This is not a knock on drinking water, something that we should all adopt as our go-to beverage to accompany meals, quench thirst, hydrate, help us live well, and all the other wonderful things water does. All that said, sometimes it’s just a resounding moment to sit back with something cool to sip on, chat with a friend, and enjoy a distinctive flavor. There are common choices — lemonade, soft drinks, iced tea, fruit juice — but there is also a wonderful option to surprise friends with to provide an old familiar flavor with a DIY turn of fermentation. Ginger beer is easy to make, and it involves few ingredients. It delivers a natural explosion of flavor as well as a bevy of medicinal benefits, brought on by both the ginger and the (short) fermentation process. It may even sneak in a little negligible alcohol to the mix. Mostly though, ginger beer is a damned fine something special to sup on a sweltering afternoon, a drink worthy of shared memories and quiet moments, a real reason to stop and enjoy...

STONEHAM (CBS) — Fire investigators in Stoneham have determined that sunlight and a beer bottle helped start a house fire on Hersam Street last year. The blaze started on the second-floor back deck, where there were glass bottles, cigarette butts, and combustible trash items. Initially, investigators thought the discarded cigarette butts were to blame, but it turned out no one had been on the deck in the hours leading up to the fire. READ MORE: BC Study Finds More White, Rural And Wealthier Teens Report Carrying Guns“We had a K-9 come in to make sure there were no accelerants, and we worked to rule out every possible cause we could come up with and narrowed it down to smoking or our rare solar theory,” said Stoneham Police Sgt. Video and photos from the area confirmed no one was on the deck and demonstrated that the deck received about five hours of direct sunlight before the fire, which, investigators said, is enough time for the sun’s rays to be...

A rolled-up message in a beer bottle hidden in the Michigan Central Station in 1913 by two labourers has been discovered by two modern-day construction workers. Foreman Leo Kimble and labourer Lukas Nielsen of plaster contractor Homrich found the pre-Prohibition-era bottle in the station's tea room on May 4 this year. It was discovered upside-down, stuck behind the top of a high section of crown moulding the duo had been preparing to remove while riding on a scissor lift. When the message — much of which is unclear — was carefully unrolled later on, experts found it contained the names of two men and the date 'July 1913'. The men, whose surnames appear to be 'Hogan' and 'Smith', must have been working to build the station, which opened to the public on January 4, 1914. The date of '7-19-13' stamped on the bottle — whose label identifies is as once containing 'Stroh's Bohemian Beer' — narrows down when the message was left. Long vacant, Michigan Central Station was bought by the Ford Motor Company in 2018. Renovations will see it transformed into a...

DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — With restaurants and bars all closed due to pandemic restrictions, a Duesseldorf brewery found itself with 6,000 liters (1,585 gallons) of its copper-colored “Altbier” unsold and nearing its expiry date. But with trying times come novel solutions. Fuechschen Brewery brewery paired up with craft bakers already using leftover grains from the brewing process to produce loaves of “Treberbrot,” or “Spent Grain Bread.” “It would have been such a shame to just toss out such a tasty beer,” said Peter Koenig, whose family has run the brewery since 1908. “Then we came up with this idea to bake the bread with the beer, to leave out the water,” he said Tuesday. “I think it’s great that these two craft industries have come together like this.” About a dozen bakeries have been producing the Treberbrot since the start of the week, giving the added bonus of a bottle of Fuechschen’s Altbier, a regional specialty, for free with each loaf. “It’s a very hearty, tasty bread with a crispy baked crust and a soft middle,” said baker...

People who drink a bottle of beer or small glass of wine each day are up to 25 per cent more likely to be obese, a study of 26million people has found. Moderate drinking is often regarded as safe by health chiefs, who permit up to 14 units spread out over the week, the equivalent of 'one a day'.  But the latest study suggests even this level of drinking, described as 'light' by South Korean researchers, can lead to health problems including obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. The conditions together are known as metabolic syndrome, and the odds of being diagnosed rises in tandem with alcohol consumption, the study found.  Drinking more than the one large glass of wine or pint of full strength beer raised the odds of obesity by up to 42 per cent in men. Alcohol may lead to weight gain because of the mixers it is served with, which pile on hundreds of calories in one sitting. It can also contribute to a poor diet and interrupt sleep - both of which are key to...

They say that wine improves with time; how long to consume wine, beer and tequila There is a phrase that says that good wines get better with age, but how much is true and if so, does it apply to all drinks? You have probably wondered how long you can drink alcoholic beverages before and once you open the bottle. Beer, wine, and tequila are made with different processes and ingredients. Although they all go through fermentation. So we will see what happens in the specific case of each drink. Tequila Tequila is a distillate exclusively made from the “blue variety tequilana weber agave” and it is not a perishable product as long as it is hermetically closed. “Like other spirits, tequila does not lose its characteristics over time. To achieve this, it is necessary to keep it hermetically closed, since when exposed to air, alcohol evaporates “, explains Casa Sauza, whose distillery in Tequila (Jalisco, Mexico) started in 1873. Once opened, it must be consumed within 6 to 8 months for the best taste according to the...
