, so it’s well within the realm of possibility that those solid blocks were actually props of some kind. On the other hand, this is North Korea we’re talking about, so it’s well within the realm of...

The US military has destroyed and sank a retired warship in an exercise designed to prepare the military to 'decisively apply force in the maritime battlespace'. The ex-USS Ingraham - a US Navy guided-missile frigate - was blown apart using multiple weapons during a sinking exercise called SINKEX in the Hawaiian Island Operating Area on Sunday. In footage of the explosion the ship appears to lift out of the water upon impact with the torpedo and then quickly crumbles. The video then cuts to a clip of the ship where only the bow is seen above water, just before it's completely submerged in the Pacific Ocean. Weapons involved included a Super Hornet-launched AGM-154 Joint Stand-Off Weapon (JSOW) and a Naval Strike Missile (NSM) launched from the Marine Corps' new unnamed ground-based launch vehicles. MOSCOW (AP) — Russia’s defense minister on Friday hailed joint war games with China this week as a sign of increasingly close military cooperation that should expand further. Sergei Shoigu flew to China to attend the drills that wrapped up Friday in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. “We have achieved a high level of cooperation between our militaries on land, in the air and at sea,” Shoigu said during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, “Expanding it is an important part of our future activities.” The Russian military sent several Su-30SM fighters and a motorized infantry unit to take part in the maneuvers. Shoigu noted that the exercise marked the first time that Russian troops had taken part in joint drills on the territory of China, adding that it reflected a “new level” of military cooperation, to the benefit of regional and global stability. In a statement about the exercise, the Russian Defense Ministry quoted Wei as saying that it was intended to increase the ability “to jointly respond to risks and challenges” and wasn’t aimed against any third country....
Hong Kong (CNN)The United States Air Force is sending more than two dozen F-22 stealth fighters to an exercise in the western Pacific this month, an unusually large deployment of the powerful jets that analysts say sends a strong message to a possible adversary in China.Pacific Air Forces in Hawaii this week said approximately 25 F-22s Raptors from the Hawaii Air National Guard and from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, will deploy this month to Guam and Tinian islands for Operation Pacific Iron 2021.The F-22s are fifth-generation combat jets, the world's most advanced fighter aircraft, incorporating stealth technologies and connecting on-board sensor systems with off-board information systems to give their pilots a detailed view of the battle space. U.S. military forces in Europe started their exercise Tuesday that will put 28,000 troops from 26 countries near Russian territory for over six weeks, with a focus on the Balkans and Black Sea region. European Command's largest multinational exercise comes on the heels of an alleged Russian military exercise involving some 100,000 troops massed on the eastern border of Ukraine and in occupied Crimea. The long-planned American exercise will test infrastructure and interoperability in NATO’s southeastern flank, home to the former countries of Yugoslavia and the European Union’s poorest member states but also some that spend big on defense. The Pentagon said a major difference between Russia’s exercises and the U.S. exercises will be clear. “It's a defensive exercise, and you will be able to hear us talk about it and communicate to you and to the world what we're doing and why,” Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby told the Washington Examiner. China’s latest military exercise near Taiwan on Monday “could be a rehearsal of a reunification-by-force operation,” China’s state-run Global Times suggested Tuesday. “The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted an exercise near the island of Taiwan on Monday with the largest number of warplanes ever recorded, which could be a rehearsal of a reunification-by-force operation,” the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece wrote on April 13. China’s PLA deployed 25 aircraft to fly over Taiwan, breaching its air defense identification zone (ADIZ), on April 12, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) said in a statement. The PLA’s exercise included “14 J-16 and four J-10 multirole fighters, four H-6K strategic bombers, two KQ-200 anti-submarine warfare (ASW)-capable aircraft, as well as one KJ-500 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platform,” the military website Janes reported Monday, citing the MND’s statement. The air sortie was the PLA’s largest near Taiwan since the sovereign nation began publicly reporting PLA aircraft movements over the island in September 2020. “The number of PLA warplanes featured in the [April 12] exercise was a record since Taiwan’s defense authorities began to...

More than 1,000 troops from at least five NATO member states will participate in the training later this year, The Hill reported. The exercises, described on the Facebook page of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, will aim to support Ukraine’s “territorial integrity” in the face of “aggression from one of the hostile neighbor countries” — presumably Russia. The announcement came less than a day after President Biden, in his first official phone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky, pledged his “unwavering support” to Ukraine — and as US defense officials voice increasing concern over an apparent buildup of Russian military might in Crimea. By Josh Smith SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea and the United States will conduct its springtime military exercise this week, but the joint drill will be smaller than usual because of the coronavirus pandemic, Seoul said on Sunday. The allies will begin a nine day "computer-simulated command post exercise" on Monday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. South Korea and the United States decided to move forward with the drills after "comprehensively taking into consideration the COVID-19 situation, the maintenance of the combat readiness posture, the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of peace," the JCS said, noting that the exercise is "defensive" in nature. The drills will not include outdoor manoeuvres, which have been carried out throughout the year, and the number of troops and equipment will be minimized due to the pandemic, Yonhap news agency reported. The exercises also provide a chance to assess South Korea’s readiness to take over wartime operational control (OPCON), and the series of scaled back drills could complicate President Moon Jae-in’s drive to complete the transfer before...

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's air force began a "surprise exercise" to improve combat readiness along the country's northern border, the military said on Monday. The military said that during the drill, will which last until Wednesday, there would be an increase of air traffic throughout the country and that explosions could be heard in northern Israel. It said the "exercise simulates combat scenarios in the northern front, and will test all components in the (air force's) core missions, including maintaining aerial superiority, protecting the country's skies, as well as attacking and gathering intelligence." Israel says it has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria against Iranian targets trying to establish a permanent military presence there, and against advanced weapons shipments to Tehran-backed Lebanese militia Hezbollah.
