The Chicago White Sox needed a sweep to have a realistic chance at surpassing the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. Instead, they were swept. And now a team that had World Series aspirations is on the verge of missing the postseason. The Sox entered Friday’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers trailing the Guardians by seven games — eight considering the Guardians own the tiebreaker — with 12 remaining after losing three straight at Guaranteed Rate Field. Tuesday had a playofflike buzz, with the Guardians winning 10-7 in 11 innings. That victory secured the important tiebreaker edge for the Guardians. The Sox never recovered, falling 8-2 in an uninspiring performance Wednesday and seeing a late rally come up short Thursday in a 4-2 loss. The players looked at the larger picture. “We’ve had our spurts of playing really good baseball, but it just wasn’t consistent enough,” right fielder Gavin Sheets said after Thursday’s loss. “It doesn’t come down to these three games for sure. I think we all would agree that we should have played better baseball, and...
Michael Fawcett has lost weight and gained a few grey hairs since quitting royal service, and the double-breasted suits, Turnbull & Asser shirts and silk 'pochette' squares that were once his sartorial trademark are now confined to their wardrobe. While his old boss, King Charles, travelled to Birkhall to mourn and reflect on his sudden elevation to the throne, the monarch's former aide and sometime toothpaste-squeezer was pounding the suburban pavements near his home in South-West London. Wearing tracksuit bottoms, a T-shirt and scuffed white trainers, the unemployed 59-year-old seemed alone with his thoughts as he walked his labradoodle in the streets around the red-brick home he shares with wife Debbie shortly after 9am on Thursday. Time was when his principal form of exercise involved striding across deep-pile carpets in tasselled loafers, attending to great affairs of state. Now his daily tasks include posting letters, buying milk, and picking up dog mess in a black plastic bag. It wasn't supposed to be like this. For much of his professional life, which spanned almost four decades, Fawcett was being groomed for...
For a woman who prided herself on ensuring the Queen always looked her regal best, Angela Kelly was curiously disorganised in her own life. A visitor to her grace-and-favour house in Windsor Great Park was taken aback when she offered to make a cup of tea. ‘She put a tea bag in a mug of cold water and put it in the microwave,’ the guest recalled yesterday. ‘I bet that never happened to the Queen.’ There were domestic dramas at home, too. On one occasion Miss Kelly rang a royal aide to complain about an infestation of rats. A flunkey was despatched to investigate and found that the rodents were nesting in plastic bin liners full of clothes — among them royal garments — which were dumped all over the house. When these stories reached the Queen’s ears they were often received with wry and benevolent amusement. As dresser, personal assistant and confidante, the Liverpool docker’s daughter occupied an intriguing role in the late Queen’s life. It gave her considerable influence over other more senior staff and a position of...
A fan yelled, “Urgency,” after Amed Rosario beat Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada’s throw to first in the first inning Wednesday. The Cleveland Guardians had it on display. The Sox did not play up to that level and find themselves in a dire situation after an 8-2 loss in front of 22,606 at Guaranteed Rate Field. It was a tough evening defensively for Moncada, who was charged with an error during the Guardians’ two-run first. And it was an uninspiring performance all around for the Sox, who fell to six games behind the Guardians in the American League Central with 13 games remaining. Cleveland’s magic number to clinch the division is seven. The Sox have lost the first two of a critical three-game series. Tuesday’s game was a hard-fought 10-7 defeat in 11 innings. Wednesday’s didn’t feature that same intensity early. The Sox nearly got out of a bases-loaded situation in the first when Oscar Gonzalez hit a grounder to third. Moncada stepped on the bag but didn’t make a clean throw to first while trying to complete...
A female orca named Kohana died at the Loro Parque marine park in Tenerife, Spain, making her the third killer whale to die at that park in the last 18 months. Kohana was the daughter of Tilikum, who was the subject of the groundbreaking documentary exposing SeaWorld called Blackfish. Kohana was just 20 years old. Source: Joeltwister/YouTube In March 2021, a 17-year-old orca named Skyla died, followed by a three-year-old orca named Ula, who died in August 2021. Kohana dying at the age of 20, along with these other killer whales, is heartbreaking as killer whales can live for up to 80 years in the wild. Kohana was born in captivity in San Diego at SeaWorld. She was sent to Tenerife on a breeding loan when she was just three years old. Kohana was sent with her sister, brother, uncle, and other close relatives that she would not naturally breed with in the wild. Kohana gave birth at just eight years old and became the youngest orca to have ever given birth in captivity. Even more heartbreaking, the...

The long-awaited iPhone 14 Pro finally went on sale on Friday, with fans around the world eagerly queuing outside Apple Stores to be among the first to get their hands on the new device. But some early adopters are already reporting a bizarre problem - the rear camera's main lens physically shakes and rattles when they are taking photos or videos in some third-party apps including Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram. It is unclear how widespread the problem is or what the underlying cause is. However, several concerned iPhone 14 Pro users have taken to Reddit and Twitter to describe their experiences and share videos demonstrating the issue. The problem does not appear to affect the iPhone's built-in Camera app. A handful of videos showing the problem have been shared to social media, including this one from TikTok user Damian Munoz. The videos show the user opening up the camera function within a third-party app on the iPhone 14 Pro and seeing a blurry image on the display, as the main lens on the device vibrates uncontrollably and makes a rattling noise...
GENNADY GOLOVKIN'S coach has "notified the Las Vegas Police Department’s robbery division" to "prevent a third theft by the judges". The tongue-in-cheek remark, made by Johnathon Banks, comes ahead of GGG's trilogy bout with Canelo Alvarez over the weekend. 2Kazakhstan’s Gennady Golovkin gestures to fans after a super middleweight boxing match against Canada’s Steve Rolls on Saturday, June 8, 2019, in New York. In April, the Ravens made a shocking move on the first night of the NFL draft when they traded receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown to the Arizona Cardinals. And instead of drafting another wideout, the Ravens selected two tight ends — Charlie Kolar and Isaiah Likely — in the fourth round, indicating that Baltimore would run a tight end-heavy offense in 2022. In the Ravens’ 24-9 season-opening win over the New York Jets on Sunday, it didn’t take long for the wide receivers to show they’re more than capable of delivering for star quarterback Lamar Jackson. Devin Duvernay had a career afternoon, catching four passes for a career-high 54 yards and two touchdowns, while second-year wideout Rashod Bateman corralled a 55-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter that might have been thrown to Brown a year ago. In the months leading up to Baltimore’s dominant victory at MetLife Stadium, the Ravens expressed confidence in their wide receivers. They didn’t make a splashy move in the trade market or free agency except for signing veteran Demarcus Robinson, who was surprisingly cut by...
BEN STOKES was delighted after cricket chiefs decided the Third Test against South Africa WILL resume at The Oval on Saturday. There will be three days’ play after day one on Thursday was washed out and Friday’s play cancelled as a mark of respect to the Queen. 1Stokes will lead England out for the Third Test on SaturdayCredit: Getty The ECB wanted to extend the match into Tuesday but South Africa are set to fly home that day and refused to budge. The national anthem will be sung as usual before the start of play and, with a sell-out crowd of 27,500 expected, it could be the first massed rendition of God Save the King. God Save the Queen was about to be sung on Thursday when rain arrived. Captain Stokes made his views clear when responding to a tweet asking whether sporting events should go ahead this weekend. Even by working full-time year-round jobs, more than a third of families do not earn enough to cover rent, groceries and other basic expenses needed to keep a household running, according to a new study. Some 35 percent of working families cannot meet their weekly outgoings for housing, food, medical care, transport, child care and other expenses, says the Brandeis University study based on 98,000 households.  Even though gas prices have fallen to $3.78 per gallon and inflation dipped to 8.5 percent in July, the economy and rising prices remain a top concern for millions of cash-strapped voters heading in to November’s midterms. 'Full-time work alone isn’t enough to cover the everyday essentials most families need to support themselves, which creates significant financial hurdles to support children,' said Pamela Joshi, lead author of the 29-page study. The situation is worse for Hispanic and black families, adds the report. More than half cannot afford basic needs, compared to a quarter of white families and 23 percent of Asian and Pacific Islander families. Jesus Montiel, Krista Mason and their daughter Diana, 2,...

Chicago Cubs staff assistant Jonathan Mota plopped his cap on the infield AstroTurf at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. He positioned it roughly seven feet in front of first base to serve as a visual for the pregame drill before returning to home plate, where bench coach Andy Green used a fungo bat to rip baseballs down the third-base line. Each time, Christopher Morel focused on his footwork to lead him into backhanding the baseball and firing it to first. The ball wasn’t supposed to be a direct throw, however. With Morel’s momentum taking him toward the foul line, Green and Mota wanted him to one-hop his throw to first, where teammate Franmil Reyes was standing to field the ball. The one-hop approach creates a more controlled movement and better sets up a first baseman to handle the long, potentially off-balance throw. The technique is part of the process to help Morel develop more consistency at third base, most notably on his throws. Morel is a visual learner, so the Cubs have used the cap as a reference point as...
All good things must come to an end, and for Serena Williams the end - or what seems like the end - of one of the greatest athletic careers in history came calling in Flushing Meadows on Friday night. The 40-year-old Williams bowed out in the third-round of the US Open, losing to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic 5-7, 7-6, 1-6. As she stood on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium for what may be the final time, social media became a memorial book of sorts on a career that inspired so many from all walks of life. From legends like Tiger Woods and Derek Jeter, to tennis players such as Ons Jabeur and Carlos Alcaraz to NBA and WNBA stars like Breanna Stewart, JR Smith, Isaiah Thomas, and Diamond DeShields, to retired women's athletes of years gone, Serena Williams drew the admiration and attention of all those who love sports. 'You're literally the greatest on and off the court,' Serena's friend Tiger Woods wrote. 'Thank you for inspiring all of us to pursue our dreams. I love you little sis!!!!!!' NFL superstar...
US stocks closed out the trading week on a down note on Friday, marking Wall Street's third consecutive negative week as roughly half the gains from the summer's market rally dissipate.  At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 337.98 points, or 1.1 percent, to 31,318.44 after losing 3 percent for the week. The S&P 500 dropped 1.1 percent on the day and 3.3 percent for the week, while the Nasdaq Composite finished its sixth consecutive session in the red, losing 1.3 percent for the day and 4.2 percent for the week.  Wall Street had opened sharply higher after the August jobs report showed relatively strong hiring, but the gains were quickly erased following new developments in the European natural gas crisis. Inflation in the United States currently sits at a 40 year high, and consumers are experiencing jitters as the Fed prepares to jack-up interest rates.   At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 337.98 points, or 1.1% Europe's energy crisis loomed larger after Russian energy giant Gazprom said it couldn't resume the...
Serena Williams is not done just yet, and as the stakes are getting higher in the US Open, so too are the prices to watch her play. Williams advanced to the third round on Wednesday by beating No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, and the ticket market is exploding as she continues her farewell tour. According to data from TickPick, the 'get-in' price for Williams' third round match Friday vs. Ajla Tomljanovic is $565, with the average ticket now costing $605.  Serena Williams held her nerve in the final set Wednesday to defeat Estonia's Anett Kontaveit That second figure is a staggering 221% more expensive than what the average third round ticket was going for - $188 - before she had advanced. The Open is expected to be Williams' last tournament of her career, and it wasn't even clear if she'd make her way to the hard court after spending a year out of the sport. But it was confirmed in July the six-time tournament champ would take her last crack at winning in New York, and ticket prices...
Nick Kyrgios has advanced to the third round of the US Open in trademark style - complaining to the chair umpire of marijuana smoke, being warned for spitting on the court and letting fly with a continual series of expletives at his own support box. Kyrgios won the first two sets against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi before he began to unravel, losing the third set.  He then steadied to wrap it up 7-6 (3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, despite continuing to hurl barbs at his own support box.  Kyrgios somehow found new grounds for complaint as he told the chair umpire during the third set that he was being affected by marijuana smoke in the air; which commentators said 'they'd never heard of before'. French player Benoit Paire has tanked his US Open match against Brit Cameron Norrie so brazenly that he had his bag packed before the match had even finished. Norrie breezed to a 6-0, 7-6, 6-0 victory on a sweltering court where his opponent Paire hardly seemed to try, with the first set lasting only 18 minutes and the third only going one minute longer.  Benoit Paire sits on the court during his match against Cameron Norrie at the US Open, where he put in the bare minimum of effort for two out of the three sets Cam Norrie reached the second round of the US Open after beating Paire 6-0, 7-6, 6-0 and suggested his opponent's lack of effort might have been related to the hot weather Paire was so dispirited at 0-5 down in the third, he packed his equipment bag - despite having one more game still to play. The Frenchman, who has a history of tanking matches and was warned for not trying at Wimbledon in 2021, will receive $80,000 (AU$117,000) for his 98-minute appearance. However, the...
Three potential hurricanes could hit the United States in September after only the third hurricane-free August in 60 years. The nearest storm as of Monday was described by the National Hurricane Center as being in the Central Tropical Atlantic, and they estimate the chance of it becoming a hurricane within five days at 80 percent. Two more follow: one 600 miles east of Bermuda as of 2pm EDT on Monday, given a 10 percent chance of becoming a hurricane, and the third off the west coast of Africa, given a 30 percent chance of strengthening to a hurricane in the next five days. A fourth storm is being monitored, heading towards Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, but is not expected to hit the U.S.  The last named storm to hit the U.S. was Tropical Storm Colin, which landed in the Carolinas on July 2. The question of whether the Giants can still make the playoffs is taking a back seat to the possibility they won’t finish the 2022 season with a winning record. The Minnesota Twins came in having lost six straight games and were in the same precarious position regarding the postseason as the Giants. The Twins, however, broke out in a big way with a six-run inning against Alex Wood in the third inning en route to a 9-0 home win over the Giants. The Giants, at 61-63, have 38 games remaining with 23 coming against teams still in contention for playoff spots. The Twins, one of those teams, improved to 63-61. It was the Giants’ first game in Minnesota in 17 years and first-ever game at 13-year-old Target Field. Carlos Correa hit a two-run home run for the Twins against Wood in the first inning, his 14th of the season, with Gary Sanchez adding a two-run shot in the six-run third. Kyle Garlick hit a solo home run against Austin Wynns, a catcher who pitched the eighth inning. Wood (8-11) gave...

Fox News host Tucker Carlson compared Chief Medical Advisor to the President Anthony Fauci to the late Cuban dictator “Fidel Castro and mental patients.” During Monday’s Tucker Carlson Tonight, the host played soundbites of Fauci, who announced earlier in the day he’s retiring from government in December, blasting those who disagreed with him on Covid policy. “So if they get up and criticize science, nobody’s gonna know what they’re talking about. But if they get up and really aim their bullets at Tony Fauci, well, people can recognize there’s a person there, so it’s easy to criticize,” said Fauci in a CBS News interview in November 2021. “But they’re really criticizing science because I represent science.” “So if you are trying to, you know, get at me as a public health official and a scientist, you’re really attacking not only Dr. Anthony Fauci, you are attacking science,” he said in a June 2021 hit on MSNBC. “I’m the bad guy to an entire subset of people because I represent something that is uncomfortable for them,” said Fauci in a National...
Americans watched more streaming shows on services like Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video than cable TV for the first time ever in July, new viewing figures show. The record marks the first time that streaming has overtaken cable in US viewing habits, capturing over a third of American eyeballs.  Streaming services attracted 34.8 per cent of total US television viewing, while cable managed 34.4 per cent, according to a release by ratings company Nielsen. The breakthrough comes as streaming hits four consecutive months of new viewership highs, thanks to top-line entertainment such as Netflix's Stranger Things and The Umbrella Academy, Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, and Prime Video's The Boys. Streaming viewership was up 23 per cent from a year go while cable was down nine per cent as fewer people paid for cable television. Three inmates have been indicted in connection with the prison murder of infamous Boston Irish mob boss James 'Whitey' Bulger. The US Department of Justice has charged Fotios Geas, 55, Paul J. DeCologero, 48, and Sean McKinnon, 36, for conspiracy to commit first degree murder of Bulgar, 89, in a West Virginia prison in 2018.  Geas, known as 'Freddy,' and DeCologero, known as 'Pauly,' are accused of striking Bulger in the head multiple times, eventually leading to his death in October 2018 while incarcerated at the US Penitentiary Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. The two men have also been charged with aiding and abetting first degree murder and assault resulting in serious bodily injury, with Geas facing an additional charge for murder by a federal inmate serving a life sentence.  McKinnon has also been accused of making false statements to a federal agent.  Fotios Geas (right) and Paul DeCologero (left) are accused of striking James Bulger in the head multiple times, eventually leading to his death in October 2018 while incarcerated at the US Penitentiary Hazelton in Bruceton Mills,...
The death of a Nebraska child has been linked to the brain eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri that kills nearly every single person it infects.  The unnamed child is believed to have caught the infection while swimming in Elkhorn River, which crosses through the Omaha, Nebraska, area. Officials revealed that he died in Douglas County, which includes the state's largest city. If confirmed, this would be the Cornhusker's state first recorded case of brain eating amoeba infection. Brain eating amoeba infections are rare but incredibly deadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 154 cases from 1962 to 2021, with another three so far this summer. Only four Americans have ever survived the infection. Experts warn that the beings are most active during summer months when the temperature begins to warm. They are found in lakes and rivers around America, though they can also be hiding in swimming pools and splash parks that do not have proper sanitation practices.  'Millions of recreational water exposures occur each year, while only 0 to 8 Naegleria fowleri infections are identified each year,'...
AJ Pollock hit a chopper to third with two outs in the eighth inning Monday against the Houston Astros. Alex Bregman charged but couldn’t come up with the ball, and Pollock reached on an infield hit. It was the beginning of a big rally for the Chicago White Sox. Pollock advanced to third on Andrew Vaughn’s double to right and scored on Eloy Jiménez’s game-tying two-run double to left. The Sox pulled ahead later in the inning on Yoán Moncada’s two-run single to center. Pollock had two hits in the 4-2 win. It was his third straight two-hit game as he fills in at the top of the order for injured shortstop Tim Anderson. Pollock had three hits, an RBI and a run Aug. 7 against the Texas Rangers in his first game in the leadoff spot with Anderson out, first with a two-game suspension and then the hand injury. And Pollock has continued to hit. He led off Saturday with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly, and he added a solo home run in the eighth in...

Earlier this week, Mets’ Hall of Famer and current team broadcaster Keith Hernandez made some hay when he said he “hates doing Phillies games” because of what he considered to be Philadelphia’s bad brand of baseball. On Friday night, as Hernandez was off in St. Louis celebrating the 40th anniversary of his championship with the Cardinals, the Mets and Phillies turned in a game straight out of Hernandez’s era. The 2-1 win for the Phillies was all about pitching, defense, small ball, and ironically, the battle of fundamentals. Tied at one after the first two frames, both teams fired blanks until the tenth, when Hernandez’s dreaded “bad fundies” reared their ugly head, but this time for the Mets. One inning after getting nailed at home by Phillies’ left fielder Matt Vierling, Starling Marte had his throw to the plate skip right on by catcher Tomas Nido, allowing the Phils’ to take the lead on a sacrifice fly in the 10th. The Phillies got a run off Max Scherzer in the first inning and then fell dormant for the next six,...

AJ Pollock hit a long fly down the left-field line. For a moment, it looked as if the Chicago White Sox were going to take the lead in the eighth inning of Game 1 of a split doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians. But the ball kept hooking and landed foul. Just the way things have gone for the Sox for parts of this season. The Sox did not score in the eighth and the game remained tied. The Guardians broke through with three in the ninth against closer Liam Hendriks and won 7-4 in front of 18,518 at Guaranteed Rate Field. “Tough loss,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said. “Not a whole lot of analyzing there.” Pollock got the late hit in Game 2, leading the Sox to a 5-4 win for a split. Americans flocked to buy Mega Millions tickets ahead of Friday night's drawing, which was the third largest jackpot in the game's history at $660million.  No one has won the coveted reward in the last 27 consecutive drawings and those hoping to win Friday's big payout had to beat the unlikely odds of being 1 in 302million, according to Fox 6 Milwaukee.  If a lucky player wins Friday night and chooses the cash option, they would take home around $388million.  Either tonight or in the future, Michigan state lottery player relations manager Jake Harris recommends jackpot winners to 'take your time' collecting the prize and potentially contacting a lawyer or financial advisor and make sure 'your ducks in a row,' he told WGNTV.  He also recommends entering into a work or family pool for future drawings, 'because you don’t want to be the one left working in your group if it does happen to win and you didn’t pay for your ticket that week.'   Friday night's drawing was the ninth biggest jackpot overall.  The Mega Millions jackpot hit $660million before Friday's...

Cereals alone have risen in price by a jaw-dropping 15.1 per cent. Australia's Cameron Smith produced a stunning final round to capture the 150th Open Championship and inflict more major misery on a shell-shocked Rory McIlroy. McIlroy held a two-shot lead midway through the final round at St Andrews and carded a bogey-free closing 70, but that was not enough to end his eight-year drought in the game's biggest tournaments. Smith, who held the halfway lead before falling four off the pace with a third-round 73, fired eight birdies - including five in a row from the 10th - to card his second 64 of the week and finish 20 under par, beating the previous best of 19 under on the Old Course set by Tiger Woods in 2000. Australian Cameron Smith (pictured) is crowned champion of the 150th Open at St Andrews American Cameron Young made a brilliant eagle on the 18th in his closing 65 to force Smith to hole from two feet for his final birdie, leaving McIlroy needing his own eagle to force a four-hole play-off.  However, the 33-year-old was unable to produce a moment of magic and...
