As Orioles executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias said at a table in Camden Yards’ auxiliary clubhouse with a first overall pick beside him, he couldn’t help but reflect on the previous time he had done so. Three years ago, the Orioles introduced Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman as effectively the face of their nascent rebuilding project. When they welcomed Oklahoma high school shortstop Jackson Holliday to Baltimore on Wednesday after officially signing him to an $8.19 million contract, a record for a high school draft pick, they added a player who they hope will add to their foundation, not begin it. “It felt like we were just kind of starting something, and [Rutschman] was a big piece of a big project we were trying to build,” Elias said. “And I look now, and this has a totally different feeling to me adding Jackson’s talent right now. Our organization, I think, is in the healthiest spot it’s been in in a very long time. We’ve got a major league team, to their credit, that’s up here playing a...

It's free to add your name to the flash drive, said NASA spokesperson Kathryn Hambleton. FAMILIES across the country will receive $300 checks tomorrow, and those who don't sign up for child tax credit payments by Monday will be missing out on a December stimulus payment that could make holiday planning easier. Eligible families can expect the fifth installments of the expanded Child Tax Credit payments to arrive in their bank accounts on Monday. 1After the November 15 payment, After the November 15 payment, parents can expect one final monthly payment in December, but they need to sign up right away. November 15 is the deadline to register for December payments. To sign up, families can either use GetCTC.org or the IRS’s website and access the CTC update portal. In 2022, families will receive the remainder of their Child Tax Credit benefit as part of their 2021 tax return, and those who miss the deadline to sign up can claim the entire CTC when they file. Monthly payments will stop in December unless lawmakers decide to extend the expanded program. The purpose of the bill, signed by Joe Biden in March, is to help families get by and to bring the US economy back up to...
IT’S the last chance for families to sign up for enhanced child tax credit (CTC). Because of the American Rescue Plan, many families have received four CTC payments but there are still some who are eligible that haven’t signed up yet.  2Families have until November 15 to sign up to receive their CTC paymentsCredit: Getty The clock is ticking—families have until November 15 to receive half of their CTC payments for 2021. If they miss the deadline, they can claim the entire CTC after filing 2021 taxes next year. Many low-income families who don’t usually file tax returns are able to receive them for the first time, meaning the IRS needs their banking information to send them the advance payments. Anyone who hasn’t received their payments can register with the IRS. To sign up, families can either use GetCTC.org or the IRS’s website and access the CTC update portal. Signing up now will give families a check in December amounting to six months worth of payments. Most read in The US SunCOMMENTS MADE NFL star and legendary college coach address...
svetikd | E+ | Getty Images Millions of American families with kids have received three monthly payments since July totaling $45 billion through the new enhanced child tax credit. There's a limited amount of time for families with eligible children to sign up if they didn't get the checks automatically, likely because they don't traditionally file a tax return. The IRS non-filer portal will be open through Oct. 15, according to the agency, meaning there's just one month left for families to use it. "If parents haven't already gotten the payment and they're eligible for it, it's not too late to sign up," said Ashley Burnside, a policy analyst at the Center for Law and Social Policy. "They can use the IRS portal, that's still an option." After October, families will be able to use GetCTC.org, a site launched by Code for America in collaboration with the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the White House, to sign up for the credit through mid-November, according to a Treasury official. lisegagne | E+ | Getty Images So far, two monthly payments totaling $30 billion have gone out to American families with kids through the new enhanced child tax credit benefit. For families that have eligible children but haven't signed up — likely those that don't traditionally file a tax return — there is still time to enroll and receive monthly payments. In fact, the remaining payments will be larger than if someone had signed up before they began in July. More from Invest in You:How to navigate the child tax credit payments processHas the 4-day workweek's time come? Some predict it will catch onChild tax credit payments will help offset loss of pandemic programs That's because the monthly money is an advance on a 2021 tax credit, half to be delivered this year and the rest to come when families file their taxes next year. The IRS said it will try to deliver the entire first half of the credit to families this year even if they sign up late, splitting the money among fewer, larger monthly checks. "Even if...
WASHINGTON (AP) — With the Obama health care law undergoing a revival under President Joe Biden, this Sunday is the deadline for consumers to take advantage of a special sign-up period for private coverage made more affordable by his COVID-19 relief law. A strong close would bolster Biden’s case that Congress needs to make permanent the temporary boost in health insurance subsidies provided by the COVID legislation. His campaign promise to build on existing programs to move the U.S. toward coverage for all may also gain credence. The government says more than 2.5 million people have signed up since Biden ordered the HealthCare.gov marketplace to reopen Feb. 15 to account for health insurance needs in the pandemic. Then, starting in April, the cost of coverage came down due to sweeter subsidies in the COVID law, which attracted more enrollment. Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, are hoping that this deadline weekend in mid-August will surprise skeptics. “We’ve seen even in the last couple of weeks increased interest in enrollment,” Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure said in...
The Los Angeles Unified School District is preparing to fully reopen campuses for in-person classes on Aug. 16. For parents who do not want to send their child back to campus, an online option is available through the district’s independent study program. Students will be automatically enrolled for in-person class at their school unless they register for independent study by Friday, Aug. 6. Online schooling in LAUSD this school year will be different from the remote learning that began when campuses shut down in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. What’s offered for 2020-21 is an online, independent study program run by the district and called the City of Angels school. Students in this program will not be learning from teachers or be online with classmates from only their neighborhood campus. Instead they’ll receive instruction from City of Angels teachers with children throughout their community. The online program is available for transitional kindergarten through 12th grade. As of last week, LAUSD officials said fewer than 1% of students are signed up for online independent study. More...

CHICAGO (CBS) — Illinois is getting ready for the massive effort to vaccinate more people. Almost 2 million people in the state 65 and older or essential workers will be eligible Monday. Each shot requires an appointment. Gov. JB Pritzker is looking at pharmacies as a main option in Phase 1B, but limited doses and hardships — even finding where to sign up — can make it difficult to get the shot. Most people will need use their pharmacy’s website to register. The first ones in the state’s lineup are Jewel Osco, CVS and Walgreens. There are pages dedicated to COVID-19 vaccine, but registration is hard to find. For example, on Jewel Osco’s site you can navigate to vaccine page, but after clicking, information does not appear updated. The state says changes should come by Monday. “Already today, the Walgreens site is up and running. And the others will follow,” Prtizker said Friday. The state says it hopes to have its own site up for pharmacy and county health department information, but it is unclear when that will be in place....
