Police are on the hunt for a suspect that beat a Democrat candidate in his yard days after he received multiple threats. Richard Ringer, a Pennsylvania state house candidate out to unseat Republican Rep. Matt Dowling in the upcoming election, was attacked Monday at 5am when he approached a man attempting to open his garage. Ringer has received other threats in the past few weeks, including a brick that was thrown through a window in his house and a message on his garage that read: 'Your race' and 'dead.'  The democratic candidate said he left his home on Monday to find a man with a flashlight.  'A guy was standing with his back to me,' Ringer told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. 'He was larger than I am and he pinned me down on my left side. I'm right-handed and he had my right arm pulled back and he hit me 10 to 12 times in the head, in the face and by the eye and he knocked me out.' He couldn't provide the cops with a description of the suspect. It's...
WHAT if you could add thousands of dollars to your home's value, without changing a single thing inside? One expert said that focusing on the backyard is key to making your home more appealing and helping it sell for a big payout. 2Treating your yard or garden as the centerpiece of your home can increase its valueCredit: Shutterstock Outdoor spaces are becoming more important to prospective homeowners, with 85 percent of home buyers putting a garden toward the top of their wish lists. According to UK-based expert Lisa, a professional home stylist who spoke to Toolstation, the idea of "curb appeal" goes beyond painting your front door and keeping a tidy lawn. "Showing maintenance of your garden already gives the impression you care for your home inside and out," she explained. Keeping up your lawn and garden also shows buyers what their future could be like. A tipster led Hackensack police to a small single-family home in a modest neighborhood where they said they found 62 mature marijuana plants in an "elaborate" outdoor grow. A Bergen County Regional SWAT team led a court-warranted raid on the Hamilton Place home near the Maywood border and seized the plants, along with resident Anthony Dias, 64. Detectives "were acting on an anonymous tip received from the public regarding an illegal marijuana farm in operation within this quiet residential neighborhood" when they made the discovery, Hackensack Police Director Ray Guidetti said. They "conducted a comprehensive investigation to identify the source of the illegal marijuana grow and culminated their investigation with the arrest of Dias" on Thursday, Oct. 6, the director said. Dias was charged with two first-degree counts of maintaining and operating a drug-production facility -- specifically by producing more than 50 pot plants weighing more than 25 pounds, which is illegal in New Jersey. He remained held Friday in the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
For decades, wetlands got a bad rap. They were associated with diseases, and they were drained or filled in. They were destroyed, both for development and agriculture. In 1984, it is estimated that over 50 percent of the wetlands of the US had been destroyed. However, it is a new day with a new respect for nature, and it turns out that natural wetlands were performing all sorts of eco-systemic functions. They are, of course, habitats for all sorts of creatures, big and small. But, they also help to prevent erosion, mitigate flooding, and clean water. While our backyards can hardly recreate the expansive wetlands that once were, we can begin to create micro-systems that perform some of the same functions as full-fledge wetlands. Plus, they are much more fun than cultivating more St. Augustine or Kentucky Blue. Making a wetland in your backyard can be an interesting and useful experiment that can benefit your property and the wildlife around it. Source: Texas Parks and Wildlife/Youtube What is a Wetland? COLLEGEVILLE, Pa -- Jonathan Retano and Aaron Keller started Fun Fieldz 10 years ago as a way to get kids back outdoors. The idea is simple, they bring the ball game (field, equipment, and even announcers) to your backyard. "If you're watching the Phillies, imagine that being shrunk and miniaturized, put it in the truck and deliver it to your house for Wiffle ball", says Retano. They do all the set-up and take down, from the field posts to the painted lines. It's not just wiffleball, they also do football, soccer and other backyard activities. "(We have) obstacle courses, giant soccer balls, we have a rubber chicken race" says Keller. While kids' birthday parties are the most popular, they said they do their fair share of adult events as well.
EVEN expert gardeners have trouble keeping pests away from their lawns. If your yard is overrun by bugs, snails, slugs, or other critters, the secret to maintaining your garden might be planting more flowers. 1Adding 'sacrificial plants' to your garden can keep pests at bay, experts saidCredit: Getty According to the gardening experts at House Beautiful, there are certain plants you can add to your garden to keep pests at bay. Called "sacrificial plants," the companion plants are often hardier and attract pests that would normally devastate your garden. "Plant-munching pests might be frustrating, but they play an important role in planet-friendly gardening and maintaining a healthy ecosystem," the experts explained. By using "trap crops," you can control pests without introducing heavy pesticides or chemicals to your outdoor ecosystem. SOME popular items are better off left out of your garden - and the answer might surprise you. Though terracotta pots have been a longtime garden staple for many, one expert advises that the clay containers could dry out your plants. 3The gardening YouTuber says thatCredit: YOUTUBE/Pickard Home & Garden 3The lack of flexibility in terracotta pots can cause roots to stick to the bottomCredit: YOUTUBE/Pickard Home & Garden According to Pickard Home & Garden, terracotta pots will ruin your plants by drying them out and by damaging the roots. "I will never recommend using pots like this when you're growing plants from seeds," gardening YouTuber Meryem says. The gardener goes on to say that the material can dry out your plants as clay absorbs water, meaning that you'll have to tend to them constantly. She also says that the lack of flexibility in the popular pots can cause roots to stick to the bottom when you try to transfer the plant into other containers or into the ground. What is it about the honeybee community that draws humans into their world? Watch this informative breakdown of bee experience, bee-human relations, and, most pressing, the threats to bees today (skip to 5:50 for threats). Source: TED/Youtube Bees are cooperative, intuitive, hard-working, living beings whose labor is exploited for their fruits (superfood honey). The process of human-bee interaction, the human chemical-agricultural input changes, monocultures, and the fact that “we’ve stopped planting cover crops” for soil fertilizers and bee food, all equal major consequences for bees worldwide. Humans have helped, in some way or another, to create, enable, and excel bee population destruction. We’ve done this by not planting bee-attracting crops, using pesticides/herbicides/insecticides and other agricultural chemical inputs that leach the soil of nutrients, destroy crops, create superweeds and superbugs and eventually poison and starve bees. We’ve also done this collectively through honey production and transporting bees to pollinate human-desired mass amounts of crops like almonds. We have been planting more and more crops for the dwindling number of bees to pollinate. They’re tired. They’re sick. They’re dropping dead...

A few weeks ago, a lifelong dream came true: I welcomed a trio of brown hens to our small, urban backyard. These perky transplants from Petaluma wasted no time exploring their new surroundings and were especially eager to check out their futuristic-looking coop and hunt for bugs in the grass. Birds have always been some of my favorite animals. As a child, I had a particular fascination with parrots, but any kind of bird would do. That’s how one fateful day at the library, where I was once again looking for books on birds, I found a volume about chickens. I knew a lot about wild animals and pets, but not about farmed birds. The contents of said chicken book were enough to turn this young teenager into a steadfast vegetarian, and my love for farmed animals only grew over time. I was thrilled then to finally be in a position to adopt three rescued hens from Animal Place, a Bay Area nonprofit organization that saves commercial layer hens from being killed, or what the chicken producers like to call...

In the first ten days of his administration, Joe Biden signed a Guinness-record number of 25 executive orders. A billboard on the side of the road on California’s Central Coast led him on a detour three years ago from his career as a singer-songwriter and recording engineer. He created a podcast about the 1996 disappearance of college freshman Kristin Smart and it’s taken over his life. “I can’t step away from it for more than a few days,” Lambert said. “I just get sucked right back in because I want to be resolving things.” It was an unlikely turn for someone who refers to himself as a shy, “random boy with a beard” and it has produced results he never imagined.
