Tennessee is ranked fourth in the nation for COVID deaths per 100,000 people, WUOT reports, citing the White House Coronavirus Task Force’s red zone report, which calls for Gov. Bill Lee to implement a statewide mask mandate. The controversial report is from earlier this month. The task force issues frequent red zone reports. Governor Bill Lee has not responded to The Center for Public Integrity’s requests for the reports, WUOT said. However, one must ask, is this call for a mandate coming from the highest levels of the administration or from bureaucrats? One prominent task force member has been a vocal cheerleader for masks. Tuesday on Fox News Channel’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” host Tucker Carlson opened his program questioning the of masks and the reactions from some to those that question the science justifying masks as a means to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: If someone had asked you a year ago what you thought of people who wear masks after Halloween, the chances are your reaction would have been negative. Masks? What kind of person covers his face in public? Let’s see. Armed robbers do that. So do Klansmen and radical wahhabists. The rest of us don’t do that. In fact, until recently, wearing a mask in public was illegal in many places. The assumption was if you’re hiding who you are, you’re up to something bad. It made people nervous. By our nature, we want to see each other. We need to see each other. Looking at another person’s face is the beginning...

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt hasn’t been willing to order masks statewide in his conservative stronghold no matter who’s come calling.  He hasn’t been willing to take further steps requiring face coverings as a public health measure even as local mayors have hoped to see more action from the governor. When the head of a House subcommittee charged with monitoring COVID response scolded him for his approach, he didn’t budge. Even after some Republican governors relented and ordered facial coverings as the coronavirus ravaged their states, Stitt hasn’t moved.   Not even reports from the White House Coronavirus Task Force that have recommended in recent weeks that the state implement a mask requirement has changed his mind.  “I'm not going to mandate something statewide," Stitt said during a press conference Tuesday, saying the decision should be left to the local level. “Every community is different.”  That lack of follow-through from the governor has disappointed some elected officials in the state as they try to contain the coronavirus through a patchwork of local mask requirements. (CNN)President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have consistently punted authority over coronavirus management to state and local officials. And amid the most recent spike in cases across the country, we're seeing more and more of these officials fill the gap, calling for the one specific move we haven't yet heard from Trump or Pence: Mandatory mask-wearing. So far, 16 states plus Washington, DC have mask requirements in place for public settings, primarily in the northeast and southwest. THE POINT -- NOW ON YOUTUBE! In each episode of his weekly YouTube show, Chris Cillizza will delve a little deeper into the surreal world of politics. Click to subscribe! New to the list of locations with a mask requirement: Jacksonville, Florida. That also happens to be where President Trump plans to accept his party's presidential nomination -- instead of Charlotte, North Carolina, where state officials wouldn't bend to Trump's mask and social distancing-free convention in August.Jacksonville rolled out a mandatory mask order "for public & indoor locations, and in other situations where individuals cannot socially distance," effective at...
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A Texas man turned himself in to sheriff’s deputies after he allegedly slapped another customer in a dispute over face masks in a Lowe’s store. The other customer happened to be the judge who imposed the county’s mask requirement. Terry Toller, 47, was cited Thursday for disorderly conduct. He had been taken into custody on suspicion of assault on a public servant — a felony — but the judge he was accused of hitting asked that the charge be dropped. Toller’s lawyer, Nico LaHood, said the account of the confrontation “was extremely overblown.” The incident occurred Wednesday at the checkout line of a Lowe’s Home Improvement in San Antonio. The Bexar County sheriff’s office said County Judge Nelson Wolff, who was shopping there, tried to intervene when Toller berated a cashier who had told him he needed to wear a facemask. Toller allegedly hit the judge’s hand during the exchange. It was Wolff himself, in his capacity as the county’s top executive, who a week earlier had ordered businesses to require face coverings for employees and...
(CNN)America was born in rebellion and it's a spirit that still runs deep in its character. The perennial American struggle between government and the veneration of individual liberty is boiling to a head again: Some citizens are balking at expert guidance for them to cover their faces, in order to check the spread of the coronavirus. If you live in a country where the balance between personal rights and collective well-being falls differently, you might consider the refusal to wear a mask to be pure selfishness. But while plenty of Americans are wearing masks, rebellion is part of the country's political DNA. Ashley Smith from North Carolina, for example, recently burned a mask in a frying pan in a Facebook video, and told CNN sister channel HLN that mandatory mask use infringes "our freedoms." In Arizona, where the coronavirus infection rate is spiking, Charles Gbekia said he wouldn't wear a mask even though he's lost family to the virus. In California, where masks have just been made mandatory, a top health official said Monday that she had received death threats over the...
Gov. Cuomo scolded cops who aren’t wearing face masks to stop the spread of the coronavirus. “It is the law. And the law is the law for the police, right?” Cuomo told reporters Saturday. “So wear a mask. It is the state law. It’s not an option.” The NYPD gave a litany of reasons Thursday for why officers weren’t wearing the required masks. Two cited were the heat and their long hours. Cuomo also took some protesters to task for how they’re wearing their masks. He donned one out to show the right and wrong ways. The right way is to cover both the nose and mouth. The wrong way is to pull it below the chin. “This is like a form of a chin guard,” the governor said with his mask down low. “It may be a fashion statement. It may be cool. But this accomplishes nothing. It’s not a mask. It’s nothing.” Cuomo said hospitalizations from the coronavirus Friday were at the lowest level since March 20 and that deaths on Friday were at 32, also the lowest...
(CNN)The World Health Organization is now calling for nations to encourage the general public to wear fabric masks in areas where there continues to be intense spread of the novel coronavirus -- and for all health workers and caregivers to wear medical masks throughout their shift while in clinical areas. These updated recommendations, announced on Friday, are a shift from what WHO previously advised on masks, which was to not wear them if you are not sick or not caring for someone who is sick, in an effort to keep masks available for health workers.Social distancing and masks reduce risk of getting Covid-19, review finds"In areas with widespread transmission, WHO advises medical masks for all people working in clinical areas of a health facility, not only workers dealing with patients with Covid-19," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a media briefing in Geneva on Friday."Second, in areas with community transmission, we advise that people aged 60 years or over, or those with underlying conditions, should wear a medical mask in situations where physical distancing is not possible," Tedros said, and...
