In 2018, Kristin Hooker had been taking antidepressants for 20 years. She would try a new medication, which might work for a little while, but then her depression would return and she’d have to try something new. Eventually, she ran out of new medications to try. “I just wasn't finding a medication that really worked anymore,” the 39-year-old told The Daily Beast. “So, I became severely depressed, and I knew that I needed something else.” After several unsuccessful alternative therapies, the Portland-based writer came across Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). It’s a type of non-invasive brain stimulation that applies magnetic pulses to the head to activate neurons in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, a brain region that is thought to be dysregulated in people who are depressed. Hooker didn’t have especially high hopes for the treatment, but after learning that side effects are generally mild, she figured she might as well give it a try. (Mild headaches are a fairly commonly reported side effect, while more serious side effects, such as seizures, are very rare.) Every weekday for eight weeks,...

VACCINES are common for young children in order to build their immunity and protect against a variety of illnesses. There are some routine vaccines which are given to all babies on the NHS, this includes the first polio jab. When do babies get the polio vaccine? The polio vaccine is a combination of three doses of immunisation, each protecting against the three types of polio. Childhood immunisation schedule starts at eight weeks old, where babies are given two injections and drops into the mouth. This protects against eight known illnesses, one of which is polio along with hepatitis B, tetanus and others. At 12 weeks, the baby will go for their second injections and drops to boost the existing immunisation. 1Babies get a number of vaccinations at eight weeks oldCredit: Getty Finally at 16 weeks they will get their third polio injection as part of the six in one jab, which provides up to 99% immunity from the virus. During her pregnancy, the mum was inundated with comments saying the size of her belly wasn't normal. Despite people's comments and what doctors have said, Renae insisted she doesn't suffer from any medical conditions - polyhydramnios, extra fluid or gestational diabetes - that would explain the larger-than-normal bump. Wade at risk of being overturned by the Supreme Court, 2022 is shaping up to be a historically bad year for reproductive rights. And while anti-choice lawmakers have been working toward this for decades, they’ve only gotten bolder with their moves in the past few years.  If the court does away with Roe, 26 states will put in place bans or severe abortion restrictions, according to data from the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive rights think tank. Meanwhile, emboldened by the passing of other abortion bans in previous years, Republicans politicians have passed abortion bans left and right this year, setting reproductive rights back nearly half a century: In the first four months of this year alone, lawmakers across 42 states introduced a grand total of 536 bills restricting access to abortions—86 of which effectively banned abortion outright. So far, six states have successfully passed versions of these bans, and most of them look eerily familiar....
A Welsh man who spent over half a year battling Covid at home is thought to have become the first person in the world to be cured of the virus by getting vaccinated. Ian Lester, from Pontypridd, who has a rare genetic immunodeficiency, got infected in December 2020, before jabs were widely available.  During his seven-and-a-half-month illness, the optician suffered with chest tightness, headaches and extreme fatigue. He wasn't able to get vaccinated when immunocompromised people were invited to get the jab because he was still testing positive for the virus.    But scientists at Cardiff University decided to give him two doses of Pfizer's jab, one month apart, in the hope it would work as a therapeutic and help his immune system finally clear the virus.  Results showed levels of the virus plunged 64-fold within a fortnight of the first jab, showing how quickly the vaccine had an effect.  Mr Lester was eventually declared Covid-free in August, 72 days after getting his first vaccine. The case, detailed in a medical journal, is thought to be the first time a vaccine...

President Biden lifted his travel ban on eight African countries imposed at the onset of the Omicron variant on Tuesday.  The highly contagious but potentially less deadly Omicron strain is now the dominant Covid variant in the US, and was first discovered by scientists in South Africa in late November. Biden quickly moved to ban travel from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi in response. Citing stricter testing requirements for international travelers, Biden said such a ban was no longer necessary, as the Omicron variant is now widespread in the US and many other nations beyond sub-Saharan Africa.  'Having learned more about the Omicron variant in the past several weeks, the CDC now recommends lifting the travel restrictions,' Biden said in a statement. He noted that the CDC now requires travelers to test negative for Covid-19 within one day of international traveler rather than within three days prior to travel. The Biden administration also requires international travelers to be vaccinated.  The CDC encourages - but does not mandate - international air travelers to get a new COVID-19...
Shamed former Rep. Katie Hill says she has COVID while eight months pregnant despite being fully-vaccinated and receiving her booster. Hill, 34, made the announcement on Twitter on Saturday, and said that she is not suffering from severe symptoms.  'I'm boosted and got COVID and am now quarantined for Christmas while almost 8 months pregnant,' her tweet read.  'And though my symptoms are mild I really wish I'd cancelled my plans for the couple weeks before this so stay safe out there, folks,' Hill added. The former Congresswoman later shared on social media that she 'never stopped wearing masks'  when asked if she had stopped protecting herself from COVID-19 after getting her booster shot.  On Monday evening, the Centers for Disease Control announced that Omicron is now the dominant COVID strain the US, accounting for 73 per cent of all new cases - but up to 90 per cent of diagnoses in states including New York and New Jersey. Meanwhile, the United States' first confirmed Omicron death has also been recorded - an unidentified man in his 50s from Houston...
The Pac-12 Conference didn’t do the Stanford Cardinal any favors when the 2022 football schedule was released on Thursday. Stanford, coming off its worst season in 15 years, opens the season with back-to-back home games, but faces teams that are playing in bowl games this season in eight of its final nine games. Five of those games are on the road, including against the lone non-bowl qualifier of the season-ending stretch, Cal, in the Big Game on Nov. 19. The Cardinal, which was 3-9 last season but on Wednesday announced a recruiting class widely considered No. 1 in the Pac-12, is the only team in the conference with a bye week scheduled earlier than week six. Coach David Shaw’s team gets a break in Week 3 after home games against Colgate and USC, before consecutive road games at Washington and Oregon. Stanford plays 10 straight weeks to conclude the regular season, and four of those opponents — Notre Dame, Utah, BYU and Oregon — are currently ranked in the Top 15 of the Associated Press poll. ...
The United States Senate voted 89 - 10 on Wednesday to authorize $770 billion in defense spending over the next fiscal year. This year's National Defense Authorization Act, an annual must-pass piece of legislation, will now head to President Joe Biden's desk with $25 billion more in the final budget than he initially requested. Authorizing about 5 percent more military spending than last year, the 2022 NDAA is a compromise after intense debate between House and Senate Democrats and Republicans and being stalled by disputes over China and Russia policy.  Some of that funding will go toward a 2.7 percent pay raise for all service members and the Pentagon's civilian workforce. One notable addition is 12 weeks of paid family leave for service members who are new parents - the same number Biden was trying to secure for all American families in his progressive Build Back Better bill before his efforts were stymied by moderate Democrats.  In a win for Republicans, a recent addition includes safeguards for service members who don't comply with Biden's vaccine mandate for the federal government...

more   The Kellogg Company said it plans to replace plant workers who have been on an almost eight-week strike. In a series of statements covering the ongoing dispute, the cereal giant said that after a lengthy discussion with The Bakery and Confectionery Workers International Union of America (BCTGM), negotiations fell apart. “We will continue to run our plants effectively with hourly and salaried employees, third-party resources, and temporary replacements, and now where appropriate, hire permanent replacements,” the statement read. It concluded, “Our first choice is to have our employees return to work. We continue to welcome those who choose to return to work, as we have since the strike began. Employees seeking to do so can contact their HR manager.” The BCTGM called for a strike by its roughly 1,400 members in early October at Kellogg plants located in Battle Creek, Michigan; Omaha, Nebraska; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Memphis, Tennessee. At issue, the union said, is the Company’s implementation of a two-tier employment system that would essentially take away benefits from the plant employees, and slowly take away employees’ rights...

When Cathy Jamieson wanted to get married, she took the usual route by submitting an application for a marriage license to the Santa Clara County Clerk-Recorder. It was late July, and after six days of waiting, she finally got a response. It would take eight weeks to get the license, the office told her, so if she needed it sooner she could either go to another county or try calling a list of specialized public notaries. “It almost seems they don’t understand the importance of weddings,” Jamieson said. “It was so stressful.” The clerk’s office in Santa Clara County, which also handles death certificates and fictitious business names, is reporting extended wait times of eight weeks to get a virtual marriage license appointment or ceremony conducted, assistant county clerk Louis Chiaramonte acknowledged. For that, he blames COVID-19. Before the pandemic, all marriage services were done in person. While other Bay Area counties are not reporting delays as long as Santa Clara County’s, some still have longer wait times than usual for a license or ceremony. In Alameda County, the wait...

Hundreds of thousands of United States servicemembers remain unvaccinated or are only partially vaccinated against the coronavirus, as the deadline to have the shot draws closer.  The vaccination rates vary between military branches, according to data obtained by the Washington Post, with 98 percent of the active duty Navy fully vaccinated. There are almost 340,000 such personnel, with the two per cent who haven't been jabbed representing close to 7,000 people.   Meanwhile, just 72 percent of the 181,000 active Marine Corps personnel have been vaccinated - meaning close to 51,000 have yet to have the jab.  Both branches have to be fully vaccinated by November 28, under the Defense Department's August mandate. Figures show that 81 percent of Army members are fully vaccinated. That branch of the military has 485,000 members, with the 19 per cent who remain unvaccinated representing well over 95,000 personnel. And more than 60,000 people in the Air Force have just three weeks to meet their deadline to be fully vaccinated. The rate, though, is worse for members of the Army National Guard and Army Reserves...

The veteran forward will be re-evaluated in eight weeks. Ariza has not played for the Lakers this preseason, and with the regular season quickly approaching, they will have to adjust their forward rotation to factor in his absence.  That will be no easy task. The Lakers are an extremely guard heavy team. Eight of the 14 players currently on the roster are guards, and two more are centers. That leaves them with only four players most would classify as forwards: Ariza, who is out, Anthony Davis, whom many expect to play center this season to give the Lakers extra spacing alongside Russell Westbrook, and the combination of LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. With Ariza out, the Lakers are going to need more forward minutes out of those remaining forwards. That likely means either pushing Anthony into an expanded...

Which reportedly meant a likely starting lineup of Russell Westbrook, Wayne Ellington, Trevor Ariza and LeBron James behind him. But Ariza is sidelined with an ankle injury. Lakers release: Lakers forward Trevor Ariza had an arthroscopic debridement procedure performed on his right ankle today. He is expected to make a full and complete recovery. Team doctors will reevaluate Ariza in approximately 8 weeks, and an update will be provided at that time. Injuries aren’t completely predictable. But by building a roster heavy on older players – like Ariza, 36 – the Lakers left themselves more susceptible to issues like this. That said, Los Angeles is playing to compete deep into the playoffs. If Ariza misses some of the early regular season – which opens in less than two weeks – but is fresh...

A player on IR is eligible to return after missing a minimum of three games, but that clearly won't be an option for Mostert this time around.  Additionally, Shanahan unveiled that cornerback Jason Verrett tore his ACL and is out for the season. Shanahan said shortly after Sunday's win that it was feared Verrett would be lost for the campaign with that exact injury.  Mostert had 20 yards on two carries in Sunday's outing before he suffered the setback. The harrowing reality of Mississippi’s COVID-19 crisis was on full display this week as health officials announced the deaths of eight pregnant women, a surge in pediatric deaths, and the first death of an infant since the pandemic began. At a Wednesday press conference, health officials said the baby was aged under 1. “It’s been a rough month and a half,” State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs told reporters, noting that the Delta variant has “caused a lot of unnecessary deaths.” Among the most recent deaths were at least eight pregnant women who left behind their babies. “Sadly, we’ve seen a pretty significant number of pregnant women not survive COVID in recent weeks,” Dobbs said, per the Sun Herald. “Currently we are investigating eight reports of pregnant women who have died within the past several weeks, all of whom are unvaccinated.” He pleaded with expectant mothers to get vaccinated; the state has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country. “Please get vaccinated. You’ve got to protect yourself, you’ve got to protect your baby. You’ve got to protect...
The Covid Delta variant may finally have started to peak in the US - amid speculation it has followed the same two month trajectory as other prior mutations.    While cases in the United States are still rising, the rate has slowed in recent weeks, leading many experts to believe the variant that devastated the nation is running out of fuel. Cases grew by 67 percent from August 2 to August 16, from 85,000 per day to 142,000 per day, and only 15 percent, 139,000 per day to 160,000 per day from August 17 to 31. The sharp decline in case rise could be a blip on the radar, a brief respite before a larger spike to come, or it could be the beginning of the end of 2021's summer surge. Previous surges have often last around two months, though, and with Delta first erupting in the Midwest at the end of June, this peak could represent the mutation following the same schedule as prior variants, which began to fall after two months.  Cycles of...

A HAIRDRESSER has revealed that instead of carefully shampooing her hair every few days, she actually does it every EIGHT weeks. She added: “Then you need to persist and keep going with those extra days for a few months. “& just keep going slowly over time adding an extra day. “Once your hair has adjusted… add or alt an extra day for at least six months.” Michelle explained that the process can take from months to years and “patience and persistence” is key.” The hairdresser says she has over 23 years of experience and is a colour...
