CHARLOTTE, N.C, (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have re-signed kicker Zane Gonzalez to a two-year contract after he helped solidify the kicking position last season. Gonzalez was set to become an unrestricted free agent next week. Gonzalez joined the team in Week 2 and made 20 of 22 on field goal attempts, including 17 straight before sustaining a quadriceps injury during pre-game warmups against the Buffalo Bills that ended his season. His 90.9% success rate on field goals was ninth-best in the league. He also made 22 of 23 extra points. Gonzalez won two two special teams player of the week awards last year, going 4 of 4 on field goals in games against the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals. He also converted a career-long, 57-yard field goal. ___ More AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl and https://apnews.com/hub/pro-32 and https://twitter.com/AP_NFL Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. Joe Burrow knew Evan McPherson must be a special kicker if the Cincinnati Bengals were willing to spend a fifth-round pick on a position usually filled by undrafted players and journeyman. But the Bengals targeted McPherson and made him the only kicker taken in the 2021 draft, a decision that has been validated by one of the NFL’s greatest postseason kicking runs. “Obviously kickers aren’t usually drafted that high, but I figured if we’re drafting a kicker, he’s going to be really good for us,” Burrow said this week. “Then I met Evan and you kind of know how a kicker is going to perform based on how he reacts and interacts with people in the locker room. All the kickers can kick it and put it through the uprights, but it’s really how you handle the intense situations that’s going to really make or break your reputation as a kicker.” McPherson survived the friendly ribbing from his new teammates and dished it back himself, showing the Bengals he was ready for the NFL. But nothing has been more...

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are adding kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, who is in line to make his NFL debut if Greg Zuerlein doesn’t clear COVID-19 protocols before Sunday’s game against Atlanta. Hajrullahu worked out Wednesday along with former Dallas kicker Brett Maher. Hajrullahu kicked for Winnipeg, Toronto and Hamilton in the CFL from 2014-19, making 83% of his field-goal attempts. The 31-year-old native of Europe was with the Cowboys late in training camp while Zuerlein was recovering from back surgery. When Zuerlein’s health was in question early in the season, Hajrullahu was on the practice squad briefly. Coach Mike McCarthy said he was hoping Zuerlein would be available against the Falcons, but acknowledged it was a long shot. Zuerlein was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list Tuesday. The 33-year-old Zuerlein has had issues with accuracy this season, going 14 of 18 on field goals with two missed extra points. “Greg the Leg” is 1 of 3 from at least 50 yards this season. Hajrullahu matched his career high of 47 field goals in his most recent CFL...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have another new kicker, signing Randy Bullock off their practice squad, and safety Amani Hooker becomes the latest starter on injured reserve. The Titans announced the moves Tuesday, a day after releasing kicker Michael Badgley. Bullock was a fifth-round draft pick in 2012 by the Houston Texans. He spent the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals making 21 of 26 field goals, and the Titans are his sixth NFL team. Bullock has converted 83.2% of field goals in his career, making 168 of 202 field goals and 215 of 225 extra points. Hooker, who tied for the team lead with four interceptions last season, left the opener with a foot injury. The Titans also signed...
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — It’s been a focal point on the Patriots all summer long. A battle for a roster spot at a position where only one man can start. A heated, back-and-forth competition between an unproven rookie and an established veteran who played a big role in winning games for the team a year ago. READ MORE: Bill Belichick Doesnt Offer Much Of An Update On Stephon Gilmores Injury, Contract Situation We’re talking, of course, about the kicker. (Were you thinking of something else?) The kicking duties this summer have largely fallen on the shoulder of undrafted rookie Quinn Nordin, as the veteran Nick Folk has mostly been a spectator due to what he deemed as “a little bit of soreness.” Nordin impressed in his debut, going 3-for-3 on field goals (including a 50-yarder) and going 1-for-2 on PATs. But his follow-up performance in Philly was a bit of a nightmare, with the rookie missing three kicks — two PATs and a chip shot field goal. On Sunday night in the preseason finale, Folk got his...
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots might have found something in undrafted kicker Quinn Nordin. The 22-year-old — who went undrafted in April after playing in just four of Michigan’s six games last season — found a spot on the Patriots’ summer roster, and he’s clearly doing his best to make the most of it. After being perfect in the two practices held within Gillette Stadium in the past couple of weeks, Nordin was nearly perfect again on Thursday night in the Patriots’ preseason opener vs. Washington. Nearly perfect. He got his first opportunity with a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter, and he split the uprights. Perfectly. His second attempt was more challenging, a 50-yard field goal to the other end of the stadium. He drilled it. Perfectly. And he came on for another field goal to cap off the first drive after halftime. Forty yards. Perfect. Another one for @QuinnNordin. pic.twitter.com/8OKazBlBd1 — New England Patriots (@Patriots) August 13, 2021 The perfection ended, though, in the fourth quarter. After a Rhamondre Stevenson touchdown put the...
Cristiano Ronaldo has still got it. Getty/UEFA At Euro 2020, Cristiano Ronaldo is proving he's still the man, both on and off the field. On Wednesday, the 36-year-old equaled the record for most international goals scored in a career. He has also produced the dominant off-field story of the tournament with his distaste for Coca-Cola. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Cristiano Ronaldo, one of soccer's greatest ever superstars, is proving at Euro 2020 why he's still the man, both on and off the field. During Portugal's 2-2 draw against France in its final group game on Wednesday evening, Ronaldo scored both his country's goals, in the process adding another record to his already lengthy list of goal scoring achievements. In scoring twice, Ronaldo moved alongside Iran's Ali Daei to become the joint top goalscorer in international football history on 109 goals. One more and he'll hold the record solo. Despite turning 36 in February, Ronaldo's performances so far in the tournament have proven no other star in world football attracts the attention he does. No player...
Bam Adebayo ended Sunday’s game between the Heat and Nets with a bang, draining a midrange jump shot as time expired and giving Miami a 109-107 victory. MORE: Nets’ Kevin Durant leaves game vs. Heat with thigh injury The buzzer-beater capped off a terrific all-around performance from Adebayo, who finished with 21 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two steals in 33 minutes. That shot represented the work Adebayo has put in to become much more than just a rim-rolling athlete. The 23-year-old has already made tremendous strides early in his career and shown he will be an offensive force in the league for quite some time. And yet, Adebayo’s display on the defensive end in that contest was even more impressive than his crunch-time heroics, particularly his work against Brooklyn star Kyrie Irving. Adebayo limited Irving to zero — yes, that’s zero — field goals when facing him as the primary defender, per ESPN Stats and Info. Keep in mind Irving is averaging 27.3 points per game this season while approaching 50-40-90 shooting splits (field goals, 3-pointers and free throws).  Along with the buzzer-beater, Bam Adebayo held...
